Blood Pressure Screenings on the 2nd Tuesday
of each month, 12:30pm - 1:30pm, at the Convent.
Security Issues There have been a series of reports from churches across
the Diocese of serious security issues involving theft and
episodes involving scammers and con-artists. Individuals
and Groups of people have been showing up outside many
churches in the Diocese sometimes with placards or
cardboard signs, sometimes holding babies and asking for
money for gas, diapers etc. They reportedly have become
indignant and defensive when questioned about their
activities. We would ask everyone to be vigilant and if
you observe suspicious behavior around the church to alert
the ushers or the staff.

Dear Parishioners, On Saturday afternoon, September 9, the new
playground at St. Catharine School was blessed and
declared open for business. The vote of the school age
consumers was a resounding approval for the new
playground, as hundreds of students from the school
swarmed over the various components of the playground.
The blessing of the playground was preceded by an
outdoor Mass in the recess area concelebrated by Fr.
Cullen and Fr. O’Reilly. And the blessing was followed
by an informal family picnic on the grounds. The weather
was perfect, and many families stayed for several hours
enjoying the fun and fellowship. I am sure that the
reluctance of the children to leave the exciting new
playground was partly responsible for the late dispersal.
If you have not done so, drive around the back of the
school and take in the beauty of the playground. It is truly
magnificent, and the result of several years of dogged
determination and very focused hard work on the part of
the school PTA. When I arrived here as pastor three years
ago, The PTA Playground Committee was under the
leadership of Jeannie Dwyer and Meagan Rigney.
I remember some time after I arrived Jeannie and Meagan
presented me with the projected designs of a new
playground to replace the ancient and fast deteriorating
one that had greeted students back to school for over 30
years. The plans looked wonderful, and I was an
enthusiastic cheerleader – that is until I looked at the
estimates. I remember saying: “this would be a great
asset to the school” but thinking to myself at the same
time, (after looking at the numbers), “It’s probably never
going to happen!” I wasn’t reckoning with the
determination and “can-do” attitude of Jeannie and the
succeeding PTA leadership and the playground
committee. I’m still not sure how they pulled it off, and
raised the funds, but it has come to pass, and future
generations of students will thank them for it in the years
ahead. The parish of St. Catharine-St. Margaret thanks
them also, and to the members of the SCS Playground
Committee and members of the PTA who supported their
efforts, a great big “Thank You and Congratulations!”

Mission of Mercy Uganda
On September 30th/October 1st, Sister Carole and
members of Mission of Mercy will speak at the masses
about their work providing quality education and health
care to the people of Uganda.
They will ask for your continued generous support that
you have given over the past 15 years. A collection will
be taken up those same dates, and green envelopes will
be provided in the pews and in the rear of the church for
these contributions. Checks should be made payable to
St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish with Mission of
Mercy in the memo section on the check. Envelopes can
be placed in the second collection basket or mailed to Sr.
Carole, St. Catharine Convent, 211 Essex Avenue,
Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
This year Mission of Mercy hopes to accomplish the
completion of a Women’s Ward at the Alanyi Clinic in
the bush area of Lira. Moms on a Mission, our partner
organization in Westfield directed by Kerry Mooney and
Ali Costalos, provided $25,000 for the construction of
this building. It is now in its final stages.
Next we hope to begin the construction of a Nursery
School at St. Kizito’s in the forest of Lwetunga. We
have already completed school blocks for Grades 1-7
and a dormitory for girls in Grade 7. Additionally, with
the help of Spring Lake-Brielle Rotary Club, we have
provided clean drinking water through the construction
of a borehole and light for children at night through their
Luci Light campaign.
Also we sponsor 113 orphaned/needy children and
would like to have more children sponsored. These
children receive tuition assistance, a uniform, notebook
and the entire school community receives a porridge
breakfast and lunch! Rachelle Maget and Tesa Carlson
are the Coordinators of this project and applications for
new sponsors will be provided in the back of the church
for anyone interested in becoming a sponsor for $350.00
a year. Sponsors receive a picture of the child, a yearly
thank you and updates. If you are already a sponsor,
renewal forms will be sent to you throughout the year.
Finally, we would like to begin the construction of a
fence to enclose the Alanyi Primary School grounds.
This is a rural school across the road from the Alanyi
Health Center that is home to 2,000 children. To date
we have constructed a new school block, provided solar
lighting, a computer room and developed a Little League
Baseball Team. Additionally, we would like to continue
advancing our sports initiative and any gently used
baseball equipment is welcomed for donation.
Sister Carole MacKenthun, RSM and Joy Foley,
Directors of Mission of Mercy.
St. Catharine’s 3 year old pre-school class took a break from playing on the new playground to pose for a picture with their teacher, Mrs. Tara Brazinski, and teacher’s aide, Mrs. Meghan Oswin.
St. Rose High School Open House Thursday, October 12th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm. For
additional information or to sign up go to

Haiti Drive Update Thank you to all those who helped with the Haiti drive. Thanks to all those who contributed by donating items and financial assistance to ship the many items. We were able to send 4 big boxes and two 52 gallon barrels full with needed items. They can use the barrels for rain water. We still have a 1½ boxes of more items to ship. I know the Sisters there appreciate your generosity. God bless each of you, Sister Margaret

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
“We, the Catholic community of St. Catharine ‑ St. Margaret, gather in Christ's name to nurture spiritual growth through the various stages and challenges of life.
We are committed through liturgy, sacraments and parish activities ‑ to proclaim the message of the Gospel, to provide a quality Catholic education for children and adults, to continue to build community and to serve those in need. Rich in the traditions established in this community during the last century, we challenge ourselves to live our faith in loving service to the community's residents and its many summer visitors.
We affirm our concern for all members of the Mystical Body of Christ everywhere and particularly those who require assistance.
And always, we seek to know and love God and to love our neighbor as Jesus taught us.”
