A Spirituality and Health Lecture On

Yoga

November 10th at 4:00 PM

The spirituality committee will sponsor a program on yoga as a continuation of its presentations on spirituality and health. Yoga enhances physical fitness and leads to a calming of the mind. It Improves memory function and processing speed and has been found to improve quality of life and reduce stress which is a leading cause of illness. Because of the multiple health benefits of yoga the World Health Organization declared June 21st as International Yoga Day. Hope you can fit this into your busy schedules. Jack Harrigan M.D.

I read the New York Times everyday. I never miss it. I

also read the Wall Street Journal, and other newspapers

online..… Every day……. Some people think I am a

masochist. I guess I’m a “newsaholic”. Eventually they

will find a cure or a pill that I can take.

I have discovered over the years that I am not the only

Catholic who reads the New York Times. I have some

good company. Archbishop Dolan of New York

apparently reads it too. I remember reading some time

back that Archbishop Dolan has had it with the Catholic-

bashing New York Times.

This article pointed out that Arch bishop Dolan is known

for his easy going and even -tempered demeanor – but he

took to his blog to blast the paper for “gushing” reviews it

gave to an art exhibit that criticized the late Cardinal

O’Connor, and a play that makes fun of nuns.

“The common, casual way the New York Times offends

Catholic sensitivity is something that they would never

think of doing – rightly so- to Jewish, Black, Islamic or

gay communities”, he wrote.

At that time the Times had heartily recommended an art

exhibit in the West Village by the AIDS activist group

ACT UP that features a blasphemous picture of the late

Cardinal O’Connor, and a play in the East Village called

“The Divine Sister” that was described as “fresh and

funny” by the Times. Archbishop Dolan accused the

paper of “promoting cheap laughs at the expense of a

bigoted view of the most noble women around” …“These

are nuns, mocked and held up for snickering,” the

Archbishop wrote.

The Times responded that it covers cultural events even if

some may disagree with the content. But Archbishop

Dolan wasn’t having any of it. “If they are going to say,

‘Oh, No, we do that all the time’, I’m going to say, show

me when you do it to the Islamic community, to the

African American community, to the gay community.

They don’t do it because they know it is out of bounds.”

I was reminded of this last week when those WIKI Leaks

emails from one of the Presidential campaigns was

published, denigrating and deploring the position of the

Catholic Church and observant Catholics on an array of

positions.

It was comforting to recall that the Archbishop of New

York sent a message that he is not prepared to sit around

quietly when a powerful institution like the New York

Times feels that it can disrespect the Catholic Church in a

way that it would not dare to do to other prominent

groups.

Mass of Remembrance All Souls Day

You are invited to join in a Mass of Remembrance with those who have lost a loved one during the past year. A reading of the names of the deceased, a candle to be lit for each and special prayers will be included during the 5:00 PM Mass at St. Catharine Church on Saturday, November 5th. By your attendance you will show support for those who are going through a difficult time and will reinforce the feeling of community and solidarity here at St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish.

Share the Joyful Gospel on Catholic Radio 89.3 FM (home or in the car) or online at www.domesticchurchmedia.org.

Whether perceived or real, the alleged anti-Catholic bias

of the New York Times is one reason why some of my

friends criticize me for reading that paper every day.

Some of the people who criticize me for reading the New

York Times admit that they do not read any newspaper.

Some of them form their opinions and their views largely

from listening to, and watching the cable news channels. I

guess they would contend that it is preferable to surround

and immerse yourself with people and views that are

similar to your own rather than to open your self to the

dissonance of points of view that are not consistent with

your own world view.

That is why, I am glad to note that Archbishop Dolan

reads the New York Times. I guess that he, like myself,

believes that it is important to keep your friends close, but

it is even more important to keep your enemies close – not

that I am suggesting that that newspaper is our enemy, but

just that it often presents a point of view and a way of

looking at things that is diametrically different from the

way we see things.

Fr Harry Cullen

Retraction!!!

Last week in the welcome to Fr. Martin to the parish, I made an

error that I have suffered for all week. I said that Fr Martin

was from Co Monaghan in Northern Ireland. If I had said that

he was from the northern part of Ireland (Ulster) I would have

been fine, but I erroneously placed him in the “occupied” part of

Ireland known as Northern Ireland. For the record, Fr Martin

is from Co Monaghan which is part of the Irish Republic.

Mass Intention Book Opens

Friday, November 4th at

1:30 PM

in the CONVENT Offices

We will book Masses for next year in person on a first-come,

first-served basis. We regret that we must limit the number

of Masses booked to 5 per family at this time. No Mass

intentions can be accepted by phone. Please consider that there are more than 3,900 registered

families in our parish and the parish has about 1200 Masses

each year. The usual offering for each announced Mass is $10.

We are not able to take requests over the telephone. Forms are

available in the churches and in the rectory office.

Please be patient. Last year there were hundreds of requests

during the first week.

Please keep in mind that we also can accept any number of

UNANNOUNCED Mass intentions, although we cannot tell

you when or where the Mass will be said and there will be no

announcement in the bulletin for this Mass.

*You can also enroll your deceased loved one in the Memorial

Mass Society.

The Mass book will be opened as usual on Monday, November 7th at the RECTORY reception desk.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

A Dedication Ceremony on Behalf of

the Unborn

Next Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4:00PM you are all invited to take part in a very meaningful and different type of dedication ceremony here at St. Catharine Church. It is in honor of the Unborn. Unborn, as in those unfortunate souls whose lives have been intentionally terminated before birth. Intentionally aborted while still in the womb.

The dedication ceremony will include a blessing of the beautiful new granite memorial stone recently installed (see photo). Carved into the stone are the Lord's words from Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I consecrated you." There will also be prayers confirming that, as God's creation, these human beings, small as they may be, are entitled to life. And that we will continue to fight the evil act that snuffs out the lives of these defenseless before they take their first breath or ever see the light of day.

The ceremony will be simple and solemn, and include singing by some of the students from St. Catharine School. It will take place outside, across from St. Catharine Church at the far end of the Lady of Fatima shrine area. Dear people, please mark your calendars: Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4:00PM. And join us for this special ceremony. You'll be glad you did.

The monument project and dedication ceremony has been coordinated by the Mary's Child Pro-Life Ministry represented by these six (6) parishes: St. Catharine-St. Margaret, St. Denis, St. Elizabeth, Holy Innocents, St Marks and St. Rose.

Urgent! HELP WANTED Urgent!

Are you searching for meaningful volunteer work for the

benefit of your parish? Perhaps you have a background in

writing and/or public relations and/or marketing. Maybe

you are retired? Maybe you have some time to spare that

could be used immersing yourself in the exciting life of St.

Catharine-St. Margaret Parish and/or St. Catharine

School? We have had some very exciting events in our

parish and in our school in recent times that deserve to be

highlighted in the local press and elsewhere. Sadly, we do

not always have someone we can reliably look to represent

us and let the world know that we are members of a world

class parish and school. Like to give it a shot? Or like to

just discuss it? Call Fr Cullen at the rectory (732 449

5765) or email at [email protected]

designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. Please call 732-449-5765, ext. 134.
