YO WIKSAS!

I hope you all are keeping warm in this cool wet weather! Time to light the wood stove for sure.

A lot of the Elder's activities have been held back due to other activities, functions or deaths in the community.

Office closures are out of the staff's hands on any part.

We may change Elders Fun Day! Stay tuned for further information.

The elders will be having their Halloween party on Friday October 31st @ 12pm

Please let me know if anyone is able to help with decorating, cooking, etc.

We have touched base with Fort Rupert & Quatsino representatives in regards to a Tri Band Elder's luncheon.

Further details will be discussed in the next little while.

Thanksgiving day Monday October 13. So that means, no Elder's Day.

We will be starting the healing circle with Dean & Victor on Tuesday starting at 10am-12pm with a light snack.

Wednesday October 15th we will have a Thanksgiving lunch starting at 12pm here foloowed by some fun &

games.

I will be away with Granny Sara on Monday October 20 & Tuesday October 21 for her appointment. I have

contacted Chelsey and Michelle or Liz to lend a helping hand cooking that Monday for Elder's Day.

Please participate as much as you can in any activities we have here. I am really trying my best to getting more

activities going for you. But we can not have a successful program if nobody has been attending.

I hope you all have a great weekend ♡

I will be running in my very first half marathon in Victoria! Wish me luck :)

YO! JOB TRAINING AD

GIS Technician Training, Natural Resources Dept., BAND OFFICE

Wage: $12/hr to start

Deadline to Apply: October 22nd, 2014

Details: 35 hrs/week, one-year term. Training will be provided on a one-on-one basis to an individual

interested in learning Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data management. Erin

Latham, a GIS instructor from the geography department at the University of Victoria, will be mentoring

a Band member in building the skills necessary to support staff in the Natural Resources office and

elsewhere in spatial data management, map-making, and information queries. We will be using

specialized software and other data programs like Google Earth to learn the web-based world of maps and

spatial data information. Applicants must have an interest in geography, maps and spatial data. Other

interests may include navigation, GPS, and satellite imagery.

Experience: Requires experience in PC computers and basic Windows software programs and commands

(eg. Opening and closing windows, cut/copy/paste, etc). Key assets include ability to trouble-shoot

computer problems and a working knowledge of spreadsheets, but we are willing to train the right person

with the right attitude.

How to Apply: Submit resume and cover letter to Band office (ATTN to: Erin Latham). Applicants will be

contacted for interviews.

Introduction to Erin

Hi everyone!

My name is Erin Latham and I have just started in the Natural Resources department at the Band office!

I’m a PhD candidate from the Geography department at the University of Victoria. My research involves

learning about aquaculture and the various influences that effect its development, and how these effect

First Nation’s opportunities to engage both in the industry and its management institutions. Quite a

mouthful, I know! The research goals harmonize well with the research goals of the community, and the

GNN has outlined specific community-based objectives and outcomes that will involve us talking to

community members and other local people about aquaculture. I am fortunate to bring my own research

funding, and so you might consider me as an ‘unofficial’ Staff Member at the Band office.

Also while I’m here, and when I’m not reading about aquaculture or discussing aquaculture, I will be

providing staff support to the Natural Resources department primarily through my geographic

information systems (GIS) skills. I will be developing a GIS mentoring program specifically for the GNN

which I consider to be more fun than work! I’m looking forward to working with community members of

all ages and finding opportunities to teach and learn about the exciting world of GIS and maps!

I want to thank you all for welcoming me into your community and how grateful I am be working here. I

look forward to meeting everyone! I am in the Natural Resource office. Feel free to drop by anytime! Or

you can reach me by email or phone: [email protected], and (250) 949-2310.
