Welcome to March’s About Thetford

Magazine...Your magazine this month may feel a bit thicker than

usual. That’s because we’ve needed to increase the

number of pages from 48 to 56 due to the number of

community news stories and advertisers now wishing to

be a part of your monthly magazine.

Inside this month you will find a whole host of events,

activities and news to occupy your time, including

details about your chance to influence how £10,000

will be awarded to good causes locally through the

Participatory Budgeting scheme and two new features.

The ‘I remember when’ page, to compliment the ever

popular ‘Thetford’s Past and Present’ section and a page

focused on beauty advise from Caroline King of Stepping

Stones training academy to complement the regular

skincare section from Halcyon Days.

Plus, there’s several pages outlining local sporting

success for Thetford Golf Club and boxing with Milo Clay

and details about the 10k run taking place in Thetford

Forest in aid of Action for Children - if you are taking part,

let us know and send us your pictures!

Finally, may we wish all our readers who are mothers a

very special Mother’s Day, including to our Mum - Elaine,

who works so hard supporting all of us, and others.

Best wishes, Terry, Ricky and Michelle

Local twist to menu as Zaks American Diner comes to Thetford!

Terry Jermy meets with Chief Operating Officer - Chris Carr to find out more for the About Thetford magazine.

The specials menu for Zaks American Diner that’s opening soon in the former Bridge Pub will be getting a Thetford twist with the introduction of three new burgers. The ‘A11 burger’, the ‘Portugueser’ and the ‘Dads Army burger’ will be added in homage to the town.

The new restaurant located just off the A1066 Diss road is set to open towards the end of March / early April and represents the culmination of several years of planning and hard work.

Chris Carr, Chief Operating Officer said; “Thetford is a great place and we’re so pleased with the location for our new restaurant. What with the river running past and being so close to Castle Park and the other green spaces – it’s the perfect location. We know that Thetford already has a number of great places to eat including restaurants and cafes but we are aware that many people are driving out of Thetford on occasions for meals – we want to provide people with an option that is affordable, but offers excellent quality. We want people to get the Zaks experience! Thetford deserves that! Zaks makes a conscious effort to purchase from local butchers and grocers and we put a lot of effort into creating the right atmosphere with internal and external decoration. We’re so pleased with the reaction that we have received on social media to our Thetford plans and we look forward to opening in the very near future”.

Zaks recently held two recruitment days at the Charles Burrell Centre that saw 170 people applying for the 40 jobs available. Chris Carr said; “We love the feel of the Centre. As a thank-you for the support provided to us

at our recent event we will be making a donation to the Foodbank that is based there and we look forward to using the Centre in the future for our training activities”.

The former Bridge Pub has been redundant for a number of years and after being purchased by Blue Sky Leisure, it received a ½ million pound investment to get it ready for opening. As part of the plans, a wildflower riverbank space will be created. There will initially be space for 110 covers.

Zaks was established in 1976 and since then has built a passionate customer following. The business is a Norwich institution having started as a “caravan” in the centre of the city before quickly expanding to the Mousehold restaurant in the late 1970’s, then Waterside in the 1980’s. In 1999 Zaks was acquired by Blue Sky Leisure, which then opened Zaks Poringland in 2005. The business has capitalised on the recent growth in the informal dining market experiencing strong year on year turnover growth for the last 5 years. The Zaks Diner at Mousehold Heath and Zaks Waterside Grill & Bar on Barrack Street in Norwich and Zaks Diner in Poringland Diner all offer their famous burgers as well an extensive choice of authentic American Food in a fun and relaxed environment. Zaks’ current locations are all neighbourhood based. This is part of its unique proposition and success as their diners are meeting places for the local community and form a social hub for the areas in which they operate.

Our January ‘Community Hero’ receives his reward.... and donates it to charity.

Digby Smith was our very first Community Hero who you may remember appeared in our January edition. Digby was nominated by two people for his work that he has done for the past 7 years running the 'River Corridor Group'. Every Thursday he and his team walk the corridor of the river, and surrounding area working to keep our beautiful rivers, riverbanks and footpaths clean and tidy.

In return for winning Community Hero, Digby was rewarded with £50 to spend with an advertiser of his choice from the February magazine. However Digby being true to his kind and caring character is donating his £50 to Cancer Research, which has a significant meaning to him and feels the charity would have better use for it than he would. We congratulate Digby for his continuous hard work, and commitment to our town.

