The all-new Gehl Z25 compact excavator goes above and beyond the size class expectations with its groundbreak-ing performance features and technology. This new model incorporates innovative features that enhance productivity, operator comfort, effi-ciency and cost savings on the jobsite. This com-pact powerhouse brings 8 inches (203 mm) deeper dig depth and 8.3 inches (211 mm) ad-ditional reach at ground level compared to the previous model, the Z27.

The new Z25 is equipped with a 20.4 hp (15.2 kW) electronically-controlled Yanmar Tier IV emissions certified die-sel engine. No engine re-generation is required on the Z25, reducing down-time on the jobsite. Low exhaust position on the machine reduces noise, increases safety and im-

proves visibility. Cold-weather starting is easy with an electric glow plug starting aid, reducing the need for block heaters or starting fluid.

The operators station on the Z25 compact ex-cavator is built for op-timal productivity and controllability. Joystick controls, operated by simple wrist movements, reduce fatigue during a long work day. The con-trols on the Z25 include a proportional auxiliary hydraulic rocker switch with detent on the joy-stick. This allows the op-erator to adjust the hy-draulic flow for precise attachment performance while keeping his/her hands on the joysticks. The operator can easily select standard ISO or an optional backhoe control pattern with a turn of a mechanical lever. The two-position, high speed travel switch is conve-

niently integrated in the blade control lever for easy accessibility.

A digital operator in-terface features an hour meter and clock, record-able maintenance his-tory with adjustable time intervals and remind-ers, fluid levels, fluid temperature, and more. Machine hours can be reviewed for the past 90 days without starting the engine. Multiple lan-guage selections are also available.

The operators com-partment is designed with comfort in mind. A 4-way adjustable seat offers cus-tom height, weight and backrest positions with a retractable belt. Elevated, folding travel pedals allow for additional foot room when performing station-ary work. An optional cab enclosure with heat pro-vides comfort and protec-tion in extreme weather conditions. Auxiliary hy-draulic flow rate up to 13.6 gpm (51.3 L/min), paired with high system pressure up to 2,987 psi (206 bar), deliver more hydraulic muscle to power demanding attach-ments and deliver supe-

Serviceability is made easy on the Z25 compact excavator. Tool-free ac-cess panels give quick and easy access to the hy-

draulic tank, engine com-partment, control valve, air cleaner and control pattern valve. A standard track drive system (com-pared to an offset track drive on the Z27) pro-vides long life and allows

for easy aftermarket track replacement.

The Z25, along with the other Gehl compact excavators, feature a Ze-ro-Tail-Swing design to maximize productivity in confined spaces. The cast

side protectors add armor at the base of the upper structure. Other impor-tant performance features include a high-strength boom with sliding cylin-der guards that protect the rods from damage. The Power-a-Tach hydraulic quick coupler enables at-tachment changes by the flip of a switch inside the cab. The operator leaves the seat only to engage and disengage the safety pin.Applications

The Gehl Z25 compact excavator is positioned in the North American market to meet the needs of contractors, agricul-tural customers, and the rental industry. Gehl Compact Excavators ex-cel in applications such as grading, trenching, digging, demolition and recycling and light utility construction. Their com-pact nature and zero-tail-swing design make them ideal in situations where space is limited.Interview

With the introduction of the Z25, the newest addition to the Gehl com-pact excavator lineup, we were focused on our

customers requests for a smaller machine with improved performance and comfort, says Na-than Ryan, Product Man-ager for Gehl compact excavators. The Z25 will replace the Z27, giv-ing our customers a ma-chine that can easily be transported by trucks in the 3-ton size class. Even though the Z25 is smaller than the Z27, this EPA Tier IV-certified model boasts an increase in dig depth and reach and ground level. Operators will also notice enhance-ments in ergonomics with a larger cab, nearly pedal-free flat floor, and 4-way adjustable seat. The Canadian Construc-tion Association (CCA) was pleased with the recent release of a new Canada West Foundation report entitled Building on Ad-vantage: Improving Cana-das Trade Infrastructure, which reinforces the link between a healthy Cana-dian economy and reliable infrastructure. The report also emphasizes the ongo-ing need for sustainable and strategic investment in the countrys trade-related infrastructure.

Canadian commodity sectors rely on the ability to move goods quickly and efficiently, particularly if those sectors are to meet increasing demand from lucrative new global mar-kets, said Michael At-kinson, President of the Canadian Construction As-sociation. This report from the Canada West Founda-tion highlights that a failure to address our countrys in-frastructure needs has the potential to lead to future crisis. Without strategic in-

vestment in our trade-relat-ed infrastructure, Canada may miss out on the tre-mendous economic oppor-tunities available to us.

