John Deere announces new Precision Ag prod-ucts, including John Deere Harvest Mobile and John Deere Field Connect with a Gateway 3G upgrade and Wireless Radio Kit.

These newest updates to our ISG products provide our customers with more functionality and service, resulting in higher levels of machine performance and decision-making in the field, says Diana Reed with John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG). We introduced John Deere Harvest Mobile a performance and informa-tion enhancing system and improved serviceabili-ty to Field Connect with 3G modems and the Wireless Radio option.

John Deere Harvest Mo-bile is an easy-to-use tool that optimizes machine functions to improve grain harvesting operations. It also features data collec-tion and transfer to help operators make timely de-cisions with a simple, us-

able interface that makes harvest information easily available to operators and trusted advisors.

Harvest Mobile inte-grates with a customers equipment and technology, making the transition simple and easy, says Reed. Plus, the Interactive Combine Adjustment (ICA) function displayed in Harvest Mobile optimizes combine perfor-mance by guiding users to make adjustments when necessary.

Aside from setting ad-justments, ICA helps to im-prove grain quality, which reduces docking fees with the clean grain optimiza-tion function. It also helps operators capture more grain and reduce harvest losses. Harvest Mobile be-came available to order on August 31st.

The new Field Connect Gateway 3G and Field Con-nect Wireless Radio option allows users a wider range of serviceability when in-stalled in the field for re-mote moisture and envi-

ronmental sensing. All new units will be shipped with 3G modems in the Field Connect Gateway. Current Field Connect users look-ing to upgrade units from 2G to 3G can do so at a low cost and with a quick turn-around.

Upgraded 3G modems, available now for order, can reach more locations with faster connection speeds. In addition, the upgrade prepares field units for wireless connec-tivity, an optional feature that maximizes the use of Field Connect Gateway in remote locations.

The Wireless Radio kits allow producers to add up to eight radios to be used as field nodes for each gateway to provide more detailed field information, adds Reed. Customers can use the kits to optimize the number of nodes within one mile of the gateway, and can connect up to eight nodes per gateway with 3G coverage.

The wireless option is compatible with existing Field Connect Gateway sys-tems, soil moisture probes and environmental sen-sors. b

Komatsu America Corp., a leading global heavy equipment manufac-turer introduced the new PC45MR-5 and PC55MR-5 hydraulic excavators, two machines with tight tail swing radii, swing booms and convex sliding doors that hug the machine to help with work in tight spaces.

Featuring 2.19 litre, 38 horsepower, EPA Tier 4 final, 4D88E-7 engines, the new PC45MR-5 and PC55MR-5 use up to five percent less fuel than their predecessors with no loss to performance or produc-tivity.

The PC45MR-5 and PC55MR-5 are designed for versatility, manoeu-vrability, comfort and low operating costs, said Kurt Moncini, Komatsu Ameri-ca product manager. For most confined-area jobsites with construction, utility, landscaping or similar ap-plications, this is the right tool for the job, Moncini

    said.The new Tier 4 Fi-

nal engine is not only more fuel efficient, it has an after-treatment system that requires no diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The Komatsu diesel particulate filter (KDPF) and other after-treatment components are also specifically de-signed to work in har-mony with the engine for added efficiency and long life.

Additionally, the follow-ing features and improve-ments come standard on the PC45MR-5 and PC-55MR-5 excavators:Enhanced working

modes that allow op-erators to match engine speed and pump delivery to the application.

Wide service doors that provide easy access for ground-level mainte-nance.

A high-strength, X-track frame that deters dirt and debris build-up, saving

    operators valuable ma-chine clean-up time.

A tilt-up cab for easy ac-cess to hydraulic compo-nents and the back of the engine.

New auto-idle shutdown and economy modes help save fuel and re-duce machine wear.

ROPS and OPG Level 1 certified cab and canopy options provide a du-rable, secure operator work environment.

