Cheering and Flagwaving welcomed our

boys home.Hundreds gathered and lined the streets, more headsand hands appeared from upstairs windows, someclapping, some waving flags, to create a truly fantasticwelcome, and show of appreciation, as D Squadronmarched through the town centre. Children andteenagers from local schools, many organisation, groups, and war veterans were among the crowds who were sokeen to show their gratitude.

D Squadron, from nearby RAF Honington, who recentlyfinished their tour of duty in Afghanistan arrived atMelford Common. Led by IRTR Pipes and Drums and theBand of the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, D Squadronmarched along Castle Street, across past the MarketPlace where their Group Captain Nick Bray took thesalute as they marched past and on into King Street.Official photographs were taken on the steps outsideKings House, with the public giving one last show of theirsupport, before D Squadron were greeted with a civicreception for them and their proud families, in thepicturesque Kings House garden.

What a wonderful day and opportunity for the whole ofThetford Community to say, thank you for making us soproud to be British and Welcome Home.

Many thanks must go to Thetford Town Manager, SusanGlossop and to Thetford Town Council for the organisationof this wonderful home coming parade. On the eve ofArmed Forces Day, the Welcome Home Parade gaveeveryone a chance to fully show their appreciation of thebravery and sacrifice which throughout the year areupmost in our minds.

Every opportunity is taken by many organisationsthroughout the town to support our Heroes through thecharity Help for Heroes, many of these events have beenfeatured in About Thetford and it would be impossible tolist them all. One example was the recent very wellsupported St Georges Day Concert, and another suchevent held by the Rugby Club is on page six.

Page 6: About Thetford

Thetford Rugby ClubAfter the successful Help for Heroes day held at Thetfordrugby club last year, the club wanted to make the eventeven bigger this year, by involving more local clubs. Weasked Thetford Town football club and Thetford golf clubto be part of the event and together we raised £3486.62

After pre-match photos, the game kicked off at 1200 toa good turnout at the Thetford Town. A great game wasplayed by both teams. The combined side from RAFHonington and Marham put out a good performance butlost to the better side Thetford town, final score 5-2

The rugby then kicked off at 1500 after warming upsession, and pre-match photos. The first half was playedwith Great Spirit of the event and was evenly matchedthroughout; at half time RAF team from Honington andMarham was just in the lead by 5 points. The second halfwas played very well by both sides, again very evenlymatched. The Thetford side gave everything they had, tobring back 3 points against the combined side. The finalscore was 5-3 to RAF Honington and Marham.

The Golf then tee off at 1530 at Thetford Golf club, bothteams were in great sprits before the round started, butThetford rugby clubs golf team soon found out that theywere in grave danger of a thrashing. They put everythingthey could in against the combined side but soon foundout that they were no match. Final score was 9-8 to thecombined side.

After all the games Thetford’s rugby club President, BillSmith presented the BAE system trophy and thespeeches were made, thanking everybody for theirsupport, and for why we where here raising the money. With the presentation over we started the raffle andauction this raised £730. With the support from Aircadets collecting monies on the day, Shadwell sponsoringthe rugby match, monies raised from companies and thepublic we raised a final grand total of £3486.62.

We would like to thank everybody for their supportthroughout this year’s event and we are looking to makenext years event even bigger, if you or your club wouldlike to joins us next year and think that you could takeon the combined RAF teams and help raise money forHelp for Heroes, we would like to hear from you. Pleasecontact Thetford Rugby Club.

Thank YouI would like to thank every-one who came out andsupported the homecoming parade on Friday 25th Juneof D Squadron Joint Chemical Biological and NuclearRegiment from their six month deployment in HelmandProvince it was especially pleasing to see all of the schoolchildren waving their flags.

The parade started at 11.00am from Melford Commonand was accompanied by a full marching band from theRoyal Air Force College Cranwell and the Pipes andDrums of IRTR. The air was full of pride and emotion asthe parade came into view along Castle Street on theirway to the Market Place where RAF Honington Stationcommander Group Captain Nick Bray and Lt-Col GavinThompson took the salute.

The parade continued into King Street to the sound ofloud cheering, and onto White Hart Street to fall out inWhite Hart Street car park.

Then the official photographs were taken outside King’sHouse where again the cheering and warmth for theseyoung soldiers spilled out.

The soldiers and their families were then given lunch inKing’s House gardens where they could finally relax witha beer provided by Greene King. They were overwhelmedby the warmth and emotion and hospitality shown tothem by a relatively small market town.

Finally I would like to thank the Town Council staff for theorganisation of the event and all the support agencieswho played their part. Special thanks to Greene King forsupplying the beer and the British Legion for setting upand serving it. Sure Start for providing a Nursery Nurseto man the lost children post and Routes and Roots forcarrying out an emergency pressure clean to remove spiltpaint in King Street on Friday morning.