Digby and his wife receiving his reward from Shane Hinkley - Manager of Thetford Garden Centre

We are pleased to announce that our March Community Hero is Vera Rhodes, she was nominated by Danny Jeffrey for her continuous work with the local people.

Vera moved to Thetford from London in 1963, where she became a carer at the Cottage Hospital for 20 years. In 1970 Vera became a Occupational Rehab Assistant and continued with this role till 1991 when she retired.

After Vera retired she continued with a carers group for another 20 years, running bingo for the residents and an art class every week. This amazing woman did not stop there, she, also with the warden, ran all the social events. Vera, now 87 years, has been offered retirement, but she feels she can continue and will do so. She still runs a club every Monday where she has people come from outside to take part in quizzes, musical movement, and making crafts which they sell to reinvest back into the club.

Vera is very proud of herself for what she has accomplished, and so are the residents of Thetford.

Our March ‘community hero’ - Vera Rhodes (right) with Danny Jeffery who nominated her.

What’s it all about? Those of us that live in Thetford know that we have a very vibrant community and we have many local residents that go that extra distance to support community life in the town. That’s why we feature a different ‘community hero’ each month to recognise those people that so often go unrecognised for their efforts. Readers are asked to nominate someone that you feel should be recognised as a ‘community hero’. Someone who you believe works

hard to support community life, or perhaps goes that extra mile. Send you nominations to:

Community Hero, About Thetford Magazine C/o 21 Crecy Mews, Thetford, IP24 2ZB or E-mail:

[email protected] Nominations must be received by the

15th of each month

We are very grateful that Thetford Garden Centre are the official sponsor of this feature and donate £50

each month to the winner

Have your say on how £10k is spent to help get Thetford and surrounding Parishes active!

Local community groups and town and parish councils are hoping to secure a share of £10,000 to help get Thetford and surrounding Parishes more active.

‘Your Budget, Your Decision’ is a Participatory Budgeting (PB) scheme being delivered by local organisations in partnership with the Breckland Pride Board across Breckland. PB is defined as ‘Local people deciding how to allocate part of a public budget’. £10,000 has been made available to fund projects in Thetford and surrounding parish areas, which meet the Breckland Pride Board priorities of Getting Active:

1. Getting older people and carers active2. Getting young children and parents active

3. Getting towns and villages active4. Getting workplaces active

Applications for the Participatory Budgeting fund have now closed. A panel of community representa-tives and elected members reviewed the eligibility of the applications received and 16 applicants will be put to the public vote. The power is in your hands to decide which projects receive a share of the funding!

The community panel decided to split the total allocation of £10,000 into two types of funding: £7,500 for Town and £2,500 for Rural applicants, which is representative of the proportional number of applications from the different areas. Awards of the amount applied for, up to £1,000, will be decided by public vote, with members of the public invited to vote for their favourite three projects in each category. Residents in Thetford and surrounding Parishes are invited to attend the Public Decision event on Wednesday 4th March, 5.30-9.00pm at the Keystone Innovation Centre, Croxton Road where the shortlisted applicants will present their projects and compete for your votes. To book your place call Maria on 01842 768300 or email [email protected]

If you are unable to attend the event you can still have your say by visiting Thetford Leisure Centre, Thetford Academy or Thetford Town Council – Kings House and completing a voting slip by Monday 2nd March. Please note you can only vote once, multiple votes will not be counted.

Learn, laugh, and live!

Piloting hovercraft and abseiling down a 170-metre tower might not appear to be the average challenge for people in their ‘third age’, but that’s exactly what some members of the University of the Third Age get up to. Including members of Thetford U3A, where there’s plenty of appetite for adventure, extreme or otherwise. As well as learning more about the world and doing things they never had time for when they were bringing up families or in full-time employment.

Most U3A activities are organised between 9am and 5pm during the week, when others have to be at work, and with over 40 interest groups, from Art to Wine, including Cycling, Electronics, Genealogy, Languages, and Science & Technology, there really is something for everyone. And if members need something else, help is on hand to start up another group.

Anyone of any age can join Thetford U3A, as long as you are retired, semi-retired or no longer looking after the family. You don't even have to live in Thetford. Many of our members live in the nearby villages and communities. Monthly general meetings are held in the Carnegie Room opposite the Library, and everyone is welcome (non members pay £2 on the door, which is refunded to those who join on the same day).

