Blessing of Candles ~ February 2, 2013 The Presentation of the Lord or Candlemas Day commemorates the “Presentation of Jesus” in the temple and the purification of Mary 40 days after His birth. Candles have been blessed this day since the 11th century. The Blessing of Candles will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at the 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM Masses. Candle sets for home use will be available in the sacristy after the above two Masses only, then they will be available in the rectory througout the year. We ask an offering $5.00 per set.

Blessing of Throats The practice of Blessing of Throats on February 3rd originated with St. Blaise. As legend has it, a mother came to St. Blaise because her young son had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At St. Blaise’s command, the child was able to cough up the bone. We pray through the intercession of St. Blaise that God delivers us from throat ailments and from every other evil. According to the Book of Blessings, when the memorial of St. Blaise occurs on a Sunday, with a great number of people, the celebrant may give the blessing to all assembled by extending hands, without the crossed candles, over the people while saying the prayer of blessing, as we do for solemn blessings during the year. We will do this at all the Masses on Sunday and anticipated on Saturday evening (Feb. 2-3).

Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week, I was pleased to attend the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal annual report night for the 2012 and kickoff meeting for the 2013 campaign.

For 2012, we were 11th highest of the 230 parishes of percent over goal of 209.46%. Once again, we were second highest parish in the Archdiocese, after Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood, in the amount of money returned to our parish as a rebate:

$66,011.06. (We ultimately pledged and paid $202,107.00 to the 2012 appeal.)

I thank all those who participated last year. This has been a tremendous blessing both to our Archdiocese and our parish. We will use this money to continue to provide the many programs and services we do here for the good of all.

Next weekend we will hold “Pledge Sunday” for the 2013 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our goal and stretch goal this year have been reduced a bit: Goal: $95,687.00 (down from $96,489.30); Stretch Goal: $222,318.00 (down from $226,041.20). We always go well over the goal; the closer we get to the stretch goal, the more money is returned for our parish use.

Some of you have already sent completed pledge cards directly to the Archdiocese, totaling $13,635.00 as of January 21st. We will view the video during our Masses next weekend, and invite those who would prefer to make their pledge in the pew or who did not receive a card from the Archdiocese to make their pledge for this year. Those who received their cards in the mail may continue to return them directly to the Archdiocese as well.

+++

As mentioned last weekend, in addition to brief presentations at our Masses today about our co-sponsored Transfiguration Academy as we begin Catholic Schools Week, members of my 40th Anniversary Celebration Committee will be speaking with you about possibly taking an ad in the journal which will be published for this event in May, the proceeds of which will benefit our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Fund for assistance for those in need. I am very much looking forward to this observance of my Ordination Anniversary, and express my appreciation already for whatever anyone may consider doing in support of the journal.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Ezra was the religious leader of the Jewish community that had recently returned from the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah led the people back and then supervised the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. During a liturgical event, Ezra, acting in his capacity as priest, opens the scroll and interprets the law for those present. For their part, the people stand in respect for the words that they hear.

The author of the Gospel reading claims that, though not an eyewitness to the events that he recounts, his reports are part of the authoritative tradition of the church and therefore can be trusted. He then tells how Jesus returned to Nazareth, his hometown, and attended the synagogue service there. After reading a passage from Isaiah, Jesus announced that he was the one filled with the Spirit as spoken of by the prophet; he was the one who would inaugurate the hoped-for year of deliverance; he was the one who would launch the long-awaited era of fulfillment.

Sometimes the Sunday Scripture readings pass by barely noticed. The words read don’t get inside, perhaps because we are preoccupied or worrying over something. But every so often the reader and the words read become one in a way that enters into our heart. In the first reading, after being dispersed for so long, the people gather to hear Ezra read from the Torah how God saved them and how God wanted them to live. They listened for hours, tears running down their faces, as Ezra explained the meaning of the words for their lives. In the Gospel, Jesus also explains his fulfilment of the prophecy as all the people looked intently at him.

“Lord God, you give us your revealed word as spiritual food to nourish your people, and to strengthen your church as the Body of your Son Jesus Christ. May we recognize and partake of this food when we gather at the table of the Word. Amen.”

Transfiguration Academy Celebrate Catholic Schools

Beginning this weekend, Catholic Schools nationwide will celebrate Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year is “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards” Catholic education goes back deep into U. S. history - to at least 1606. That year, expressing their desire “to teach children Christian doctrine, reading and writing,” the Franciscans opened a school in what’s now St. Augustine, Florida. The First Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1852 urged every Catholic parish in the nation to establish a school. As a somewhat recently co-sponsored Catholic School, Transfiguration Academy joins with over 7,000 of our sister Catholic schools throughout the country in recognizing the outstanding contributions made by Catholic Schools to the Church, the country and the community. I would like to extend a personal invitation to all families of elementary school age children in our three co-sponsoring parishes of St. Mary’s, St. John’s and Ascension, to visit Transfiguration Academy during Catholic Schools Week. Our Open House, for all grades Pre-Kindergarten to Eighth grade, will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. If you cannot visit during Catholic Schools week, we would be happy to make individual appointments for you to tour the school and discuss the benefits of sending your child/children to Transfiguration. Call us at 201-384-3627. Sincerely, Mr. Tralongo Principal
