The President’s Corner

My dear Fellow

Olympians,

It had been a very hectic

week, as usual. It

would have been just

our week for

for fellowship and fun, but we had

work, work and work to be done... It

was still a lot of fun, though.

We started with the signing of the

MOA with Philippine Baking

Association on the occasion of the

International Bakery Fair at the

World Trade Center, no less, last

Sunday, Feb 20. Partnership

signaled the launch of the Pan de

Olympia Project which will enable us

to have our selected youth

beneficiaries train in baking and

bakery operation for them to have

sustainable livelihood.

The Rotary Club of Makati Olympia

(RCMO) entered a Memorandum of

Agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Baking Society for a long

term partnership to give training and livelihood to deserving youth.

The signing of the MOA by Charter

President Rose Acoba and Chito Chavez, president of the Philippine

Baking Society signals the launch

of RCMO’s Pan de Olympia Project where sponsored

Rotaractors will be given training by the Society in baking and

bakery operations.

Initial bakery equipment shall be

provided by the Society, while RCMO shall provide the site for the

bakery and supervise its operation. It shall also help in

marketing the products.

PE Jay’s Corner

My dear Fellow

Olympians,

Working hard and

being smart is a good

old advice especially for the

younger generation, be it in

business or life in general.

That same age old adage was

the key in Rotary’s successful

END POLIO campaign in the

Philippines. RIPD Rafael

Hechanova himself said it took

brave Rotary men and women

of action which rolled the RI

Grant in 1979 for the successful

widespread initial inoculations

of Filipino children. Cont’d on p. 2…

students.

To jumpstart the agreement, a

scholar will be sent to Iloilo on March

13 for a one-month training. Upon return, equipment will be set up and

the scholar shall conduct echo training to four other beneficiaries.

Actual operation of the Pan de Olympia Bakeshop is expected to

start by May 2011.

The MOA signing took place during

the International Bakery Fair at the World Trade Center where the

Philippine Baking Society was the main organizer. PE Jay Bataclan,

Dir. Ju Abdulcadir, Diory Bermido,

Rotaract President Ahl Legaspi and Interact Presidents Toffee Rapisura

and Jennyvin Ros as well as spouse Al Acoba witnessed the MOA

signing. Philippine Baking Society

officers including Immediate Past President Ale Paez were also

We took a break Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday, we had the big community

service activity at Pateros St., Makati

City with Convergys and the local

government of Brgy. Olympia through

Community Service Chair Seg Gonzales

who is incidentally a Kagawad of said

barangay. We had feeding for 200 kids,

storytelling and fun games. More than

40 employees and managers of said BPO

company sponsored the activity as part

of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

So touching was the event that many

participants were moved to tears when

they saw the plight of our less fortunate

children in the heart of the premier city

of the Philippines.

The many activities done this week

which culminate in the completion of the

Global Peace Festival are fitting end to

the celebration of the World

Understanding Month.

Great going, RCMO!

These two will again be the key

for fellow Olympians who are

incredibly busy with activities - a

lot of which are geared for the

youth (vocational tours, peace

festivals, feeding programs). It is

working hard for a lasting

imprint so that we can all make

a difference and make life

better to the next person. It is als

being smart to know what is of

value. Beneath the accolades

is the drive to do good, work

hard and be smart in reaching

for one’s goals with a higher

purpose. Behind it all is the

LOVE that we Rotarians have

for our fellow brethren, a service

truly above oneself.

On Tuesday, Feb 22, we had our

monthly fellowship at NY Pizza

Palace. Thanks, Alex, for giving us a

spot in the resto! Food was great! Of

course, company was incomparable.

Thanks, too, to April and Aidi of

Convergys, for joining us then and

briefing us of the community

endeavors that we will be doing

together. Thank you, most of all, for

accepting our invitation for you to be

one of us. Welcome to RCMO! We

will certainly love to have young

professionals like you join us.

Wednesday was very busy. We had

our vocational activity at the

Cosmetologie 2011 with our Partner,

ATHAG (Association of Traditional

Health Aid Givers, Inc.) Then we

proceeded to the Beaming of the End

Polio Now to celebrate Rotary's

birthday... It was really a great

experience. With PE Jay, Dir Ju and

our Rotaractors, Diory and Ahl, we

had the time of our life for it was also a

reunion with our sister clubs – RCs

RCMO CELEBRATES ROTARY'S BIRTHDAY

February is a very special month. It is the birthday of Rotary.

Rotary Club of Makati Olympia celebrated the day by joining the multi-district Beaming of the End Polio Now at the Mall of Asia. CP Rose Acoba together with PE Jay Bataclan, Dir. Ju Abdulcadir, Diory Bermido and Rotaract President Ahl Legaspi joined the celebration. The event was made more meaningful as the RCMO contingent had a reunion with matched clubs from RC Pasig West, RC Marikina North, RC Los Banos, RC Los Banos Makiling and RC Malate Prime.

Seven governors from 7 districts graced the occasion. PRID Paing Hechanova gave the keynote message on the efforts of the Philippine Rotary to eradicate polio.

The Globe at the Mall of Asia was one of the landmarks around the world which were illuminated to celebrate the 106th birthday of Rotary.

3 vocational tours for sponsored youths

Rotary Club of Makati Olympia did

three vocational tours with its sponsored youth for the week of

February 20 - 27, 2011.

Last February 20, CP Rose Acoba

with PE Jay Bataclan and Dir. Ju Adulcadir brought along Rotaractors

and Interactors to the International Bakery Fair at the World Trade

Center. The Rotarians and the youth

were toured around a wide-range of activities for career opportunities,

various equipment, suppliers and goods in the said industry. Two

RCMO Members, Lalaine Bataclan

and Ale Paez, belong to this industry.

