Atlas Copco and An-glo American are set to test a new type of mining machine that the companies say will transform the extrac-tion process of ore from underground hard rock mines. The two com-panies have been co-operating in a research and development part-nership since 2012 and their combined efforts, which centre on me-chanical excavation technology, are now in an advanced stage with proof-of-concept testing scheduled to start in the fall 2015. According to the company, if all goes according to plan, it will be one of the most significant examples of innovative technology to emerge from Anglo Americans FutureSmart approach to mining.

Scott Barker, Presi-dent of Atlas Copcos Underground Rock Ex-cavation Division, said: We are very proud to be

The Alberta govern-ments 2015/16 budget will help keep the provinces oil and gas industry competi-tive in a turbulent global market, supporting jobs and investment at a chal-lenging time, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) said April 2.

Albertans across the province are hurting with the drop in oil prices from rig workers and service crews, to head offices, small businesses and local corner stores, said CAPP president Tim McMillan. Now is not the time to put more cost pressures on industry.

Oil and natural gas com-panies have announced more than 4,500 direct layoffs in 2015, with an additional 23,000 jobs ex-pected to be lost as a result of lower drilling activity. Capital investment in the industry is forecast to de-cline more than $25 billion (33 percent) this year, from $69 billion last year to $46 billion in 2015.

The drop in oil prices has hurt our industry and it has hurt Albertas public finances. It would be irre-sponsible to put more jobs at risk. McMillan said.

We all must focus on protecting jobs and keep-ing Albertans working as much as possible.

According to Albertas budget documents, the oil and gas industrys pay-ments to the province are forecast to decline $5.9 bil-lion (67 percent) this year, from $8.8 billion last year to $2.9 billion this year.

Oil and natural gas pay-ments represent seven per-cent of total government revenue this year, a num-ber that is forecast to grow to 15 percent by 2020. In addition, the industry con-tributes about $1 billion annually in municipal tax-es and has paid nearly $500 million in greenhouse gas-related levies since 2007.

The oil and natural gas industry employs one in every six Albertans, with substantial related employ-

ment created in sectors such as hospitality, trans-portation, food services, consultation, construction and real estate. Each dol-lar invested in the oil and natural gas sector creates three dollars of value in Al-bertas economy across the province, particularly in ru-ral communities.

The global market for oil and natural gas invest-ment is extremely competi-tive. If we are going to con-tinue to grow Albertas oil and gas industry creating more jobs and increasing public revenues to improve our quality of life then we must keep Alberta attrac-tive for this future invest-ment, McMillan said. b

Terex Aerial Work Plat-forms (AWP) created a whole new look for The National WWII Museum in New Orleans during the 2015 Rental Show. The 100 foot tall outdoor facade was transformed with a specialized and astounding projection mapping ani-mation that was three di-mensional and very blue

The 3D experience, celebrating the launch of several new products in the Genie GTH telehandler family, was projected on the seven-story wall of The National WWII Museums US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center during the Genie customer apprecia-tion party. The architecture of the Museum and the ma-terial of the wall lent itself exceptionally well to the high-tech show.

The Genie 3D experi-ence was exceptional and really entertained and

impressed our guests, said Karen Stash, Senior Director of Global Market-ing and Product Manage-ment, Terex Aerial Work Platforms. The 3D effect absolutely transformed the 100 foot museum wall to visually tell the story of our full line of telehan-dlers.

The Genie team col-laborated with The Pro-duction Network and Go2 Productions of Vancou-ver, Canada to produce the event. It took four art-ists a total of 750 hours over the course of three weeks to complete the custom animation. The partys 450 guests were excited and impressed by the towering blue display, which introduced the full Genie telehandler family and its new products to the crowd.

