Foreword The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is utterly grateful for the initiatives set forth by His Majesty

the King in constructing an additional bridge across the Chao Phraya River to alleviate the problem of traffic

congestion in Bangkok. The bridge, royally bestowed with the name “Rama VIII Bridge”, not only serves the

immediate purpose of easing road traffic, but also serves as an aesthetic landmark for commuters, bringing

about the construction of King Ananda Mahidol Royal Monument in great memory of His Majesty King

Ananda Mahidol, the eighth monarch of the revered Chakri Dynasty.

Reflecting on the benevolence of two of Thailand’s greatest kings in modern history as well as to record

important events and the vital role that these monarchs played in the lives of the Thai people, the Bangkok

Metropolitan Administration has compiled this book to commemorate the opening ceremony of King Ananda

Mahidol Royal Monument. The book not only serves as a special souvenir for the occasion but is also filled

with valuable information concerning the life and deeds of the late King, a result of painstaking research and

study that should provide its readers with a sense of immense pride and joy. One poignant element concerns the

extraordinary role played by the late Princess Mother who lovingly reared up the two future monarchs and

instilled in them the values that have endeared them in the hearts of the Thai people. Besides serving as an

account of royal history, the book presents information on the conventions of erecting statues dedicated to the

memory of past kings and details the process of their construction. The final portion of the book introduces a

new public park located in the area at the foot of the bridge, “Suan Luang Rama VIII Park”, designed and

landscaped in the form of a waterfront park. The park has become another recreational area in the Bangkok

Metropolis.

The Rama VIII Bridge, King Ananda Mahidol Royal Monument, and Suan Luang Rama VIII Park serve

as vital markers of the love and devotion of His Majesty the King towards his elder brother, abiding reminders

of the happiness and well-being his reign brought to the Thai people. Commuters on the Rama VIII Bridge will

joyfully recall the image of His Majesty the King committing himself to the noble task of alleviating road

traffic in the capital city. In the same way, whenever one travels along the river and passes King Ananda

Mahidol Royal Monument, one’s heart would be filled with a sense of appreciation for the love and concern

showered on the Thai people by the late sovereign. Finally, when one seeks umbrage under a pavilion taking in

the breeze from the Chao Phraya River, one is reminded of the compassion and greatness shown by the two

kings that have enabled their loyal Thai subjects to live a life filled with peace and happiness. For that we

cannot help but lift our hands in the traditional Thai “wai” manner and express the deepest reverence and

gratitude and wish His Majesty a long and prosperous reign.

สงขลานครนทร ซงเปนพระราชโอรสองคท ๖๙ ในจำนวน ๗๗ พระองคของพระบาทสมเดจพระจลจอมเกลาเจาอยหว (รชกาลท ๕)

His Majesty, the sixty-ninth son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and the seventh son of Queen Sri

King Ananda Mahidol was born in Heidelberg, Germany on September 20, 1925. The day was one of

the most momentous days for the Mahidol royal family as is evident in the message from the Queen

Grandmother to Prince Traidos Prabandha, dated September 21, 1925, conveying the following sentiments:

“...Mygrandsonwasborn thisSundaymorning.When Iawokeandsaw the telegram, I

immediatelyknewthatithadtobenewsofhisbirth.MyhandsweretremblingasIopenedthetelegram.I

wasoverjoyedtolearnthatitwasaboy.PleasesendatelegramtellingthemthatIamoverwhelmedwith

delightatthebirthofagrandsonandforthefactthathisbirthdayisthe20th...”

The main reason for the Queen’s great elation with the birth of this royal grandson on the 20th of

September was because that date coincided with the birthday of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). King

Vajiravudh (Rama VI) would subsequently bestow upon the young prince the name, “Ananda Mahidol”, at his

father’s request.

