TRIP LEADERS NEEDED

A familiar call for help to all those budding trip leaders out there. We are need of leaders to run trips, especially day trips. Have a look at the Year Planner and take on one of the suggested trips (with no name attached) or you can suggest a des-tination your self. You might even like to team up with another club member to organize and plan a trip. If you need assistance to plan or organize your trip just ask a committee member who will gladly help out.

EX MJOC Members Start New Jeep Club in QLD Hi there Ian, I'm not sure if you remember us but we were in the club we had the white Cherokee Turbo Diesel from Queensland we were in the club for about 6 - 7 months and did the training course and a few trips in the snow. well I'm just dropping you a line to say hi and congratulations on the new look of the club and web site as I'm always jumping on to see how everyone is going. Well i must fly and I'll keep in touch you never know when we might meet on a track somewhere.... give our love to the club... thanks for all the great memories and the inspiration to start my own club.... My Jeep My ’96 ZJ Laredo Early in 1997 I became the proud owner of a ZJ Grand. I did well, it being a demonstra-tor vehicle stacked with extras and a price saving of many thousands of dollars. I was on cloud nine. It was my second 4x4, the first being back in the dark days of the Toy-ota FJ45 – 1979. This was completely dif-ferent. Firstly it was actually comfortable. Secondly it did not bounce along the high-way. Thirdly it handles like a car. Also it had power to spare. There were many things that made it a joy to own. Six years later it is a very different car. 170,000km’s do take a bit out of a car, but not so much out of a Jeep. Yes it has seen some service, been banged around a bit, but it runs like a dream, starts without any problems, does not burn oil, or leak oil. The fuel consumption is something to be proud of with today’s increasing fuel costs. I get 14.8l/100km, excellent fuel consumption, but got by making a few simple improve-ments. The truth outs! It is no longer a stan-dard ZJ. I have carried out a few modifica-tions. Firstly the limitations of the vehicle in standard form. It has very small tyres, probably the smallest in its class. The tyres are very good for the road but hopeless even on gravel. I have tried two other brands and believe that the BFG’s are the best. They have given me the longest life so far, about 70,000km and still have enough to see about another 15,000km. I have had one puncture as a result of driving over a small piece of steel near work, which cut into the shoulder of the tyre. When I changed to BFG’s I increased size to 30x9.5, an increase of 50mm over the stan-dard tyre, I changed the speedo drive gear to correct my speedo and am now as accu-rate as I can possibly get. It slowed down the acceleration slightly but not enough to matter. I can still give a Holden a good drag, but have trouble with a Ford. Next comes the ground clearance. The tyres helped but not much, I needed more. Why? Well I have bent my centre cross member several times (another story to follow). I also found that the lovely supple suspension does not like being loaded up very much. It drags its arse. So on went an OME kit raising the vehicle another 45mm giving me a total lift of 70mm over standard. Now I’m ready for anything. Not quite! The ZJ comes fitted with the QuadraTrak transfer case. A full time four wheel drive unit with just high and low ranges. This unit comes with a viscous coupling to allow dif-ferential drive to the front and rear at a ratio of about 40:60 front to rear. A good unit for road, gravel and snow, especially in the USA. However there is a weakness, it does not work in reverse. You have to engage low range, which locks out the viscous cou-pling, and the vehicle is in part time four