3D Projection Mapping is a projection technol-

ogy used to turn objects/architecture, often irregu-larly shaped, into a dis-play surface for video pro-jection. These objects can range in complexity, but usually involve buildings, vehicles, custom built sets and complex industrial landscapes. By using spe-cialized software, Cinema 4D, a two- or three dimen-sional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be project on. From there, 3D animators add extra dimensions, opti-cal illusions and notions of movement onto the previously static object, which is later re-projected onto the object to create a unique 3D experience.

The location was great, because it allowed a perfect spot for the projec-tors to be placed, across from the event location on the roof of a building. This allowed us to place the projectors in a sweet spot, which heightened the illusion of the map-ping experience for the audience down below partaking in the event, said Adrian Scott, Cre-ative Director, Go2 Pro-ductions. b

Atlas Copco unveiled several pieces of equip-ment during its March dealer event in Phoenix. The event introduced many models of At-las Copco construction equipment, including the CT3000 tamping soil compactor, the CP1200 and CP2700 pneumatic tired asphalt rollers and the intelligent compaction system. Atlas Copco held the event to give dealers a first-hand look at the new products, technologies and sales tools.

Having people see our new equipment and tech-nology in action shows that were committed to rein-forcing our customer sup-port, said Brian Bieller, Atlas Copco vice president and road construction equipment business line manager. The best way to accomplish that is to roll them all out at once and demonstrate their capabili-ties.

Dealers had the op-portunity to climb aboard

the equipment and take some of the latest models for a test spin. They also learned about some of the new technology Atlas Copco is launching, includ-ing its intelligent compac-tion system, which will be available on Atlas Copco CC2000 through CC6200 asphalt rollers and CA2500 through CA6500 soil roll-ers.

Atlas Copco previewed its new, easy-to-use intel-ligent compaction system during the event. The IC system gives contrac-tors and equipment op-erators real-time mate-rial stiffness readings to ensure superior soil and asphalt compaction. For instance, the IC system allows operators to view their progress and ensure accurate pass counts. From a quality assurance standpoint, its saves con-tractors significant time and money because they can pull real-time data to prove that the work site received consistent

compaction. The system features a touch screen that is easy to navigate and read, making it user-friendly and convenient. And it will be equipped with Atlas Copcos Dyn link fleet management system, which contributes to equipment wellness and theft deterrence.

The event also allowed dealers to experience op-timal operator comfort and visibility with the equipment a hallmark of Atlas Copcos Road Construction division. For instance, The CT3000 features padfoot drums mounted on rubber tires to effectively absorb im-pact during operation, which minimizes vibra-tions to the cab to create a more comfortable ride. Several rollers, includ-ing the new CP1200 and CP2700 pneumatic tired asphalt rollers, feature a rotating seat, giving the operator a clear view of the drum edge for better precision. Spacious plat-forms and dual swing-out seats enhance visibility and operator comfort on the new F1000T paver benefits that are key to ef-ficiency, productivity and profitably. b

The Ditch Witch orga-nization announces the release of the MV800, a low-cost, compact and durable vacuum excava-tor designed specifically for clean-up on horizontal directional drilling (HDD) jobsites.

Featuring the heavy-duty, field-proven compo-nents that keep all Ditch Witch vacuum excavators performing strong year af-ter year, the MV800 is built for the punishing condi-tions common to HDD job-sites. A commercial-grade, 31-hp (23.1-kW) Briggs & Stratton Vanguard gas en-gine powers the MV800

and features an electric start and a high-capacity, remote air-intake filter that helps maximize perfor-mance.

The MV800s filtration system includes an inte-grated carryover chamber that eliminates contami-nants before they reach the blower, increasing efficien-cy and reducing downtime.

The MV800 is equipped with an 800-gallon (3028-L) spoils tank that is an ideal size for HDD drill-ing fluid clean-up jobs. With its optional reverse flow feature and optional hydraulic opening door, spoils removal is simple

and efficient. The MV800 also offers an optional wa-ter system with a 100-gal-lon (379-L) water tank and adjustable pressure up to 3,000-psi (207-bar) for soft excavation tasks such as potholing utilities.

