A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

Last week, we began to talk about healing as a part of our parish’s mission, and as a follow up, I want to include a piece about what we mean by healing. We will start to talk more about this as a parish as we offer opportunities here to experience healing through many means, including the sacraments. Dr. Christine Williams, who is an area psychologist and the coordinator of the Healing Ministry at our parish, includes this piece on her website, addressing the question of “Does God Heal Today?”

Does God heal today? There are two answers to this. The first is to examine what it means to be healed, from the perspective of faith in Jesus Christ. Faith, in the Christian perspective, is more than adhering to a belief system. To be Christian is to have a relationship with the living God who sees us and who knows us intimately. Through this relationship and in growing spiritually, we begin to see ourselves as God sees us. And that is as a person worthy of love based on our inherent dignity. We learn to reject the things which have wounded us over the years: negative beliefs about ourselves, behaviors which interfere with our lives, relationships which are abusive, and more. We also develop strength through Christ to weather the turmoil, illness, and injury which are part of the human experience. In Christ we are healed. The second part of the answer is more bold — answering whether God CURES illness when we pray. There are cases which have been submitted for scientific investigation, where it is presumed that there is a natural explanation for the remission of illness which has occurred. Yet in some cases no explanation is found. In the absence of a natural cause for the cure, we are invited to believe that what the Gospel witnesses to is true: that God has and continues to sometimes cure ailments. This is unusual. It is not what we usually see working in a Christian-based healing ministry. But we hold space that this can happen.

The first part of this explanation is where I believe we, as a parish with an active healing ministry, have begun to see evidence of real healing. In truth, we have also begun to see, from time to time, physical cures, but they are not as dramatic and as frequent as the first type of healing. We are a people that needs to overcome many challenges in our personal lives, our relationships, our relationship with God through Jesus, and our relationship with the Church. I think that this is the secret to our success. We submit ourselves to God in faith, and having received healing or a cure, we become people who can then evangelize others. In the Gospel of John, Jesus speaks to a number of wounded people, but my favorite is the woman at the well. He points out to her that she is wounded in her relationships, and as a result, she cannot see Jesus for who He is. Once she realizes who He is, she becomes an evangelizer who draws the whole village to Jesus. They then believe for themselves. As I said last week, all of us have a bit of pride and “leprosy,” that is, something that needs to be healed in each of us. Then we can begin to share Jesus with other, like the woman at the well and the leper who went on to live a life of giving thanks to God and drawing others to Him. Peace, Father Murray Next week, we welcome a priest from the Unbound community who will be asking us for help with their projects around the world. In other news, soon we will be starting some work on the foyer at St. James. I will let you know about it as it unfolds.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION

If your child is in grade 2 or above and has already been baptized, and you seek the Sacrament of Eucharist for him/her, watch this space for details coming soon.

Preparation for this Sacrament includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (first Confession) in the fall, and continues with preparation for Eucharist in the spring. We use a combination of 5-6 gatherings of children and their parents/guardians and an at-home curriculum. Email Margo at [email protected] to make an appointment to register your child. First Communion is April 26, 2020, at our 9:30 AM Mass.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD — HELP NEEDED Wondrous Stories, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word, is offered as ongoing faith formation (in the place of CCD) for children up to 6th grade. During the Mass, kids gather in the parish hall (while their parents enjoy the readings and homilies at Mass) to learn about the Gospel and our Church. Kids love it, parents love it! Starting in November, we will offer this ministry during our 9:30 AM Sunday Masses at Immaculate Conception, and we are in need of a team of volunteer leaders for this school year. We’re looking for adults with a love for children and an interest in teaching young kids about Jesus in a safe and fun environment. We’ll train you, and supply all the materials. Interested? Please reach out to Margo Morin, our Pastoral Associate, at [email protected]

THIS WEEK AT ALPHA This week at alpha we dined on home-cooked teriyaki chicken, fried rice, and ginger broccoli, and asked the question: How and Why Do I Pray?