wheel drive. Not a major problem, but an inconvenience. The viscous coupling is also slow to respond when driving on mud. It would be nice to lock out the coupling as in low range for mud or snow driving. The major weakness is the low range engage-ment. The gear teeth engagement in low range is very marginal and as the box wears this becomes more critical. I experi-enced a lot of low range ‘jumping out of gear’ issues, some in very dangerous situa-tions. I pulled the box apart a number of times and after a lot of heartache got a re-placement shift lever, which had cracked. Even with the box rebuilt I experienced the same jumping out of gear. I was not going to spend even more money replacing the gear train to have the same thing happen again, so I bought a second hand Se-lectTrak and fitted it. The difference is as-tounding. It’s a much stronger selection linkage being cast steel and more positive in selection. It has the flexibility of being able to select 2x4, 4x4 part-time, 4x4 full-time and 4x4 part-time low. The best of all worlds! The interesting thing is that in 2x4 I experience a fuel consumption saving re-sulting in the above number. A good move. (I have got the Transfer box removal, strip down to component parts, rebuild and rein-stall, down to three hours. Not bad after lots of experience.) Now this cross member! An Engineer worth his salt would reject this cross member. It is the poorest design I have ever seen. For those of a technical bent, the member is formed from rectangular hollow tube. Noth-ing wrong with this! It then has a very large hole punched in the top and the centre por-tion is pressed in to allow the fitment of a massive transmission mount. This in effect makes it the same strength as a piece of sheet metal strapped across the vehicle. Yes it stops the transmission from falling downwards but any force, even the jack will force it upwards and the transmission into the floorpan. You guessed it I did this, a number of times. It also does not like being grounded on rocks of any sort as it gets pushed backwards. You should have seen it when I threw it out. End result I made a substantial cross member and bash plate out of 5mm plate steel. I can lift the whole vehicle on this cross member and it has served well. Fletch would probably say it is something to do with my driving style. (The WJ has a full box section across the vehi-cle, as do all the other Jeeps, why then not for the ZJ?) Enough of the negatives, it is a very good vehicle. I have added a few other items to make it a little more suitable for my needs. The compulsory Bull Bar, which has seen some interesting events not the least of which, was a rather enthusiastic drive across the creek at Omaru a few weeks ago. I dug the front of the car into the bank on the way out. With a loud bang and to the

delight of the onlookers I re-profiled the exit ramp, most of it embedded on and in my Bull Bar. That’s an interesting point, if you look at the front of the newer ARB bars they have two ‘air vents’ in the lower skirt. These act as mud scoops and very precisely guide any mud you happen to collect straight at the air conditioning condenser. When you clean it out you find two nicely extruded rectangles of hardened clay brick. How has the bar fared? Very well, it does have a slight curve now in the lower skirt, and it needs a slight amount of realigning but oth-erwise no problems. I have also got a couple of spotlights fitted that look good but I rarely use them. I also have two radios, AM and UHF. Why? Well they look good and the aerials on the front look like I mean business. I am trying to convince Barbara that I need a HF radio because I want one of the big thick aerials that make it look like I really do trips into the outback. Another must that I have fitted is a cargo barrier. It adds to the safety of carry-ing gear, especially recovery gear, in the back. Probably of more value though is the ability of packing the back up to the roof. With careful planning you can put every-thing you need, even for a two-week trip, into the back. As part of the camping con-venience I have fitted a dual battery set-up and an Engel fridge. The battery installation is quite good, but the consequences are somewhat inconvenient for the mechanic who has to change the oil filter. It can only be done from below, and it does not matter how you do it, you will get oil on yourself. Believe me, I have done it and it either gets onto your face or runs down your arm bring-ing back memories of my youth. At one stage I built a spare wheel carrier and Jerry can holder as swing away units on the back bumper. They were very effec-tive, until I reversed into an immovable ob-ject and a reasonable speed last Christmas and re-profiled the rear of my car. I have only another six months before the vehicle gets traded in, so it is not worth building new ones. Probably the most disappointing thing about owning the Grand is that there are not many of the vehicle specific accessories available to fit to them. You can not get a snorkel, a rear bar spare wheel mount which does not decrease the departure angle, long rang fuel tanks were difficult to get. The other issue, which has been addressed with the WJ, is the basic protection underneath. We got the road version 4x4 not the up-country one, with the raised heavy-duty suspension, steering, transfer case, and fuel tank pro-tection. The question I now face is what do I replace it with? Definitely not a KJ! Ian Gray

