INFORMATIONS ÉPIDÉMIOLOGIQUES — EPIDEMIOLOGICAL NOTES

GRIPPE INFLUENZA

' Voir N» 1. p. 7.• Voir N« 49, p. 611.

America

In the United States ^ the holiday period may have caused some undercounting of registered deaths at the end of the year; 10 504 deaths from all causes and 486 deaths attributed to influenza and pneumonia vs'ere recorded in large cities during the week ended 28 December (11 997 and 565 the previous week).

Europe

In Sweden \ the number of cases registered which reached more than 45 000 from 5 to 11 November, dropped to less than 9 000 during the week ended 16 December. At the end of the month the epidemic had practically ended in the central and southern parts of the count^ and was rapidly decreasing in the northern regions. Since the beginning of December it appears that incidence of upper respiratoiy diseases other than influenza is increasing.

In Switzerland'^, the epidemic is rapidly decreasing; 2 502 notifications were recorded from 15 to 21 December (4 488 the previous week). 24 deaths were attributed to influenza in towns of more than 10 000 inliabitants.

* Dieldrin resistance characteristically extends to aldrin, BHC, chlordane and other cyclodiene derivatives.

Subsequent studies have shown that dieldrin resistance extends over a large area of W, Sokoto in which Kano is included.

‘ Susceptibility to chlorinated hydrocarbons unknown. BHC not tested In Skala. Resistance in Greece recognized since 1951.

* Resistance recognized by ARAMCO at an earlier date,A. subpictus subpictus resistance to DDT has been found in Delhi State, India

* (1957) where the species is not a vector of malaria.
