Horror is a film genre seeking to trigger a negative emotional reaction from the audience by playing on the audience's primal fears.

Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, supernatural being or person. Horror films often cross

over with the thriller genre.

The first horror movie, only about two minutes long, was made by the French filmmaker Georges Melies, titled Le Manoir Du Diable (1896) (aka The

Devil's Castle/The Haunted Castle.

Horror: What is it and what is its purpose?

A subgenre is a category within another genre, e.g. horror is a genre and gothic horror is a subgenre. Here are 4 example:

Subgenres of Horror

Slasher HorrorThis subgenre deals with a lot of violence which usually revolves

around a psychopathic serial killer stalking and killing a numerous amount of victims.

Psychological Horror

Relies on a characters fears, guilt and belief, emotional instability and, at times, the supernatural to build the

tension and further the plot. The horror comes from the reality of this particular sub genre.

Science Fiction Horror

Science fiction horror films are a subgenre of science fiction and horror films, often revolving

around subjects that include but are not limited to alien invasions, mad scientists, and/or

experiments gone wrong.

Comedy Horror

Comedy-Horror combines comedy with traditional horror movie themes and characters. Comedy-Horror films aim to scare the audience, but also provide

comical outlets that let the audience laugh at their fear. A lot of Comedy Horrors are parodies.
