The Sweet-Bambridge trip took us on a 3.5
week adventure during May and June which
started from Adelaide by catching The Ghan
up to Alice Springs (with cars on board),
departed Alice Springs to the good old desert
country, west along the Gary Junction Road,
south on the Sandy Blight Track and east
towards The Olgas, Uluru, Kings Canyon and
back to Alice. For anybody that wants to do a
good desert trip and bush camping, this is
definitely one to consider as the Sandy Blight
Track was very scenic with great camping and
we only saw 2 cars on the whole track. Some
photos are attached (2 of 300 taken). For
anybody who wants to see the slide show you
may want to bring your sleeping bag/swag!!

World War 2 Jeeps NSW is NOT a formal Motor Vehicle Club, but more an “Association” of
WW2 Jeep enthusiasts, bonded together by this e—newsletter. It’s sole intention is to share
information about their vehicles, future displays, trips and events. It was founded in 1991 by
the late Peter Walker in an effort to bring together genuine users of the legendary Jeep.
Contact can be made with the current “Committee” as per the email addresses on the cover.
Joining information for new members is, a sense of participation and contribution to the
Association for your benefit and that of others, your email address for sending of the
newsletter, (this can be of a family member or friend if you don't have one—Don’t forget to
tell them!), a good colour picture of your Jeep along with a few words of your Jeep related
history, so we can introduce you via a “Member Profile”. If you have any Jeep related
restoration talents, please let us know and whether you are prepared to offer any advice to
fellow members. If you really like what we do, then a “Donation” towards our HQ development.
Members, their relatives, friends or guests are reminded that some Four Wheel Drive
activities, events or trips notified herein, can be extremely dangerous. Participation in any
activity, event or trip is entirely up to the individuals discretion and that no responsibility,
what so ever, can be held against any land holder, group or individual, for what ever situation
that may arise, in travelling to or from or during the course of that activity, event or trip.
If we are participating in an activity, event or trip organised by others outside of the
Association, we do so as a group of individuals at their invitation. Prior contact with the person
organising any particular activity, event or trip advertised herein is mandatory, to avail
yourself with the most up to date and correct information, as dates and itinerary can change
due to unforeseen circumstances.
Finally, views expressed in our newsletter are also individual and do not necessarily reflect the
Association as a whole. Membership lists forwarded from time to time are for the benefit of
those listed for contact purposes amongst each other only and are not intended for

Cliffs Say....
I hope everybody is looking forward to the Jeep Jamboree in September. I have attended a few Jeep
Jamborees and found them great value and very entertaining. As this one is actually in NSW it would
be disappointing if you did not have a go at this one as it is virtually in our backyard. Gadget is
organising a display on certain days and John Swane is leading some trips around the area. I have
heard that “The Blowflies” are swarming back to entertain all at the Jambo. As Mitch has mentioned
you do not have to go on any of the trips if you don’t want to and can just sit around the Jamboree
site, chat and socialise. But not all trips are 4 wheel drive. They have some nice runs to other
attractions, so go on, empty those moths out of the old sky rocket.
September looks like it may be fairly busy on the Jeep calendar as Mitch is coordinating a day at
Linnwood House (information in Standing Orders). Hope to see you there.
There was very little feedback received concerning the 2012 Christmas party. Gadget came up with
some good suggestions and they will be good for a camping weekend away trip. So, this year’s party
format is proposed to be at the Woolshed, but self catered, campfire Saturday night, a trip around the
area on Saturday and the usual auction, gifts for the under 12s and perhaps a Damper competition
(for those who are up to the challenge). I have heard about how good these Tamworth people think
they are in all things culinary… the proof will be in the damper.
We all realise that not much has happened over the last month or two, mainly because it is not
camping or 4WDriving conditions in an open vehicle. I am looking forward to warmer conditions
and hope some trips will be planned and executed, again, see Standing Orders!!!
Don’t forget if you have an idea for a trip, let us know and we can see if we can get it off the ground.

August 70 years ago, our Diggers were in the fight of the
war, on the Kokoda Track. The battle
commenced in July 1942 and was
effectively over by 22 January 1943.
On August 26, 1942 landings on several
beach heads on the northern shore by the Japanese to
strengthen their campaign were driven off, with the help
of the Americans, therefore saving Australia from future
possible invasion. This fact is celebrated by Ian Digger
Rodgers in the Bush Telegraph with a brilliant photo
compilation. Also, Ken Whyte has a special BBQ Day at
the Kokoda Memorial Walkway in Concord for you
Sydney siders (note its now on the 12th August)