The report showcases that Canadas current in-frastructure assets have served the country well so far, but have seen a steady decline in world rankings. In the 2010 World Eco-nomic Forums Competi-tiveness Index, Canadas infrastructure assets were ranked in 9th place. By 2014, Canada had fallen to 19th place, and behind the United States.

As a country, we must ensure that we can meet demand and maintain our reputation as a reliable supplier, Atkinson con-tinued. Investments to manage, expand and build trade-related infrastructure are truly investments in the economy, and in some cas-es could unlock more than $1.3 trillion in economic output, 7.6 million person-years of employment, and $281 billion in tax revenue.

Recent investments by Ca-nadian governments are an acknowledgment of this, and we are pleased to see infrastructure remain top of mind in many policy circles.

The report makes sev-eral recommendations in order to initiate action on trade-related infrastruc-ture, such as carving out an explicit portion of exist-ing federal infrastructure funds for trade-related in-frastructure, introducing a focus on innovation in the procurement of trade infra-structure projects, and the establishment of a national public-private body that would develop a long-term investment plan linked to the countrys trade agenda and priorities.

These recommenda-tions are closely aligned to a recent report from the B20 entitled, Driving Growth and Jobs B20 Policy Rec-ommendations to the G20. The business council to the G20 report suggests, among other recommenda-tions, that countries develop supply-chain strategies to reflect their infrastructure in-vestment, and those invest-ments, both public and pri-vate-sector, remain tied to a national strategic vision. b

Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Region-al District have again demonstrated their com-mitment to monitoring air quality throughout our shared airshed by adding a new monitoring station in Mission.

The new station, lo-cated in central Mission near the Mission Second-ary School, is the 28th permanent station in Metro Vancouvers Air Quality Monitoring Net-work. The network col-lects air data from Horse-shoe Bay to Hope every hour of the day, seven days a week.

All of the data col-lected is now available on an updated AirMap.ca, which is accessible on mobile and desktop devices.

Our air monitoring network is one of the most comprehensive in the world, said Board Chair Greg Moore.

The additional data from the Mission station

will provide us with a more-complete picture of air quality through-out the Lower Mainland. And with the ability to now access the informa-tion on mobile devices, people can find out about the air quality wherever they are, he added.

The station is owned by the Fraser Valley Re-gional District and col-lects data on ground-level ozone, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides, which are indi-cators for the Air Qual-ity Health Index. The Index is a scale designed to provide information on health effects of air quality and to help limit exposure to air pollution especially for vulnerable groups like children, se-niors, and those with re-spiratory illnesses.

The Mission station is now contributing data to Metro Vancouvers Air Quality Monitoring Net-work and is also part of AirMap.ca, which dis-

plays real-time informa-tion on a colour-coded map to indicate readings from low to high risk. AirMap.ca shows the lat-est readings, 24-hour and seven-day trends as well as meteorological data like temperature, wind speed, and wind direc-tion for each monitoring station.

By collecting even more data and improv-ing public access to it, residents of and visitors to Metro Vancouver can easily check air condi-tions and plan activities while protecting their health, said Director Heather Deal, Chair of Metro Vancouvers Envi-ronment and Parks Com-mittee.

Clean, clear air is one of the things that makes Metro Vancou-ver a great and desirable place to live, play and work, said Chair Moore. By adding another mon-itoring station to this important network, we are demonstrating the importance we place on continuously improving the air quality in the air-shed that we share with the Fraser Valley Region-al District. b

The D3522 Attachment from Blastcrete Equipment Company is the only hot ep-oxy pump on the market that can be powered by an exist-ing hydraulic power source. It is lighter, more versatile and much more affordable than hot epoxy pumps and mixer/pump combinations with built-in power supplies, especially since skid steers and other equipment with auxiliary hydraulic hookups can power the unit.

The D3522 Attachment features a hydraulic squeeze

(peristaltic) pump that is built for long life and low total cost of ownership. The pump has two rollers that rotate clockwise and squeeze a 2-inch rubber pumping tube. The rotation generates suction from the receiving hopper and push-es the material through the pump and out the discharge into the delivery hose. The epoxy materials do not come in contact with the moving parts of the squeeze pump, unlike a rotor stator or pis-ton-style pump. The D3522 Attachments primary wear part, a 2-inch rubber pump-ing tube, can be replaced in 20 minutes or less.

