THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS’ USA LECTURE TOUR 2011 Subhead. Subhead. Subhead.
Subhead.
World Famous Creators of
The People’s Gallery. In the above photo you can see two of the artists Kevin
Hasson and Tom Kelly. In the middle is renowned art
critic Franco Bianchini with the city mayor; extreme left is Nobel Laureate and statesman John Hume, a
good friend and supporter of the three artists. Not in
the picture is the third member of the group, William
Kelly, author of the book Travels with Li Po.
THE LECTURE
The three artists give a presentation on their work as
political muralists. The Peoples’ Gallery they created is
a series of twelve large-scale murals situated in The
Bogside area of Derry City, Northern Ireland.
Thousands of people from all over the world visit Derry
each year to see them, bringing much trade and
revenue into the city. Two pages are devoted to the
artists and their gallery in The Lonely Planet and it has
appeared in countless magazines, newspapers and
television documentaries.
The murals commemorate over thirty years of civil
strife and conflict in the six counties of N. Ireland.
Some of these murals have become world famous
icons. They have stood the test of time and stand
nobly as sentinels for the protection of basic human
rights everywhere and democratic freedom for all the
people of the world.
Known locally as The Petrol
Bomber. Painted by the artists in
1994. One of the most photographed
art pieces in the world.
The Bogside Artists have received
standing ovations at
every university and college they have ever
visited from Sydney
Australia to Boston USA.
