Dear Parents, Students and Staff

We expect that extra events taking place in the College at present will generate a great sense of enthusiasm and excitement. Events include Artsfest, Bali Week, Sports Carnivals, the College Fete and Open Day and later in the year, Graduation. Our whole school Flashmob practice has generated its own level of excitement as it is not often that 1000 people try to move in a synchronised manner. A special commendation goes especially to Miss Meyer who did an absolutely amazing job coordinating the whole thing. Our Japanese and French Exchange Students have added an international flavour to the College and we were sad to see them leave. I was proud of the welcome and hospitality extended to them by our staff and students. We wish them all the best for the future. Over the next few weeks we ask the whole Quinns Baptist College community to support the up and coming calendar events, such as Artsfest, the Athletics Carnivals and the College Fete/Open Day. The Year 12 Human Biology cohort attended Perth Zoo last week. Students had a chance to examine why humans are classified as ‘Primates’ and the evolutionary trends within this order. As part of the ATAR 4 syllabus, they were given the opportunity to gather first hand information on comparative anatomy, physiology and behaviour. All of these characteristics are used to identify the similarities and differences between the Hominidae (Great Ape) family and traits of early Hominins. A very well structured lecture was delivered by zoo staff to consolidate all that was learned in the classroom and students got a chance to examine skulls of various human ancestors and other primates.

Virtues Parenting Program Lots of children these days have regular hassles with friendships, communicating and self-esteem.

The purpose of teaching The Virtues is to develop a culture of character where respect, patience, self-discipline, tolerance and joy for learning are among the virtues children master.

The Virtues Strategies can easily be integrated into how parents interact with their children in the home, when disciplining them and supporting socialisation. It is a positive, holistic program which has been used in many cultures and countries throughout the world to bring out the best in our children.

Being a parent is the most complex and important activity on the planet. Parents are the child’s first and most important educators, yet they receive little or no training in what to do or how to do it. Unfortunately, children don’t come with instruction manuals.

Teaching virtues to children is a way of bringing out the best in every child. Each day of living with children brings fresh opportunities for guiding them and using “teachable moments” which pass quickly and may never come again. Children are born in and with potential; their natural qualities can develop into positive or negative traits depending on how they are educated in the early years. Character develops as children learn to make responsible, moral choices with self-esteem being a natural outcome