Jeepers Creepers A word from the President…..!J Our club is growing to nearly 100 strong. Even as I write this there may be another new member who has taken us over the century mark. This is good news, not just for the numbers but because we are a vibrant club with lots of activi-ties and new ideas for member in-volvement. One of those new ides which we have been working on for some six months comes from an idea by Michael Herrmann. This is where we can get a degree of inter club competition going and have some

simple fun while helping to devel-oping greater participation. The concept is very simple and in-volves all members belonging to one of four teams. Each member can contribute to the teams point score by doing the very things we are members of the club for, such as going on trips joining in on certain activities, com-ing to the meetings etc. It's really very simple, and should lead to some very interesting events down the track. We would recognise the achieve-ment of the most successful Team with a perpetual trophy. The Teams run themselves, not

directed by the committee although we would expect some degree of direction should there be a need for club activity in a certain direc-tion. It's a very good idea. It will be fun. We can join in or opt out - my preference is to join in. Some may be sceptical, some may be enthusi-astic—I am. Come along to the General Meet-ings and learn more while gaining points for your team. Toolangi Forrest Lives Up to it’s Reputation...again! The reports filtering in from the Toolangi 5Th Birthady celebration weekend indicate that a certain amount of Jeep Action was experi-enced, the last trip on Sunday saw the last Jeeps leaving Murrindindi Scenic Reserve around midnight after spending some hours winch-ing and recovering vehicles from a steep slippery slope. The usual problems occurred with some vehicles not having tyres that were roadworthy for the con-ditions and some drivers using to much aggression when tackling ruts, some having tyres depart from rims. Some very dirty jeeps have been seen around the suburbs showing the aftermath in all it’s glory. The night drive saw some Jeeps

obtain battle scars and the after party saw some rather sore heads appear from tents the next morn-ing. The forrest was very wet with plenty of muddy sections and slip-pery trails to keep every one occu-pied. Over 20 Jeeps made the effort to attend during the weekend and a fine campsite was set up with a nice BBQ lunch on Sunday. Various members stayed the nihgt on Saturday and others came up just for each days driving fun.

(Tony Whiteheads TJ Wrangler “Beast” covered in Murrundindi Mud)

The following email was received by Beryl this morning (Monday) Dear Beryl I would be most appreciative if you were able to pass on my thanks to the organizers and leaders of the Sunday afternoon trip in the Toolangi Forest. On the return from the trip, we fi-nally left the camping ground sometime close to 11pm and other than one rather concerned wife/mother, I have to Say that it was really excellent trip on which I certainly had a few Challenges and learnt a lot about recovery. I am not sure whether there were any who were wonder-ing whether they would be going home that day, particularly When one of JJ's front tyres came off the rim and he had no spare and had different rims/tyre sizes to everyone else. Fortunately a solution was found. The team work was excellent and as usual a lot of initiative was shown. I am somewhat glad that I had a reasonable level of experi-ence as you never know where a wrong turn will take you! Regards Bob phillipson

October July 14th

Melbourne to Mildura is straight forward, then we will follow the Darling River past the Menin-dee Lakes and on to Broken Hill. There are a couple of directional options to get to Mulga View Station, but once we are there we will climb to the top of the Stirrup Iron Range and set up camp. Views are stunning and there will be a track drive of 4 – 6 hours on top of the Range with plenty of photographic opportunities. Mulga View Station is about 80 km’s N/E of Blinman S.A. on the Arkaroola Road. The trip to Pinda Spring takes us into remote regions along creek beds and through spectacular gorges not normally accessible to the public. Our arrival at Leigh Creek will coincide with their Year Of The Outback celebrations of local food and wine. Moving south we will travel through Parachilna and Glass Gorges to Blinman which is an old copper mining town with cottages from the past still being lived in. Burra is another old town with historical links to copper mining.

Jeep Stuff—Recalibrating Your Speedo Avoid Speeding Fines with Bigger Tyres on your Jeep. With the lower 3 Klm leeway now inforce on speeding fines it is vital that you have your speedo recalibrated to give an acurate reading. When you install taller tyres on your Jeep the next job is to recalibrate the speedometer. Since the tyres are a different diameter your speedo and odo can be out by over 10%. There is a simple solution to this problem, your local Jeep dealership will be able to order the necessary part for you called a speedometer drive gear. This small plastic gear should cost around $20—25 The install should cost you nothing since it requires one hand tool and about 10 minutes of your time. Here is a list of common gear/tire combinations that should help you find what gear is right for you:

The Numbers in inches across the top represent your tire Diameter in Inches. The numbers down the left hand side repre-sent your axle ratios gearing. The numbers in the table actually represent the tooth count of the gear that you are going to replace yours with. Check your vehicles VIN number at your dealer to find out what axle ratio you have. Most 2.5L engines with manual trans-missions had 4.10 ratios. If your XJ had a manual transmission with the 4.0L inline six engine then you should have 3:07 gears in the axles. And finally, what most of us have is the 4.0L with an automatic transmission and 3.55 gears. All Cherokee's came with 28" or 29" tires depending on the package.

