universities

An updated abstractCINF 22Lai Im Lancaster, [email protected] and Brian Maurice Lynch, [email protected]. Department of Chemistry and Angus L. MacDonald Library, St. Francis Xavier University, 1 West Street, Antigonish, NS B2G 2W5, CanadaIn earlier CINF presentations we illustrated low-cost recording/storage and possible integration of audio files with slide shows and movies. [Note 1]Now, we describe further applications providing background material relevant to our local chemical informatics resources ["cinf-R"] and to inter-university distribution of keynoteresearch presentations at regional conferences.[Note 2]. cinf-R patterns differ in Canadian degree-granting institutions from many other countries;a national consortium [Canada Research Knowledge Network] provides free access to Over 2000 Journals in the fields of science, technology, and health for every university in Canada.[Note 3]We will demonstrate examples of local electronic access to the complete full text and abstracts sets of ACS and RSC journals, to the complete set of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry, and also to references accessed from the CRKN resources.[Note 4]

An updated abstract [contd.]CINF 22We will also illustrate some examples of output formats for the free resourcePubChem, using some personally relevant antihypertensive drugs,Including metformin, labetalol, furosemide, and minoxidil. Finally, we will indicate a recent advance in scanner technology, which wesuggest will make it possible to archive many “orphaned” journals where the publisher or publishing society’s resources have hitherto been insufficient to coverarchiving costs.

We are highlighting this presentation bya rare event: dedicating our offeringto a collaborative effort between our

federal government and64 university libraries across Canada!

Note 3Canadian Research Knowledge Network [CRKN] formerly CNSLP [Canadian National Site Licensing Project]Thanks to the CNSLP), researchers in Canadian universities now have access to a greatly expanded range of electronic journals and databases. This nation-wide university library initiative was undertaken to provide the academic community with desktop access to scholarly journals and research databases, emphasizing science, health, engineering and environmental content.

Initially a three-year pilot project (2001-2004), CNSLP was jointly funded

through an award from the federal government's Canada Foundation for

Innovation (CFI) and contributions from 64 participating institutions,

Totalli ng Can.$50 million.

The initial negotiations with publishers provided access to approximately 750

journals, including the complete archives of ACS and the

RSC, and after the initial awards and a change of name to Canadian Research

Knowledge Network, a continuing system with access to

about 2250 journals was established.

Very recently, a further fund of Can. $20 million has been established for

corresponding subscriptions to journals in the humanities and social sciences.

Dear CSC Members:The electronic edition of the Canadian Journal of Chemistry now includes back issues from 1951 to 1997. Along with the Canadian Council of University Chemistry Chairs, the CSC contributed to this ambitious project, which consisted of adding 46 volumes. In appreciation, the NRC Research Press is happy to grant CSC members free access to the full text of these back issues at http://canjchem.nrc.ca.
