Educational Technology 1
Technology and Education
In today’s higher education environment, either you stay ahead of technology or you get left behind.
What is Technology?
a broad concept that deals with the usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects the ability to control and adapt to the environment.
Technology Generated Tools Television Set Cassette Player DVD/VCD Player Projector Cell Phones Telephone Computer Machines
Technology offers powerful learning tools that demand new skills and understandings of students and provides new ways to engage student.
Technology is being used more not only in administrative duties in education
but also in the instruction of students. Computer technology represents access to new worlds. Computers provide
information -- text, audio and graphic-based -- about new areas of learning, new places, new shapes, new worlds.
The computer is able to take on even more critical roles as "information grabbers" and organizers for individuals, schools and businesses.
By making written communications easier, computers can't help but boost our children's productivity and communications skills.
Like the telephone, computers have the power to bring people closer together
Multimedia training can be less expensive than bringing employees and instructors together in one classroom.
Technology brings individuals in competency than ignorance to global situation.
Making students exert less effort in studying. Typical online education offerings a substantial narrowing of the concept of
education to the detriment of students.
Online instructor finds grinding courseware development time costs, burdensome maintenance requirements, intrusive student e-mail demands, open-ended needs to stimulate and supervise online discussion, and other
practical difficulties. Fewer faculty teach many more students -- a process in which there will be
more losers than winners
Proposals for electronic teaching require diverting limited university resources from traditional areas into new academic empires to be based on educational
technology. Online education is intrinsically very demanding of valuable faculty time Make students want clear, precise, objectives-oriented curricula which may
represent a narrowing of education, and may make them unlikely candidates for collegial work on faculty research projects.
Technology offers dehumanization in some aspects of living.
Future of Education based on Technology Education will become highly interactive, engaging the student every
20 seconds or so for a response, much in contrast to present-day passive lecture methods.
Education will become highly individualized, with world-accessible records of learning attempts by particular students, to enable computer presentation of education tailored for each student's past learning experiences and styles.
Education will become highly flexible in interaction, enabling natural-language tutoring using the Socratic method of tutorial question and student response.
Education will become highly accessible, opening opportunities for the disadvantaged in this country as well as for the millions in developing nations.
Education will become highly computer-mediated, replacing the lecture method in courses for 15 or more students.
Distance education will begin to displace campus-based education because the high costs of an interactive computer-mediated course can be justified only through their use by a large number of students than only distance education can provide.
Why use Technology? Use technology comprehensively to
develop proficiency in 21st century skills.
Use technology comprehensively to support innovative teaching and learning.
Use technology comprehensively to create robust education support systems.
Why teach about technology? People control technology, and technology can be
used for activities that are meaningful to people. Technology can take different forms, as in
calculators, telephones, and tape recorders. It provides different, useful things in a variety of ways.
Technology has rules that control how it works. Objects must have a source of power -- they have plugs or batteries; computers must have instructions -- either built-in or provided by the user.
Computer programs require different ways of organizing thinking. Some will ask you to match and rhyme, others will give you the freedom to draw or paint whatever you wish.
THE ROLE TECHNOLOGY CAN PLAYIN PREPARING OUR CHILDRENFOR THE 21st CENTURY
Computers offer children highly individualized learning experiences
Computers can be very accommodating -- they can reach students at different study levels, any time of the day or night.
The sense of independence and accomplishment a computer offers children helps fuel their self-confidence.
KEY AREAS TO TECHNOLOGY EXPOSURE