Tyre Size in Inches >

Diff Ratio

33 32 31 30 29 28

3:07 SG26 SG27 SG27 SG28 SG28 SG29

3:55 SG31 SG31 SG32 SG33 SG33 SG34

3:73 SG32 SG32 SG33 SG34 SG34 SG35

4:10 SG34 SG35 SG36 SG37 SG38 SG39

4:56 SG36 SG37 SG37 SG38

First step is to go to the drivers side of your Cherokee and crawl under the rear door. You will easily locate the rear drive shaft that connects the transfer case to the rear axle. Now the gear that we will be changing is in the transfer case. You will see a wire loom that plugs into the rear upper part of the transfer case - this wire loom feeds the vehicles computer the rotational speed of the output shaft and that, along with other in-formation, is used to compute your speed. >>>>>>>>Continued Next Page

Jeep Stuff There is only 1 bolt that we need to remove along with the retaining tab that holds the con-nection in place. Now pay attention to how the plug is oriented prior to removing it - you may wish to mark it right now for proper positioning when re-installing. This is not critical for the gears or other internal parts - it will make it easier to re-install the mounting tab and screw. Now wiggle nice and easy while pulling and the whole as-sembly should pop right out. The stock (orange in this case) speedo gear can be removed with a firm tug. The new gear will be installed with the metal end first. Make sure the part is seated all the way prior to re-installation. A solid push should be all that is necessary to install your new gear. The rest of the installation is just the reverse or-der of the steps that we have already taken. Now you are done and your speedo is right on the mark. You may wish to verify that you have made the correct adjustment. This is easily accomplished on the highway. Find a mile marker (they are spaced one mile apart) while travelling at 100 KPH and time the distance between markers. At 100 KMH you are travelling one Kilometre per minute so you should be right at 60 seconds be-tween markers. Original Article By - Chet Szymecki www.offroad.com

Club Radio Communications

When attending club trips you will need to be able to communicate with the trip leader and the rest of the convoy. To achieve this you will need a CB Radio. There are 2 types available UHF or AM ( a bit like FM or AM) The club will eventually use UHF exclusively, but this will take some time to achieve as most members cur-rently only have AM units. So the suggestion is that you consider the new UHF/AM Combo from Uniden or purchase a cheap AM unit and maybe a portable handheld UHF. The more expensive option is to have separate units i.e.; both a separate UHF and an AM unit. You can not communicate between UHF to AM. Many members already have both units installed or use a handheld UHF in combination with a AM Radio. It is also recommended that you get the best quality units that you can afford, especially the Ariel. The club uses the designated 4 Wheel Drive Club Channel 5 on AM and Channel 15 on UHF unless otherwise directed by the trip leader. You can install units your self or you can support the clubs supporters either Telstat Communications in Seaford or Time Plus Communications in Brunswick who will both give you specialist advice, install your radios and look after you on price as well. The club has now obtained it’s own UHF Hand Held radios for each club recovery kit. These will be used to assist members without UHF and for safety in re-covery situations.