One aspect of being in the U3A is making new friends with similar interests. And there is plenty of

opportunity to join organised lunches, walks, day trips or even holidays. Usually we have educational and entertaining talks, but the meeting on Thursday March 26th is the first Annual General Meeting and open only to existing members or those who want to join. The forthcoming programme includes, in April, Kate Brewster of The Dogs Trust; in June P Sankey-Smith on the history of cottage gardens; in July, Richard Gibbons on the Cuban missile crisis and, in August, Rachel Scrafield on Norfolk bees.

Take Good Care of YourselfBy Dr Matt Piccaver

Everyday when we open our papers, look at our tablets or watch the news, we can't help but read about the National Health Service. "NHS in crisis" seems to be the message, whichever direction you look in. The NHS of Aneurin Bevan's day was not designed for the challenges it now faces. A growing and aging population, with the added scourge of obesity, places mounting pressure on our health service. Couple to that the "everything now" culture we seem to be developing, and it's no wonder we're all buckling under the strain.

We seem to have forgotten that illness is allowed. Nobody seems to be allowed to have a cold, sore throat or runny nose without justification from a healthcare worker that they are ill. Workplaces put increasing pressure on people to go in regardless, spreading their contagion, rather than taking time off to recover.

We seem to have forgotten the simple advice our parents and grandparents once gave us. For the past few decades, the medical profession has been encouraging us to visit a doctor, medicalising all parts of life. As a GP, I seem to have a role that never ends. Frequently I am asked about things I feel are beyond my expertise, be it relationships, financial advice, or even toilet training. Whilst I am flattered that people feel I can answer such questions, I must sadly express ignorance. It's not nice letting people down.

Over the next few years, you'll be seeing a greater emphasis on self care. We simply do not have the resources in the NHS to do everything asked of us. Paid out of tax, and free at the point of delivery, NHS funding is finite. The continued existance of this great institu-tion depends on the staff, staying late, working extra shifts, and going "above and beyond" every day. So much so that "above and beyond" is seen as the norm. The more that is given, the more that is taken. I sus-

pect if we had to pay every time we had to go to A&E or see our GP, the queues wouldn't be half as long. This is something may of us in the NHS are against, including me.

So how can we take better care of ourselves. The usual messages about balanced diet, plenty of exercise and your "five-a-day" should now be ingrained in our psyche. What happens when we do get ill? Keep a stock of simple home remedies, be they paracetamol, cold and flu remedies, antihistamines or antiseptic cream. Invest in a first aid kit. Your local pharmacist is often a great source of information on minor illness and how to make yourself feel better. Use technology to help. NHS Choices is a fantastic resource, and the symptom checker may help in deciding if you need to see a doctor. It is full of useful information, including knowing when you need to worry.

Don't forget you are allowed to be ill. None of us are impervious. Most sore throats settle within a couple of weeks, as do most coughs and colds. Ear aches tend to go within three days. If everyone who had a minor self limiting illness helped themselves, there would be more room in the system for the seriously unwell. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and if someone is getting sicker, they will need to see a doctor.

The NHS is bursting at the seams. Up until now we've been able to cope, but this feels more and more difficult as time goes by. It is the ONLY system like it in the world. Many countries have state funded healthcare, but there is only one NHS. If we begin to see it as a luxury, rather than a right, we might begin to use it more appropriately. And let's not forget, I'm a patient too.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER!

Thetford Methodist Players’ three performances of “Happily Ever After”, taking the fairy stories of Snow White and Cinderella into the characters’ later years, were received with enthusiasm, laughter and enjoyment, by their audiences as was reflected by their departing comments: ‘Better even than the last play!’, ‘Another success!’ ‘Enjoyed it so much’, ‘Looking forward to the next production’, ‘A cleverly written play’, ‘I always wondered what happened to Cinderella!’,‘Costumes were lovely!’, ‘Had such a good laugh!’

The Methodist Players once again demonstrated their great versatility, performing this “almost a panto!” with all the laughs, songs, romance, wickedness together with the requisite happy ending that is so necessary for the occasion. This show contrasting greatly with the truly moving performance in November of “Lest We Forget” as part of the Thetford Commemoration of World War One. These Players have been formed for nearly eight years and have staged some seventeen shows in that time, from the continuing story of “Much Chattering in the Marsh” to short Easter plays - all of which are written by Wendy Serjeant and Thelma Smith – truly home grown! Look out for their next show, it will be worth going along!

Number one has to be Sun Protection. More than anything else the sun is largely responsible for wrinkles, blotchy pigmentation, liver spots, together with many skin conditions. So it goes without saying the importance of wearing a sunscreen (minimum SPF15) and sunglasses to protect the delicate eye area has never been more important.