การทสมเดจพระพนวสสาอยยกาเจาทรงดพระราชหฤทยเปนพเศษกบการประสตในวนท ๒๐ ของพระนดดาองคน

เพราะเปนวนและเดอนเดยวกนกบวนพระบรมราชสมภพของพระบาทสมเดจพระจลจอมเกลาเจาอยหว รชกาลท ๕ พระบาทสมเดจ

พระชนกและพระชนนไปยงประเทศตางๆ ตงแตยงมพระชนมายเพยง ๑ เดอน ในชวงเวลานนนอกจากพระชนกและพระชนน

แลว พระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรยงทรงไดรบการถวายอภบาลดแลจากพระเชษฐภคน คอ สมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ

เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทร และเมอมพระชนมายได ๒ พรรษา ทรงไดเปนพระเชษฐาเนองจากพระ

ชนนใหประสตพระอนชา คอ พระบาทสมเดจพระเจาอยหวรชกาลปจจบน

ในชวงเวลาทพระโอรสและพระธดาทงสามพระองคกำลงเจรญพระชนม สมเดจพระเจาบรมวงศเธอ เจาฟามหดลอดลเดช

กรมหลวงสงขลานครนทรมพระภารกจมากมาย การถวายอภบาลเลยงดพระโอรสและพระธดาจงเปนหนาทของพระชนนเปนสวนใหญ

โดยเฉพาะอยางยง เมอสมเดจพระเจาบรมวงศเธอ เจาฟามหดลอดลเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครนทรเสดจทวงคตเมอวนท ๒๔

กนยายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๒ ทำใหพระชนนตองถวายการอภบาลพระโอรสและพระธดาแตเพยงลำพง ทรงอนญาตใหพระโอรสและ

พระธดาทรงเลนสนกสมวยไดตามสมควรและเปนธรรมดาทจะมการซกซนบางตามประสาเดก โดยเฉพาะอยางยง พระบาทสมเดจ

พระอฐมรามาธบดนทรขณะยงทรงพระเยาว ทรงมความซกซนเปนพเศษ ดงทสมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา

กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทรทรงพระนพนธไวในหนงสอ “เจานายเลกๆ - ยวกษตรย” ความวา

“...แมเลาวาในสมยนน พระองคอานนทฯ ซนมาก จงตองใหใสทรดตวมสายสองขางคลายๆ กบสายบงเหยน โดยมาก

เมออยในบานจะเอาสายไปผกไวกบขาโตะพระองคชายกยอมใหผกอยางดวนหนงแหนน(พระพเลยง)คงลมผกทานกถามขน

มาเองวา‘วนนทำไมไมผก’...”

King Ananda Mahidol led the life of a traveller,

moving with his parents from country to country from

when he was only one month old. At that time, apart

from his parents, the future king was cared for by his

elder sister, HH Princess Galyani Vadhana. When he

was two years old, he gained a new brother, HH Prince

Bhumibol Adulyadej (later His Majesty King Bhumibol

Adulyadej).

While the three young royal children were

growing up, HRH Prince Mahidol Adulyadej was kept

occupied with many obligations so most of the

upbringing of the royal children became the

responsibility of the Princess Mother. After the

premature death of HRH Prince Mahidol Adulyadej on

September 24, 1929, the Princess Mother was left with

the task of raising her children single-handedly.

Perceiving that i t was normal for them to be

mischievous from time to time, she allowed her children

the freedom to enjoy themselves in most activities

appropriate to their ages. King Ananda Mahidol was

especially energetic as is revealed by HRH Princess

Galyani Vadhana, in her book “Chao Nai Lek Lek -

Yuwakasat”, (From Little Princes to Young Kings).

“...MothertoldmethatPrinceAnandawassoenergeticatthetimethathehadtoweararestrainer

withtwocordssimilartoabridletoholdhim.Whenwewerehome,Motherwouldtietherestrainertothe

legofatableandthePrincewouldacquiesce.OnedayNaen(hisnanny)musthaveforgottentosecure

therestrainerandthePrinceasked,‘Why haven’t I been tied up today?’...”

ชวงเวลาภายหลงจากสมเดจพระเจาบรมวงศเธอ เจาฟามหดลอดลเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครนทรเสดจทวงคต ครอบครว

มหดลประทบอย ณ วงสระปทมระยะหนง พระชนนโปรดใหพระโอรสและพระธดาเขาเรยนชนอนบาลทโรงเรยนมาแตรเดอ

กอนทจะทรงยายพระโอรสไปเรยนทโรงเรยนเทพศรนทร และยายพระธดาไปเรยนทโรงเรยนราชน

เมอทรงศกษาอยทโรงเรยนเทพศรนทร พระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรมพระสหายมาก เวลาทเสดจไปถงโรงเรยน

จะมพระสหายรวมชนเรยนวงกรเกรยวกนเขามาหาพรอมกบเรยกวา “ทาน ทาน” ทรงศกษาอยทโรงเรยนเทพศรนทรไดเพยง