For 50 years Jeep owners and their guests have participated in unforgettable weekend outings called Jeep Jamborees. With gear piled high and anticipation running even higher, Jeep 4x4 enthusiasts have trekked down long-abandoned logging roads, chased rocky trails through canyons, and explored forgotten mines and ghost towns. Rarely have they driven on paved roads. Rarely have they wanted to. In this golden anniversary year, we have 34 Jamborees scheduled that wind through every spectacular cor-ner of the country - trips that match every skill level and budget. Take a leisurely drive to see spring blooms or autumn colors. Or join those intrepid souls who challenge the Rubicon Trail - the most demanding 22 miles of off-highway driving in America and the place where Jamborees began. Fun-filled Jeep Jamborees provide unprecedented opportunities to discover stunning backcountry, chal-lenge your vehicle, and meet friendly people who are as genuine as the Jeep vehicle itself. In 50 years, some things never change. In 1952 Mark A. Smith and a small group of Rotarians and friends met to figure out a way to boost the sag-ging economy of their small northern California town. They soon hit upon the idea of staging an annual Jeep vehicle trek across the Sierra Nevada Mountains by way of the old Rubicon Trail. And, as they say, the rest is history. The next year, the first Jeep Jamboree saw 155 people take on the Rubicon Trail in 55 Jeep vehicles. In 1954, the Willys Motor Company, then manufacturer of Jeep vehicles, became involved with the annual adventure. Mark Smith gained his memberships in the Off-Road Hall of Fame and the Explorers Club of New York the old-fashioned way. He earned them - as leader of the 1979 Expedition de las Americas, a 20,000-mile, 120-day trip from the tip of South America to Prudhoe Bay in northern Alaska, and as the leader of the 1987 Camel Trophy in Madagascar. Since founding Jeep Jamboree USA in 1982, Mark Smith has become a consultant to the Jeep Division of DaimlerChrysler. He currently conducts intensive training for the U.S. Army Special Forces and other mili-tary agencies, and has been named "Four-Wheeler of the Decade" by the United 4-Wheel Drive Associa-tion. The Smith Family's Jeep Jamboree USA conducts more than 30 family-oriented Jeep vehicle trips na-tionwide and is truly a family business. As head of Field Operations, son Greg ensures that guides on all Jamborees are trained to be the most capable in the industry. Daughter Jill is president of JJUSA. Her mis-sion is to bring the fun, camaraderie, and excitement of the Jamboree experience to thousands of Jeep owners across the country each year. Driver Training Program FOR ALL MEMBERS The driver training program is now expanding to include refresher and advanced training for all members. This will be run alongside the induction program for new members. To ensure that all members are up to date with required driver skills the club now requires all members to attend a ses-sion at Omaru Jeep Adventure Park at Kilmore. This can be a simple refresher of basic skills or can be an advanced ses-sion that will include vehicle recovery and vehicle control techniques. Refresher training is especially important to mem-bers who have recently changed their vehicles. Members who have completed the training during summer can also come back and experience the course in wet condi-tions. Omaru is vastly different in winter with many areas becoming muddy and giving drivers a different experience to the easy conditions of summer. Members can also have partners do the training. Dates for Driver Training are June 2nd — Advanced Level 2 (Recovery and Control / Mud) New Member Induction and Refresher August 4th — Advanced Level 2 (Recovery and Control / Mud) New Member Induction and Refresher October 6th — Advanced Level 2 (Recovery and Control / Mud) New Member Induction and Refresher

TRIP REPORT ON THE OMEO BUSH CAN COLLECTION

WEEKEND. For Geoff & Barbara Miller and Maureen & Phil Cartledge their weekend started on Fri-day night 7th June Maureen & Phil had luck on their side as they missed all the traffic and were able to reach the meeting spot on time. After waiting past the meeting time, they rang Geoff & Barbara to find out where they were the answer was we are still stuck in the traffic along Toorak Road, it took them nearly an hour before they were able to meet up with Maureen & Phil. It was then onto Heyfield where two trailers were collected and then to Stratford for the night. Saturday 8th June. Collected at 8am by Geoff Sonnichsen and friend Karen, after stopping for petrol we were of the Strathfield to meet up with the other members on the trip & I had a change of vehicles travelling now with Steve. At this point we broke one of the club’s traditions that is we left on time 11.00am for Bruthen. We arrived in Bruthen in time for lunch where some went to the bakery for pies and vanilla slices or other goodies. One member said we have hot dogs for lunch sent his sons of the look for the water to boil them in got the water boiling and was heard to tell his sons that he forgot to take the hot dogs out of the fridge in the campervan. (First lesson always put your hot dogs in the car fridge before starting if you want to eat them for lunch.) The boys were still out of luck, as the bakery had no more pies so a quick dash was made across the road for a sandwich. After lunch it was on to the Bruthen Hotel for the first pick-up and a lesson on what we had to do. After taking off the side of the bin and un-hooking the overloaded bags, the question was asked to Geoff Miller ‘now what hap-pens’. Answer ‘the cans go into the trailer’ with that Geoff Sonnichsen empty the cans out of the bag into the trailer only to be told ‘no you have to put clips on the top to keep the cans in the bags’. (Second lesson wait for full instructions first.) After the next bag of can was put in the trailer correctly it was time to go our separate ways. Geoff S, Mau-reen & Phil and Ross and boys going to Omeo the direct route and Geoff & Barbara with Steve & I go to Omeo the long way via Buchan. Travelling along the Buchan – Gelantipy Road to Seldom Seen collecting cans as we went along, turned off onto the Limestone

