AND HONEST ELECTIONS

Rotary is apolitical. It does not endorse candidates nor embark on partisan politics. It, however, works with the LGU no matter who are elected into office. Last October 25, the nation held its Barangay and SK Elections. Rotary Club of Makati Olympia, organized its New Generations and Community Service Committees to help ensure a free, honest and clean election. As early as the week before the elections, the Youth Voters Forum was held where issues most important to the young voters were openly discussed. On election day, the Olympians Y-voteRs were fielded in various public schools in Bgy. Olympia to mainly help voters find their polling places and assist them in their concerns.

The Interactors led by DIR Miguel Bermido and IPDIR Janine Astrande undertook the I-Election where they picked and collected the trash and garbage especially the sample ballots and plastic bottles and soft drink cans as a clean-up activity. They later sold these. Proceeds were allocated for the activities that will be undertaken during the Interact week this November 6-13. The Y-VoteRs stayed on till proclamation of the winners. It was a very good opportunity for Rotary Club of Makati Olympia and its sponsored youth to serve as non-partisan participants in the country's political exercise. It looks forward to working with the newly elected officials to further its service endeavors in Barangay Olympia.

Rotary Celebrates TRF Month in November

My Dear Fellow Olympians,

Welcome November… How

October flew! Like the

previous months, October

was most memorable. How

can we forget it when we

had our Charter presentation

during this month! I take this opportunity to thank

again everyone for making it a very successful club

milestone. It is now etched in our history and has

set our standard for the years to come.

I encourage everyone to have the same fervor as we

prepare for another club milestone in December -

the Governor's visit. For a charter club, this will be

another first for us. This is the time when our dear

Gov. Ed Alvarez will visit us in our home. The

governor's visit is a mandated activity for the club

each year. During this time, the District Governor

dialogues with the President and the Club Officers

and members for him/her to see the real status of the

club. The initial commitments that we promised to

do which were presented during the Team Visit last

August 24 to AG Chochit Tobias will be reviewed

to see how we are doing. Beyond this, however, it is

like expecting the visit of an important family

member. The Filipinos and Olympians that we are,

we prepare and look forward to giving our best to

our guest.

I call on our ever dependable CS Jay and Club

Administration Director Malu to start planning for

this. All the Committee Directors and Sub-

Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs are likewise

encouraged to step up on your individual committee

activities as we need all of these to be reported on

said visit. I specially mention the Membership

Committee. We cannot rest because we are done

with our charter presentation. We have to

continuously nurture our members as we recruit

PEACE IS IT! FORUM

Rotary Club of Makati Olympia participated as one of the 28 co-host clubs to RC Makati Essensa in the Peace is It! Forum held last October 28, 2010 at the St. Luke's Global City Auditorium. CP Rose Acoba, Dir Ju Abdulcadir and DIR Miguel Bermido represented RCMO. Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution is one of the areas of focus included in the Future Vision Plan. The Peace is It! Forum aimed to discuss and showcase the endeavors of the participating clubs on this. Notable speakers like DG Ed Alvarez, DGE Billy Villareal, DGN Sue Sta. Maria and DGND Robert Kuan were among those who talked about peace in the different aspects of people's lives. RCMO's participation is a prelude to its endeavors to promote peace. Come November 6, it shall celebrate the Interact week with its sponsored Interact clubs by holding a Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution Forum. It shall also hold a Peace Camp for its sponsored Rotaractors and their corresponding sister clubs from 8 Philippine Districts on November 20-21.

Meantime, let us not forget our activities this

November. It is our TRF (The Rotary Foundation)

Month. Remember the Sustaining Member Pin given us

during our Charter Presentation? We need to make

good our promise of our individual contribution of $100

to the Foundation. While we contribute to the TRF, it

will go back to us 3-4 times more as we are preparing to

have Matching Grant with our Matched Club, RC

Namyang, Korea.

My fellow Olympians, we are a hardworking club.

Whatever we have done thus far are your

accomplishments as they are mine. The tasks ahead are

endless but they are not impossible to do because we are

committed to fulfilling them. So.... Go, Olympia, Go!