Then onto Saturday where the Thetford branch of theRoyal British Legion organised the Armed Forces DayParade on Market Place and at twelve noon, I laid awreath on the War Memorial. Again a time to show ourgratitude to the past and present Armed Forces.

This week end has made me so proud to be Mayor ofThetford and made me realize why I love to live here.

Photographed from the Town Bridge in the early 1930s and the present day, the Haling Path is a reminder of theThetford Navigation when horse-drawn barges known as 'lighters' regularly transported all sorts of goods betweenThetford and the sea port of Kings Lynn. Today, the Haling Path is one of several attractive walks along the LittleOuse river.

Close to 1,000 people saw the performances over theweek and the feedback received has been wonderful. Many had seen the National Tour with Leslie Granthamand commented that they felt the Thetford productionwas better! It is testament to the hard work that everyone has put in and the sacrifices made.

The cast were amazing, from Frazer’s eyebrows to theKapitan’s ‘zoggy chips’ the audience were left in no doubtas to the characters on stage. As with any show, thebackstage part of the production, the costume and the

front of house are crucial. Jo Van der Hulks was in chargeof an excellent team backstage and Karen-Emma Whiteled an outstanding wardrobe crew. The Front of Housewas led by Dad’s Army Museum volunteers with teas andcoffees being provided by volunteers from the ThetfordArt Centre. We were also helped by numerous localbusinesses and so many others that we cannot possiblylist them all here – but we thank you. We couldn’t havedone it without everyone’s input and Thetford I hope hassomething else to be proud of as a result.

What a fabulous week of Dad’s Armycelebration in Thetford to mark theunveiling of the Captain Mainwaringstatue. The event kicked off in truestyle with the Walmington-on-SeaPlayers (WOSPs) and the stage play‘Dad’s Army Comes Home’. Ian Gower, famous for sitcom adaptations, directed the production and we can’tthank him enough for the amazingjob he did.

Breckland Cats ProtectionWe are having to turn away stray cats almost every dayas we are full and rehoming is very slow at the moment. Please, please have your cats micro chipped. It can bedone for about £10 at times when Jollyes or the RSPCAare having special offers, or at the vets for a little bitmore. It is well worth it if you love your cat and don’twant to lose it. The stray cat can then be scanned andthere is a possibility of reuniting it with its owner whichwould be wonderful. Unfortunately, at the moment, theyare rarely microchipped.

This is Robbie, a 1yr old neutered boy. He is a lovely, friendly cat and has been vaccinated and micro chipped.Could you offer him a home for life?

We also have some kittens which will have had their firstvaccination and be micro chipped, plus we give voucherstowards the cost of neutering when they are 5 or 6months old.

There was a widerange of suggestions from both Junior and Senior School. The children wanted more plastic bottle recycling bins, compost bins as well as even more recycling paper bins. There were several children who were interested in thebiodiversity activities – particularly bug hotels.

Following on from our ‘Switch On to Switch Off’ activity, the children wanted to see even more energy savingbulbs as well as more people remembering to turn offthe lights. More complex suggestions were to design andmake solar panels and wind turbines! All in all there area lot of ideas of what the children would like to includein the School Green Code and as a school we hope toinclude as many of them as possible over the next year.

Miss Sulley, Assistant Head of Junior School said: ‘Todaywe are inviting the students to take control of how theschool manages its carbon footprint. We have started tothink about how to improve the school’s potentialemissions, but now want the children to take theinitiative. This is a wonderful opportunity for children tolearn to care about their environment as well asexperience how individually they really can make adifference.

More than 8,000 schools are involved in the EDFEnergy’s Programme for Greener Schools which isdesigned to help schools become more sustainable. Formore information visit http://www.jointhepod.org

Half Term Heroes

Two ten year old school friends, Harry Piltchford andIsaac Hurry- Palmer, were enjoying the lovely weather ona day out with family and friends during the half termbreak. The boys had enjoyed cycling and using their dingybefore swimming in the popular river at Knettishall Heath, which was really packed due to the lovely weather. Twogroups of teenagers were splashing and diving nearHarry, who had just bombed into the water when bothHarry and Isaac saw a little girl, probably about four tofive years old go to jump in the river. They shouted’ Don’tit’s a bad idea’, but she didn’t hear.

The situation was serious as the water was exceptionallydeep, but thanks to the quick thinking of both young boysthe danger was to be averted. Harry, who was in thewater, quickly grabbed the little girl as he saw her gounder. However, he was struggling to tread water as shewas too heavy for him to support. Isaac shoutedfrantically for help. A teenage girl heard the commotion, quickly coming to Harry’s aid and together they pulledthe little girl to safety.