ปเดยวกตองเสดจไปประทบ ณ เมองโลซานน ประเทศสวตเซอรแลนด เพราะพระพลานามยไมแขงแรง

ขณะทประทบอย ณ ประเทศสวตเซอรแลนด พระชนนทรงดแลใหพระโอรสและพระธดาไดรบการศกษาเชนเดยวกบ

เดกทวไป ทรงอบรมบมนสยพระโอรสและพระธดาใหรจกใชชวตเชนบคคลธรรมดา กวดขนใหทกพระองครจกรบผดชอบขาวของ

เครองใชของแตละพระองคเอง อนญาตใหเลนไดภายในขอบเขตทจะไมเกดความเสยหายใดๆ ในขณะเดยวกนกไมไดหามเลน

ในสงทเดกๆ สนใจ ดงทสมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทรทรงพระนพนธไวใน

หนงสอ “แมเลาใหฟง” ตอนหนงวา

“...แมบอกวาเมอเดกๆ เคยชอบเลนนำเลนไฟ แมจงจดใหลกๆ มนำเลนโดยกอบอเลกใหและอนญาตใหกอกองไฟเลน

ดวยสปดาหละครงกจดParty(งาน)เดกๆโดยเชญเดกทงไทยและฝรงมาทวงและใหMrs.Suttonผมความชำนาญในการ

จดการละเลนมาชวยควบคมอยดวย...”

สมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทรไดทรงพระนพนธและเลาเรองการอบรม

เลยงด พระโอรสและพระธดาของสมเดจพระบรมราชชนนไววา

“...สอนใหเดกhonest คอพดความจรงเทานน... ถาจะพดไป ทกอยางมาจากทลหมอม(สมเดจพระบรมราชชนก)

ทลหมอมตงพระทยทจะทำอะไรใหประเทศดขน มความตงใจอยางเดยวเพอจะทำสงทดใหประเทศ เพราะฉะนนคอตองใหเปน

คนดแมไมใชคำมากคอตองเปนคนด...

“...ในครอบครวเรา(ความรบผดชอบ) เปนของทไมตองคด เปนธรรมชาต สงทสอนอนแรกคอเราจะทำอะไรใหเมองไทย

ถาไมมความรบผดชอบจะไปชวยเมองไทยไดอยางไร ทกอยางออกมาจากนน ถาจะเอาหลกการ ตองเปนคนด นคอหลกการ

เพอจะชวยอะไรได...”

After the death of HRH Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Mahidol family remained in Thailand with

Sa Pathum Palace as their residence. The Princess Mother enrolled her sons and daughter in the kindergarten at

Mater Dei School. The princes were subsequently moved to Debsirin School and the princess to Rajini School.

While attending Debsirin School, HH Prince Ananda Mahidol made many friends. When he arrived at

school, his classmates would rush out, calling out “Sir! Sir!”. However, due to his delicate health, after only

one year at this school, the young prince was relocated to Lausanne, Switzerland.

During their stay in Switzerland the Princess Mother arranged for her children to receive the same

education as local children. She took great care in training all her children to lead a simple life like that of any

commoner. They were brought up under strict discipline and were taught to take responsibility for their

personal belongings. As long as they did not come to any harm or cause any damage they were allowed to play

within certain limits and they were allowed to enjoy themselves in the ways that most children were fond of.

An excerpt from HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana’s book, “Mae Lao Hai Fang” (Mother Told Me), reads:

“...Mothersaidthatwhenwewereyoungwelovedtoplaywithwaterandfiresosheprovidedboth

forus.Shehadasmallpooldugandletusbuildabonfire.Sheheldachildren’spartyonceaweekand

invitedbothThaiandforeignchildrentothehouse.ShealsohadMrs.Sutton,whowasanexperton

The peace and tranquility this family enjoyed was profoundly disrupted when King Prajadhipok (Rama

VII) abdicated on March 2, 1934 without appointing an heir, making HH Prince Ananda Mahidol first in line to

the throne according to the Palace Laws B.E. 2467 (1924) regarding the succession. The Parliament approved

the decision on March 7, 1934 to invite the young prince to ascend the throne as the eighth monarch of the

House of Chakri under the name of “King Ananda Mahidol”. The King was only 9 years old at the time. He

was later exalted to the title of “Phra Bat Somdetch Phra Paramendra Maha Ananda Mahidol Sakol Baisal

Maha Rassada Dhibodi Phra Athama Rama Dhibodintra Sayamindra Dhiraj Borommanath Bopitra” in 1996.

