What a great start to the year we have had- both our Senior and Junior school have been to Waimarama this week to take part in the Beach Education programme, which teaches children about a number of safety issues at the beach. Our first School Mass will take place this Sunday 14th February at 9.30am. This Mass blesses our staff and students as they start the year. You are invited to attend a Parent Meeting on Monday 22nd February at 6.30pm in the school hall. Next Friday we will celebrate Art Deco with a picnic in the school grounds – come and join us in your Art Deco finery !!

It is the “Year of Mercy”. To celebrate this special year, on Fridays, the main doors of Madonna Maria Church will be opened wide from 8am onwards. This will be an invitation to all – parents, students, parishioners – to come in and pray before school. After the Mass at 9.15am Rite 1 Reconciliation will be available for those who wish to go. We will display the school’s “Year of Mercy” banner outside the church so that all who pass by will realize that something special is happening in the Catholic Church this year. Parishioners from the Parish of Hastings are warmly invited to attend. Teresa Neilson D.R.S.

St John's College students have settled to work in the classroom and have also been involved in reflecting on goals for the year. The new intake of year 9 students received a powerful Powhiri and are receiving continued support and guidance to settle in on their journey to become a ‘St John’s man’. The Catholic Character Committee planned an Ash Wednesday Liturgy and a great celebration for our College’s Commissioning Mass on Friday. Some great results from our athletes were evident on Thursday when we held our Athletic day at the Sports Park. Keep us in your prayers as we journey through the 2016 school year.

Sacred Heart College News Principal: Steve Bryan Convent Rd, Napier, Ph 835 3761

We were delighted to celebrate the success of our NCEA students at our Academic Assembly on Wednesday. This included students who were successful in Scholarship in Accounting, Biology and English. On Friday we appointed our new student leaders for the year ahead at a Leadership Mass. May God guide them and keep them in His care. Tabloid Sports went off with a bang, a very enjoyable day had by all. All year 9, new students, and their families are invited to a BBQ on Tuesday 16 February 2016, 5pm – 7pm.

If anyone out there has any old photos or treasures relating to Sacred Heart College we would love to have them for our archives. Please ring Kerri van Tuel in the school office on 8353721 (leave a message if no reply). Email: [email protected]

Book Rerview:

City of Joy - Dominique Lapierre

A story with a heart and showcases the true essence of love, caring and sharing in poverty. A beautiful and simple

read with many poignant, joyful and heart-rending moments. This is a famous book well worth reading, and we enter

the world of the poor in Calcutta, with all the heart break and unexpected humour and happiness, and the energy and

fulfilment of those who came to help.
