With six carefully planned obstacles, catering for both the standard and experienced vehicles and drivers alike - testing both the driver and passengers’ ability to work as a team while completing fun games for prize points. Some of the amusements included balancing tennis balls on a tray placed upon the bonnet of the vehicle, while driving over nature’s tricky pathway. The object of this was to try and keep all the balls on board.

The Jeep Club managed to transform a daunting wheel change into an entertaining two minute team work exercise.

Warm congratulations to the only female driver on the day, scoring a hundred points at obstacle four by not getting herself knotted in swapping the plastic bottles while driving around markers.

Further along the slow climb onto a beautiful overlook of Krugersdorp, the participants fed a carbon rhino by throwing potatoes at it and kids could express their puzzle building capabilities.

After everyone completed the environmental track they proceeded down to a well-prepared lunch. Leaving each of us wishing we had brought a lunch box to take some home. Many contestants first wanted to play a little more while working up an appetite.

KILLARNEY 4X4 CHARITY EVENT – SEPTEMBER 2015 (KZN)

Sunday 13 September 2015 Killarney 4x4 was the venue for Jeep Club of SA, KZN to entertain 3 old age homes from around the province, and this was done in style.

Approximately 35 guests arrived on a slightly wet Sunday morning, to coffee and what can only be described as a feast of cakes and savories to tuck into. They were welcomed by Leon who gave a quick rundown of the events to come. Then Miguel Da Silva from Meals on Wheels Community Services true to his word gave a 3 minute speech and gave us all some info on what meals on wheels achieves monthly with regards to numbers etc. Our seniors had a good old sing along to some old time favorites whilst the drivers got themselves sorted out for the guests of honors entertainment.

With 15 vehicles, all Wranglers! Lined up, our adventurous ladies and gentlemen were seated in vehicles ready to be shown how capable man and machine can be. The drive around Killarney 4x4 took approx. an hour to complete and on our return to camp they exited the vehicle full of chit chat about what they had just experienced.

Lunch and refreshments followed, of course some could not wait this long to go out and play some more. After lunch our guests received a certificate and a gift pack before leaving for home, with smiles still firmly etched on their faces.

To the numerous sponsors helping to fund the event with regards to transport, food etc. A big thank you, to Leon and his team, Glenda and her team, the people at Killarney 4x4 you all did an amazing job. To the people that missed the day; this was an amazing day to help other people in a way that is different, very different. Regards

Mark Lester

TIERKLOOF 4X4 NIGHT DRIVE – 26TH SEPTEMBER 2015 (WC) Night Drives are always fun as one loses the 3D perception at night. We can only see 2D and as far as our vehicles lights will take us. This means obstacles take on a whole new dimension from the driver’s seat. We arrived at Tierkloof 4x4 in Rawsonville to an overcast and windy evening as the sun slowly set behind the clouds. Drivers briefing done by Marius Cornelissen and all drivers had prepped tyres and dressed warm for what appeared to be a wet and windy evening in the mountains.

The route up was started just after 7pm as dark creeped in around us. We slowly crawled up to the first obstacle, a rock face which required deflated tyres and lots of traction. All the Jeeps through the first obstacle we started climbing up the mountain side. The group arrived at a tricky gross axle climb which Marius quickly guided all the Jeeps safely through and we were climbing again. We arrived at the look out over Rawsonville and watched the rain poring below us, but we were still dry as the wind swirled around us. Quick break to take in the views and all the lights in the valley below and we were on the route again.

It was not long and we were descending the other side of the mountain. Slowly as the loose rocks and steps downs felt a lot worse at night with limited viewing. We then arrived at the short sand section which obviously all had to attempt. You had to take a sharp right bend and then open throttle till you were at the top of the 50meter climb with sand spraying everywhere. We were all up even though some had to take a second or even third attempt. Driving sand at night with limited vision and vertically up a mountain does take a bit of courage and confidence in one’s vehicle.

Safely back at the camp site we all gathered for a refreshment and pumped tyres and slowly departed for Cape Town. Another successful and fun Jeep Club SA event. Thank you Marius for organizing and managing the event. Till the next time we meet on the open road. Written By Craig Parsons