Because His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol ascended the throne at a

very tender age and still needed to stay in Switzerland to complete his

education, it was necessary to appoint a regent. The young King continued

to remain under the care of his mother as before. For the Princess Mother,

the priority was to ensure that he acquired a formal education and training

in social skills. Her intention was evident in a letter that she wrote to the

Queen Grandmother on April 10, 1935 expressing her objections to a trip

to Thailand following an invitation from the government and its suggestion

that he should suspend his studies in Switzerland and receive his education

from private tutors while in Thailand. In the letter, the Princess Mother

writes:

The Queen Grandmother was extremely pleased with the Princess

Mother’s dedication to the royal children’s upbringing as is obvious

from a letter she wrote to the Princess Mother, dated April 3, 1935

saying:

“...Onceagain,mypraisesareduetoyou,Sangvalya.Youare

amazinglycleverandcomposedinyourintelligentdiscoursewith

ChaoPhrayaSriDharmaDhibes.Iamindeedblessedtohavesuch

awonderfuldaughter-in-lawlikeyou,asaremygrandchildrento

havesuchanexcellentmother,someonebeyondanyreproachor

disdain.Insayingthis,Iamsodelightedandatthesametime

overcomewithsadness,tearsbegintowellupinmyeyes...”

“...Studyingonhisownwillonlymakethechildloseinterestinlearningbecausetherewillbeno

competitionandnoclassmates.ItwillonlymakeNandafrustratedbyhavingtocarrytheburdenof

responsibilityofbeingkingandnothavinganytimetobeanordinarychild.ItisessentialthattheKing

Bringing up the royal children and imposing strict discipline was one of the most important

preoccupations of the Princess Mother. Her fervent desire was to see them learn how to conduct themselves in

a proper manner. Her strong determination paid off superbly since King Ananda Mahidol was always received

with warm affection and great admiration wherever he went. In a letter to HRH Prince Narisra Nuvadtiwongse,

HRH Prince Damrong Rajanubharb expressed how impressed he was by the conduct of the youthful monarch

at an audience he had with him in Penang during the King’s first trip home in 1938. He writes:

“...HisMajestyarrivedatCinnamonHallat10.00am.Ireceivedhimasheemergedfromthe

motorcarandinvitedhimintothereceptionroom.KromKhunJainadNarendraandotherhigh-ranking

governmentofficialssuchasPhrayaWichitwongseinvitedtheKingtobeseatedintheroomwhilethe

middle-rankingofficialswaitedonhiminthemiddleroom.AfterwardsIsummonedallmyfamily

memberswhowerewithmeatthattimetoanaudiencewiththeKing.Whentheyhadallassembledinthe

roomIinformedHisMajestythatIwasanold-fashionedmanleftoverfromtheoldtimesandIhumbly

soughthispermissiontoofferhimmyandmyfamily’sloyaltyaccordingtotradition.Wethenpresented

himwithanofferingofflowers,incensesticksandcandlesthatwehadprepared.AstheKingacceptedthe

หรอถาวาอกอยางหนง คอพระอปนสยดมาก มเคาของพระสตปญญาผดกบเดกสามญ และรจกวางพระองคพอเหมาะแกเปน

พระเจาแผนดนทยงทรงพระเยาวใครๆทไดเขาใกลแลวมแตชอบและสรรเสรญกนทกคนไมเลอกวาไทยหรอฝรง...”

ความตงพระราชหฤทยแนวแนของพระบรมราชชนน ทจะถวายอภบาลอบรมเลยงดพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทร

เพอใหทรงเปนพระมหากษตรยทสมบรณพรอม เหนไดจากพระราชหตถเลขาถงสมเดจพระพนวสสาอยยกาเจา วา

“...ตวของหมอมฉนเองทำประโยชนอะไรใหบานเมองไมไดมาก แตถาไดชวยลกๆ ใหไดรบความอบรมและเลาเรยน

ในสงทเปนประโยชนแกบานเมองแลวหมอมฉนกจะรสกอมใจเหมอนกน...”

สงนไดทำใหพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรทรงเปนพระมหากษตรยทอาณาประชาราษฎรรอคอยอยางแทจรง ดงท

สมเดจพระเจาบรมวงศเธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานภาพ เคยตรสไววา

“...บญญาภนหารเปนขอสำคญอกอยางหนงทไดพระชนนอยางพระชนนศรสงวาลย พอไมเคยคดเลยวาจะเปนผหญงทม

สตปญญาสามารถมาก เพงมาสงเกตในคราวน รจกวางพระองคเหมาะสมดทกสถาน ใครคนกตองนบถอและคอยคลายหวง

สมเดจพระอานนทมหดลเพราะมชนนดดวย...”

On the same occasion HRH Prince Damrong Rajanubharb also wrote a letter, dated November 14, 1938 to his daughter, Princess Chong Chitra Thanom Diskul, relating his pleasing impression of King Ananda Mahidol’s most charming manners. He writes: “...IwasgenuinelypleasedtohavetheopportunitytoobserveourKing.Heisacultivatedyoungmanwhodisplaysexceptionalintelligencefarbeyondhisyears.Healsoknowshowtoconducthimselfinamannerbefittingayoungmonarch.Everyone,Thaiorforeigner,whohasobservedhimcloselyhasnothingbutpraiseandisfilledwithadmirationforhim.” It was the Princess Mother’s unwavering determination to raise King Ananda Mahidol so that he would become a good monarch. This can be seen in an excerpt from her letter to the Queen Grandmother,“...ImyselfmaynotbeabletocontributeverysignificantlytothecountrybutifIcanseetoitthatthechildrenareschooledandtrainedinsuchawaythattheylearnwhatwillbehelpfultothecountryinthefuture,Ishallfeelequallycontented...” With such noble intentions, King Ananda Mahidol would one day become an exemplary monarch who would truly fulfil the hopes and expectations of his people. As HRH Prince Damrong Rajanubharb once mentioned, “...thesheerpowerofmeritwasoneimportantreasonfortheKingtohavethelikesofthePrincessMotherSriSangvalyaashisparent.Ithadnevercrossedmymindthoughthatshewouldprovesuchawomanofsubstance.Ijusthappenedtoreallyobservehercloselyonthisoccasionandsawthatshecouldcarryherselfappropriatelyinallsituations.Anyonewhoearnsheracquaintancewillhavehighrespectforher.MyconcernforthewelfareofKingAnandaMahidolhasnowmuchabatedafterrealisingthatheisblessedwithsuchawonderfulmother...”

มธยมปลายจนสำเรจ กอนจะทรงศกษาระดบอดมศกษาในคณะนตศาสตรและการปกครองในมหาวทยาลยโลซานน แตในระหวางนน

ไดเกดสงครามโลกครงท ๒ ขน (พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๒ - ๒๔๘๘) ทำใหเกดภาวะความวนวายทงดานการเมองและเศรษฐกจ โดยเฉพาะ

ปญหาขาวยากหมากแพงทไดสงผลกระทบไปทวโลก แมแตทประเทศสวตเซอรแลนดเอง รฐบาลยงตองดำเนนนโยบายปนสวน

อาหารใหแกประชาชน เพอแกไขปญหาการขาดแคลนเครองอปโภคบรโภค โดยประชาชนมสทธในการแลกไขไดเดอนละ ๓ ฟอง

ตอคน เดกจะไดรบการปนสวนเนอและนมมากกวาผใหญ ทงเนอและนำตาลกลายเปนของหายาก ในขณะทนำมนเปนสงท

At the same time, HRH Prince Chula Chakrabongse also shared the same favourable impression of King

Ananda Mahidol’s excellent manners as evident from sentiments shared with the British ambassador:

“...HisMajestyissuchacharmingyounglad.Oncehissubjectshavetheopportunitytoseehimin

person,theywillfindithardtoresistshowingtheirloveandaffectionforhim...”

Returning to Switzerland, King Ananda Mahidol completed his high school education and furthered his

study in laws and political science at the University of Lausanne. However, that time coincided with the

outbreak of World War II (1939-1945) which had serious political and economic repercussions throughout the

world. The cost of living soared and food shortages became widespread, including in Switzerland where the

government had to introduce measures for the rationing of food and other basic necessities. People were

entitled to only three eggs per person per month. Children’s rations of meat and milk were more than that for

an adult. Both meat and sugar were scarce while fuel was not available at all. King Ananda Mahidol, his

mother, brother and sister happily and willingly received the same food rations as the Swiss people. King

Ananda Mahidol became acquainted with living a modest life and, like any commoner, he would commute to

his university by bicycle. The Princess Mother churned her own butter and made fruit jam for the family and

everybody had to use ash instead of soap for their washing needs.

