of this initiative fulfills a commitment made under the 2011 United States-Canada Beyond the Border Action Plan.

This first, joint U.S.-Canada binational plan shows that our col-laborative approach to border planning, which includes feedback from our local partners, will serve both of our coun-tries well and ensures that we are working to-gether on our common interests, said Secre-tary LaHood.

An integrated, bilat-eral approach to border investment is critical to both the U.S. and Canadian economies, said DHS Secretary Na-politano. The BIIP of-fers enhanced security along our shared U.S.-Canadian border, while reducing wait times at major border crossings, increasing the flow of traffic across the bor-der while ensuring safe and secure trade and travel.

Modern border crossings are essential to trade, which is why the Border Infrastruc-ture Investment Plan and the collaborative

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, along with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napoli-

tano, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastruc-ture and Communities, Minister of the Econom-

ic Development Agency of Canada for the Re-gions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovern-mental Affairs, and the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safe-ty announced the first ever joint United States-Canada Border Infra-structure Investment Plan (BIIP). The de-velopment and release

relationship with our American neighbours are so important, said Minister Lebel. Our government is invest-ing in border crossings, ports and gateways to reduce wait times, in-crease trade and create jobs.

The BIIP is an inter-agency and binational planning mechanism developed to establish a mutual understanding of recent, ongoing, and potential border infra-structure investments. It outlines the approach that the United States and Canada will take to coordinate plans for physical infrastructure upgrades at small and remote ports of entry. This initiative will be updated and dissemi-nated annually.

Our government, in collaboration with the United States, is com-mitted to enhancing our security and economic prosperity through sig-nificant investments at key crossings, said Minister Toews. These investments will reduce border delays, speed up trade across our shared border and will allow

the Canada Border Ser-vices Agency to focus on facilitating the flow of low risk people and goods while keeping the border open to legiti-mate trade and travel.

The BIIP, along with other initiatives under Beyond the Border: A Vi-sion for Perimeter Secu-rity and Economic Com-petitiveness, is designed to benefit the integrated economies of the Unit-ed States and Canada, which depend on the flu-id movement of commer-cial and non-commercial traffic across our border. Its release follows recent announcements by the Government of Canada of significant invest-ments at four initial pri-ority land ports of entry identified by Canada in the Beyond the Border Action Plan: Lacolle, Quebec; Lansdowne, On-tario (Thousand Islands Bridge); Emerson, Mani-toba; and North Portal, Saskatchewan. Modern-ization of major border crossings will reduce wait times, increase re-liability of just-in-time shipments, and decrease fuel consumption and

Evraz Place was a hotspot in Regina as 2,300 delegates from across North America converged for the 21st annual Willis-ton Basin Petroleum Con-ference (WBPC). Hosted by the Saskatchewan Geo-logical Survey and the Pe-troleum and Technology Research Centre (PTRC), the event is a trade show and technical conference for delegates from all ar-eas of the oil industry including geologists, en-gineers, company execu-tives, service companies, software/data vendors and oilfield safety equip-ment providers.

Saskatchewan is a leader on a national and international front, Ener-

gy and Resources Minister Tim McMillan said. Last year we broke another re-cord for oil production and we are confident that Sas-katchewan has not only the resources but also the busi-ness climate to maintain this momentum now and into the future.

Throughout the confer-ence, delegates also had the opportunity to visit more than 300 exhibitor booths and equipment displays both inside and outside the Credit Union Eventplex. The technical program ran on May 1 and 2 and addressed several topics including explora-tion and development, en-hanced oil recovery and emerging technologies. b

EnerDel, Inc., a lead-ing manufacturer of ad-vanced Lithium-ion bat-teries and energy storage systems, has completed the commissioning of a 5MW Energy Storage System (ESS) used as part of Portland General Electrics (PGE) Salem Smart Power Project, which is part of the Pa-cific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Proj-ect. EnerDels solution is comprised of five (5) 1MW systems featuring EnerDels SP90-590 that were installed, tested and commissioned on-site in Salem, Oregon over the last several months.