The next tour was last February 23 at the Cosmetologie 2011. Together

with one of its partners in service, Association of Traditional Health

Givers, Inc. or ATHAG, it had a

booth in said event. Like the first vocational tour, CP Rose Acoba, PE

Jay Bataclan, Dir. Ju Abdulcadir together with the

sponsored Rotaractors and Interactors participated in the

event. As a social entrepreneur, PE

Jay Bataclan is involved in this industry.

The third vocational tour was the

Amazing Show. This was done last

February 25. Dir. Ju Abdulcadir who is into Theater, brought Rotaractors

and Interactors to the said event at Manila Film Center of the

Philippines. The production is owned by PE Kyo Lee of matched club RC

Malate Prime.

Yes, RCMO and Convergys CAN!

Over 40 managers and employees of the BPO giant Convergys, joined the community outreach organized by RCMO last February 25.

Some 200 kids aged 0 - 10 were provided with lugaw, sandwiches and an ice cream treat. Story telling sessions and fun games were also conducted. Prizes composed of school supplies and toys were then given.

Seeing so many children living in the heart of Makati City who barely have enough food to eat, clothes to wear and decent house to live in, many Convergys employees were moved to tears. The said activity signals the start of RCMO and Convergys partnership to serve humanity. Joint projects in the pipeline are the Balik Aral in May and June, tree planting activities and other community outreach projects.

Rotarians celebrate Rotary's 106th anniversary by Diana Schoberg and Arnold R. Grahl

ROTARY international NEWS

Rotarians around the world celebrated Rotary's 106th anniversary with a variety of activities drawing attention to the progress that has been made to eradicate polio and the need to finish the job. Representatives of Rotary International and Sanofi Pasteur, a leading provider of polio vaccine, helped ring the opening bell in four European financial markets, in Lisbon, Portugal; Amsterdam; Brussels; and Paris. A closing-bell ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange was done 15:40 Eastern Time with remarks by RI President Ray Klinginsmith and Michael Watson, Sanofi Pasteur's vice president of global immunization policy. This was followed by a countdown to the final bell at 16:00. In the evening, the exterior of the stock exchange building was illuminated with Rotary's End

Polio Now message, joining other global landmarks in a dramatic visual public awareness campaign to build support for polio eradication. In Rome, hundreds of Rotarians and guests gathered for the lighting of the iconic Trevi Fountain and a reception for a special exhibit of artwork from “Amazing Stories of Polio!” and “The Remarkable Mr. Harris,” two illustrated works that appeared in The Rotarian. Organizers sold a commemorative poster drawn by the artist, Steve Buccellato, to raise money for polio eradication. During the event, attendees premiered a new "This Close" testimonial, featuring actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta. Cucinotta is best known for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Il Postino and as a Bond girl. Rotary’s This Close polio awareness campaign featured a

growing roster of public figures and celebrities raising their thumbs and forefingers in the "this close" gesture. These print, outdoor, and broadcast public service announcements are in support of a polio free world. The city of Montalban, Italy, was among other landmark lighting events, including the parliament building in The Hague; the soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa; a gate at the Lantern Festival in Taiwan; Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Japan; the government building in Karachi, Pakistan; the planetarium in Seoul, Korea; the Globe of the Mall of Asia in the Philippines; Byblos Castle in Byblos, Lebanon; and the Charminar in Hyderabad, India. Rotary clubs and districts also organized a variety of celebrations in honor of the 106th anniversary. Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland planned ahead, selling and planting 4.6 million crocus bulbs across the region in October so their purple blooms would flower in late February. The color purple is meant to evoke the purple dye used to mark the fingers of children who have received the oral polio vaccine during National Immunization Days. The Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse, Hertfordshire, England, earned a citation in Guinness World Records for the most people (636) simultaneously planting flower bulbs, during an event at a Hitchin park.

Representatives of Rotary International and Sanofi Pasteur, a leading provider of polio

vaccine, helped ring the opening bell in Brussels.

ROTARY information of the week

On February 23, 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr’s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. Harris’ desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship. Read about each of the first four Rotarians below, and about Harry L. Ruggles, who is often called the "fifth Rotarian." Rotary’s founder, Harris , was born in Wisconsin, USA, on April 19, 1868. He was raised by his paternal grandparents in Vermont and attended the University of Vermont, Princeton, and the University of Iowa. He was Rotary president from 1910 to 1912 and a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago until his death on January 27, 1947.

Loehr , a mining engineer, was born on October 18, 1864 in Carlinville, Illinois. He was a Rotarian for only a few years, never holding office at the club or international level. But that first Rotary meeting was held in his office, Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. He died in Chicago on May 23, 1918. A Rotarian for only a few years, Shorey served as recording secretary during the club’s first year. He was born in Maine on August 1862 and died on March 1944. Schiele, a coal dealer, served as the Chicago club’s first president in 1905 and Rotary International’s third treasurer in 1945. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1870, Schiele attended Terre Haute Business College and served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. He was president of the Schiele Coal Company from 1902 until his retirement in 1939.

He and Harris became lifelong friends and lived near each other on the South Side of Chicago. Schiele died on December 17, 1945 and is buried near Harris at Mount Hope Cemetery. Originally from Michigan, Ruggles was a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and joined Rotary at its second meeting. He was treasurer of the Chicago club during its first year, president from 1908 to 1910, and a Rotary director from 1912 to 1913. He is known for having introduced singing to Rotary club meetings. His printing company, H.L. Ruggles & Co., printed the first issue of The National Rotarian and the first Rotary songbook. He died on October 26, 1959, an honorary member of seven clubs in addition to his home club, the Rotary Club of Chicago.