Welcome to another edition of the News and thankyou to all who contribute stuff, which makes my job a whole
lot easier. Well we seem to be coming out of the winter doldrums with lots on the horizon. Please dust off the old
girl, then wash the Jeep and come along, especially if you are part of the majority and live in the greater Sydney
area. Jeep Action Australia Magazine has been steadily churning away each month bringing lots of interesting
articles of Jeeps old and new. This months (see cover on next page), is particularly interesting for us old farts,
with what the souped up boys of Tamworth have been up to, creating V6 Billycarts. Well done Neil Goodridge
for a great story on his new beast. Also there is a great report on the Classic Not Plastic event, which was well
attended. If you don't subscribe, then you should or at least head down to the Newsagent and get yourself a copy

2012 National JEEP JAMBOREE—Rydal—(just west of Lithgow!!!) Advertised elsewhere within and in case you have been living under a rock, we have been telling you for the last
12 months! Anyway, its getting very close and the Gadget Display Team have been in discussion with the
organisers, who are keen to have a good display of our legend Jeeps for the thousands of others that will be
there. Don’t be under any illusions, this show is HUUUUUUGE!
Plenty have baulked at the $150 entry fee (but you better be quick, as its about to hit $175, as the “early bird
special” is about to end), but rest assured it is not wasted money. It gets you entry for the four days, (Thursday to
Sunday), it covers your camping and provision of all the necessary facilities, it covers your dinner on the main
presentation night (Saturday) and entry to any activity that you undertake, whilst there. It covers entertainment
on most nights with our legendary Cullen Woolshed Band, “The Blowflies” playing on Friday Night.
Our program as far as the event is concerned, is we will be arriving like most on the Wednesday night (or we
might stop at the Shed on Wednesday night and head over first thing on Thursday morning, to set up camp. We,
as a group, have the use of a Shed, which the boys plan to set up as a various themed army camp. Thursday and
Friday is clear for all to go on the many drives and other activities around the local area, details of which will be
given to you upon paying your entry fees or when they become available.
Saturday, WE WANT YOU TO HELP! Call Gadget now to be part of the team. This will be on the main
“Show and Shine” Day, for all attendees, so there will be lots to see, lots of Jeep stuff on show and lots for us to
show off too. Sunday is another activities day and Monday is pack up day.
So get your skates on, register quick while the “Early bird” special is still current, then call Gadget for your kit

A post New Year trip is herewith mooted to
be part of the big Festival on Saturday 12th
January and join Don Marriot and his exploits
to impress the many ladies, who flock to this
event. Mitch is proposing a camping week-
end, taking a back road route out on say the
Thursday or Friday. Do something on the
Saturday, then take a couple of days to come
back. Entry to the Parade, closes soon after
the last one, so I don't think we can be
officially in it, but it could be fun for a couple
of days touring around out west? Anybody
interested in visiting county pubs?

LINNWOOD HOUSE MILITARY VEHICLE GATHERING
Sunday 9th September 2012
Late last year marked the start of the 70th Anniversary of the WW2 Jeep as we know it, the Willys MA / MB and the Ford GP / GPW. So we held an event to
celebrate this fact at Linnwood House in September 2011.
The event was a huge success, part in thanks to our sponsors of the day and also the support from many who travelled great distances to attend. So, we are organising another special day,
again in the very centre of Sydney where you can show off your pride and joy, meet fellow owners and enjoy the facilities of an Historic home.
This time, however, it will be open to ANY OWNER of a Military Vehicle, whether you belong to a club or association or not, by contacting –

Reserve Sunday 9th September and come along to Historic Linnwood at 25 Byron Road, Guildford, (close to the north east side of the Yennora Distribution Park), ENTRY will be FREE and open to the
public, so your family and friends can come along for a geek, check out the house and have a great day.
As it is open to all, we want to encourage period display of memorabilia and also hope, (if we can drum up a bit of pre-event response), to have a few prize categories from
our “to be arranged” sponsors. You will have to register to be eligible for the prizes.
Further details will be provided with your confirmation documentation along with a registration number.
Come along and be a part of this auspicious occasion.
Event is being arranged by WW2 Jeeps NSW In association with the Friends of Linnwood.
(For your information, the historic Linnwood, was built by George McCredie in 1891. The first Presbyterian services in Guildford were held on the property and continued until after George McCredie’s death in 1903
and the George McCredie Memorial Church was built and opened in 1905. The property was sold to the state government in 1921 and became known as the Guildford Truant School for Boys and in later years became ‘Lynwood Hall’, a Domestic Training School for Girls. Linnwood was listed on the State Heritage
Register in 2003. It is now managed by the Friends of Linnwood. All money raised on the day, by the Friends, is to be used for future restoration/conservation work on the house. Admission to the house is $3 and we do ask exhibitors to pay this as well. We do not charge exhibitors or clubs to attend on the day as we hope that by being able to advertise your presence at the
house, we can draw a crowd and this in turn will help promote your own organisation. The Friends do a sausage sizzle and also have refreshments available inside eg. tea & coffee, sandwiches and cakes. There are also Art & Craft stalls in the house on the day (sometimes the wives of exhibitors enjoy these!) and we have had in the past, an Australian Bush Band playing on the front verandah.) Please Note: Attendance will be solely at your own discretion and that no responsibility, what so ever, can be held
against any group or individual, for whatever situation that may arise in travelling to or from or during the
course of the days activities.