The little girl’s mother appeared, blissfully unaware ofjust how much danger her daughter had been in, or thatboth Harry and Isaac had been half term heroes. Boththeir Mums are, quite rightly, really proud of Harry andIsaac for their quick thinking and team work.

Bugsy a WinnerCreative Partnership is a Government initiative tobring creativity into schools. To access this fundingthere is a rigorous process and a few hoops tojump through! The process included a miniperformance of Bugsy Malone in Norwich by theschool children with Helen Jones, Laura andKayleigh Sands and Tyler Bragger taking the roles.

Queensway Community Junior School weresuccessful and were rewarded with two yearsfunding to help bring creativity to the school.

The Quicksilver Theatre Company in London havebeen the facilitators of the creativity programmesince January and thanks go to Katie Boon whohas been absolutely brilliant at co-ordinating theQuick Silver input. With more creativity to follow inthe not too distant future all that is left to say isWatch This Space!

Anyone for sausages can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQ4SqaNZMY and is the accumulativework of class 5LB. The story is about a little girl Katie who whileplaying a monkey, Mitzie Bitzie Bo, appeared and fell down theside of a mountain. Katie saved Mitzie Bitzie Bo and took himto school. Later Katie and the monkey fell in love and Katiekissed him and became a monkey! They went to the forestand made a home in a banana tree. Super Pig was looking forpeople to save when he flew into the mouth of an enormousDragon. Normally you might think this would be the end forsuper pig but 5LB had more in store for super pig before hebecame sausages. I hope you have a chance to watch theanimation on you tube link anyone for sausages.

To achieve this work 5LB divided into table groups which eachmade a character for the story boards. These were placed ona light board connected to a computer and camera. Connectionno.3 left a shadow to show where the next animation went. They had a good understanding of the process, and like thename of the animation all suggestions were democraticallychosen from.

6DE specialised in music and song writing. One story was abouta boy who went to the beach looking for Jim and then convertedto verse, each child had part of a song with a finished time of1.5 minutes. Kimberley Whur played a bright pink Clarinet.

Dianne Wood said she was proudto be on the cover ofStorytopia. When asked torecommend a really goodbit the spontaneousanswer from the childrenwas when Aliens wentto Mexico and melted. They all liked working onthe project because itfired their imaginations working oneach other’s ideas and inputs.

StorytopiaA School of Budding Authors

Following the creativity funding, the first creativityproject has now been very successfully completedwith the publishing of the Storytopia Book, whichis the published work of the whole school, makingQueensway Junior a school of budding authors.Storytopia was launched ready for the two eveningperformances of all the classes’ creative work. Oneach night one hundred and fifty parents attendedto see the two delightful animations produced bythe film makers as well as singing, dancing andacting.

About Education………………..Robert Ogden writes

It is unbelievable that we are almost at the end of anotherschool year and this one will have a particular poignancyas our two high schools prepare for closure and then tobe opened as a merged brand new Academy inSeptember. This will be the start of something reallyexciting and must be approached with optimism, ambition and hope because our young people deserveto receive the best education possible in buildings thatare fit for purpose. It might be a few short years beforethe buildings are changed completely but I am convincedthat the staff of both current schools will provide anoutstanding level of service.

September will also see another difference because forthe first time in almost 33 years there will be no memberof the Ogden family working in or attending a Thetfordschool. My wife will be retiring from Redcastle FurzeSchool this summer having previously worked in DrakeSchool and I will be leaving my post at Charles BurrellHumanities School after 32.5 years to take up the postof Vice Principal at the new Academy in King’s Lynn.

With our children having attended a range of schools inthe area, namely Raleigh, Drake, Admirals, RosemaryMusker, Charles Burrell and Methwold, and then two ofour children also having worked as either a teachingassistant or an examination invigilator for short periodsin the town, it seems like an end of an era. However, I dointend to remain as a governor at Bishop’s PrimarySchool. I would like to thank everyone for their supportover the years. It really does not feel like almost 33 yearssince I arrived at the then Staniforth School and I hopethat you can all see it as a great compliment to our townthat the Academy in King’s Lynn are keen to “import” theThetford model of doing things.

I was delighted on the 9th June to be invited by theAmbassador of Japan and the Chairman of the GreatBritain Sasakowa Foundation to a reception at theJapanese Embassy in London to celebrate 25 years ofthe foundation. This was the charity that arranged andfunded the visit to Japan in October 2008 that twelve ofour sixth formers were privileged to visit Japan. The Earlof St Andrew, the Ambassador and Mr Sasakowa all gavespeeches and it was wonderful to meet up with the teamwho organised our trip and to hear more positivecomments about our young people and how well theyhad represented our town during the visit.

