Dear Parishioners,
This weekend, we are asking everyone in the parish to respond to 5 simple questions pertaining to the parish music ministry. I believe that everyone in the parish is aware by now that the scope and direction of the music at our liturgies has been changing and evolving over the past year. As we move forward we feel it is important to touch base with the members of the parish and get your feedback as we move forward.
You will remember that in 2017 the parish entered on a strategic planning process with a series of town hall meetings and planning sessions. At that time a top concern and challenge expressed by members of the parish was ministry to, and involvement of youth, in the life of the parish. An analysis of the 31 active parish ministries presented to the parish pastoral council at our May meeting this year, concluded that the 31 existing organizations and ministries of the parish primarily serve those who are over 30 years of age, have children, or are empty-nesters/retired. Said another way, young adults ages 19-30 (17% of the parish), and high school students (8%) are the least served age groups.
This has to be an urgent challenge for the parish. As part of the response, the council is proposing to meet with the leadership of the 31 ministries and encourage every organization and ministry in the parish to examine how they can incorporate a serious outreach to, and accommodate the needs of the youth and young adult population of the parish. We will be taking additional steps also as we move forward and we will highlight these initiatives here in the bulletin.
The evolution of the music ministry of the parish reflects this challenge also. As we have sought to involve the youth of the parish in the music ministry, we are discovering a wealth of talent and enthusiasm that I think you will have noticed and appreciated. It is very affirming to see more and more young members of the parish stepping forward and sharing their musical talents and their beautiful voices. To me it has been a very satisfying and affirming development.
Another aspect of the development of our music ministry has been the ability of Dr. Tafaro, our music director, to attract nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians to take a leadership role in our music ministry. We have been highlighting some members of the St. Catharine-St. Margaret String Quartet in this bulletin for the past few weeks to allow you to appreciate the high quality and excellence of the music that you encounter when you participate in the liturgies of the parish
As we move forward it is our intention to make sure that you are aware of what to expect musically when you come to Mass. I am aware that the change to a more contemporary
sound at some of our Masses has been difficult for some members of the parish who prefer a more traditional style and sound. On the weekend we have 8 Masses (9 during the Summer months), so there is the opportunity to accommodate the differing musical proclivities of the members of the parish. We are evolving in the direction of providing you with a strategic plan for musical style at each of our Masses on the weekend to let you know the traditional/contemporary emphasis of each Mass that will allow for greater participation, prayerfulness and committed involvement.
Now that the parish now provides a recording of weekly homilies on YouTube, we will be moving in the direction of providing the members of the parish with a recording of the style of music and the musicians at each Mass through this medium
For now, please take the time to register your opinion about our liturgical music by responding to the questions on the card in the pew this weekend.

New Organ St. Catharine Church
A new state of the art organ is currently being installed in St. Catharine Church. The new organ and the structural modifications required for its installation were funded from the generous endowment from the estate of Ruth Rempke, who loved St. Catharine Church. The current organ will be transferred to St. Margaret Church to replace the aging instrument there.

Contact your Legislators to Oppose Assisted
Suicide: On Monday, March 12, the Assembly Judiciary Committee released the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (A1504). The bill will now be voted on by the General Assembly, possibly as early as June 7. The bill would allow physicians to prescribe drugs to end the lives of terminally ill individuals considered to have six months to live. The facts are clear - in California, in Vermont and in Oregon - states that have passed assisted suicide bills - insurance companies have denied individuals expensive healthcare coverage but offered them low cost drugs to end their life. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded as a financial liability for the insurance company, and decisions to encourage death could be driven by reducing costs. Please contact your state legislators TODAY and tell them that you oppose A1504/S1072. For an easy way to find your legislators and voice your opposition, go to www.njcatholic.org and click “Take Action”