EnerDel is excited to be working with PGE to demonstrate how cus-tomers can benefit from the use of smart grid systems and technolo-gies that incorporate en-ergy storage for renew-able resources, back-up power and peak shav-ing, stated EnerDel CEO David Roberts. In col-

laboration with the other partners involved with the project, we support PGEs efforts to demon-strate the value that is afforded by smart grid solutions. Ultimately, grid security and reli-ability increases while decreasing energy costs and promoting a clean-er environment. PGEs decision to integrate re-newable energy sources into the grid using En-erDel Li-Ion technology demonstrates forward thinking and affirms the adaptability and safety of this technology.

EnerDels ESS includes 1,440 rack-mounted lithium-ion battery mod-ules monitored by an ad-vanced battery manage-ment system to support a 5MW inverter array consisting of twenty (20) 250kW/62.5kWhr chan-nels rated at 600VDC. Each channel will contain an independently-operat-ed battery management system connected to a

250kW inverter. This con-figuration delivers a high level of control, flexibility and safety.

The ESS is part of the larger PGE power system comprised of five large breakers that bring power in and out of the building allowing the inverters to change the electricity from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) dur-ing the charging cycle. The direct current elec-tricity is stored in EnerD-els ESS to be used during peak demand periods, or, as back-up power when there is a loss of utility supply. The same power system and inverters con-vert the clean DC to AC as the grid demands. This reserve electricity can be stored for several weeks at a time and drawn from to support the needs of more than 3500 residen-tial and business custom-ers thereby allowing PGE adequate time to make re-pairs and restore the grid.

The project will im-prove system reliability, support renewable re-source integration and decrease peak-price risk. PGE expects the project to be operational for a minimum of 10 years. b

With its latest product release, HGG has, once again, developed a ma-chine that provides cus-tomers with a machine that will drastically op-

timize their production process. The SPC-RB pipe cutting machine fills the long awaited gap between the perfect cut for opti-mal weld preparation and

the answer to the logistic challenges in pipe han-dling companies are fac-ing nowadays.

By combining two smart concepts, HGG is now able to offer the best of both worlds in CNC Pipe Cutting. The ma-chine incorporates the logistic advantages of a roller bed type machine

with accuracy of a chuck driven machine. Using this highly intelligent sys-tem, the SPC-RB provides the long awaited accurate and fast solution for pipe works, steel structures and offshore structures. In the past, companies had to choose between one of those aspects.

Since safety regula-tions are becoming strict-er, companies are looking for safer ways to cut their piping. The SPC-RB incor-porates a smart logistic system that makes the use of cranes redundant.

Besides this logistic system, the SPC-RB pro-vides its users, among many others, with three main features:Accuracy

The machine is de-signed to compensate any pipe distortion through creep and slip compensa-tion. An on-the-fly mea-surement system directly communicates with the machine and adjusts the cutting path when neces-sary. The independently adjustable roller wheels minimize slip for even more accurate cutting. Productivity

The combination of a roller bed and a chuck

enables the user to com-bine high quality and high speed cutting. Fur-thermore, the roller bed ensures automated in- and output of material. Another great impact on productivity is the ability to feed out cut parts while continue cutting.Simplicity

Although the SPC-RB is equipped with sophisti-cated software, HGG was able to keep the machine very simple to operate. Just one clear, intuitive touch screen enables one operator to operate the complete machine.

Since its introduction, the SPC-RB has brought improved accuracy and logistics to many compa-nies worldwide, already. One of the early adapt-ers that helped HGG to fine-tune the machine is American company Ex-terran, located in Hous-ton, Texas. Ricky Cruz, Value Stream Manager at Enerflex: When you do a manual cut, there is not always a perfect bevel; now that we have the SPC-RB the room for error is gone. So you take the excuse away and you have a process that is re-petitive every time that

you cut a vessel. Fully customizable

Another important buying aspect is the fact that the machine can be fully customized to fit the customers requirements. On the software side, the machine can be equipped with special connections to CAD software and many special macros to cut industry-specific pro-files. On the hardware side, the machines can be customized with several in- and outfeed systems and health & safety sys-tems.Constant innovation About HGG