Looking back I have been really fortunate to travel withour pupils and students to a range of places over theyears. Three continents, Europe, America and Asia, sixcountries, the USA, France, Belgium, Japan, Holland,Germany and I have lost count of the number of trips toLondon, Norwich, Alton Towers and other places ofinterest. Many of you will remember visits to the WorldWar One battlefields, or football matches in Belgium andHolland, some will recall our fantastic visit to New Yorkgoing up the Empire State Building, the then World TradeCentre Towers and the foggy trip around Manhattenbefore visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Thisyear’s Easter Visit to Paris epitomised everything that iswonderful about these educational visits with youngpeople acting as marvellous representatives for our town.

As we move towards the summer school holidays I amdelighted to tell you that through the Full ServiceExtended School, and particularly the partnership workingefforts of Sharni Cleverley, the FSES Family Links worker,a programme of activities will be available for our youngpeople and children. Please watch out for it as it shouldmake for a great summer.

Well, it is time for me to finish this particular monthlyreport. I shall be continuing to live in Thetford andkeeping my involvement with the Riversdale Centre andthe United Reformed Church and I will be regularly writingfor this great magazine but rather than it being AboutEducation it will morph into About Community. Onceagain thank you for all your support over the years and Iam sure that you will forgive me for using the motto ofCharles Burrell School to sum up what I personally feelabout our town and our community. “Together, we makethe difference”.

Robert G. Ogden

NHS Norfolk Chair supports Thetford Healthy Town

NHS Norfolk Chair supports Thetford Healthy Town

Sheila Childerhouse, Chair of NHS Norfolk, has spoken of her support for Thetford HealthyTown, and is urging local residents to get involved in the project. Mrs Childerhouse, who livesnear Thetford, said: "The health and wellbeing of people in Thetford was made a toppriority with the launch of 'Thetford Healthy Town'. "The aim continues to be to help localpeople adopt a healthy lifestyle, and NHS Norfolk is proud to publicise the project."

NHS Norfolk teamed up with Breckland Council and a host of other organisations to deliverthe two-year action plan under the Thetford Healthy Town banner. Mrs Childerhouseofficially launched the initiative on September 24, 2009, with Breckland Council’sExecutive Member for Communities and Benefits, Theresa Hewett.

Mrs Childerhouse, whose family have farmed in Norfolk for generations, said: "Thetford issomewhere that has lots of exciting opportunities and we are pleased that the public are

grasping them. Thetford Healthy Town is a huge opportunity to accelerate the progress we have made inimproving people's lifestyles and lives. Our main goals are to get people to take part in more physical activity, encourage healthier food choices, and tackle obesity. We aim to create an environment which promoteshealthy living, and a range of activities for people of all ages. We are delighted to work with BrecklandDistrict Council on this project, and hope that this partnership working will benefit residents around thearea."

Mrs Childerhouse is particularly keen to support 'Sustrans Bike It', an initiative which to encourages people toleave the car in the drive and cycle instead. A keen cyclist herself, she recently took part in the Ride for Lifefor the third year running, raising funds for East Anglia's Children's Hospices.

She said: "Department of Health figures show that obesity costs the NHS£1 billion a year. Still, fewer than one in five people in Norfolk are doingthe recommended 5 x 30 minutes exercise per week, and fewer than onein four people are eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

"We understand that in today's 24/7 society, it can be difficult to adopta healthy lifestyle all the time. That's why Thetford Healthy Town wascreated - to make it easier for people to become more healthy through arange of exciting activities, from gardening to dancing and boxing towalking.

"Life expectancy in Norfolk is between 78-82 years. In some parts of Thetford it is 74.7 years - and ThetfordHealthy Town aims to address that. This is a fun way to meet new people, make new friends, and do somethingenjoyable at the same time."

Green Ventures“Hi. My name is Owen and I am 10 years old. I got a nice surprise this week from mymum. My old bike was too small for me so my mum took me to the Green Ventures shopin Thetford (39 Brunel Way). I didn’t know there was such a place and couldn’t believeall the bikes they have there! The men who work there were really nice and friendly andhelped me choose a bike which was right for me. I chose a green Kawasaki. They alsoexplained to me how they got all the bikes and how they repair or fix bikes people nolonger want. Some bikes they receive are from the land fill sites and are really goodand can be used again. People also donate old bikes they no longer want.

They have bikes at the shop which look really great which you can buystraight away. My mum also bought a nice blue bike so we can go ridingtogether. I CAN’T WAIT!”