Black Mountain Road until we came to a sign Wombargo Range Elev. 4650 Ft 1m. Mt Wombargo (5400’) it was 3.55pm and 3 de-grees. Asked Geoff if he wanted to stopped for afternoon tea but he said that we still had around 22 Kms before we reached Benam-bra I also looked to the right down into the valley and you could see the mist drifting down so we continued on our way. The view was fantastic, pity the others could not see it, we arrived at Benambra just after 5 meeting up with the others (who had al-ready unhitched their trailer at the B&B we were staying). There was a suggestion to asked the owner of the hotel if there were any cans they wanted to get rid off, he agreed to give us the cans. Steve, Ross’s sons. Geoff & Phil went to bag them up; Steve was the first there and wishes that someone else was. As he removed some of the rubbish on top off the cans a snake ap-peared not waiting to see if it was dead or alive he promptly picked up and tossed it away time - to put on the gloves. With the cans all packed it was back inside for a quick drink then on the Omeo. Time for dinner we all wandered over the road to the hotel/motel restaurant to be told that as the regular cook was not on they would have to check first. That was OK ta-bles were pushed together for us and we then enjoyed the evening meal. As we were discussing Sunday nights meal the waitress come over and asked “do you want to come here” “Yes” “Sorry but we are not opened” she then told us where not to go. Decided to wait a see want tomorrow brings. SUNDAY. Everyone up and ready to leave by 9:20am for Swifts Creek where we were to be joined by Brad, Fiona and Claudia. First it was off to the Swifts Creek High Country Bakery for more Vanilla Slices and food for lunch. Refreshments purchased left Swifts Creek at 10:15 for the Brookville Road until we turned at the Boomerang Spur then it was on to find the Haunted Stream. Along the way we passed one convoy that had 4 vehicles then it was time to reduce the tyre pressures. The first stream that we had to cross was a log stream and here there was another convoy of three vehicles waiting to cross. (Here comes lesson 3 when you take you pets with you please make sure that they are on a leash. There were 3 small – medium dogs running around and Steve hav-ing just come through the water when one of them run in front of the car causing Steve to stop suddenly until the owner called the dog to heel.) Our next crossing was a small wooden bridge that had a sign cyclists be-ware of gaps.

After this bridge we then climbed upwards when we heard a ‘toot-toot toot-toot’ high pitch sound, I asked Steve “was that a bird or car horn?” Steve went for a car horn I went for a bird. We continued along crossing the Haunted Stream until, a muddy section, Geoff went first Steve followed but about halfway through we got stuck in the mud. After several attempts of going back and forth it was time for a snatch first backways when that did not work it was a pull from the front. During all of this I decided it was time to get out and watch only to be told “Beryl stay there, put down the window” there was mud almost level with the passenger’s door. After sometime I decided that it was time to put on the boots and go out the driver’s door. Having surveyed the scene it appeared that other drivers had become stuck at this par-ticular ‘mud hole’. All on the ‘road’ again the next hurdle was a log across the track, detour required around it. Geoff went first after a few back and forth made it then us. We were lucky as Phil helped guide us and others around the log, I did notice as we were going around Ross stood next to this log and it was around chest high, a bit large for our chainsaw. Lunch stop was at Dogtown; another pair was there before us and had a fire going. Remember that I told you about Ross and his hotdogs, well he remember to take them out of the fridge had the water ready so the boys were able to have their hotdogs. After lunch some of us went down to the stream were Darren & Len decided it was time to investi-gate the otherside. After awhile Geoff, Bar-bara & myself heard ‘I’ve found a cave’ then ‘there is a second cave’ but as the lads did not have a torch and no time to investigate they were called back. Time to move on we continued on our way coming across the Stirling Track and then the Sunshine Wattle Track in between these tracks we kept hearing about the GPS read-ings 537m high, 732 & 834. At one time some of us stopped to look at the view while Geoff S checked out his front driver’s wheel (strange noises coming from it). Back on the road again remarked about the sun, always coming out when you are about to go around a corner or going up a steep hill. The road became more like a mini forest (all you could do was to follow the previous wheel marks) when we came across a nicely cleared area – thought it must be a new resi-dential area no trees, dirty roads already in place, and was that the office of the real es-tate agent there in the middle. From this point onwards the road improved consider-able – must be because of all those logging trucks.