Together with HGG Profiling Contractors, HGG Profiling Equipment forms the HGG Group. Both companies are fully dedicated to 3D Profiling. HGG Profiling Contrac-tors is focused on provid-ing cutting services and uses machinery from sis-ter company HGG Profil-ing Equipment. Both on the equipment and con-tracting division, HGG is continuously innovating its products and services with the aim to decrease customers costs by im-proving cutting quality, logistics and software. b

Representatives from all levels of government re-cently gathered at the Stur-geon Heights Community Centre in Winnipeg to cel-ebrate the Citys first-ever civic building to receive LEED Gold Designation. LEED is the most recog-nized green building rating system in North America.

Our Government is proud to have supported this successful project and would like to congratu-late the Sturgeon Heights Community Centre for this great achievement, said the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charles-woodSt. JamesAssini-boia. Investments in infra-structure projects like this one create jobs, support economic growth, and con-tribute to Canadas long-term prosperity.

The Sturgeon Heights Community Centre is an excellent example of how devoted staff and an in-novative team can create

public space that not only considers the community, but also the environment as a whole, said Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux. The result is an energy efficient building with enhanced indoor air quality, natural light and sophisticated technolo-gies.

This community cen-tre has not only become the jewel of our neigh-bourhood, but a sustain-able jewel that the entire city can be proud of, said Councillor Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands), Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services. Its a real honour for this facility to not only receive this recognition, but to be the first civic building in Winnipeg to achieve this status.

We are proud to be part of a team that has pur-sued sustainable excellence and recognized the value of the LEED process since day one, said Jamie Kozak,

    Associate Architect with Prairie Architects.

A little over a year ago, the City celebrated the completion of an impor-tant project, the amalgama-tion of the Silver Heights and Sturgeon Creek Com-munity Centre into a new 18,000-square-foot, energy-efficient facility. The inte-grated facility makes ex-tensive use of natural light. Where needed, energy effi-cient lighting and occupan-cy sensors throughout the building are helping to re-duce energy costs. Drought tolerant plants, low-flow faucets, and other features mean this facility will use roughly 50 percent less wa-ter compared to a conven-tional building. As well, 84 percent of construction waste and materials from deconstructing the existing building were recycled or salvaged.

The Government of Canada committed $1.5 million under the Infra-structure Stimulus Fund toward the eligible costs of this project while the Government of Manitoba contributed $1.63 million, and the City of Winnipeg contributed $2.5 million toward this $5.63-million project. b

Globally, the largest for-est wildfire in recent history was the Black Drag-on Fire in China, which broke out in May 1987 along the Amur River, the boundary between eastern Siberia and Chinese Man-churia. This fire burned approximately 18 million acres (72,843 sq km) of pristine conifer forest - an area almost one and one half times that of the prov-inces of Prince Edward Is-land, Nova Scotia and New

Brunswick combined. The worst of this conflagration took place between the evening hours of May 7 and the early morning hours of May 8, when it took most of its victims: more than 200 dead and 250 burned and injured.

The single worst wild-fire in U.S. history, in both size and fatalities, was the Great Peshtigo Fire in northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michi-gan that burned 3.8 million

acres (15,378 sq km) and killed at least 1,500 during the week of October 8-14, 1871. After a hot, dry sum-mer strong, warm autumn winds fanned the fires out of control. Fire tornadoes were reported at several locations, and the fire be-came so hot that people taking refuge in rivers were boiled to death. Unattend-ed fires at logging camps in the area are believed to have caused the fire.

In October 1918, the massive Cloquet Fire in northern Minnesota is be-lieved to have been caused by sparks from the local railroad. This forest wild-fire was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. his-tory in terms of the number of lives lost in a single day. In total, 453 lives were lost and 52,000 people were in-jured or displaced, 38 com-munities were destroyed, 250,000 acres (1,000 sq km) were burned, and 73 million dollars in property damage was suffered.