Smoking and smokey environments can cause lines and wrinkles as well as dilated broken capillaries. It restricts the blood vessels and depletesthe absorption of vitamins. Fitness; Try and take plenty of exercise. Carrying extra weight in areas under the chin, neck and cheeks can give the skin an older appearance. Try and drink plenty of water to help with re-hydration of the skin and to aid removal of toxins.Sleeping positions; Sleeping on your face can cause sleep wrinkles! Sleeping in the same position most of the night for years can permanently crease your skin. Scary stuff I know, so try sleeping on your back instead maybe with a lumbar support pillow.

Skin Care regime; Having a good skincare routine and being consistent with it is important. Never go to bed with your make up on. Cleanse A.M and P.M. There are several products on the market today which have been scientifically proven to improve the appearance of the skin without causing irritation. Alpha hydroxyl acids appear to achieve remarkable results, it is important though to check their strength.

And finally, remember to SMILE! - your face will conform to the expression that you carry most of the time. If you often frown or scowl the skin is more likely to develop lines and wrinkles between the eyes, down turning lines at the corners of the mouth or lines that conform to frowning expression. If however, you try smiling and having a pleasant, relaxed expression, this will be good for your face and will help you look younger instantly. Great news!

Caroline King - Beauty Geek…

Welcome to our new feature; as a local accredited training provider, beauty therapist and general hair and beauty geek. Over the past 20+ years that I have been in the industry, I get asked by lots of you questions all related to these topics. So now it’s your time to put me in the hot seat and email me at:[email protected] questions to do with hair, beauty, or nail treatments that you would like help or advice with. I am an avid blogger so please check out my latest postings.

Amy Bryant asks: “I am allergic to lanolin, what would be a good alternative make up remover for sensitive skin?” Amy I swear by coconut oil as my miracle product. It is so good on irritated, skins and great for other uses such as dry, cracked heels, as a make up remover, it is excellent at removing waterproof mascara as well, but kind to the skin. You can use it as a wonderful skin moisturiser or even in hair to sort out dry ends. Bonus is you can buy it from the supermarket too.

Zee Battersby and Bethany Dimon ask: “How do you achieve flawless looking skin and what’s the best long wear foundation?” Firstly flawless skin requires

hydration and that entails drinking lots of water to flush the system. Having a good night’s sleep and eating a well balanced diet will all give you a good start too. A good overall even skin tone and complexion can be achieved with the right foundation also. I swear by a brand called Airbase which is a silicone based product that moulds to your skin and

doesn’t shift all day. It has durability, it’s waterproof and it is a concealer, powder and foundation product all in one. It is a professional brand, but that also means that you are getting a highly pigmented, intense product, which in turn means you will need less to achieve the desired effect. I use this make up for all my professional work such as editorial, theatrical and wedding make up overs and it’s never failed!

I hope you have all found this feature of interest? I look forward to selecting some more questions next time.

“I’ve been struggling with my finances for a while, and now it’s got to the point where I can’t afford bills like council tax, rent or mortgage. I’m

worried that if I can’t find a solution soon, I might lose my home. What can I do?”

The months after Christmas can be particularly tough with the extra expenses over the festive period putting even more pressure on household budgets. However, with the right help there are ways to get on top of your outstanding bills. Firstly, the earlier you get help with debt problems the easier it is to get them sorted. Trying to carry on as if everything is normal can make things worse, as debts can pile up quickly. Letting creditors, like your landlord or mortgage lender, know you may be unable to pay them is key. Creditors should consider reasonable repayment plans and may be able to offer you more time to pay. It is important that you prioritise paying certain debts, such as the rent, mortgage or energy bills, first to keep a roof over your head and the heating on. Depending on your circumstances you may be able to get support through benefits, so it is worth checking this with the Department for Work and Pensions. If you are unable to pay your council tax debt the local authority may agree to let you pay a reduced payment over a longer period or even (in exceptional circumstances) write off the debt, although you will have to keep paying your ongoing bill going forward. Drawing up a proper budget can help identify areas you can cut down on. Before you turn to a loan to cover costs, think carefully and find out what this means for any future repayments, and interest that will be due on the loan. Citizens Advice Bureaux offer free, confidential and independent advice and may be able to help you get debt-free by looking at appropriate options available for you. If you need help, please telephone Thetford CAB on 01842 752777. Also, if you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to volunteer at your local CAB, we offer full training and support. Please pop in or telephone for an application form.