It would be virtually im-possible to come up with a more cost-effective first project: After picking up a brand new Terex Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane, the fifth unit of the model in the companys fleet, Trier-based Steil had it taken from the Terex factory in the small Palati-

nate town of Zweibrcken straight to its first work site at a residential area in the very same town. There, on behalf of the local util-ity, the Superlift 3800 crane lifted a 78-tonne concrete bridge that spanned the picturesque Schwarzbach River and joined what used to be two towpaths from

the days before river boats started using engines.

The residents of Zweibrcken are used to seeing large cranes after all, the town is a manufac-turing location for Terex crawler and mobile cranes. However, seeing a colos-sus in action practically in front of their living rooms

was another thing alto-gether. The residents were very easygoing about it and were even extraordinarily friendly and helpful when they had to move their cars out of the cranes way so it could do its work, reports Branch Manager Klaus-Mi-chael Speicher, who works at the Steil branch that was in charge of the lift Steil Saarwellingen.

Ultimately, the people of Zweibrcken were treated to an exciting spec-tacle: On April 14, 2015, the Superlift 3800 cranes first components left the

Terex factory premises and started their short trip to the work site. To get to the site, the trucks had to move through the rela-tively narrow streets in the residential area, which re-quired organizational skills and precision from the Steil team. The access road to the bridge was particularly challenging. It was like going through the eye of a needle. We had to plan everything down to the very last detail and figure out when each component had to be delivered to the work site, explains Ren Perlich, who is the leader of the Large Cranes Team at Steils headquarters in Trier and took over project management duties on the day of the lift.

The extremely limited space that was available was one reason why the company decided on using the Superlift 3800 crane for the project: On one hand, the units compact design helped it fit the tight work area. On the other, the cranes components are sized in such a way that they make it possible to ma-neuver even through nar-row roads, explains Terex Cranes Crane Handover Manager Thomas Beduhn, who assisted the Steil team during the project. Thanks to the units ease of assem-bly and the help of a Terex AC 200-1 all-terrain crane, setting up the Superlift 3800 crane proved to be as easy as expected within the scheduled timeframe of only three days. The crane was ready to lift the bridge after being configured with a main boom length of 42 meters, 253-tonnes of counterweight, and 50-tonnes of central ballast.

    Extensive preparationsThe special conditions

at the site meant expen-sive preparations prior to the lift. The bridge had large supply pipes run-ning through it, making it necessary to cut them in advance. The pipes were then temporarily placed across the river with the use of a lattice framework structure so that they could keep doing their job until a new bridge was put in place. In addition, the con-crete bridge featured mas-sive reinforcements that also had to be cut through and that made it difficult to calculate the exact weight of the bridge before the lift. That was another reason why we decided on the Su-perlift 3800 crane: namely

the fact that it would have plenty of reserve capacity, explains Project Manager Daniel Gdert, who works at Steils Saarwellingen branch.

The team carried out a trial lift the previous eve-ning so that there wouldnt be any surprises during the lift on April 17. To do this, the team made core drill holes through the bridge and threaded hoist cables through them. The rea-son this was necessary was that we couldnt determine the bridges exact weight in advance, so there was basi-cally no way wed be able to balance it perfectly, explains crane operator Thomas Klinger. In fact, the loads actual weight was determined during the trial lift: at 78 tonnes, it was only four tonnes heavier than calculated not a problem for the Su-perlift 3800 crane.

In the blink of an eye: a routine lift in 15 minutes

Once all the prepara-tions were complete, there was nothing else standing in the way of the actual lift on the next day: The team rigged the bridge again and the Superlift 3800 crane lifted the concrete struc-ture to the required height of 10 meters at a working radius of 27 meters. The crane then moved back 4 meters while under load and shortened its working radius by lifting the boom by 1 meter, so that the bridge would not hit any of the trees close by when being swung away. Final-ly, the crane operator set the concrete bridge down on a neighboring mead-ow. Thanks to the perfect preparation work carried out beforehand, the entire lift ended up being a sim-ple matter of routine that took a mere 15 minutes. The crane was also disas-sembled quickly, with the whole process taking only one day.