The Two Monarchs’ Brotherly Bond of Love Sharing the same upbringing of tender, love and care from the Princess Mother, King Ananda Mahidol

and King Bhumibol Adulyadej were loving brothers who were totally devoted to each other. Growing up

together, the two were intimate and inseparable; they were more than brothers. HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana

writes about their love for each other in her book, “Chao Nai Lek Lek - Yuwakasat” (From Little Princes to

Young Kings):

“...Motherboughtausedbicycleformeandasmalloneformylittlebrothers.Shewrotetothe

QueenGrandmother,‘ItaughtPhraOngChai(KingAnandaMahidol)howtoridethebicycleforonly

about15minutesbeforehecouldmasterthetaskonhisown.Hethenwentontoholdthebicycleforhis

youngerbrother,PhraOngLek(KingBhumibolAdulyadej)whocouldridealittle...’”

When they were young, both King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej were both very

energetic and mischievous as mentioned by HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana in the same book that,

“...OnedayMotherheardsomeboisteroussingingfromthesewingroom.Uponentering,shesaw

thatthetwoprinceswereperformingaHawaiiandancewearingaskirtthathadbeenleftonthearmof

thechairformending.Theseamsoftheskirtwerecomingapart.Motheraskedthemwhytheyhaddone

suchathingtoherskirt.Theanswerwasthattheyhadfoundtheskirtlyingonthefloorandtheytookit

tohavebeendiscarded.Motherfinedthemtwofrancseach...”

การสะสมรปรถแขงกเปนกจกรรมอกอยางหนงททงสองพระองคทรงสนพระราชหฤทย โดยทรงนยมสะสมรปรถแขงของ

บรษทใหญๆ เชน Auto Union และ Mercedes-benz เพราะเวลานนประเทศไทยไดมชอเสยงดานการแขงรถ อนเกดจากการท

พระวรวงศเธอ พระองคเจาพระพงศภาณเดช หรอ Prince Bira ทรงชนะการแขงขนรถยนตระดบภาคพนยโรป สรางชอเสยงให

กบประเทศไทยเปนอนมาก จนกระทงไดรบสมญานามวา “เจาดาราทอง” และเมอพระวรวงศเธอ พระองคเจาพระพงศภาณเดช

เสดจมาทรงแขงขนทกรงเบอรน เมองหลวงของประเทศสวตเซอรแลนดถง ๒ ครง ทงสองพระองคไดเสดจพระราชดำเนนไป

นอกจากน ยงมกจกรรมอนๆ อกหลายประเภททพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรและพระบาทสมเดจพระเจาอยหว

รชกาลปจจบนทรงประกอบรวมกน เชน การทรงสก การทรงเทนนส การถายภาพ การทำอาหารกทรงทำดวยกนเสมอ แตกจกรรม

หนงททงสองพระองคทรงเลนดวยกนเปนเวลานานคอ การทรงดนตร โดยพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรโปรดการเลน

เปยโนกอน ในขณะทพระบาทสมเดจพระเจาอยหวรชกาลปจจบนโปรดทจะทรงหบเพลง (accordion) รวมถงทรงคลารเนต

(clarinet) และแซกโซโฟน (saxophone) ดวย

Raising pets was another favourite activity of both young princes. For example, they bought a black and

white mouse as a pet and named it Fifi. Together, they also arranged a burial ceremony for a dead snake they

found in the garden, erecting a cross that they made themselves above the snake’s burial site.

Another activity that the two brothers were interested in was collecting pictures of racing cars. Their

favourites were cars of major companies such as Auto Union and Mercedes-benz. They were passionate about

car racing because at that time Thailand had earned a certain amount of fame following the success of Prince

Birabongse Bhanudej or Prince Bira who had won many championships on the European race circuits. Prince

Bira brought a lot of fame to Thailand and was given the nickname of the “Gold Star Prince”. Both princes

attended the two races that Prince Bira participated in at the circuit in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

Besides these two areas of interest, there were many other favourite pastimes for the royal brothers such

as skiing, playing tennis, photography and cooking. One activity that held their interest for a long time was

music. King Ananda Mahidol was the first to show an interest in playing the piano while King Bhumibol

Adulyadej preferred the accordion. After becoming bored with these instruments, they switched to the clarinet

and saxophone.