BollardsOver recent months, the number and variety of vehicles using the pedestrianised area covering King Street, Tanner Street and the Riverside Walk areas has increased and prompted several complaints from businesses, residents and pedestrians. The area is ONLY accessible to emergency vehicles and those who have already sought and received permission from Norfolk County Council. Therefore the bollards at the top of King Street (Well Street end) will shortly be reinstated and an application has also been submitted to Norfolk County Council to seek to have bollards installed at Tanner Street to prevent non-emergency access to the pedestrianised area here. Should you need to apply for permission to enter the area, please contact Highways at Norfolk County Council on 0345 800 8020.

THETFORD WOMEN’S INSTITUTE We now have around 50 members in our busy friendly group. We’re not all about Jam and Jerusalem, and enjoy a variety of interesting speakers at our monthly meetings. We also have a Lunch Club, a Book Club and other social get-togethers, as well as running two Darts Teams for the County competition and from time to time have friendly Scrabble games.

We try to be part of the community and amongst other things each year we support the Hanging Basket scheme. This year once again, we will be organising another Bake-Off cake competition as our contribution to Thetford’s Great Festival. This will take place on Saturday 22nd August at the Guildhall, and in due course entry forms will be available at The Leaping Hare. 2015 sees W.I nationally celebrating their 100th Centenary and Norfolk will be having various events to mark the occasion.

We always welcome new members and if you would like to find out more, please ring President Rose Peterson on 01842 754273.

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses welcomed Lois Baker, Community Ranger, from Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve. Lois gave a fascinating talk about the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve and England’s most

famous Fen. The fen has raised pathways which allows easy access to view the many species of birds, insects and plant life, making the fen suitable for most to visit. There is opportunity to hire a bicycle or to take a boat trip along the waterways. The visitor centre has many displays to enjoy and interact with. Wicken Fen is part of the National Trust which is reliant on membership and donations to fund maintaining and developing the fenland area. Lois was presented with a donation which will assist in the Fen’s development.

The purpose of the Nature Reserve is to protect green spaces and to look after special places for ever for everyone. The Lionesses thoroughly enjoyed the talk and are now keen to visit the Fen to view the attractions for themselves.

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses welcome new members.to our meeting held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month; for further information please contact Dorothy on 0845-334746Karren, Public Relations Officer

The members of Thetford Rotary were entertained by local Funeral Director Mark Skinner who gave an interesting talk on the changes to the Funeral Business in the last 30 years. Mark started his career as a carpentry apprentice to Harvey

Adams in Brandon, eventually taking over the business. The changes he has experienced are a significant drop in demand for religious funerals, the replacement of hymns by pop music, the novelty hearses including a yellow Reliant Robin, and the vast range of coffins and ashes urns now available. There is also a move back to Victorian Mourning Jewellery containing ashes of the deceased. He warned members of the increasing costs involved especially Burial and Crematorium fees. He has to take care of what is included in the coffin at cremations, apparently large amounts of alcohol can damage the installation. An increasing amount of metal hips, knees and other joints are recovered. The Crematoriums can sell the metal but cannot keep the proceeds. Bury Crematorium donates the money to Bury Hospital children wards. Rotarian Colin Mackay gave the vote of thanks.

February report

Didn’t they do well? This month, following our usual business meeting, Maggie Findlay came

to tell us all about the planning and making of “The Flintknapper’s Garden” for the Hampton Court Flower Show last year. It was good to see just how much local support and enjoyment was generated by a shared endeavour. I wonder what they will do next?

Mary Rolton. Club Correspondent.

The February meeting of the Thetford Society welcomed Nick Dickson the project manager of the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme. Nick explained how the project was managing a range of schemes following the award of nearly £1.5million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014 which would see £2.2m (including funding from partner organisations) spent delivering exciting Heritage and Landscape Projects in the Brecks.

The projects range from raising awareness of the Brecks unique character to developing plans to provide improved access to the area’s distinctive landscape. Ironically the HLF grant was achieved by the Brecks Partnership which was dissolved in December 2013 due to funding cuts.

The next meeting is on March 3rd at 7.30pm at the URC when David Osborne will talk about ‘Thetford in the Great War’. New members always welcome.

On Friday March 6th the Society is showing some home movies made by former Thetford dentist Mr Arthur Bagshaw in the Carnegie Room at 7.30pm.