This lift just confirmed once again that the Super-lift 3800 is an incredibly versatile crane that en-ables us to respond to an extremely wide variety of demanding requirements with utmost flexibility, points out Perlich, whose company will soon be back in Zweibrcken to pick up yet another Superlift 3800 crane from Terex Cranes, bringing Steil GmbHs Su-perlift 3800 cranes count to a total of six units. b

US Radar Inc., a lead-ing manufacturer of sub-surface imaging systems, has introduced Version 5.0 of its Seeker acquisi-tion software which au-tomates several key ca-pabilities to help assure the accuracy of US Radar ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems.

Seeker 5.0 simplifies use of both the software and the GPR equipment by automating several crucial settings such as gain control, which ad-justs the gain of the radar signal to enhance under-ground target identifica-tion and layer tracing. Seeker 5.0 also automati-cally recognizes and con-firms the GPR systems antenna and configures antenna-specific settings such as depth range and encoder interval.

By automating the most important settings, weve made Seeker 5.0 much easier to use accu-rately and productively, said Matt Keys, US Radar

system engineer. Cor-rectly setting the gain level takes experience, especially continuing to adjust it while using the GPR system. Automatic gain control is especially helpful to simplify and streamline the process for GPR operators at any level of expertise.

Keys said the soft-ware also includes an industry-exclusive over-ride capability to enable experienced operators to manually set gain levels.

Regarding the soft-wares new automatic antenna settings, Keys noted, In previous ver-sions, the operator had to know which antenna the system was using and then manually enter the settings to enable the use of the specific an-tenna model. The new software takes the guess-work out of this process by automatically recog-nizing the antenna and accurately establishing all the proper settings,

which reduces the op-portunity for errors.Heart of the GPR System

US Radars Seeker Ac-quisition Software is in-cluded with each of the companys GPR units. The software provides a wide range of capabilities, beginning with its user-friendly, graphical display of data that presents clear, color-coded imagery mak-ing target recognition easy and accurate.

In addition to auto-matic gain-control and antenna set-up capabili-ties, the software offers such features as soil con-dition calibration, geo-positioning and back-tracking, data recording and storage, distance measurement, and high-lighting and annotating specific locations, posi-tions and depths.

Seeker software is com-patible with a wide variety of complementary software applications, including 3-D rendering, image pro-cessing, topography and mapping, animation, data-filtering and various data importing and exporting utilities. b

Oil production from the Organization of the Petroleum Export-ing Countries (OPEC) totalled 31.26 million barrels per day (b/d) in August, down 140,000 b/d from the July level of 31.4 million b/d as several member coun-tries, including Saudi Arabia, trimmed out-put, according to a just-released Platts survey of OPEC and oil industry officials and analysts.

This is the first time OPEC output has fall-en since February, but it shouldnt be over-interpreted, Margaret McQuaile, senior cor-respondent for Platts, a leading global provider of energy and commodi-ties information. The August total still puts OPEC exceeding its offi-cial ceiling by 1.26 mil-lion b/d and Saudi oil is still flowing at record levels.

The August esti-mate marked the first monthly fall in OPEC output since Febru-ary, although the total remained more than 1 million b/d above the groups official 30 mil-lion b/d ceiling.

Despite having rolled over the ceiling -- in place since the begin-ning of 2012 -- in June for a further six months, OPEC has no mecha-

nism for enforcing it as there are no individual country quotas. Fur-thermore, with Iran pre-paring to increase sup-ply once international sanctions are removed, the battle for market share that initially ap-peared to be focused on non-OPEC producers is now also raging within OPEC itself.

Saudi Arabia, hav-ing pumped at record levels above 10 million b/d since March, scaled back supply by 50,000 b/d to 10.4 million b/d in August. The kingpin producer, which drove OPECs November 2014 decision not to reduce output despite sliding oil prices, has given no indication that it is ready to abandon its market share strategy.

Smaller decreases came from Iraq, Libya, Angola and Qatar.

Libyan production re-mains at less than one quarter of its 1.6 mil-lion b/d capacity, with output slipping to just 360,000 b/d in August from 390,000 b/d in July because of on-going tech-nical problems at fields in eastern Libya and con-tinued blockades of oth-er key oil infrastructure across the country.