The D3522 Attachment can pump hot epoxy or cementitious grouts at vari-able speeds from 0 to 6 cubic yards per hour and deliver up to 400 psi of pumping pressure. Those capabilities, coupled with the units light weight, make it easy to transport and highly versatile. Con-tractors can use the pump for a wide variety of appli-cations, such as grouting to

mount and secure heavy industrial equipment and pumping fiberglass jackets for pier rehabilitation and stabilization.

The D3522 Attachment also can be used for spray-ing plaster and small wet-shotcrete applications.

The unit boasts a variety of safety features to protect the operator. For exam-ple, if the pump becomes plugged, the operator can easily reverse the pump for 5 seconds to relieve pres-sure on the delivery hose.

Blastcrete designed the D3522 Attachment for easy operation. The unit has a large, well-marked control panel with simple control levers to operate the pump-ing function. The control panel is near the hydraulic hookups for easy access.

The D3522 Attachment also is easy to clean and maintain. After the unit has been emptied of excess ma-terial, contractors can rinse the hopper with water and insert a round sponge ball into the suction hole of the pump. The hopper is then flooded with water or other solution for cleaning epoxies. The ball is simply pumped through the pump and delivery hose to ensure it is clean and clear. b

Machine control on heavy equipment is often synonymous with road building and large site prep but its not all about the long grade. Here are six machine control applica-tions that can immediately help improve productiv-ity and reduce rework in earthmoving applications.

1. Trenching at a specif-ic depth using a 2D system: excavators, backhoes and compact excavators can all be outfitted with 2D and 3D machine control sys-tems to assist in everything from mass excavation to precisely sloped trenches. Sometimes, however, a trench only needs to be a certain depth below the contour of the land. An excavator with a 2D sys-tem in this application can benchmark against the ground it sits on. The op-erator can set the machine to cut at a depth of six feet, as an example, and the system will indicate to the operator when the bucket has reached a depth of six feet. Then, the machine

can back up, benchmark again against the new sur-face, and continue indicat-ing to the operator when theyve reached six feet in the new spot. The opera-tor can repeat this for the entire length of the trench.

Advantage: easy to use and set up, consistent trench depth, eliminates time and energy associated with over-digging.

2. Spot-bulldozing to better prepare a site for grading: picture an un-touched jobsite marked with random hills, piles and other terrain abnor-malities. The dozer is equipped with a 3D sys-tem, but those inconsisten-cies present a challenge for the machine: by sticking to the plan, there is a risk that the dozer can be over-loaded as it pushes into the piles of excessive material. The operator will also not want to risk removing too much of the material by eyeballing it manually (at the risk of undercutting and having to fill it back in). With machine control,

the operator can bench-mark the blade path at a higher level than originally intended. This allows the operator to pass over these problem areas and create a clean starting point to more accurately grade the site to its intended plan.

Advantage: easier on the dozer and operator, able to grade the entire site at an expedient pace.

3. Eliminating undercut-ting: not so much an appli-cation as a benefit related to number 2, and machine control in general. Under-cutting occurs when too much material is removed from the site. The rework associated with undercut-ting doesnt just create double the work (bringing more material in to bring the site back up to the original plan), it actually requires triple the work in some applications where compaction is then re-quired to bring the material to spec. The goal is to only move material once. The greatest benefit of machine control: getting the job done right the first time.

Advantage: eliminating rework, saving time and cost (fuel, labor, etc.).

tractors dont often connect precision with mass excava-tion applications theyre often focused on just mov-ing as much dirt as quickly as possible, and then worry-ing about the finished grade at a later date. But a machine control system equipped on an excavator can allow that operator to dig with full speed and confidence, and never over-excavate. By get-ting the terrain as close to the final grade as possible, its going to eliminate hav-ing to haul in more material in the future.

Advantage: increased productivity and reduced finishing work.

5. Better contouring jobsite edges to the sur-rounding land: 3D systems outfitted on both dozers or graders can help contrac-tors seamlessly connect the project to the contour of the ground surrounding it. Without machine con-trol, a contractor may just simply cut and fill to the plan so that it leaves an ir-regular edge to the project but doesnt integrate to the surrounding property. This can impact landscape,

drainage, sight lines, etc. The machine control sys-tem can be set to extend the project to the existing surface to seamlessly tran-sition to the rolling hills or slope already present.

Advantage: Better ap-pearance and flow with surrounding properties.