Medieval tales worth telling today

Official business at Thetford Probus Club’s February meeting included welcoming new member Nigel King and a farewell to veteran-member Brian Bradbury, who died in January aged 93. This was marked by a minute’s silence The guest speaker was Mike Wabe, Thetford Town Crier and a man of many other guises – toastmaster, organiser of murder mystery events - on this occasion, story teller. Dressed as a monk which helped give a flavour of medieval England, he recounted three of Geoffrey Chaucer’s famous Canterbury Tales, which amuse, entertain and carry messages as pertinent today as they were centuries ago when they were written. Explaining the purpose of the tales, centred around the period when many people made the pilgrimage on foot to the Shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, Mr Wabe chose the Nun’s Priest’s Tale, the Reeve’s Tale and the Pardoner’s Tale, this last pointing to the corrupting influence of greed and how money is the root of evil.

Chaucer had many abilities, including being a civil servant in the City of London, but it was his writings in English as opposed to Latin or French – the accepted style in his day - that earned him the first place in Westminster Cathedral’s Poets Corner.

Thetford Flower ClubThetford Flower Club have continued their ‘40th Anniversary Year’ with a full programme. Following Committee members Pat Fuller, Joan Jest and Pat Lawrences’ participation in Bury Cathedrals’ Flower Festival last July, the Club has been active in the community. Members and friends enjoyed a successful ‘cheese and wine’ evening that raised funds for the club and charity donations in July. This was followed by Lynda Moore (Chairman) and Joan Jest (Treasurer) taking part in the Scarecrow Competition at the United Reformed Church - such fun and a fund raising event!

The photo shows the committee and the area President - Elsie Leeding enjoying our 40th Anniversary party in October. This was followed by a successful Christmas Party to end our successful 40th anniversary year as an affiliatedflower club. We are looking forward to a succesful fund raising 2015. We meet every third Thursday at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church. Come and join us, meet new friends and support local and national charities.Lynda Moore, Chairman and Press Officer(01842 762919)

Wild Stems comes to Thetford:

Shelley and her husband who works in the RAF have lived in Thetford for just over 14 months. After completing Armed Forces Unsung Hero Start up business course which recently featured on the BBC, it opened doors to open her own Floristry business called Wild Stems, Thetfords Designer Florist. Since opening, Wild Stems have done incredibly well so far in this year with Valentines Day, and are looking forward to creating all your wonderful bouquets for Mothers Day.

The phrase “mad as March hares” could be applied to the garden with everything bursting into life (especially the weeds). So now is the time to do a thorough sort-out if you want to stay in control through the rest of the year. Like the house, the garden benefits from a spring-clean. As well as removing dead material that has blown into the corners, you should cut back perennials that have made it through the winter. It is particularly tempting to leave ornamental grasses that still look well but there will be a much better show if you trim them back now. Big clumps of perennials can also be divided to spread the display of your favourite flowers.

If you plan to treat yourself to some bulbs to flower in the late summer and autumn, consider getting some Nerines. They are also known as Guernsey Lilies or Cornish Lilies but in fact come from South Africa. Consequently they like a sandy soil and full sun so just the thing for a sheltered spot in our gardens. Several places in Thetford have splendid shows with clouds of delicate pink lilies in September. There are tender types so look for the name Amarylis Bowdenii which is hardy. Plant them near the surface and let them crowd close together for the best results.

We should be enjoying great shows of daffodils this month. The club has contributed to the latest planting near the A11 roundabout near the Forest Park retail park. (Oh glorious new dualled A11 – isn't that a delight!) If you want a good show next year from your garden bulbs you need to let the leaves die back in spite of looking untidy. Giving the plants a feed and keeping them watered will help create a flowering bulb; otherwise the bulbs may be “blind”, sending uponly leaves.

Hybrid tea and floribunda roses will benefit from a resolute pruning. After taking out damaged wood and crossing or spindly stems, take the shoots back to half their height. Some people cut back even more severely. This keeps the bush in shape and stimulates strong flowering stems. The tradition is to prune roses when the forsythia comes into bloom which is a sign that Spring has really arrived.

Thetford Garden and

Allotment Club

Vegetable seeds can be sown as the ground warms up but give priority to parsnips if you intend to grow them. Seed directions often suggest sowing in February but in our chill soil early March should do it. Parsnips take weeks to germinate so an old trick is to sow radish seeds in the same furrow. Radishes germinate quickly so the line of sowing is visible and this will stop you hoeing up the parsnip seeds in despair. As well as eating the young radishes, you might like to try leaving a plant or two to go to seed. The radish will produce a masses of flowers and then dozens of pods. Eat them when they are about 3 cm long and fat and juicy; they have a mild radish taste and are wonderfully crunchy. They are attractive enough to have a place in the flower border too.