ทรงมกจกรรมอกอยางหนงททงสองพระองคไดทรงวางแผน กำหนดนโยบาย และรวมกนทำอยางจรงจงคอ ทรงรวมกนกอตง “สโมสรปาตาปม” (Club Patapoum) โดยมจดมงหมายเพอเลนสนกกนในหมพนอง มการแตงตงกรรมการและสมาชกมากมาย ซงมเพยงในนาม เพราะในความเปนจรงมเพยงพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรและพระบาทสมเดจพระเจาอยหวรชกาลปจจบนเทานน ทดำรงตำแหนง ดงทสมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทร ทรงพระนพนธไววา “...ทงสองพระองคสลบกนไปสลบกนมาเปนตวตำแหนงจรงและตำแหนงรองชอแปลกๆ นสวนมากจะใชกนระหวางสองพระองค โดยเฉพาะพระอนชามชอวาRaoul,GontranและleGommeux ชอสดทายนมาจากไหนและหมายความวาอะไรขาพเจากไมทราบแตในพระราชหตถเลขาทพระเจาอยหวรชกาลท๘ทรงมมาถงขาพเจาในป ๒๔๘๙ ยงทรงใชอย...ไมเคยทราบวตถประสงคของสโมสรน แตกคงเปนการแสวงหาผลประโยชนใหแกสโมสรการหาความสนกและในขณะเดยวกนเปนการทำบญ...” ทงพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรและพระบาทสมเดจพระเจาอยหวรชกาลปจจบน ตางเปนพระบรมเชษฐาและพระราชอนชาท ใกลชดกนอยางยง ในยามทพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรเสดจขนครองราชยและเสดจพระราชดำเนนไปทรงประกอบพระราชกรณยกจตางๆ ไมวา ณ ทแหงใด จะไดเหนพระราชอนชาเคยงคอยดวยเสมอ เสมอนเปนบคคลเดยวกน และเปนเงาซงกนและกน สมดงทสมเดจพระเจาพนางเธอ เจาฟากลยาณวฒนา กรมหลวงนราธวาสราชนครนทร ตรสไววา “...ทรงเปนมากกวาพนอง ทรงเปนเหมอนแฝดกนเลย และทรงเปนเพอนทรกกนมากกวาเพอนอนๆ...” อาจกลาวไดวาวยเยาวของพระบาทสมเดจพระอฐมรามาธบดนทรเปนชวงเวลาทอบอน สมบรณพรอมทงกายและใจ เปนการหลอหลอมใหพระองคเปน “ลกทด” อกทงยงเปนพระมหากษตรยทประเสรฐ เตมเปยมดวยพระเมตตากรณาตามเยยงอยางบรพกษตรยแหงราชจกรวงศ ดงทประชาชนชาวไทยจะไดซาบซง เมอครงทเสดจนวตประเทศไทยครงทสองในป พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๘ ทรงปฏบตหนาท พระประมขของชาตอยางเตมท Another activity that the two princes seriously undertook, setting policies and participating avidly in, was the founding of “Club Patapoum”. Its main objective was to have fun between brothers. The club’s committees were set up and the membership of the Club soon expanded but these members were all imaginary figures because only the two of them ever held any positions in the Club. HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana writes,

“...Thetwoofthemtookturnstobetheheadandthedeputyof thosecommittees.Theydevisedsomehumorousnames thatwere knownonly to them.The youngerbrotherhadthenamesofRaoul,Gontran,andleGommeux.IdonotknowwherethelastonecamefromorwhatitsmeaningwasbutKingAnandaMahidol stillused thisname ina letter I received fromhim in1946...IhaveneverfoundoutabouttherealobjectivesofthisClubbutitwasprobablytoseeksomebenefit, tohavefunand,atthesametime,tomakemerit...” As brothers, King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej always maintained a particular closeness. After his ascension to the throne, whenever King Ananda Mahidol performed his royal duties he was always accompanied by his younger brother; they were inseparable like shadows of each other. This is confirmed in the words of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. “...They were more than brothers, more like twin, and closer than the closest friends...” I t can be said that King Ananda Mahidol’s childhood was one of perfect contentment both physically and emotionally. It was during this period that he evolved into a “good son” and a compassionate and benevolent monarch in the tradition of past kings of the Chakri Dynasty. For this reason, the Thai people were most gratified when the young King returned to Thailand for a second time in 1945 and fully took up his role as leader of the country.