Men’s Health WeekA huge THANK YOU to Parkwood Leisure Centre and localFire Fighters from Thetford for their the time andenthusiasm when they joined us at the famous ‘yellowgazebo’ which is now a familiar site within your town. OnTuesday 15th June, during ‘Men’s Health Week’, with thesun shining down, staff from Parkwood Leisure Centrebought a rowing machine into the town centre.Unsuspecting shoppers were taken aback when a firetruck stopped outside the gazebo and 5 burly Fire Fightersgot out and took it in turns to ‘row’ to show support for theevent. Some children were also lucky enough to lookinside the fire truck and ask the fire fighters questions.

There was a serious message however, as physicallyactive men are likely to be healthier in a number of waysincluding lowering their risk of diabetes, bowel cancer, dementia and depression.

Low sugar healthysnacks for kids

We wouldn't let our kids eat sugar straight from thesugar bowl. But we tend not to think about thesugar hiding in the other things they eat and drink.Excess sugar can mean excess energy which inturn can lead to stored fat in the body and diseaseslike type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To prevent this, many families are making SugarSwaps. They're swapping food and drink with addedsugar for stuff that's lower in sugar or sugar free.

In particular, more than a quarter of the addedsugar in kids' diets comes from sugary drinks. Soswapping to water, milk (ideally semi-skimmed),sugar free drinks, sugar free squash, orunsweetened fruit juice really makes a difference.

On average, every minute of walking canextend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes. That's about a 2 for 1 trade-off!

Competition Winner

Congratulation to local resident Bernard Brooks whowon Thetford Garden Centre gift vouchers worth £50by correctly answering May’s competition aboutNorfolk RCC – community gardening project.

Bernard, who is now retired, has lived in Thetfordsince 1965 and was thrilled to win the garden centrevouchers as he is in the middle of redesigning hisgarden and said the vouchers will come in handy.Though now retired, Bernard has been an activeperson all his life and loves DIY, gardening and beingout in the fresh air. He said “Being active in bodyalso keeps the mind active. People should makeuse of what is on their doorstep”

5 a day fruit and vegEating more fruit and veg is important for us all, but how manyof us actually manage to eat 5 A DAY?Fruit and veg are packed with essential vitamins, minerals andfibre which may help reduce the risk of nasty diseases likecancer and heart disease. So it’s important for kids to eat avariety of at least five portions of fruit and veg every day.

What’s more it can be easier than you think to give kids fiveportions of fruit and veg a day. Canned, frozen, 100% juiceand dried fruit and veg all count towards 5 A DAY as well asfresh produce. You can keep the costs down too by buyingcanned and frozen fruit and veg which doesn’t go off asquickly and buying fresh fruit and veg when it’s in season isusually cheaper.

There are so many ways of getting to five portions a day. Whynot try adding vegetables to favourite foods such as spaghettibolognaise or mixing them into a sauce to give it more colourand flavour. Or, how about giving a handful of tasty raisins as a treat?

All school dinnersinclude at least twoportions of fruit or vegso that’s another way ofgetting them towardtheir 5 A DAY.

See how other familiesget their 5 A DayLisa adds a fruity surprise to Chloe’sbreakfast each day“Chloe loves cornflakes. So I just startedchopping up some fresh fruit every morning andsprinkling it on top. She looks forward to seeingwhat she's going to have every day now.”Pete and Sean wanted to make fruit salads at home“Eating fruit at home suddenly got much easierwhen we started making our own fruit salads.Sean helps me choose the ingredients, then Ichop them up and we add a bit of pure apple ororange juice and keep it in the fridge – it canlast us for about 3 days.”

Try foods more than once as it takes your

brain several times to tell if you like a food

or not, so don’t give up on your Brussels!

Thursday the 3rd of June was a beautiful sunny morningat the Bishops C of E School on the Abbey Estate. Agroup of volunteers from the Thetford Green Gym, theBTCV charity came together for a bit of a green workout. The project aim was to create 3 raised growing beds forthe school. The volunteers came to help with physicaltask of creating the raised beds and the heavy lifting andmoving of the soil. The raised beds will allow the childrento learn about growing their own food, and how to lookafter and care for the environment.

I joined them whilst they had a well deserved refreshmentbreak. All the volunteers were enthusiastic about theproject, not least the three Austin sisters, Zoe, Jade, andRebecca. Everyone was happy to be there, and feelinggood about doing something for the community. And thebonus for them was that the hard work was helping themto keep fit, whilst having fun and making friends. Theevent was organised by Jane Delaney of BTCV, Carl ClarkPastoral Outreach worker and Thetford Healthy Town.

The frames for the raised beds were kindly donated byThetford Healthy Town, and the topsoil all 20 tons of itwas donated by Darren Thorpe of the Kings Lynn Depotof British Sugar.