Here in Canada, the Great Miramichi Fire in

October 1825, devastated forests and communities throughout much of north-ern New Brunswick. It blackened almost 4 million acres (16,000 sq km) and ranks amongst the three largest forest fires ever re-corded in North America. As this fire raged out of control it destroyed about one third of the homes in Fredericton, but the main devastation took place about 160 kilometers to the northeast.

On the evening of Octo-ber 7, 1825, the firestorm roared through Newcastle, now part of the City of Mi-ramichi, and in less than three hours reduced the town to ruins. To escape the blaze, many residents took refuge with livestock and wildlife in the Mi-ramichi River. The loss of human life in and around Newcastle alone reached 160 and included all pris-oners in the local jail. Elsewhere, the totals were likely higher, given the number of lumbermen in the forests at the time. The

cause of the blaze is not known, but was likely the result of human activity.

Ontario is more than one million square kilo-metres in size, of which 85 percent is covered by a va-riety of forest types. Wild-fires have always been, and will continue to be, a real threat to the forest and its human and animal in-habitants.

The province has seen a number of destructive wildfires over the years. In 1910, a forest fire in the Baudette-Rainy River area killed 42 people and scorched over 308,000 acres (1,250 sq km). The next year, the infamous Porcupine fire, one of the largest in Ontarios histo-ry, burned almost 500,000 acres (2,023 sq km), in-cluding the towns of Tim-mins, South Porcupine and Cochrane. The estimated death toll was 73. In 1916, a fire in the Matheson area burned the villages of Kelso, Val Gagne, Porquis Junction and Iroquois Falls, taking 244 lives. The Haileybury fire in 1922 killed 43 and destroyed 6,000 homes. Source: On-tario Ministry of Natural Resources

In recent history, and seared into our memories, are the 2011 Flat Top Com-plex Wildfire in Alberta and the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park in British Columbia. The Okana-gan Mountain Park Fire was caused by a light-ning strike. Before it was controlled, it burned over 63,258 acres (256 sq km), destroyed or damaged 238 homes, caused the evacua-

tion of over 33,000 people and wiped out 12 historic wooden railway trestles in Myra Canyon. (Source: BC Wildfire Management)

Three simultaneous wildfires, which became known as The Flat Top Complex Wildfire, com-bined and destroyed over 500 residences and com-mercial buildings in and around Slave Lake and re-sulted in the evacuation of almost 15,000 people. Un-like the Okanagan Moun-tain Park fire, this fire is be-lieved to have been human caused. (Source: Alberta Ministry of Environment)

The most common cause of wildfires varies throughout the world. In Canada and northwest Chi-na, lightning is the major source of ignition. In the United States, the source of wildfires can be traced to both lightning strikes and human activities. In other parts of the world, human involvement is a major contributor.

Wildfires present a challenge for forest man-agement because they have the potential to be at once harmful and ben-eficial. On the one hand, wildfires can threaten communities and destroy vast amounts of timber re-sources, resulting in costly losses. On the other hand, these fires are a natural part of the forest eco-system and important in many parts of Canada for maintaining the health and diversity of the forest. bCopyright REMco Rock En-gineered Machinery Com-pany 2013. FACTS ABOUT WILDFIRES IN CANADA

Canada has about 10% of the worlds forests. Each year over the last 25 years, about 8300 for-est fires have occurred. The total area burned var-ies widely from year to year, but averages about 5.6 million acres annually.

Only 3% of all wildfires that start each year in Can-ada grow to more than 500 acres in area. How-ever, these fires account for 97% of the total area burned across the country.

Fire suppression costs over the last decade in Canada have ranged from about $500 million to $1 billion a year. (Source: Natural Resources Canada)

A wildfire is one of the most powerful forces in na-ture, as anyone who has watched its frightening fury can attest. Be careful working or playing in or near the forest or dry grasslands and be sure to report wildfires to the local authorities.

