First Steps Back to Our Homelands
Dock Installation at Giga’ak
Back in February the idea of putting in docks at
Ba’as and Takush was presented as the first
step in returning to the Homelands. Refurbished
docks were available in Campbell River from DK
Industries and discussions showed that
substantial savings could be obtained if both
docks were done at the same time.
Camping gear, food, and tools for 12 people was
purchased by the Treaty Office with funding
coming from a Treaty Related Measure. This
federal grant money is separate from treaty
funding. It is available only because we are in
the treaty process – and it doesn't need to be
repaid.
It was decided to instalL at Giga’ak first, so that
it would be available for the Canoe Journey.

Treaty Update (continued from front page)
Dock Installation at Giga’ak
Wade Charlie was hired to help prepare for
the installation and lead the crew of
volunteers who were:
Blanche Walkus Clyde Walkus
Carol Walkus Walter George
Thelma George Kelly Anderson
David George Eli Charlie
Moses Walkus Solomon Munn
BLESSING CEREMONY: Gwa’sala Elders and
Chiefs requested a blessing ceremony be held
prior to the dock installation to mark this
important milestone in our return to the
homeland, as well as to heal some of the hurt
from our removal. The Naiad took a mix of
Elders, Chiefs, and youth to Giga’ak on the
2nd.. For some it was their first time back
since being taken away. The ceremony was
very powerful.
Shortly after, our water taxi arrived with the
crew of volunteers eager to help prepare for
the dock installation. It was great that the
youth were able to come and be part of the
ceremony and see and learn about this
extraordinary place. They will be able to tell
future generations living in Giga’ak that
they were there the day the first steps were
taken to return to our homelands.
Our crew of volunteers started the laborious
process of carrying all the food and gear 10
metres up the bank from the landing to the
top of the village site. Areas were cleared,
tents were raised, and with a food
preparation area set up with our new three-
burner cook stove a nourishing dinner was
prepared for 12 hungry campers!
DOCK LOCATION: The next day more of the
village site was cleared and potential dock
locations were studied. Everyone kept an eye
out for the barge with the dock and materials
for a covered cooking/eating building, tent
platforms and outhouses. But the barge
didn’t arrive and we weren’t able to contact
anyone in Tsulquate to find out why. So the
next day a number of crew left for home, but
as they were leaving the barge arrived! The
group was happy to welcome the barge crew
onto the site and at high tide the building
materials were offloaded. Over the next few
days building materials were packed by hand
up the steep slope by our dedicated (and
strong!) crew.
The best location for the dock was where the
old school dock used to be, about 100 metres
from the village. But the area where the dock
ramp would go ashore was found to be too
uneven and heavy equipment was needed to
prepare it. Also, the old trail was in rough
shape and would take a lot of work to make
it useable for an all terrain vehicle. The barge
crew advised that the only suitable location
that could be prepared with the materials
and equipment available was on the
southeast side of Boone Island. The island is
only accessible for about half of the tide so a
causeway to the village will be built.
PAGE 4 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 07/11/2014
Our crew got the landing site leveled, ready
for the next high tide when the barge could
get in close enough to lift the heavy 10 foot X
16 ft. landing in place. The landing needs to
be well placed because the ramp is bolted to
it.
While the barge crew offloaded the floats into
the water and placed the anchors, our crew
was back preparing the camp site. The 16 ft.
X 16 ft. cooking/eating building was the
highest priority so we started on that.
The barge crew were very experienced. By
Day 2 they had the landing installed, the
floats anchored and bolted together, and the
ramp bolted to the landing.
Before they left, we asked the barge crew if
they could use their crane to lift the building
materials up onto the village site. In no time
they'd rigged a block onto a cedar and
winched up about 10 loads. Everyone was
happy not carrying these sheets of plywood
up the hill!
The crew left late on the 7th so we could be
home for the canoe journey. The spirit house
crew was still hard at it when we left.
In August when the survey crew is staying at
Giga’ak the landing site for the ramp will be
further stabilized with concrete. We'll put a
roof on the cooking/eating house and shingle
it, build at least two tent platforms, dig and
build an outhouse, and build the causeway to
Boone Island.
The dock for Ba’as was delayed because of
weather and is now scheduled for the end of
July. We hope that everyone has an exciting
time!