6. Skid steers and com-pact track loaders for final grade work around obsta-cles: machine control isnt just for the big boys. If you think about final grading, especially as you get close to buildings and other ob-stacles, larger bulldozers and graders cant often do that work. Compact track loaders particularly which provide significantly lower ground pressure than other machines can get next to buildings and operate over underground utilities, etc. without causing too much disturbance. The agility of these more compact ma-chines compared to their larger counterparts also of-fers significant productivity and accuracy benefits in tight spaces.

Another unique appli-cation for a compact track loader or skid steer would be a small project such as sportsfield construction and maintenance.

Advantage: Greater agil-ity, responsiveness and accuracy in relatively con-fined spaces.

BC Ferries Queen of Capilano will undergo a $12 million mid-life upgrade (MLU) January 5 to May 5, 2015 to prepare the vessel for another 20 years of safe and reliable service. The Bowen Queen will provide service on the Bowen Island-Horseshoe Bay route for the duration of the MLU.

The refit work will be carried out at Esquimalt Drydocking Company, and highlights of the vessels extensive upgrade will in-clude the following safety, mechanical and customer service improvements: Installation of gallery

decks: increasing capac-ity from approximately 85 to 100 vehicles,

Installation of a new en-trance/exit for walk-on

passengers in the upper lounge,

Installation of a new evacuation system and replacement of the res-cue boat,

Installation of a pet area Complete elevator sys-

tem overhaul, Upgrade of stairwell and

disabled washroom, Upgrade of the ship in-

tercom and public ad-dress system.A significant upgrade

such as the one the Queen of Capilano is undergoing allows BC Ferries to operate a more efficient vessel for decades into the future, said Mark Wilson, BC Ferries Vice Pres-ident of Engineering. Most importantly, the end result is a safe and dependable ferry service for the community of

Bowen Island.As the vehicle capac-

ity of the Bowen Queen is lower than that of the Queen of Capilano, BC Ferries will be providing additional services to help mitigate the potential for overloads. This includes a direct-to-downtown bus shuttle, discounted parking at Horseshoe Bay termi-nal, additional sailings and assured loading for high-occupancy vehicles during key afternoon commuter sailings to Bowen Island.

Doosan has added to its Tier 4 compliant crawler excavator lineup with the DX420LC-5, DX490LC-5 and DX530LC-5. The three new excavators feature increased performance, operator-focused comfort, fuel efficiency, unmatched reliability and durability. The new Tier 4 compli-ant excavators replace the interim Tier 4 (iT4) DX-420LC-3, DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3.

Doosan DX420LC-5, DX-490LC-5 and DX530LC-5 excavators comply with Tier 4 emission standards

with modified diesel en-gines and aftertreatment technologies. The engines are optimized for use with a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel delivery system and a cooled ex-haust gas recirculation (CEGR) system. They uti-lize a diesel oxidation cata-lyst (DOC) to reduce par-ticulate matter (PM) and selective catalyst reduc-tion (SCR) aftertreatment to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx). Additionally, the crawler excavators use a variety of aftertreatment systems as part of the Tier

4 compliance, such as die-sel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is used with SCR technology.

Doosan added a mass airflow sensor and exhaust brake to its existing diesel technologies to help meet Tier 4 emission standards. The mass airflow sensor allows the electronic con-trol unit (ECU) to improve the management of airflow from the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), and to optimize fuel delivery to the combustion chamber based on engine air intake volume and rpm. The VGT

is utilized to enhance boost pressure throughout a wide rpm range of the engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency at lower rpms. This also generates higher torque levels and faster en-gine response even at low rpm. The exhaust brake helps to maintain consis-tent engine temperatures at lower engine speeds to im-prove operating efficiency. Consistent engine tempera-tures reduce harmful emis-sion levels in the exhaust when the engine is running at lower rpms. Under nor-mal operation, with high rpms, the exhaust brake is inactive. This also gener-ates higher torque levels and faster engine response even at low rpm, and im-proves machine perfor-mance in the Standard and Economy power modes while saving fuel.Display enhancements

An improved 7-inch LCD display panel allows operators to continue monitoring the excavator parameters while viewing the rearview and/or side view camera image. Criti-cal machine data appears next to the camera view. With an optional side cam-era, a split screen allows both camera displays to be viewed at once. New additions to the monitor include the DEF gauge and improved fuel efficiency.

To help save valuable diesel fuel, Doosan added auto-shutdown to its exca-vators to help owners save fuel during non-working conditions. Operators can configure the idle time from 3 to 60 minutes. When enabled, the feature will shut down the excava-tors engine when the pre-set idle time is met. This is particularly helpful in Cali-fornia where state regula-tions require idling for only 5 minutes for off-highway machines.New machine updates
