Dear Parishioners,
Whenever a tragedy like Sutherland Springs, New
York last week, or the massacre at Las Vegas a few
weeks ago, happen, the news reports describe how, so
many of the funerals and support group meetings are
held in church and houses of worship. We see over
and over again evidence of religious belief in action
and of faith expressed in a very extreme environment
that is both heart rending and also affirming.
In the course of one funeral after the other, and the
many supportive gatherings, did you ever ask
yourself, where were the agnostics, the humanists, the
secularists and free-thinkers, or the “nones” as
Americans without any religious affiliation are often
called? Recent statistics from the Pew Research
Center found that “nones” now have risen to about
20% of the population.
The question about where they were is not raised as
an aggressive retort or put down to people who are in
these categories. It is raised to underline the unique
and irreplaceable role that religion has to play in a
time like that in New York or Las Vegas, or in the
other places that have been struck with tragedies.
People find in their church a source of meaning and a
sense of community that they cannot find anywhere
else when they desperately need to know that they are
not alone. This recognition was articulated by Greg
Epstein, the Humanist Chaplain at Harvard
University and author of the book “Good without
God.” “What religion has to offer at a time like
this” he wrote, “more than theology, more than
divine presence – is community…” Another
humanist psychologist in Kansas City made a similar
point, pointing out: “When people are in a terrible
kind of pain – a death that is unexpected, the
natural order is taken out of order – you would do
anything to take away the pain. The best that we
can do as humanists is to talk about that pain in
rational terms with the people who are suffering.”
Problem for the “nones” is that just talking can
never provide meaning at a time when people
above all else are searching to make sense out of
the tragic events of life.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament In the past few weeks, there has been a drop-
ping off of the numbers signing in for weekly
adoration. In fact, there were two occasions
when there was no one in the chapel. Each time
it was in the early afternoon. The hours of
10.00 am to 11.30 am and again 2.00 pm to
3.00 pm have been the weakest times. The
Blessed Sacrament, when exposed on the altar, should
never be left alone.
Easter Mass Filming
On Thursday, November 30th at 11am Bishop O’Connell will be celebrating a special Easter Mass. This mass will be filmed and then sent to the Interfaith Broadcast Commission. The footage will be used by various television networks on Easter Sunday 2018.
Parishioners wishing to attend this mass must first complete a waiver which can be found on the parish website or at the rectory. Families and youth are especially encouraged to attend this very unique mass.
There are a limited number of spots, tickets will be given out on a first come first served basis. Once accepted tickets are non-transferrable.
Easter appropriate attire is required of all those attending.
Installation of School Council Officers
School Council Officers were installed at St. Catharine School on November 1, Feast of All Saints. Pictured are School Council members Patrick Dolan, President, Jeffrey Vitale, Vice-President, Grace Child, Secretary, Kate Deane, Treasurer, with Fr. Cullen and Mr. Dougherty.

Cursillo Men’s Weekend - December 7-10
Are you searching for a way of deepening your
relationship with Christ, and discover or rediscover a
sense of Christian Community? Then come join with like
minded men and take a “Short Course” in Christianity.
Make a Cursillo weekend: beginning on Thursday night,
December 7th and running through Sunday afternoon,
December 10th, at St. Alfonso Retreat House, Long
Branch. The cost of the weekend is reasonably priced and
no sincere participant is turned away for financial reasons.
Cursillo is an active, worldwide evangelization ministry
and movement that is endorsed by our Holy Father and
Bishops throughout the world. Cursillo has been in the
Diocese of Trenton since 1972.
Centered on the Eucharist and based on three basic
concepts: piety, study and action, Cursillo promotes
Catholic ideals, fellowship, and spiritual growth in daily
living; and provides an opportunity to experience the love
of God within a supportive and prayerful community.
The Cursillo is a method of giving those, who have the
potential of influencing others, a personal encounter with
Christ and the means to further enhance, and spread the
Gospel of Jesus Christ through evangelizing their
environments.
You can find out more about Cursillo at the Trenton
Cursillo website at http://www.trentoncursillo.org/ or
by calling Adelaide Sangiorgi at 721-859-0253.