Description:
Three airmen died in a tragic friendly fire incident on 3 August. A C-7 Caribou was approaching the
Duc Pho Special Forces camp, about 20 miles south of Quang Ngai, when it was hit by a shell from a
US Army 155mm howitzer. The aircraft had flown into the line of fire and the shell blew off its entire
rear fuselage and tail section. There is a well-publicized photograph of the aircraft taken during its fatal
dive into the ground on the outskirts of the camp. Following this accident the Army and Air Force tight-
ened up their coordination procedures for air operations near artillery fire zones.

Hey Mitch—MOVE OVER DAWN,
Just thought I would have a little "brag" in relation to the July newsletter and the article from the Northern Recon
Group, the Horsfalls were lucky enough to have a month in the USA In Sep/Oct last year, as you can quite imagine
"Mrs Horsfall" put allot of planning into this trip and started with asking both the boys ...if you could do anything
in the USA what would you like to do, normal family's would get responses like Las Vegas or Disneyland, nope
not my family....Ned's request ( the youngest ) stated that he wanted to fly in a B-17 bomber ! I told him to do
some research and find out about it, a month or so later he informs me that you have to be over 18 and can only do
it at a planned airshow, there were none planned in the areas we would be in. So instead we had 2 days at the US
Airforce Museum ( Dayton Ohio ) and with a little planning found out that on a Friday if you book in advance you
can go on a guided behind the scenes tour through the restoration area. This was done and a great time had by all
with Ned having photos taken with a "semi restored" Memphis Bell ( his favourite plane since he was a small
child )
Anyway to speed up this very long story, we then went on to the McChord Joint Airforce/Army base in Seattle ( for
a guided tour by a expat Australian ) then had 16 wonderful unplanned days in a motorhome through Washington
state, Wyoming, then Utah and down through to Colorado. After making a overnight stop in a tiny town called
Vernal, Utah, we found on leaving the next morning that the "Sentimental Journey " was going to be at the local
airstrip for the day doing walk through tours for $5, off we rushed to the airfield to have a look, after taking lots of
photos and spending too much time going through the wonderful old B-17 and talking lots to the incredible crew
we found out that they were going to try and get the numbers for a joy flight that afternoon, the Horsfalls hands
shot up in the air to go and being there, it was no longer a problem with the boys being under 18.
Wayne and Ned were lucky enough to get the seats in the nose cone and Dan and I still thoroughly enjoyed a once
in a lifetime flight from the rear of the plane, the scenery over Utah at 1000 feet was beautiful especially through
the bomb doors as they opening them during the flight. There were many other very memorable things we did on
this trip but I think the B-17 takes allot to beat!
One of Wayne in his bright yellow T-shirt in the nosecone his "flying " position! There are some others that may or
may not be of interest, the flashy red car ( I know not military related ) was a 2008 Alfa 8C competizone (only 44
in the USA and over $300,000 worth ) we all got to go for a ride, I got the honour of doing 110 m/p/h done the
main street of Moses Lake Washington, the Deuce and a half with the twin 50 cals belonged to one of his mates we
had a great time in that shooting everything in sight, the machine guns were set up to fire a cocktail of oxygen and
propane that looked, felt and sounded like real ( recoil and all ) Ned had a great time being driven down the road
firing to his hearts content at the cars travelling on the interstate as he drove underneath, I pity the poor travellers
seeing the truck ( with muzzle flash ) coming towards them firing away. The truck tows a trailer made from the
back of another truck full of speakers and sound equipment, he plays Vietnam music, (he is a vet) when he takes it
to shows and county fairs, it is so loud that it makes your ears hurt. It usually is pumping out sounds of Vietnam
helicopters etc, funny enough the truck was quickly featured on Australian Hamish and Andy last year when the
did the USA trip at a combine harvester "demolition derby " in Washington. At that stage we had no idea we would
get to see it, all that fell into place after we got to America, it belonged to a friend of a friend of a friend of a
customer of ours! Great to have contacts!
The power wagons were all in one derelict unused petrol station heading from Utah onto Colorado. The things you
see when you don't have a car container to bring them home in. The last Deuce and a half was in Austin Texas
outside a army disposals store. Hope they can be of use, Daneen
PS the stupid photo of me is just before we took off .... I HAD always had a thing about not flying in silver
planes....suppose I am over that now! Well done coves, great to see you all had a good time. I guess a Dodge
M151 will be in the garage fleet soon?
