WFG  Continental  Cup  –  Penticton,  2013

1

Well  it’s  summertime  and  the  living  is  easy…  but  not  for  everyone!  Behind  the  scenes  an  enthusiastic,  dedicated  group  of  volunteers  are  painting  the  town,  setting  up  displays  at  events,  handing  out  brochures  at  the  Farmers  Market  and  helping  out  at  the  World  Financial  Group  Continental  Cup  office.

Since  the  last  newsletter  we  had  a  number  of  people  come  forward  to  volunteer  and  are  almost  at  our  target  of  250  volunteers.

With  the  scent  of  curling  season  “in  the  air”  we  expect  that  all  volunteer  positions  will  be  filled  in  the  next  couple  of  weeks.    We  also  expect  interest  in  ticket  packages  to  increase  over  the  next  few  months,  especially  with  the  launch  of  new  ticket  packages  for  fans  to  purchase.

We  have  a  new  sponsor  –  please  join  me  in  welcoming  Prospera  Credit  Union,  who  has  generously  become  the  Volunteer  Sponsor  for  the  2013  World  Financial  Group  Continental  Cup.

2

The  Count  Down  is  on.  Only  4  plus  months  left  before  Penticton  will  host  “THE  LARGEST  INTERNATIONAL  CURLING  EVENT”  in  its  history,  and  all  of  you  will  play  a  part.  With  incredible  people  like  you  –  all  working  towards  a  common  goal,  it  is  sure  to  be  a  successful  event  and  not  one  you  will  soon  forget.

Three  cheers  for  the  Volunteers!

Volunteer  of  the  Month

Sue  Chaudry  Sue  Chaudry  has  dedicated  several  Saturdays  to  hosting  the  WFG  Continental  Cup  Booth  at  Penticton’s  Downtown  Market  alongside  her  husband  Navid.  Sue  doesn’t  just  sit  behind  the  booth  –  she  can  be  found  corralling  people  as  they  walk  by,  and  making  absolutely  certain  they  know  about  the  biggest  curling  event  –  ever  to  come  to  Penticton.  She  has  proven  herself  a  marvelous  asset  to  our  Promotions  Team,  and  her  husband  is  pretty  awesome  too.

Although  Sue  has  not  curled  before  (well,  except  her  hair),  she  got  involved  after  her  husband  came  home  from  a  Rotary  Lunch  where  Kim  Kirkham  and  December  Foster  had  spoken,  and  both  decided  to  sign  up!    She  has  enjoyed  her  experience  so  far,  and  looks  forward  to  learning  more  about  the  sport  of  curling  as  well  as  meeting  all  the  athletes,  volunteers  and  visitors.    She  is  also  quite  thrilled  about  four  full  days  of  letting  her  housework  go!

Navid  &  Sue  live  in  OK  Falls  and  have  three  children  who  all  live  in  Kelowna.      Sue  works  as  a  Behaviour  Assistant  for  the  Autism  Services  Dept.  at  the  OSNS  Child  Development  Center  in  Penticton.

Kim  Kirkham  Host  Committee  Chairperson

Kim  Kirkham  is  chair  of  the  Host  Committee  of  the  2013  WFG  Continental  Cup.  She  is  employed  by  the  City  of  Penticton  with  more  than  25  years  of  her  career  in  banking.

Kim  has  only  been  curling  about  13  years  –  which  in  most  curling  clubs  would  be  considered  a  “newbie”.  She  was  introduced  to  curling  in  the  Summerland  Bushspiel  by  friends  and  after  a  weekend  of  curling  was  hooked.  One  of  the  great  aspects  of  curling  is  that  you  can  start  at  any  age.

The  Penticton  Curling  Club,  like  most  clubs,  needed  volunteers  in  many  areas,  including  the  Board  of  Directors.  Kim  became  a  director  on  the  board  in  2006  and  is  currently  the  Past-‐President  having  served  as  President  for  three  years.  Kim  has  included  positions  as  the  Vice  President  of  the  2008  Men’s  Provincials  and  Co-‐Chair  of  the  2010  Women’s  Provincials  on  her  volunteer  resume.

Kim  has  been  awarded  the  “Volunteer  of  the  Year”  for  the  Penticton  Curling  Club  three  times.  In  2010  being  awarded  the  “Provincial  Volunteer  of  the  Year”  by  Curl  BC.

Kim  gravitates  to  the  marketing  and  social  media  components  of  events  when  volunteering.  She  is  proud  of  the  Penticton  Curling  Club’s  website,  Facebook  page  and  her  bi-‐weekly  curling  column  in  the  Penticton  Western  News.  Her  column  covers  some  of  the  “Happenings  Around  the  Club”,  as  well  as,  featuring  members  of  the  club.  She  initially  thought,  “who  will  read  a  curling  column?”  and  is  always  amazed  by  the  number  of  readers  –  both  curlers  and  non-‐curlers  –  that  read  her  column.

Kim  was  recently  asked  why  she  volunteers.  “It’s  pretty  simple.    I  love  to  help  and  it  always  feels  good  to  give  back,”  said  Kim.