Part way down the mountain side we had to stop as Geoff S was having trouble, whilst waiting for Geoff the convoy that we met at Dogtown (2 vehicles) went passed us claiming to have gone through the mud hole were Steve got stuck. But there was one thing wrong their vehicles were still nice and clean – no mud. Back on the road again this time Geoff went ahead and we did not see him again until our B&B, he needed to get to Omeo before the garage closed. Went through Swifts Creek at 5:20 and the sunset that we saw along the way was a magnificent display of colour, sorry you had to be there to see it. Arriving back at our B&B in Omeo about 5:45. After we all settled in Geoff M decided that it was time to bring on his surprise he gave all a certificate and a small Citipower torch just in case it might needed if we are lucky to go through the Bu-chan caves on the next Bush Can Collection Trip. Remember I told you that the waitress gave us information about where to buy our evening meals, her suggestion the MT Buller Pizza Parlour. Well we decided to try the local Pizza Parlour – 5 family size pizzas – simple you think. After about 1-½ hours the two Geoff’s came back, the oven could only cook one pizza at a time and they only had 3 family size pizza trays. After tea the two Geoff’s decided to play Barbara and myself to a game of 500 – B&B (the girls) against G&G (the boys) and I am please to an-nounce that the girls beat the boys. We did 55 river crossings, 1 snatch, saw 1 bunny and 2 emus. MONDAY. Time to head home we left Omeo at 9:45am with the temperature at 9 degrees. Geoff M took us along the Tongio Gap Road, a rough dirt track that followed along the Tambo River. Heading di-rectly for Bairnsdale going through there about 11:30, temperature 19 degrees it was on the Maffra for a 12:30 lunch stop. Before then Geoff M almost came in contact with two vehicles parked on the side of the road who decided that it was time to pulled into the

traffic, as Geoff was under the speed limited he could see what was about to happen and gave a blast on the horn. Not much open at Maffra on a public holiday but we manage to find a café that sold the famous Maffra pies where we purchased all that they had. Fully refreshed in more ways than one we then continued on to Heyfield as we were travelling along Steve and I could hear this banter between the Cartledge car and the Miller’s car. It went like this the GPS indicated that you should have turned two streets back. No it is further down. No the GPS shows you are going the wrong way. After a while Geoff turned right then travelled along this road until he came to a T intersection where he turned left and continued a short distance turning right into a property where we had to leave the trailers. No GPS required. Having delivered the trailers and I had changed vehicles for the third time we headed for home, Phil & Maureen showing us how to get on the Wellington Road via Berwick-Hawkaway Road and missing the South Gippsland Highway allowed Geoff Miller to drop me off at my place just after 4:00pm. Everything taken in to those members that have not done this trip please consider when it is next on. And if you go back to Heyfield where the trailers are dropped off you might be lucky to see the memorabilia that is there on the WW2 planes downed in the area. Weather was sunny a bit cold but fine. Great trip anyone who has not become involved with this activity should do it at least once, we only do it twice a year. I would like to thank Geoff Sonnichsen, Steve Barnett and Geoff Miller who were my drivers over the weekend. Geoff & Barbara Miller, Geoff Sonnichsen & friend Karen, Steve Barnett, Ross Mcgarvie and sons Darren, Ken & Len, Maureen & Phil Cartledge, Beryl Neate (all weekend) with Brad, Fiona & Clau-dia Human joining us on the Sunday. Beryl. Neate