This month's talk on March 26th in the URC is Flower Arranging by Louise Bond. Non-members are very welcome. Flowers also take pride of place at our Spring Show which will be on April 11th at the Church on the Way. Do you have anything to show? The schedule is in the centre of the member's diary.

Brandon Camera Club

Spring hopefully is on its’ way and what better excuse to get outside, start a new interest and record those new beginnings. Join us at Brandon Camera Club and

find out a more about photography and how to catch that ‘special moment’. It is not necessary to buy the most expensive camera and equipment the market can offer; there are experts among us who can guide you to the cheaper options and still enable you to get wonderful results. We are always looking at innovative ways for us to test the waters before making that all important decision – “What camera shall I buy?”

Brandon & District Camera Club meet every other Wednesday at the Baptist Church Hall in High Street, Brandon at 7.30pm. The dates for the next few meetings are 18th February; 4th March and the18th March.

We like to try to keep the art of film photography alive and each year hold a competition for ‘snapshots’; photographs taken with a film camera. This has proved to be very popular in the past with a record number of entries this year. There is no set subject for the main competition so the world is your oyster! However, this year Pat Childerhouse has introduced a secondary competition and a little bit of fun – film titles, so any image that depicts or could depict a film title can be entered. The results for this competition will be announced on Wednesday 18th February, so why not come along and find out who won.

On the 4th March we are holding a Studio Workshop, examining portraiture and there will always be someone on hand to guide you to the right settings on your camera. On the 18th March we have a Tuition Evening on ‘Flash Photography’.

You are welcome to visit our website:

www.brandoncameraclub.co.uk

to find out a little more about us and view some of the images we have taken – we also look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 18th February.

Come & join our brilliant team:We are looking for volunteers to join our happyteam that do such a great job promotingThetford. Do you have a love of Thetford andwant to share your enthusiasm for the town?We don’t need much - honest!! Can you giveus 2 hours a month? That’s all we need, we’llobviously take more if you can offer it but don’tthink this needs to be lots of your time - it reallydoesn’t.

Our volunteers come from all age ranges andbackgrounds and they all have their favouritethings, some love the natural environment andshare with others their experience of localwalks. One is the organiser of Thetford OpenGardens, to name but a few of her roles! Wealso have Thetford’s Town Crier as part of theteam, fortunately he is just a little quieter in theshop. However, you do not need any specialtalents whatsoever, Jake, our office manager, will teach you everything you need to know.

Our latest volunteer has given us some toptips on re-arranging the shop - our regularcustomers will know that we do like to changeour display regularly and love to bring newThetford things to the town - look out in nextmonth’s About Thetford for more shop news.

Almost a Panto? It certainly was!Leaping Hare were very pleased to supportThetford Methodist Players in their latestshow and had a very enjoyable time - stillrecovering from the shock of the Dame mind, but that’s what panto is all about!

News from the Charles Burrell Centreby Mark Snowdon, Centre Manager

The rapid growth of Charles Burrell Centre has been the talk of the town in recent months. It’s a dramatic turnaround for an historic building that stood abandoned and unused this time last year. The long corridors throughout the building have been brought back to life and community spirit is clearly present for all to see. The centre is now home to twenty-five local businesses and community groups and there is still room for more to move in.

Not only is space available at competitive rates but also comes with a unique opportunity to establish business and community relations within a growing and thriving facility. This makes the location ideal for new or expanding businesses and organisations. The former classrooms have already seen drastic renovations as they take on new leases of life. Long term plans at the site include rconverting tennis courts to a games arena, developing external grounds to provide sports opportunities as well as securing 100% occupancy of the main site. If you would like more information or to view the rooms available please contact:

[email protected]

TO LET: The room above (Room 66) measures 538.2 square feet. With our pricing strategy, this room is available to rent for just £4,036.50 per year! that’s just £336.38 per month and includes gas and electricity costs. Further along this section of the building there is also available room 71 which is 592.02 square feet (£4,440.15 per year). We now have confirmed tenants in 35,000 square feet of space and there’s just 10,000 square feet remaining!

Breckland Cats Protection01953 681092 / 01842 754670

We have taken in some poor little cats just recently. Luckily people reported them to us and they have received prompt vet treatment. We can’t always take them in straight away as we are full most of the time but we will endeavour to get them some help until we have a space. Please look out for these cats but also remember they may just be elderly and have a loving owner so please try to establish this first.

