USES OF THE INTERNET
Imagine a scenario where you want to
communicate by using a computer on your
network with a computer on another network.
For this, both the networks need to be
connected.
The Internet is a collection of networks that are
connected together for exchange of
information. When the computer is connected
to the Internet, it is said to be online.3
This illustration describes the various uses of the Internet.

To connect to the Internet, you need a:
• Computing device,• A connection device• An Internet Service Provider (ISP).

TYPES OF INTERNET CONNECTIONS
There are two different types of Internet connections:
1. dedicated Internet connections
2. dial-up Internet connections.
You can choose the type of connection depending on your requirement and budget.

WEBSITE
A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or address is the standard convention for specifying the location of every resource on the Internet.
You have to specify a URL in order to open a resource. This resource can be a document or service.

http:// Indicates the protocol to be used to access a file.
www Indicates that the Web site is on the Web.
Microsoft Indicates the name of the domain.
.com Indicates the type of domain.
/learning/default.asp Indicates the path of the document.

HYPERLINK
Pages on the web are interconnected. You connect to other pages by clicking text or graphics that are called hyperlinks.Hyperlinks are underlined words or bordered graphics that have web addresses embedded in them.By clicking a hyperlink, you jump to a particular page in a particular web site. You can easily identify a hyperlink. Hypertext links are of different colour from the rest of the text in a web site. Surfing the web means following hyperlinks to different web pages. As you surf around the web, you may find pages you have read about or seen mentioned on the television.

USING INTERNET APPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH AND COMMUNICATION
WEB BROWSER
To use the Web you need a client called an Internet browser.
One of the first Web Browsers was Mosaic developed by Netscape founder Marc Andreeseen and was released by National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).
A Web browser helps you to view the contents of the Internet and to help you to do mailing and
downloading of software.
Here are some commonly used browsers:
• Microsoft Internet Explorer
• Mozilla
• Netscape Communicator

USING SEARCH ENGINE
There are millions of documents on the Internet. Those that we access through links are only a
handful. In order to make more Web pages available for us all there are some organisations that
have created and maintained an Internet Search tool that is free for all to use.

TECHNIQUES TO USE SEARCH ENGINE
Doing a search on Google is easy. Simply type one or more search terms (the words or
phrase that best describe the information you want to find) into the search box and hit
the 'Enter' key or click on the Google Search button.