Like all Ditch Witch equipment, the MV800 is designed for simple opera-tion. Its standard curb-side controls enable one-person control of all functions and promote jobsite safety. Other standard safety fea-tures include a strobe light, belt guards and mechanical locks on all lift cylinders.

Newmont Mining Cor-poration (NYSE: NEM) (Newmont or the Company) announced that it will build the first phase of Long Canyon, an oxide mine with sig-nificant upside potential in an emerging gold dis-trict located less than 100 miles from its existing Ne-vada operations.

The first phase of de-velopment consists of an open pit mine and heap leach operation with ex-pected gold production of between 100,000 and 150,000 ounces per year over an eight year mine life at an estimated all-in sustaining cost of between $500 and $600 per ounce. At current gold prices, the project is expected to gen-erate around $100 million in EBITDA annually, be-ginning in 2017.

Taking a phased ap-proach to developing Long Canyon gave us the means to lower development capi-tal to between $250 million and $300 million; generate

an internal rate of return of about 17 percent at current gold prices; and reduce the payback period to just over four years after first commercial production, which we expect to reach in the first half of 2017. committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and those of its customers, and it is investing considerable resources to do so. Trel-leborg Wheel Systems un-dertakes intensive research and development work together with the main tractor original equipment manufacturers, prompting sustainability consultants such as PE International, as well as the top agricul-tural schools in Europe, to create solutions that make a difference.

A major breakthrough came with the launch of the TM Blue tire concept to help farmers boost their productivity and at the same time reduce their en-vironmental footprint.

Cultivation accounts for more than 50 percent of the carbon footprint in the production of wheat and other cereals, and is therefore an important fo-cal area as both consumers and farmers look at ways to improve sustainabil-ity, says Lorenzo Ciferri,

Marketing Director of agri-cultural and forestry tires within Trelleborg Wheel Systems. With TM Blue farmers get a higher yield and at the same time re-duce their CO2 emissions.

The TM Blue agricul-tural tires till the soil in a gentle manner through low compaction, which allows the soil to return to its origi-nal state, resulting in lower plant loss and higher crop yields. This contributes to a six percent reduction in the carbon footprint compared with using other premium-brand tires.

Six percent may not sound like a huge amount, but it adds up. For example, the TM1000 HP BlueTire tires sold in 2013 will re-duce CO2 emissions by up to 13,700 tons over the life of the tire. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from about 2,884 personal vehi-cles in the course of a year.

The wide footprint area, up to 13 percent wider than the market average, gives better flotation characteris-tics by distributing the load evenly across the footprint. The excellent traction capa-bility of the TM Blue tires reduces slippage, which in turn reduces work time and energy dissipation, result-ing in lower fuel consump-tion. In just one week of tilling, the tires can provide fuel consumption savings of 45 to 75 litres and that adds up to cost savings for farmers as well.

In addition to the actual use of agricultural tires, Trelleborg is studying other aspects in the life cycle of tires, including raw mate-rials, production, distribu-tion and recycling.

In its Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) the bulk of the car-bon footprint of Trelleborg Wheel Systems 60 per-cent can be attributed to raw materials (excluding the LCAs use phase). We are improving the raw material phase through the eco-design of tires, select-ing the right suppliers and materials, Ciferri says.

In the production pro-cess, which accounts for 30 percent of the carbon foot-print, Trelleborg is analyz-ing each step to see how it can be more environmen-tally-friendly. Water recy-cling, projects to reduce energy consumption, using

renewable sources of en-ergy and eliminating waste are some of the solutions. Less than three percent of waste material goes to landfill sites, and environ-mentally-friendly extender oils are used throughout the production process to prevent the risk of environ-mental contamination.

The LCA shows that distribution accounts for just three to five percent of the carbon footprint, but Trelleborg is addressing this area as well by manu-facturing closer to its main markets. This will help re-duce CO2 emissions caused by long-distance deliver-ies. Trelleborgs first North American manufacturing facility dedicated to the manufacture of premium radial tires for agricultural machinery is currently be-ing built in South Carolina.