The BTCV Green Gym run projects all over Thetford usingvolunteer’s from all sections of the community. Their aimsare to improve both the physical and mental health of thevolunteers whilst benefiting the environment andcommunity at the same time.

Pupils take part in Food Safety Week

Food Safety Week is an annual national campaign whichfocuses on the simple precautions that consumers cantake to avoid food poisoning. This year, BrecklandCouncil’s Food and Health & Safety team worked inpartnership with the Council’s Youth Engagement teamto bring important food safety messages to primaryschool children in a way that is fun and interesting.

The sessions offered a range of interactive activities forthe children to get involved with and all pupils were givena promotional pack complete with stickers, posters anda puppet.

Pupils from Norwich Road, Thetford, GarbaldishamPrimary, Ashill Primary, Mileham Primary and SporlePrimary School were introduced to Grubeye, the starcharacter of the Food Standards Agency GermWatchcampaign, which highlights the importance of food safetyand hygiene at home. Pupils were tasked with buildingtheir own Grubeye, and the winners received aphotograph of their grubeye on a key ring.

The sessions taught the pupils how to help prevent foodpoisoning by understanding the four C’s - cooking, cleaning chilling and contamination.

Food safety and hygiene is particularly important duringthe summer months - when levels of food poisoning soar. There are around 120,000 extra cases of illnessrecorded across the UK when the weather is warmest

Hi! The weather has been a bit up and down this year, soit is really hard to know what is going to happen thismonth. Things are beginning to grow. The veg on theallotment seem to have taken time to get going, but nowwe should be having a few young carrots and lettuces. The tomatoes are getting there but very slowly, but thepeas have started to pick up at last. The potatoes havepicked up after the late frost we had in the beginning ofthe year, which set them all back.

We had our garden club summer show last month andalthough the roses are very late this year, we had a gooddisplay even though mine have taken their time to comeout. The show was great and we had more entrants thisyear than ever before for a summer show. Well doneevery one!

My lilies are only now starting to come out, but it will bebreathtaking when they do, as that heady perfume iswonderful.

Really this month we should be getting some of thatproduce that we have planted on the plate or in thevases. The birds have been busy again this year, theblackbirds are on their 3rd nest and I have seen a thrushin the garden this year for the first time since I have livedhere. We also have had a pair of gold crests on thewaterfall bathing. Then a week ago they brought theirbabies into the garden to drink. What a wonderful sightto see!

Well, keep up with the weeding and planting lettuce andradishes. Hopefully the warmer weather is round thecorner so we can enjoy the fruits of our labours. Someof the fruit is now beginning to ripen. I have been eatingthe strawberries, and black currants will soon be readyalong with the red currants.

Also look out for Mr Keith Goldsmith who from time totime has a plant sale outside St Cuthbert's church. Hewould very much like to see you all. I like to helpsometimes but being such a busy women it is not alwayspossible.

Well that's all for this month except to say happygardening and I will be back next month. If you need anyhelp or to ask anything please contact [email protected]

Gardening with Old Granddad

Hello boys and girls, I bet you are already getting excitedabout the long summer holiday starting at the end of themonth. I used to love this time of the year, it gave me thechance to do what I loved best tending my garden, whichmy dear old dad had given me, and watching the birdsnesting. I had a small plot, which was 3metres by3metres, quite small, but you can grow a lot of vegetablesin a plot that size. Mainly I kept my family supplied withsalads throughout the hot summer. It was nice to beheaped with praise by my 3 sisters and 2 brothers, whowere all older than me. Fond memories of the long hotsummers of the late nineteen fifties and early nineteensixties.

So what can you be getting on with now? Keep settinglettuce, radish and any other salad crops. Try some mixedleaves like rocket, leaf beet and harvest when young andtender. It is so simple to do. Fill a pot with compost andlevel it, then get some seeds of different leaves, mixtogether and set a small amount into the pot and lightlycover with more compost. Water and place in the sun.Keep watered and once the seeds sprout set another lot.Once the leaves are 60 cm tall they are ready, snip offthe leaves and wash and drain toss in a bowl, mix in othersalad items and enjoy.

I want to thank all those people who came round andenjoyed our garden on Sunday 13th June. Meeting somany gardeners and sharing our thoughts wasgreat, and it was also nice to hear so many ofyou are growing vegetables in pots and thesewere not younggardeners. Wellthat's it for nowhope you all keepsafe and well, bye fornow. Bye for now.

Before I go, I opened my garden to the public for opengardens last month and had a really lovely day and wouldlike to thank those who came to look at our garden andgave me some really nice comments. It was also reallynice to see our mayor Pauline Quadling, even if shecaught me cleaning the pump out in the pond! Thank youagain.

