Online Personal Branding for Unesco-IHE Academics using Twitter
Impact Online Media on society
Now
Why every academic should be on social media and Twitter
Before publication:
Use Twitter to: ● connect with academics in your field● ask questions (“crowdsourcing”)● spread the word about the research
you’re undertaking
After publication:
● shout out about your work● reach your peers● reach new and unexpected audiences● increase downloads● increase citations (in time)● increase impact● be invited to speak
Some more advantages of Twitter for academics
● availability for questions without the long intros / inquiring emails
● creating an active presence as an academic
In the Netherlands, Twitter is still the no. 1when it comes to news
Just an example of someone who has benefited from claiming his topics online
This could be you

I am a scientist at Delft University of Technology. I solve my problems using a MacGyver attitude. I build measurement devices using scavanged parts from consumer-electronics. I connect existing online data sources to answer relevant scientific questions. I encourage my students to learn by discovering, building and doing.