Colleen Hemphill
Chief Negotiator

I hope everyone has been enjoying the weather and
the company of the Canoe Journey folks.
What a great pleasure it was to have visitors in our
community.

August 1st at 8am and will return Tuesday August
5th in the evening sometime. We only have room
for 30 elders on this trip.
These are who I have signed up:

Terry
Clara
Lily
Vivian
Janet
Mable

We have room for 13 more to sign up. I need those
that wish to come to contact me directly. If you
wish to come you also need to help with the next
catering jobs coming up.
Catering jobs are:
July 17 & 18 starting at 10am both days
July 24 & 25 starting at 10am both days
If you can not get up to the Elder's Center on these
days, then you MUST send another helper on your
behalf. Be sure they state who they are volunteering
for.
I would like to thank all my helpers that helped all
through the night on Tuesday cooking for the Canoe
hosting up in Takush. It is unfortunate they didn't
end up going there. We were here from 10pm-8am
cooking to make sure there was food to be sent up
on the boat the next morning. The weather was
against us all. Kristen Walkus, Adam, Granny Mary
Johnson, Dodie, Eileen, Mable & Richard. If it
wasn't for all of you, I don't know what we would
have done. Thank you very much from the Elders.
Please remember to come and lend your helping and
with the cater jobs next week!
Elder's fun Days have been continuing and going
very well. We will be going on a fishing trip very
soon! So make sure you start attending in order to
be able to come along, ok? :)
Lastly, we send our sincere condolences to granny
Lil and family on the loss of Al. Love and prayers
for you all ♡
Have a great weekend everyone

it and/or that you don’t accidently miss that you
are on the list (List is located at the Band Office).

name and number to 250-949-0144 or leave your
number at the front at the Band Office.
Thanks for everyone’s cooperation – Let’s keep
this program going strong!
---------Reminder----------
Hello everyone,
Yes, it is that time again; the Good Food Bag has
arrived!
This week we’ll focus on using up those
vegetables that may be lingering in the fridge
and healthy choices for salad dressings.
One of the best ways I’ve been able to create a
dinner that is quick and packed full of nutritious
ingredients is to make a stir-fry. Stir-fries’ are
amazing because you can make it with whatever
vegetables you want (or have) and it will
typically come out tasting pretty great.
Hope you enjoy! Remember I am always open for
feedback and would love to hear from you
Michelle,
Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator
phone (txt): 250-949-0144
Main Dish: Beef Stir-fry
A stir-fry for dinner can be beneficial in many
ways; it’s a quick meal, healthy in that it is made
from whole foods and fun to make
The benefit we get from whole foods is the whole
part of the food, it hasn’t been broken down
(refined) into something less or separate parts, it
contains all it’s nutrients.
Pair it with brown rice (or quinoa) instead of
white rice (which is refined).
Ingredients for the stir-fry:
1 yam, chopped very small
1 green pepper, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
6-8 mushrooms, chopped
1 cup bean sprouts
Add any other vegetable (broccoli, peas,
corn, carrots, zucchini, onions etc).
1 tbsp olive oil (substitute: 1 tbsp grape
seed oil or coconut oil)
Beef, cooked and thinly sliced.
1-2 cloves Garlic, chopped
1 inch piece of fresh ginger chopped finely
or grated.
PAGE 7 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 07/11/2014
1 cup brown rice (Cook with 2 cups water)
Ingredients for the stir-fry sauce:
3/4 cup orange juice
1 Tbsp Cornstarch
2 Tbsp low salt soya sauce (or Hoisin
sauce)
1 Tbsp Oyster sauce
1 Tbsp Rice vinegar
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp Finely grated orange zest (use the
fine side of the cheese grater to get the
zest/skin from the orange into fine pieces).
To prepare:
1. Cut the beef into small strips and cook.
2. Put the rice on to cook.
3. Mix all ingredients for the sauce together
in a bowl and set aside.
4. Cut the vegetables into bite size pieces.
Leave the bean sprouts out until the stir-
fry is almost done cooking. Cut the yams
smaller or else they won’t cook through.
5. Add olive oil, garlic, ginger and vegetables
to pan and cook on medium until
vegetables are almost done.
6. Add sauce and bean sprouts to the
vegetables. Stir frequently until
vegetables are cooked.
7. Serve over rice.
Side Dish: Citrus Beet Salad
The nice thing about a salad is that is usually
complements any dish. You can make this a full
meal by topping the salad with meat like chicken
or fish.
There are many benefits to making your own
salad dressing such as it contains much less
preservatives, no artificial flavors and oils that
are healthier choices. This helps you to increase
the nutritional benefits of the foods you eat.
Try making the homemade salad dressing and
see how simple ingredients can make amazing
flavors.
Ingredients for the salad:
1-2 medium size beets cooked and
sliced.
½ red onion, thinly sliced
¼ cup pumpkin seeds
Lettuce
Crumbled cheese (goat, feta, parmesan)
1-2 oranges peeled and broken apart.
Ingredients for the dressing:
2 tbsp orange juice
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp brown sugar or 1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
To prepare:
1. Wash beets and cook until soft, let cool
and cut into bite size pieces
2. Mix the ingredients for the salad dressing
into a small bowl, set aside.
3. Place lettuce in a large bowl and top with
onions, oranges, seeds and cheese.
4. Drizzle with citrus vinaigrette dressing.