Members of the 3rd Thetford Scout Group’s Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Iceni Explorer Scout Unit at their recent AGM.

Once in a Lifetime Opportunity3rd Thetford Scout Group had a lot to celebrate at theirrecent AGM and Badge Night. During the evening theBeavers, Cubs and Scouts (ranging from 6 – 14 yearsold) invested new members in all sections, taking theirnumbers (including adult leaders) to a record 100+.New members also joined the Iceni Explorer Scout Unit(14 – 18 year olds) and a host of awards and badgeswere presented during the evening.

Mike Dixon, representing the South West Norfolk ScoutDistrict at the meeting, said “the reason this group is sosuccessful is because they have fun!”

Scouter-in-Charge, Stephen Hunt, was pleased to tell thepacked audience of members and their families aboutthe training for various activities that adults and youngleaders have undertaken over the last year. He said “withcertificates to lead rock climbing, abseiling, archery, shooting and narrow boating the 3rd Thetford leadershipteam are probably the best qualified in the county!”

Stephen Hunt was also proud to announce that a 24 yearlong project, started when he was with the 1st AylesburyScout Group, has also come to fruition - the narrow boat“Harboro Adventure II” is now berthed at its mooring onthe River Ouse. The boat, originally a 1936 brickies’boat, has been stripped and re-built by numerous Scoutsand helpers from both Aylesbury and Thetford since itsacquisition in 1986. Space to work on the 48 foot longnarrow boat was kindly provided by the Elveden Estate, the Norfolk Rural Community Council helped with a grant

for essential equipment to complete the work andBreckland District Youth Council Fund helped to pay forleaders to undertake RYA helmsman training. Some finalminor works are being completed and an official openingis being planned and will be announced soon.

Like its namesake ”Harboro Rocks”, the Derbyshirefarmhouse run by 3rd Thetford and used by a number ofgroups, “Harboro Adventure II” is set to provide outdooradventure and training opportunities for local Scouts andGuides for many years to come. Members of the groupare now wondering what project they can turn theirhands to to provide Harboro Adventure III!

Talking of adventure, two of Thetford’s Iceni ExplorerScout Unit told the meeting about how they were selectedfrom 70 Norfolk Explorer Scouts to be members of the36-strong Norfolk contingent going to the World ScoutJamboree in Sweden next year. Rachael Davis andMatthew Tippett thanked those who had supported theirrecent fund raising efforts “walking to Sweden” three-legged whilst dressed in Swedish costume! During thenext two months bag packing in Sainsbury’s and Tescois also being organised by the pair who each need to find£2000 to fund their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Mike Dixon was absolutely right when he said Scouts inThetford have fun!

Thetford Academya student’s view

My name is Joshua Caitens-Smith and I currently go toRosemary Musker High School which, at the end of thesummer holidays, will be Renamed “North Campus” inlight of the new academy.

There have been mixed views about the academy fromstudents as well as teachers, one of the main worries ofthe proposal, is if the students currently attendingRosemary Musker High School and Charles BurrellHumanities School will have a place in the new academy. The answer to that is yes, all students who are at eitherschool will not have to re-apply to get a place in theacademy.

Some of the students at both schools have their ownviews on the academy and one of them is from a studentin the current year ten of Rosemary Musker. “I don’t reallysee how the schools becoming an academy will affectme, because I’m not going to be in school that muchlonger so what is the point?”. In my opinion “the point”of the new academy is to make Thetford a better learningenvironment for future students who may choose to studyhere.

The academy will be receiving more funding, which inturn will be in the interests of the students as it willprovide better facilities for them, this could include newgyms at the North and South campuses; more schooltrips which would be beneficial to the students learningas it is a more “hands on” approach to learning than ina classroom; A new uniform, which will be free of chargeto the students, will be issued. This includes a blazer withthe new academy logo, school ties, and school jumpers.A new P.E. kit will also be issued for free and this consistsof a polo shirt, a rugby top and socks, all in the coloursof the new academy.

The academy will be split up into three differentcampuses, the North Campus, the South Campus andthe Forum. Each campus will specialise in different areas. One will be leading on the Arts and Literacy; one onScience, Maths and Technology; while the third (theForum site) will be focused on Vocational and Hands-onlearning. Some students have wondered whether theywill be able to easily get from one campus to another butthis has been solved as part of the funding will be goingtowards transport for the students which will involve bus

runs and safe bike and walking routes to and from thecampuses.