Thelma and Louise are sisters and are loving, gentle cats who enjoy warmth, food and being tickled under the chin. They are approx. 8 years old and we would like them to be homed together as they love each other.

We have a bingo night in Brandon in the British Legion Hall on March 11th, 7.30pm.

Our Spring Fayre is March 28th in St Cuthberts Church Hall,

9.30am to 1.30pm. If you can offer a home to any of our rescue cats please contact us either by phone or our web site where you will find a link for our Facebook page.

Success for Thetford GolfClub’s Men’s Team

Thetford Golf Club's men's team began the long road to potential glory in the Mail on Sunday Golf Classic with a tremendous first round win away to local rivals Bury St Edmunds. A couple of years ago Thetford battled through eight rounds from an entry of 3,000 to reach the quarter-finals, where they lost to Wentworth. This year's quest began with a terrific tussle against Bury which went to a sudden-death play-off. Mark Henfield proved to be the man of the moment, holding his nerve to secure victory by winning the first extra hole. The match had been due to be played at Thetford, but frozen greens there meant the two captains agreed to switch the venue in order to play on normal greens at Bury. Home advantage is often crucial in these matches, and play was tight throughout. The home

team won two matches, the visitors won two - and the other match ended all square. That left the overall scores level and Henfield prevailed in a tense finale. His team-mates were Dan Traher, David Ball, Ian Farnham and Paul Pearce. Thetford team captain Kevin Cooke said: "All our team members played well and it was a great win - hopefully the first of many."

Thetford Library’s Great Big Read!

For our annual community read, where we encourage members of our local community to read and share the same books, we’ve chosen books by two local crime

authors: Elly Griffiths & Jim Kelly.

In Griffiths’ “Dying Fall”, forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway & DCI Harry Nelson probe into the suspicious death of her friend Dan Golding. Golding had made a

ground-breaking discovery before he died & something had scared him.

In “The Janus Stone”, Galloway and Nelson are called in when builders, demolishing a Victorian house in

Norwich, find the skeleton of a child –minus the skull. The house used to be a children’s home and someone

doesn’t want Galloway and Nelson to discover the truth….

Harvey Ellis is trapped in a blizzard with several other cars on the North Norfolk Coast. Several hours later

he is dead, stabbed to death in his truck. But his killer has vanished, without leaving a footprint in the snow. In Jim Kelly’s “Death Wore White”, DI Peter Shaw and DS George Valentine are called in to solve a baffling case.

The Great Big Read starts Monday 23rd March to Saturday 25th April. Why not visit Thetford Library to get your copy of the book? Then come along to the Big Read Coffee Morning in the library on Friday 17th

Acclaimed journalist and writer Anita Anand will be visiting the Ancient House Museum on Thursday 2nd April. Her internationally received biography of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh has been hugely successful with Anita making appearances on television, radio and magazines. Newspaper reviews have appeared across the world alongside Anita speaking at Jaipur, Bath & Oxford Literary Festivals. Anita has worked as a television and radio journalist for 20 years. She is presenter of Any Answers on Radio 4, is a former presenter of Drive, Doubletake and the Anita Anand Show on Radio 5 Live, and has also presented Saturday Live, The Westminster Hour, Beyond Westminster, Midweek and Woman’s Hour on Radio 4. She has presented The Daily Politics, The Sunday Politics and Newsnight on BBC television.

Anita’s first book, Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary tells the enthralling, previously untold story of a princess turned suffragette and revolutionary, who lived through some of the most eventful times in British and Indian History. In 1876 Sophia Duleep Singh was born into royalty. Her father, Maharajah Duleep Singh, was heir to the Kingdom of the Sikhs, a realm that stretched from the lush Kashmir Valley to the craggy foothills of the Khyber Pass, down as far as Sindh. It was a territory irresistible to the British, who plundered everything, including the fabled Koh-i-noor diamond. Exiled to England, the dispossessed Maharajah transformed his estate at Elveden in Suffolk into a Moghul palace, stocked with exotic animals. Sophia, god-daughter of Queen Victoria, was raised a society lady. But when, in secret defiance of the British government, she travelled to India, she returned a revolutionary – transcending her heritage to devote herself to battling injustice & inequality. Her causes were the struggle for Indian Independence, the fate of the Lascars, the welfare of

Indian soldiers in the First World War – & above all the fight for female suffrage. During the four years it took to research and write Sophia, Anita visited the museum to use the Duleep Singh archives and has included some of the museum’s images in her book.