When it comes to the end of an agricultural tires life cycle, Trelleborg esti-mates that averages of 40 to 45 percent of tire materi-als are recycled. This por-tion increases significantly year to year, and it can po-tentially double within the next decade, adds Ciferri.

Looking to the future, he anticipates some big changes, especially when it comes to the use of raw materials. Two-thirds of our raw materials are based on fossil fuels, and we know this is going to have to change, he says. We are already working jointly with our key sup-pliers looking into ways to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels by replacing them with other materials, such as advanced bio-poly-mers to replace synthetic rubber. b

The Ditch Witch organi-zation introduces the SK850 footings machine, which is designed to create trenches up to 16 inches (41 cm) wide and up to 36 inches (91 cm) deep for slab construc-tion on residential and com-mercial jobsites.

With its specialized, heavy-duty chain and Tier 4, 37-hp (27.6-kW) diesel engine, the SK850 footings machine creates cleaner, more consistent trenches than an excavator can, and in less time. The machine is more compact than an excavator, so it can be more productive in tight

jobsites. Plus, it can trench from either a centreline or offset position, so the op-erator can dig right up to the backer board. With 43 inches (109 cm) of track on ground, the SK850 footings machine also has the sta-bility to effectively cross-trench.

New Ditch Witch Footings Machine Faster Than Excavator

Dana Holding Corpora-tion (NYSE: DAN) show-cased its innovative metal-lic bipolar plate technology, among other fuel-cell com-ponents, at Hannover Messe 2015, April 13-17. The company also provid-ed a detailed overview of its fuel-cell work as a par-ticipant in the Auto-Stack CORE network, an impor-tant initiative to establish an industrial core for a fu-el-cell industry in Europe. The stack developed by the network was on display in the Dana booth.

Danas exhibit at Han-nover Fairgrounds - fea-tured a full range of fuel-cell products and thermal-management sys-tems, including moulded graphite composite bipolar plates, catalytic reactors for hydrogen reforming, fuel-cell balance-of-plant components, lithium-ion battery coolers, and insu-lated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) coolers for power electronics applications.

At Dana, were con-tinuously innovating and looking toward alterna-tive power sources as the demand for clean, effi-cient resources continues to evolve, said Dwayne Matthews, president of Danas Power Technolo-

gies Group. Contributing to the Auto-Stack CORE network has helped show-case our leadership in this critical industry sector, and we look forward to achiev-ing greater successes in the near future with this proj-ect.

The Auto-Stack CORE network is composed of 14 organizations, including original-equipment manu-facturers (OEMs), automo-tive suppliers, and research institutions. Each of the organizations participating in the coalition, including Dana, offers valuable ex-pertise in a range of fuel-cell capacities. The project launched in 2013 with the companies collaborating to develop best-in-class au-tomotive fuel stack hard-ware.

Danas most significant contribution to the proj-ect, optimized metallic bi-polar plates, has assisted the coalition in develop-ing a stack that achieves improved power density and performance than a traditional stack, while reducing the overall cost. The next step will be to en-hance each component and ultimately develop fuel-cell stack architecture ready for production. The project is expected to be completed

with production-capable components in 2016.

While in pursuit of mak-ing fuel-cells safer, more durable, and capable of increased performance, Dana and the Auto-Stack CORE coalition also are working to provide a more cost-effective solution. As a world leader in the development and manu-facture of fuel-cell stack components, reducing the costs associated with fuel-cell technology has been a key focus for Dana, as the company hopes to lower this barrier to more wide-spread adoption of fuel-cell vehicles.

Joachim Scherer, Ph.D., manager of fuel-cell R&D for Dana, highlighted Da-nas contribution to the Auto-Stack CORE platform; following Scherer was Hans Katzmaier, Danas director of global advanced business development, who addressed commer-cialization indicators of the automotive fuel-cell pow-ertrain.