Success  is  always  in  the  pairings.    Great  Chair  –  Great  Event!

December  is  a  born-‐and-‐raised  Pentictonite  but  got  “the  heck  outta  Dodge”  as  soon  as  she  was  old  enough.    She  spent  several  years  travelling  and  living  throughout  Western  Canada,  the  United  States  and  Europe  before  finally  settling  down  in  Victoria  where  she  was  lead  singer  of  the  band  PURRr  for  about  4  years.    After  about  13  years  living  away  from  Penticton,  she  felt  the  call  to  come  home  for  good,  and  has  no  plans  to  move  away  again  ever.      December  began  her  career  in  marketing  quite  by  accident  in  1998  when  she  went  to  work  for  a  Victoria  marketing  firm  called  CMN.    She  quickly  realized  that  Marketing  and  Design  were  passions,  so  she  took  some  business  and  web  design  courses  starting  her  own  unique  and  successful  restaurant  advertising  business.    Since  then  she  has  managed  marketing  and  events  for  the  Barley  Mill  Pub  in  Penticton,  managed  Penticton’s  only  live  theatre  –  Okanagan  Stage,  and  owned  and  operated  a  marketing  &  print  design  business  called  Miss  Print  Marketing,  also  based  in  Penticton.  In  her  “spare”  time,  December  runs  after  her  two  part-‐time  step-‐children  Marysa  (5)  and  Josh  (3),  spends  time  with  her  devastatingly  handsome  fiancé  Paul,  cleans  litter  boxes  for  her  13  cats,  and  sweeps  up  dog  hair  from  her  five  large  dogs.    In  her  “SPARE  spare”  time  she  operates  a  non-‐profit  Kitten  Rescue  organization  called  AlleyCATS  Alliance.    www.alleycatsalliance.net.  She  and  her  team  of  dedicated  cat  lovers  rescue  feral  and  orphaned  cats  and  kittens  from  the  streets,  rehabilitating  them,  providing  them  with  vet  care,  spay  &  neuter,  and  adopting  them  to  loving  homes.  December  is  extremely  excited  about  her  opportunity  to  work  for  the  Canadian  Curling  Association  and  the  2013  World  Financial  Group  Continental  Cup.    “There  is  little  more  rewarding  than  seeing  the  fruits  of  your  efforts  come  together  into  a  successful  event,  and  this  is  definitely  the  biggest  one  I’ve  worked  on!”  she  says.    “I’m  learning  a  lot  and  I  have  a  feeling  there  is  a  LOT  more  yet  to  come.”  December  loves  interacting  with  the  many  volunteers,  directors,  media,  and  event  partners.    Nothing  makes  her  happier  than  opportunities  to  design    print  projects,  develop  promotional  campaigns  and  schemes,  and  to  be  involved  in  community  networks.    “And  working  with  Terry  Morris…  well,  it’s  not  so  bad  either”.

BEHIND  THE  SCENES….  The  volunteers  manning  the  booths  at  local  events  aren’t  the  only  ones  who  are  making  things  happen  in  the  Promotions  Department!      It  also  takes  time  and  dedication  from  people  willing  to  get  up  in  the  wee  hours  of  the  morning  and  deliver  the  tents,  tables,  promo  items,  etc.  to  the  booth  locations.    These  same  people  are  then  responsible  for  picking  up  and  bringing  everything  back  to  the  Event  Office.    A  special  shout  out  to  Ken  Carlson,  Brian  Lang,  Ken  Johnston  and  Alex  Milner  for  being  such  great  go-‐to  guys!    Thanks  also  to  all  the  amazing  people  who  have  been  busy  postering  the  town!

Jon  Preston,  Officiating  Volunteer,  accompanied  by  his  wife  Caroline,  stopped  by  the  Event  Office  August  27th  to  pay  his  registration  fee  and  get  sized  for  his  uniform.    They  were  fresh  from  the  “4  Foot  Curling  Camp”  in  Parksville,  BC  where  they  just  spent  3  thrilling  days  learning  from  a  team  of  curling  professionals  and  experts  including  Kelowna  Curling  Club  Manager,  Jock  Tyre,  and  the  head  of  the  camp,  Elaine  Dagg-‐Jackson.    They  had  a  special  visit  on  Wednesday  from  Jennifer  Jones  who  autographed  their  brooms.

They  learned  a  ton  about  strategy,  team  dynamics,  and  communication.      All  of  these  things  are  sure  to  come  in  handy  when  Jon  officiates  at  the  2013  WFG  Continental  Cup  this  January!

Medical  volunteer,  Chris  Pond  was  on  hand  to  offer  his  wealth  of  medical  training:    “The  biggest  thing  was  encouraging  them  to  keep  going,  make  sure  they  were  stable  –  no  dehydration,  and  keeping  them  in  the  race,”  he  commented.    “One  woman  suffered  a  crash  and  was  very  upset.  This  was  where  my  experience  as  an  athlete  came  in  handy.    I  just  told  her  ‘you  can  do  this’.    ‘You’ve  suffered  a  crash,  but