In Iraq, exports last month were slightly down on both July and

June because of a slight fall in southern exports and the on-going re-strictions on supplies via Turkey because of Kurdistans move to restart its own inde-pendent exports at the expense of the federal barrels it had been ex-porting on Baghdads behalf.

Concerns about the Chinese economy have helped drive crude pric-es downward in recent weeks. North Sea Brent hit a six-year low of $42.23/barrel last week, but has since clawed its way back to around $50/b.

Earlier this week, Ira-nian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said OPECs current policy had proved unsuccessful in marginalizing shale oil, a key driver in climbing non-OPEC production, and that member coun-tries should now be willing to reduce supply in order to boost prices. Iran, he said, saw $70-$80/b as a favourable price range for crude and would pursue this target within OPEC.

There is, as yet, no date for the lifting of sanc-tions, which will be tied to verification of Iranian compliance with the nu-clear agreement. The In-ternational Atomic Energy Agency is scheduled to de-liver its final report in mid-December.

OPEC ministers are next scheduled to meet in Vien-na on December 4. b

Urethane Supply Com-pany, a world leader in plas-tic repair and refinishing for vehicles, revealed its new 6066-CG Nitrocell Nitrogen Plastic Welder today at it booth No. 961 at the NACE/CARS Show at the Cobo Centre in Detroit, Michigan. Urethane Supply introduced the first commercialized ni-trogen plastic welder to the collision repair industry in 2006, and the new 6066-CG Nitrocell is the most ad-vanced generation of nitro-gen welder yet.

Nitrogen welding is the fastest and most efficient way of repairing dam-aged thermoplastic vehicle body panels, and the new 6066-CG Nitrocell is now the most advanced nitro-gen welder on the market. The 6066-CG is designed to generate its own nitrogen gas from shop air and re-quires no onboard air com-pressor. Compared to other welders, the new 6066-CG is lighter in weight, easier for technicians to manoeu-vre into position and fea-

tures an easy-to-handle welding torch that can get into tight spots without causing user fatigue.

Repair shops want to minimize repair times and maximize profits, and weve designed the new 6066-CG Nitrocell Nitrogen Welder to help them do just that, Kurt Lammon, presi-dent of Urethane Supply Company, said. The new unit will help collision spe-cialists reduce cycle times and increase their opportu-nities to do more profitable labour-based repair of plas-tic components.

Nitrogen gas welding cre-ates a strong material bond, because it eliminates oxida-tion of the plastic during the welding process. Using the shops own common air supply, the 6066-CG Nitro-cell employs a three-stage fil-ter to clean impurities from the air, and then uses so-phisticated membrane tech-nology to extract an endless supply of nitrogen. The re-sulting welding mechanism creates the strongest plastic welds possible in todays re-pair environment.

The 6066-CGs intuitive yet precise analogue instru-mentation features a control regulator combined with an output pressure gauge and a flow gauge to give the operator total control over the amount of gas used in the welding process. A low-pressure safety switch auto-matically cuts power to the heating element, protecting it from overheating if the flow drops too low.

Our flow meter allows shops to achieve and main-tain a high-quality, repeat-able result when repairing virtually all types of plastic components, Lammon said. Consistent results help shops meet key per-formance indicators, and that, in turn, drives more business from insurance companies.

The 6066-CG Nitrocell Welding System is also en-gineered with an integrated airless welder for smooth-ing out welds and repairing thermoset polyurethane. The system comes fully as-sembled and ready to use right out of the box. The unit comes with a variety of accessories and the in-dustrys widest selection of plastic welding rods.

The 6066-CG Nitrocell Welding System gives shops more flexibility in the esti-mating process, helps save total losses and gives own-ers an edge on their compe-tition, Lammon said. The added repair capability pro-vided by the new Nitrocell welder also provides shops with a bargaining tool to use when working with insur-ance adjusters.

Unlike common two-part plastic repair systems that employ separate mate-rials to create a bond and require a long curing time, nitrogen plastic welding re-unites the original plastic material to itself, forming a superior molecular attach-ment that can immediately be primed and painted.