    Front Page Story

Wildfire!Every year, countries, territories, states and provinces around the globe spend billions of dollars in forest wildfire prevention, management, control and extinguishment. This cost is second only to the loss in value of marketable timber as well as public and private property to say nothing of the loss of human life... to which a value cannot be placed. Thanks to Victory Gar-den Initiative, community groups, volunteers and the sponsorship and sup-port of CASE Construc-tion Equipment, Mil-waukee residents can enjoy vegetables grown in their own neighbour-hoods. Its all part of the Victory Garden Blitz, an event that involved the installation of 500 new vegetable gardens throughout the City of Milwaukee from May 11 through May 25. Nearly twice as many gardens were installed this spring when compared with last years effort.

The Victory Garden Blitz is a great example of people coming together to help improve the com-munity, while at the same time, taking meaningful steps to create a more ecologically sustainable future, said Jim Hasler, Vice President, CASE Construction Equipment-North America. Were thrilled to participate in

this project and we con-gratulate everyone who contributed their time and effort to make the goal of 500 gardens a reality. Its a remarkable accomplish-ment.

CASE Construction Equipment is a division of CNH Global N.V., a subsidiary of Fiat Indus-trial, S. p. A. For its role in the Blitz project, CASE Construction Equipment donated a CASE SV185 medium-frame skid steer loader, a machine opera-tor and event signage all of which is in addition to CNHs financial spon-sorship of the project. A total of 15 Fiat Industrial employees and their fam-ily members and friends volunteered a day of la-bour to the effort, which included the construction and filling of raised gar-dens across Milwaukee.

We believe a commu-nity-based, sustainable, nutritious, and socially just food system can be created if we grow some

of our own food in the city, said Victory Gar-den Initiative Director Gretchen Mead. We couldnt do it without the support of CASE Con-struction Equipment.

Throughout the project, gardens were installed in yards, businesses, schools, churches, and commu-nity spaces. A variety of volunteer and neigh-bourhood groups helped construct, fill and plant the gardens, culminat-ing in an effort that feeds Milwaukee residents with fresh, organic food. Materials for each gar-den were made possible by a $150 donation or sponsorship.

We are thankful to have CASE Construction Equipment as partners in the food movement in Milwaukee, added Mead. Installing 500 new gardens is truly something incredible.

Victory Garden Initia-tive builds communities who grow food, reintegrat-ing human and food ecol-ogy, advancing a resilient food culture from soil, to seed, to plate, to soil. Find out more a www.victo-rygardeninitiative.org. b

Weve been working towards an OEM strategy for our solar LED lighting systems after receiving multiple requests from OEMs for a solar solution that worked with their

luminaires, states Bruce Cousins, Carmanah CEO. Lighting manufactur-ers are seeking a reliable partner to supply high performance solar en-gines, so they can partic-ipate in the growing mar-

ket for off grid lighting. Carmanahs technology is ready and our products are setup for this type of partnership and were excited to have Acuity Brands, Lighting Science and others on board. b

The Tennessee Depart-ment of Transportation (TDOT) has approved the longitudinal instal-lation of large diameter, corrugated High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe for storm water drainage systems. Approval came after its year-long field test completed in June 2012 that showed no no-table defects, deflection or stress on the pipe buried with shallow cover and fill height depth of three to four feet. Since 2007 the TDOT has allowed the pipe to be used for cross drains, transverse median drains and storm drain systems with up to 18 feet of fill height. Previously, longitudinal use was lim-ited, for example, to side drains under driveways.

The Tennessee study and its subsequent ad-ditional approval of cor-rugated HDPE pipe is another confirmation of confidence for this dura-ble product, stated Tony Radoszewski, Executive Director of the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc. (PPI). We estimate that lon-gitudinal installation ac-counts for more than 80 percent HDPE pipe use in storm sewer drainage. This amendment to the TDOT design manual that expands the use of HDPE

pipe will greatly benefit everyone in Tennessee. This is because HDPE pipe has a very long use life and is highly cost ef-fective to purchase and install, which adds up to taxpayer savings. PPI is the major trade associa-tion representing all seg-ments of the plastic pipe industry.

