DOG OWNERS Chief and Council are asking the owners of dogs
to please have them tied up or keep them in your
house, there has been an ongoing stressful
problem with the dog population that is not only
effecting our own community member’s but also
workers of our community such as the school, the
principal is concerned for our children and the
actions the dogs have taken, he is concerned of
the lunches been taken, and vicious dog fights
that kids shouldn’t be seeing.
Stray dogs are attacking members of our
community and do not seem scared at all of
anyone.
Council will instruct Les to hire someone to rid of
problem dogs; unless this conduct is not followed
council has no choice but to terminate the
problem dogs immediately.

GUARDIAN
WATCHMEN UP DATE
Hello everybody, it has been such a nice and busy
summer. Just a short update on the guardian
watchmen program, we currently are starting
the elders outreach part of the program where we
will be taking elders back out to the homelands
to listen and learn from them. Taking notes and
pictures for everybody to see.
We are hoping with first hand knowledge from
our own elders we can do a better job of
protecting and monitoring the parts in our
homeland which we are all connected to. so keep
your fingers crossed this beautiful weather holds
off for just a little while longer.
We have also been lucky enough to go and spend
a night in Burnett bay. For those of you who
don't know about Burnett bay, its a huge sandy
beach right in the middle of our territory. Its
among the 5 locations in our homelands where
we have started our tsunami debris monitoring
program.
Believe it or not we have found our first piece of
garbage that we believe could be from the
tsunami. It was a blue bottle of hairspray. We
also walked the whole beach with garbage bags
and in the hot sun picking up garbage from our
most beautiful beach trying to keep it clean. We
look forward to doing more community outreach
programs with the band to let everybody have a
chance to go home for a day keep your eyes on
the newsletter for when opportunity's come up.
Have a great school year!!
THANKS,
GNN GUARDIAN WATCHMEN

TREATY UPDATE
Yo community! It sure has been an amazing
September so far with all the nice sun and
warmth for the children (and adults!) to be able
to continue to have fun outside.
In the early August issue I announced a treaty
meeting to update community members on
activities undertaken by your treaty office.
September 17 was decided as the meeting day.
However, I have been asked to postpone this
session due to the Reconciliation Week that is
happening in Vancouver from September 16 – 22.
The Reconciliation Week is tied in with the Truth
and Reconciliation Process that is bringing our
peoples ‘residential school experiences to light so
that there is more of a shared understanding
between us and the rest of Canada leading
toward a stronger community. ( please check this
out on the web @: http://reconciliationcanada.ca)
At this time I am looking toward another date
that could work in early October. I apologize for
this change; however, I do feel it is important to
respect the request that was made to me.
Two items that I wish to discuss at this time: The
Deserters Island project and the Elder Center.
The Deserters Island Project
This project wound up at the end of August. The
purpose was to make the Cabin more accessible
for use by community members by adjustment of
the docks, stair repair, cabin clean-up, basic
cabin renos to cooking area and sleep areas;
brush clearing and construction of outside toilet
facilities. Working with an agreed upon work
plan, the Supervisor, Chief Tom Henderson with
the help of his wife Linda and a group of four
youth, carried out the tasks as provided. About 8
youth between ages of 14-16 participated and
Jamie King assisted as watchman and assistant
for heavy lifting and construction. The project
was a great opportunity to give youth experience
and employment in the territories. The crew met
and overcame various challenges. A presentation
of the project and outcomes will be made at the
upcoming treaty meeting. I am very proud of all
the crew for taking this challenging project on,
and look forward to lessons learned as we plan
future similar efforts to give youth opportunity to
live and work in the homelands. Gilakas’la.
Elders Center Coordinator
At this time the Elder Coordinator position is
vacant. Janine Sheard has taken a position at
another place and we wish her all the best. We
are in dialogue with Silena George to determine
a start date, the agreed upon one so far is
November 4, 2013. In the interim, the Elder
Center is getting worked on in preparation for
Elder use/meetings and other agreed upon
rentals and activities that will occur. Linda
Henderson, who is the Treaty Administrative
Assistant working out of the Elders Center, will
insure availability of rentals/key when requested.
Please contact Linda or I at the Band Office with
questions or concerns you may have. Gilakas’la.
Thank you for reading this update I look forward
to seeing you at the upcoming Treaty meeting in
early October.
Gilaka’sla.