Two-part repair systems are like putting a permanent bandage on top of plastic damage, Lammon said. Our nitrogen welding sys-tem actually heals the ma-terial, removes the scar and does so in much less time than two-part systems, and all at a fraction of the cost.

With the 6066-CG Nitro-cell, workers can also do repairs that are not possi-ble with adhesives, such as mounting tabs, grille bars, high-stress areas, flexible tabs and fender liners. It is suitable for virtually all plastic component repairs.

The 6066-CG Nitrocell Nitrogen Welders features also include a melt-proof silicone and fiberglass braided hot air welder hose; a heavy-duty, Amer-ican-made welding cart with built-in holders for heating elements; tools and supplies; and an air mani-fold with auxiliary outlets for air tool attachments. The nitrogen generator can also be used to fill tires or supply gas to other appara-tus requiring nitrogen.

The standard 6066-CG Nitrocell Nitrogen Welder product package includes the following: one EZ Weld 3.0 Hot Air Plastic Welder; one Nitrocell Nitrogen Gen-erator; one tear drop airless welding tip; one standard airless welding tip; one 10-inch (25 cm) x 10-inch (25 cm) x 3/32-inch (2.4 mm) polypropylene sheet; one stainless steel wire brush; one roll of aluminium tape, 2-inch (5 cm) x 10-yards (9.1 m); and one hand seamer tool as well as a variety of polyurethane, polypropyl-ene, ABS, TPO, nylon and polycarbonate welding rod starter rolls. b

On Saturday, August 29, the Lower Mainland and parts of Vancouver Island were hit with a significant windstorm. It was quick and intense, and surprised national weather agencies.

710,000 customers in the Lower Mainland and parts of Vancouver Is-land lost power at some point on the weekend due to this storm this represents half of all BC Hydro customers in these regions. It was the largest

outage in BC Hydro his-tory. Drought-weakened trees fell across hundreds of our power lines, caus-ing widespread outages.

To give you a sense of the damage sustained in the storm over the course of three days, crews replaced approximately 200 power poles and 500 broken cross-arms on pole-tops, fixed 25 damaged transmission cir-cuits and replaced 10,000 metres of wire and more than 1,200 pieces of electri-

cal equipment. We dedicated the full re-

sources of our company to this effort. This includes BC Hydro staff and contractors based in the Lower Main-land in the emergency cen-tre and in the field. Addi-tional crews were brought in to support restoration efforts from Prince George, Kamloops, Smithers, Ter-race, Courtenay, Fort St. John, Nanaimo, Port Alber-ni, Victoria, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, Campbell

River, Duncan, Qualicum, Salmon Arm, West Kelow-na and Vernon.

Crews responded to 2,400 trouble calls or individual work orders (in a normal month there are 2,000 for the entire prov-ince). Over a span of 72 hours, power was restored to over 700,000 custom-ers. Never before have we restored power to so many customers so quickly.

Through all of this, we recognize that any loss of power is difficult for our customers and an ex-tended outage makes it even more challenging. After every major storm, we step back and take a look at how we did with our storm response and procedures, and assess anything we can do better.

As proud as we are of

the work of our crews, the failure of our website, the go-to place for vital outage updates for customers, was a huge frustration; not only for those endur-ing extended outages, but for us, too. In a power out-age, its often the most im-portant thing for custom-ers to simply know whats happening and what you can expect next. With bchydro.com unavailable for extended periods, we werent able to provide you with the best, most timely information.

I assure you were in-vestigating the root cause of our websites failure and well take steps to ensure this doesnt happen again. I also want to reassure you that having our website down didnt in any way affect our outage response

times, which is operated through a different system.

I encourage you to take the time to ensure that youre prepared in case of future outages and other emergencies including earthquakes, you have well-stocked emergency kits and plans for your families and businesses. And if you come across a fallen power line, it should be considered live. Stay 10 metres back about the length of a bus and call us at 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766) to report the exact location.

On behalf of all of us at BC Hydro, I want to thank you for your patience and support as we worked through these power out-ages. We sincerely appre-ciate it. b
