Requesting Our Prayers Leavenworth Shelter of HopeThe Leavenworth Shelter of Hope is in need of Volunteers. The Shelter exists because the least of us are hungry and need food, are strangers and need welcoming. The Night Shelter began its ministry when a coalition of 35 churches met in September of 2014 to address the needs of area residents. The Shelter is open from 8:00 PM-8:00 AM. Over those 12 night hours, volunteers staff one of four 3-hour shifts (#1 = 8 PM-11 PM; # 2 =11 PM-2 AM; # 3 = 2 AM-5 AM; # 4 = 5 AM-8 AM). Volunteers work in pairs to cover each shift and ensure that our guests have ‘a safe place to sleep.’ If you are interested or need more information please contact Margaret Del Debbio, Director, Shelter of Hope (311 Kiowa) margaretdeldeb-bio@ gmail.com or call or text her at 913-704-8053. May God Bless you as you consider this important ministry to those in need.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

James and John were two of Jesus’ best friends. They, along with Peter, were the three who went with Jesus up the mountain and witnessed the Transfiguration. James and John, who were brothers, could also be the patron saints of people with bad timing. Or people who are missing the point.

Jesus has just come down from the mountain of the Transfiguration, where he was shown shining in glory, speaking with Moses and Elijah. These apostles also heard the very voice of God the Father, “This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased.” But now Jesus has come down from the mountain and is marching toward Jerusalem. The Gospels make it very clear that he knows what is going to happen in Jerusalem. He is going to be arrested, tortured, and crucified. He knows all that, but still he is going to Jerusalem. The normal reaction to such a threatening situation would be to turn and walk away, or maybe even run away. But not Jesus, and not now.

THAT is the moment that James and John approach Jesus and ask him if they can share his glory by sitting at his right and his left when he is victorious. Sigh… another moment when Jesus might well have slapped his own forehead, if they did that gesture back then. WHAT were those two guys THINKing? (That is, of course, a rhetorical question. It makes a point instead of asking for information.)

I sometimes find it useful to change the tone of rhetorical questions, and turn them into real questions. Try it with that one. Instead of “WHAT were those two guys THINKing?!!?”, hear it instead in your head as “what WERE those two guys thinking?”

And the answer is, they were thinking of glory, power, privilege, position, and fame. What they were NOT thinking of, is what Jesus knew was the path he had to walk. St. John Chrysostom said about this passage: “Their timing was precisely wrong, for this was not the right time for crowns or prizes. It was the time for struggles, contests, toils, sweat, wrestling-rings, and battles.”

Think about the path you have had to walk, and remember the struggles, the toils, the wrestling-rings, and the battles. When I was ordained a priest, I was not thinking that a year would come when I would have 60 funerals for people I’d never met. I was not picturing sitting on a rooftop trying to convince a despondent teenager not to jump, and feeling panic because I didn’t have the right words to “fix things”.

When couples get married, they imagine that their kids will be just like themselves, but what happens when their children turn out to be very different from those parents? Can they still walk to Jerusalem? Can they even see it from that framework? Let us take solace from the patron saints of bad timing, and take courage from the one who walked towards Jerusalem.

May God bless you all. --Fr. Glenn

COVID Mass Reminder, we have a COVID Mass for those who feel the need for that extra comfort and protection during the continued Corona Virus period. Our 5:30 PM Mass on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church requires the six foot distancing and wearing a mask. A mask must be worn by parishioners at all times during the Mass. Our lectors, cantor, priest and deacon may remove their masks when speaking or singing. Please keep these COVID protection procedures when attending our 5:30 PM Mass. Our 4:00 PM Mass at St. Joseph Church is also live streamed. Please go to our parish website at www.icsj.org for directions to link to this Mass.

Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