All in all I think that the new academy is a good idea forthe current students as they will see some immediatechanges to their school life and to the future pupils asthey will have a much better system of education withless social boundaries as the two Thetford schools willbe merged together. Joshua Caitens-Smith

Thetford OpenGardens

It was another lovely day for the fourth ThetfordOpen Gardens. 38 gardens were on view to thepublic ranging from the small, neat and compact, many of which had ponds, to the much largergardens, which sweep down to the river. 12gardens, which had not previously been open wereon show this year. This makes the day additionallyattractive to those who have visited in previousyears and it is very gratifying that so many peoplein Thetford are wanting to become involved in a daywhich brings the town together in support of StNicholas Hospice.

Visitors are constantly surprised and impressed bythe beauty and interesting features provided by ourtown. On the day, there was something for everyoneinterested in gardens and plants, and the hostswere only too happy to help with information andstories of how their gardens began and evolved.Lunches and teas were available and many stoppedin beautiful surroundings to partake.

The Probus Club also held a luncheon at Mike andJune Lewis' and they have donated the profits tothe Open Gardens for St Nicholas Hospice.

Very grateful thanks go to all those who participatedin any way at all to make the day such a success. To date, the sum raised for the Hospice is£4886.03, which is fantastic.

Laburnum Grove Caribbean Carnival andFootball Extravaganza

On Wed June 16th Laburnum Grove Housing with CareScheme held their annual Extravaganza to help raisefunds to finance activities and outings for their clients. This year manager Pearl Mumford, and her activitiesteam arranged a Caribbean Carnival, and with the worldcup football upmost in minds decided to add a footballtheme to the carnival too!

The event was opened by Deputy Mayor Cllr. PamSpenser and the festivities began with a display of LimboDancing from Amber, in the car park at the front of thebuilding. It wasn’t long before she had the clients andguests clapping along to the music and even managedto get several volunteers to dance under the limbo bar!Amber originally from the tropical island of St. Lucia inthe Caribbean travelled up from London to entertain us.

Next up was an aptly named display, Juggling Inferno, byTim Marston. His enthralling performance justified hisvery descriptive name, juggling up to three flamingbrands, displaying his skills with fire eating before finallybreathing fire just like the mythical dragons. Tim, whonormally entertains at weddings, is based in Kendal inthe beautiful Lake District and drove all the way toThetford to be part of this really enjoyable day.

Then, when everyone had moved inside the main eventof the day followed, the carnival procession weavedthrough the main lounge led by the carnival king,(Grandad) David Friend and queen Evelyn Ollington, tothe accompaniment of familiar Caribbean music the steeldrums, played by Octavius.

A delicious lunch was then served to the clients andguests, approximately one hundred people, by the staffand volunteers who were brightly dressed in eitherCaribbean or football related costumes. A specially bakedcarnival cake was cut by June Kenward and Karen knightfrom Social Services, and a welcome song sung by PeterKenward who volunteered to be the MC for the day.Another cake especially baked for the day was auctionedoff to add to the amenity fund.

Sally Meets Sharon in a Chance Meeting at

SainsburysSally Foster, who lives in Suffolk, popped into Sainsburyson her way home from work in London, where by chanceSharon was collecting money for a very new branch ofthe St John’s Ambulance here in Thetford. Coincidently,Sally had been with the St Johns for fifteen years whileliving in Surrey and had given this up due to the pressureof her daily commute.

Sally and Sharon started chatting, and Sally said shewould like to help as she popped some coins in thebucket. Many thanks went to Lloyds and Sally whois hoping to find the time to join the fundraisingcommittee. Sally has links to the town through relativeshere.

Sharon was literally over the moon as the group startedfrom scratch last September, and this will help towardsthe cost of much needed uniforms, radios, stationery etc.

The group collect plastic bottles and aluminium cans. These may be dropped off at Select in Town or to Sharonat 1 Hillary Road. Please ring 07940 029 510 if you havea large quantity for collection.

Residents will feel SaferBreckland Council’s Pride in Breckland team will beinstalling a gate to stop people using an alleyway as apublic convenience and causing criminal damage.

The alleyway which links King Street with the rear of WellStreet in Thetford has been regularly used by groups ofpeople who cause problems for local shopkeepers.

But the new gate will put a stop to the problems andmake residents and traders feel safer.

The gates will block both ends of the alleyway preventingpedestrians from using the alleyway between the hoursof 18:30 and 07:30 with only shopkeepers, the policeand fire crews having a key to it.

The gate was decided upon after concerns were raisedby the Thetford Task Force, the Police and a localresidents association.

Richard Wills, Pride in Breckland Co-ordinator said: ThePride in Breckland team had a discussion and came upwith some ideas and then worked with local shopkeepersto find a way of getting a gate put in."

The alleyway gate is funded by Pride in Breckland and will be installed by July.