Under the direction of TDOT and installed by an independent contrac-tor, the on-site test project used two runs of dual-wall, corrugated HDPE pipe that was manufac-tured to AASHTO M294 standard, Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe 300 (12 inch) to 1200 mm (48-inch) Diameter. The test site used 84 linear feet of 24-inch (600-mm) and 90 linear feet of 36-inch (900-mm) diameter pipe man-ufactured by Timewell (Timewell, Illinois), a member company of PPI. Installation conformed to TDOT Standards 204.10(b) and 204.11(b), TDOT Standard Drawing D-PB-1, and appropriate notes in the construction documents

The final inspection conducted by TDOT and Timewell engineers fol-lowed TDOT and AAS-HTO criteria, noting that deflection testing was to occur no sooner than 30 days after installa-tion. Due to easy access and the large diameter pipe sizes, direct physi-cal measurements and observations were taken from inside the pipe, and at regular intervals across the entire span of each pipe run. Vertical

measurements for de-flection of the pipe were taken at the beginning and terminus of each pipe run, at each joint, and generally at 10-foot intervals. Additional in-spections were geared to observe the condi-tion of the pipe, look-ing for material distress such as cracks, tears, or punctures. The standard length of an installed HDPE pipe section from Timewell is 20 feet, and all joints were examined for integrity.

According to the in-spection report, stated Radoszewski, the pipe retained its shape, was on line and grade, with-out any imperfections, and showed no signs of distress. Any deflections were symmetrical about their corresponding hori-zontal and vertical axis and well within the allow-able five percent maxi-mum no racking was observed. Each and every joint appeared well-seat-ed.

The inspection con-cluded that the pipe was favourably installed, the bed and backfill were properly compacted and followed standard in-dustry practices, such as those contained in PPI technical bulletins and the PPI Corrugated Polyethyl-ene Pipe Design Manual and Installation Guide, which can be convenient-ly found on our website under publications. Be-cause there were no no-table defects or stresses we can expect that future pipe installations using similar TDOT or industry approved methods will result in nearly identical positive results.

outstanding commercial output and dealing with the demands of the con-struction market.

The wash plant has been in operation for one month now and Ravi Singh, went on to say, We are ex-tremely impressed and ex-cited about the prospects of this new Terex washplant which is currently oper-ating at 200tph. We can firmly say this is the larg-est project the company has embarked on for a long time and undoubtedly the most successful in terms of production. The entire team involved in the proj-ect at Readymix (W.I) has been extremely impressed with all aspects of the plant from the initial conception through to the final end product, including consul-tation, engineering, service and aftersales support from both DUO and TWS.

Sean Loughran, Director of TWS, commented, The Trinidad sand and gravel washplant is a demonstra-tion of yet another complex plant offered by DUO and TWS. Both DUO and TWS carefully considered the customers specific needs and manufactured a custom plant which is operating at 200tph and is much more efficient than Readymixs previous plant, ultimately producing a more desirable product. This is supported

Readymix (W.I.) is one of Trinidads top produc-ers of high quality concrete and related products and was in need of a new wash plant to replace their ex-isting plant that was chal-lenged with inefficiencies and maintenance and pro-duction issues. Readymix (W.I.) chose to work with DUO PLC, who has more

than 35 years of industry experience and is also well known within the Carib-bean region. After careful analysis of Readymixs spe-cific requirements, paying particular attention to the varied high silt feed materi-al, DUO proposed a custom Terex Washing Systems plant that is now effective-ly processing clay bound

sand and gravel to produce three aggregates and one grade of sand while operat-ing at 200 tons per hour.

Readymix (W.I) selected a Terex plant over other op-tions specifically due to the expertise DUO and Terex offered in the field and the ability to provide a compre-hensive sales and support package. Ravi Singh, Quar-ry Manager for ReadyMix (W.I.), commented, DUO and Terex thoroughly in-vestigated the product to be processed; analyzing it thoroughly and from this designed a bespoke plant most suited to our individ-ual needs. In addition they provided a dedicated team of engineers, sales and af-tersales technicians to sup-port throughout the plant installation and commis-sioning process. T