LITERACY CAMPAIGN THROUGH BOOK DONATION

Matched Clubs Rotary Clubs of Los Banos Makiling and Marikina North were recipients of books from Rotary Club of Makati Olympia. This is to further their joint efforts to promote basic literacy. Both Rotary Clubs of Los Banos - Makiling and Marikina North will give the books to their respective sponsored public elementary schools. PP Linda Rebugio and Rtn Lourdes Bantilan accepted the donation on behalf of RC Los Banos - Makiling while PP Ging Ramos received the books on behalf of RC Marikina North. At present, the sponsored Rotaract Club of RC Marikina North has participated in some AKLAT sessions done in September. In turn, RCMO shall hold story telling sessions in Marikina this November. RCMO shall also observe and participate in CLE sessions being done by RC Marikina North.

The Rotary Foundation The Rotary Foundation of RI is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Financial Support In the year ended 30 June 2009, The Rotary Foundation received contributions totaling US$223.8 million and spent $187.8 million in support of humanitarian and educational programs implemented by clubs and districts and global polio eradication activities. Contributions go into one of three main funds: � Annual Programs Fund, which provides grants and awards through Foundation programs � Permanent Fund, an endowment from which only a portion of the earnings are spent in support of Foundation programs, ensuring the long term viability of the Foundation � PolioPlus Fund supports Rotary’s goal of a polio-free world. Every dollar contributed to the Foundation funds the humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and program operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out many worthy projects worldwide. The Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative, designed to encourage worldwide annual per capita giving of $100 or more, supports vital Foundation programs. Educational Programs These programs promote international understanding by bringing together people from different countries and cultures. Ambassadorial Scholarships, an international program for university level studies, sends about 500 students each year to serve as ambassadors of goodwill while abroad. Rotary Peace Fellowships are awarded to individuals for study in master’s degree and professional certificate programs at one of the six Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Group Study Exchange is a short term cultural and vocational exchange program between districts in different countries for non-Rotarian professionals ages 25 – 40. cont’d. on page 4

Humanitarian grants enable Rotarians to increase their support of international service projects that provide water wells, medical care, literacy classes, and other essentials to people in need. Rotarian participation is key to the success of these projects. Matching Grants assist Rotary clubs and districts in carrying out humanitarian projects with clubs and districts in other countries. District Simplified Grants enable districts to support service activities or humanitarian endeavors that benefit local or international communities. PolioPlus Eradicating polio is Rotary’s top priority. The PolioPlus program provides funding for mass immunization campaigns and support for social mobilization, surveillance, and laboratories to help carry out the final stages of global polio eradication. Rotarians have raised funds that will amount to more than $1.2 billion in support by the time the world is certified polio-free and have provided hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours. Rotary is a spearheading partner with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in this initiative. As a result of their efforts, over two billion children under age five have received the polio vaccine, five million people who might otherwise be paralyzed are walking today, 500,000 new cases of polio are prevented each year, and the number of polio cases has declined by 99 percent worldwide. Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge In 2007 and 2009, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recognized Rotary’s leadership in the polio eradication effort with challenge grants of $100 million and $255 million. Grant funds are spent on immunization and other polio eradication activities. Rotary’s challenge aims to raise $200 million in matching funds by 30 June 2012, and every Rotary club is asked to help by organizing an annual public fundraising event. The $555 million generated will be a vital catalyst to help achieve Rotary’s top priority.

Celebrate Rotary Foundation Month

November is Rotary Foundation Month. It all began in 1917 when then RI President Arch Klumph announced the acceptance of endowments for doing good in the world – The Rotary Foundation was born! Contributions took off in 1947 in memory of our founder Paul Harris. Although The Rotary Foundation originally sponsored only educational programs, it added humanitarian programs in the late 1960s and has continued to evolve with the addition of our famous PolioPlus program to our Permanent Fund, the Rotary Centers for International Studies and, finally, the Future Vision Plan.

Our 3-year Future Vision pilot took effect on 1 July. The pilot is intended to teach us what is good – or bad – in our plan, so that we can correct it, as the Future Vision Plan is here to stay.

However, The Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision Plan is much more than just a plan for the Foundation. Rotary International’s Strategic Plan is a parallel plan which, to a large extent, joins and supplements our plan. We are too small an organization for two plans of this magnitude – they shall have to merge. Not necessarily tomorrow, but some time after 2017 when The Rotary Foundation celebrates its 100th anniversary. If I were to target a year for this merger, I would pick 2025 – the year when our Permanent Fund is expected to reach USD1,000,000,000.00 (one billion!).

How can we reach this goal? By Building

Communities – Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.