Healthy Snack: Celery Bites
Lets create a healthy snack that’s good on the
run, can be packed for picnics or to have at home.
Celery is a good snack when filled with healthy
options such as peanut butter, nut butters or
hummus, which adds protein to the meal. Kids
love it because it’s like a mini boat with a crunch!
Ingredients:
Celery, cut into long pieces
Peanut butter, nut butter or hummus
Raisins, currants, blueberries or
cranberries (optional).
To prepare:
1. Wash celery and cut into long pieces.
2. Spread peanut butter, nut butter or
hummus into the center.
3. Sprinkle raisins, currants or dried berries
on top.
4. Bite into the crunchy snack and enjoy!
Wild Flower Tea
I wanted to share something that I enjoy both
when I am at home and out on the west coast
camping. Sipping on a wild flower tea seems to
make the world of difference with how I feel,
picking me up when I am sick, soothing when a
need to relax or providing energy when I am
down. No matter how I feel, I can’t help but
smile when I take my first sip of the tea.
~Things to remember~
1. Always know your plants! Picking the
wrong plant that is not edible is never
worth it. Some plants are poisonous and
can make you very sick or worse could
cause death. If anyone is interested I am
willing to teach people
2. Choose your locations to pick the plants.
Pick in areas free of pollutants and off
areas where people walk their dogs to
avoid dog pee.
3. Pick only what you need. Make sure to
not pick everything in sight, leave some
for other people and the animals that
depend on the plants.
PAGE 9 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 07/11/2014
4. Collecting and storing so the plants won’t
go bad before you get home. Collect
plants that are dry, not wet from the
morning dew or rain. Collect in a
breathable bag or basket so if it’s hot out
they won’t wilt as fast. If you would like
to save the flowers for later, hang to dry
in a cool dark spot or use right away.
~Examples of Plants that are great in
a tea~
Each plant has different nutritional and
medicinal properties, try combinations that
complement each other medicinally and/or make
up your own flavor. There are lots of plants that
can make a beneficial tea but here are a few to
get you started.
Berries (salmonberry, huckleberry,
blackberry, currants, thimbleberry,
blueberry etc).
Red Clover (flower and leaves)
Wild Rose (flowers, leaves, hips)
Yarrow (flowers and leaves)
Labrador Tea (leaves)
Wild Mint (flowers and leaves)
Licorice Fern (root)
Fireweed (flowers and leaves)
~How do I make a Wild Flower Tea~
It’s easy and rewarding! Collect the plants, place
in water, heat to a simmer (never boil), let steep
for 10-20 minutes. Poor in your favorite cup and
savor the experience.
If anyone has a favorite wild flower tea or other
knowledge they would like to share with me,
please send me an email, call, or come find me at
the Band Office/Community Garden.
--Have fun! Michelle
