THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 16, 2020 PG. 2
Ministry Schedule for February 22, 2020 and February 23, 2020
THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 9, 2020 PG. 3
It is with great pleasure that our parish will establish a votive shrine to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the great missionary and lover of the poor and immigrants. Many parishioners became very interested in doing this after the scandal of denying her a place in honoring women of New York made by our city government. I too was moved by the argument: that it may be the case that our city government has rejected Mother Cabrini and her legacy of love and service to God and her fellow men and women in need, but we will welcome her. The subtle bigotry and discrimination against our faith and heritage implied in the rejection was a reminder that in many ways, our city has become hostile to people of faith in general and to Catholics in particular. Appropriately, to put up a shrine dedicated to her in our Church was in a small way to counter the bigotry with honoring the memory of this tremendous Italian American woman who served Christ in the poor that she met. In many ways, she was the Mother Teresa of Calcutta of her day, traveling the globe impelled by the love of Christ to serve Him in serving people in need. What a heroine she is! What an example to our young people, especially to our young women! She exemplified the difference you can make and the adventure you can have when you dare to follow our Lord Jesus Christ! However, in establishing this shrine, we reach beyond the headlines. We reach beyond the didactic value of her example for us and for our children. We put up this shrine to ask graces from St. Frances’ intercession. St. Frances is not just a memory, she is alive in the sight of God and she stands with the multitude of saints before God’s throne worshipping Him and praying for us. When we pray to her and to all the saints, we entrust to them our intentions and they present them to Christ. That is why we are devoted to the saints, because these heavenly friends and older brothers and sisters want to see us, their descendants in faith, be where they are now. It is my hope that this shrine not be considered a political statement but as an expression of devotion. To remember this amazing American saint. To remember her heroic witness to Christ in her prayers and passionate labor on behalf of the Church and those in need. Most of all, may this shrine be a source of graces for the people of Our Lady Help of Christians parish. That St. Frances will bless our parish with many graces and help us live out our lives with the same passionate love of Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church that she had. On behalf of the whole parish, I would like to thank everyone who donated to make this happen. Allow me to especially thank Mrs. Priscilla Carollo, who spearheaded the project and whose passion brought it to fulfillment. St. Frances was an Italian who became an American. St. Frances was a passionate defender of the poor and the immigrant. She founded countless institutions from nothing in order to achieve this. She inspired many other women to follow her example. But most of all, St. Frances loved Jesus and his Church, she prayed with passion, she sought a life of repentance and virtue, and she was rewarded with the crown of victory with all the saints in heaven. May we follow her example on earth so we may be with her forever in heaven.

PROJECT HOSPITALITY
We are looking for Volunteers
Did you know that our Parish Community has been
serving lunch monthly at the Central Ave Shelter for
Project Hospitality?
We have our two large outreach events (Thanksgiving
and Easter) and our Parish is amazingly generous with
both their time and donations.
Would you like to get involved more often? If so,
please contact the rectory.
We serve the last Saturday of every month and are al-
ways looking for donations of people to serve or do-
nate cooked food, snacks, drinks, etc.
We are Blessed to have a wonderful group of Parish-
ioners that help out every month.
Thank you for your support!
In preparation for
Ash Wednesday,
kindly bring in your past
blessed palms for proper
disposal.
Please place them in the
large baskets in the church
