The Governments of Al-berta and Colorado have agreed to work together to share ideas, best practices and information that sup-ports a cleaner energy fu-ture.

The co-operative efforts were discussed and agreed to after Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Al-berta International and In-tergovernmental Relations Minister Cal Dallas visited the oil sands on March 27.

We welcomed the op-portunity to explore eco-nomic development op-portunities for Colorado and see first-hand the op-erations in Albertas oil sands, said Hickenlooper. Expectations are high for North American energy producers and govern-ments to continue to raise the bar on environmental management. Colorado looks forward to building a co-operative relationship with Alberta that will see both jurisdictions excel as continental leaders in re-sponsible energy develop-ment.

More than 28 Colorado companies provide equip-ment, parts and services to the oil sands.

    Dallas commended Governor Hickenlooper for

recently spearheading an initiative between a num-ber of American states to increase the use of natural gas vehicles in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel efficiency at a lower cost to consumers.

Dallas said its worth a serious look to see whether Alberta and other prov-inces can forge a similar agreement under the Cana-dian Energy Strategy.

We applaud Governor Hickenloopers vision and effort to address emis-sions, said Dallas. Col-orado and Alberta have similar goals and show leadership on environ-mental actions. Alberta is very proud of its leading environmental actions. However, we are fully committed to push the bar higher.

Alberta and Colorado have agreed to bring the agreement on clean energy collaboration to the sum-mer meeting of Western Governors in Utah in June. Efforts will be made to strike a working group be-tween provinces and states to pursue clean energy ini-tiatives.

Alberta was the first ju-risdiction in North America

to require by law that all large industries take action on greenhouse gas emis-sions. The regulation in-cludes an existing $15 price on carbon. Through this, Alberta has a clean tech-nology fund that has gener-ated $312 million and has already committed $181 million to 49 clean energy projects. This is in addition to a $1.3-billion investment in carbon capture and stor-age projects.

Over the past 18 months Alberta has taken a num-ber of other leading envi-ronmental actions. These include an unprecedented commitment to open-ness and transparency of energy development and environmental manage-ment through an on-line oil sands information portal, a world-leading oil sands monitoring program, an arms length governance system and a comprehen-sive land-use plan for the oil sands region that sets out vast swaths of protect-ed land.

The Colorado delega-tion of more than 30 people toured Edmontons world-class Waste Management Centre and met with sever-al business leaders. Alberta exports, on average, $2.27 billion in products yearly to Colorado. The state key economic sectors include energy and agriculture. The tour was an effort to foster strong ties between the two jurisdictions. b

British Columbians re-cently saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity and re-duced the provincial elec-tricity load by 1.95 percent during Earth Hour the equivalent of turning off more than 10 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs.

Many communities across the province suc-cessfully improved their Earth Hour energy savings from the previous year. Comox and Courtenay saw the highest reduction at nearly 10 percent.

Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported by BC Hydro. This year marks the sixth year of BC Hydros support of the event. The goal of Earth Hour is to encourage individuals to turn off un-necessary lights and elec-tronics in an effort to con-serve power and, in doing so, demonstrate support for climate change reduc-tion efforts.

    This year, many BC

Hydro account holders were able to track their electricity use by logging onto MyHydro their on-line account at www.bchydro.com/myhydro. They were able to see the hourly breakdown for their account and compare Earth Hour electricity use with their use on the Saturday prior to Earth Hour.

Power Smart tips help British Columbians make a difference in energy con-servation through simple efforts year-round. Since 2007, BC Hydros Power Smart programs have saved close to 4,300 giga-watt hours per year of elec-tricity enough to power 390,000 B.C. homes. Facts: The top five B.C. com-

munities for this years Earth Hour were: Co-mox, Courtenay, North Saanich, Sidney and Qualicum.

Vancouvers electricity load dropped by 2.4 per cent during Earth Hour

    2013. In 2012, British Columbi-

ans saved 121 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.67 per cent during Earth Hour the equivalent of turning off about 9 mil-lion 12.5-watt LED light bulbs.

The total provincial en-ergy savings from Earth Hour participation since 2008 is 500.27 megawatt hours of electricity the equivalent of turning off 40 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs.

The province-wide ener-gy savings reported since BC Hydro began sup-porting Earth Hour are as follows: 121 megawatt

Seattle-based construc-tion software developer Dexter + Chaney (www.dexterchaney.com) has released its new Spectrum Project Management soft-ware at the 2013 World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas. Spectrum Project Management is available as part of the suite of appli-cations that comprise Dex-ter + Chaneys Spectrum Construction Software product line.

According to John Chaney, Dexter + Chaney President and Co-founder, Project management is not one task performed in one location. It involves a continuous flow of work, data and documents that move from place to place and person to person. Weve designed a com-plete system to help project managers handle the work, the documents, the com-munication and the people that comprise complex construction projects.

Spectrum Project Man-agement is cloud-based, requiring no software downloads and accessible from any device with a web browser. Just like every other Spectrum ap-plication, Spectrum Project Management is 100 per-cent web-based, Chaney said. Users simply launch

a web browser from any-where theyre working to access all of the features and functionality of the software.

What makes Spec-trum Project Management unique is how it combines the tools and informa-tion that project managers need into a single applica-tion. Project managers are at the center of a storm of data and documents, said Mark Peltz, Dexter + Chaney Product Manager for Construction Operations Software. Instead of using three, four or more applica-tions to build a picture of project status, they can use Spectrum Project Manage-ment to combine financial and field information, man-age people and documents, and track workflow from a single project log screen that eliminates the need to maintain multiple logs.

The Spectrum Project Management application covers numerous project management functions, including job cost and progress reporting, project logging, submittal and RFI tracking, and project docu-ment storage and shar-ing. For more informa-tion on Spectrum Project Management, visit www.dexterchaney.com/project-management. b

Strongco Corporation (TSX: SQP) is pleased to announce it has completed the purchase of eight acres of land that will be used to build its new branch in Saint-Augustin-de-Des-maures, Quebec to im-prove our presence in the Quebec City region.

The new branch will replace the existing Sainte-Foy location and will carry Volvo Construction Equip-ment products, as well as other complementary brands. Construction on the 40,500 square foot facil-ity is scheduled to begin in the spring and is slated for completion in early 2014.

This new branch will build on the longstand-ing excellent relationships

with our customers in the area. Replacing our Sainte-Foy location with an up-dated and well-situated branch in Saint-Augustin allows us to provide more comprehensive and timely service to our customers, said Bob Dryburgh, Presi-dent and Chief Executive Officer of Strongco. This new development is an integral part of Strongcos growth strategy to in-crease our market pres-ence in key markets, such as Quebec by building on Strongcos reputation of delivering a superior cus-tomer experience.

The new Saint-Augus-tin branch will involve a total capital cost of $8.6 million. b

It was recently an-nounced that Minister Pat Bell would not seek re-election for another term as the MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie. His decision was based on medical reasons and we wish him all of the best for a speedy recovery and good health.

Over the years, we at Coast Forests found Min-ister Bell to be one of the hardest working and most committed Cabinet Ministers with whom we have worked. With per-sonal roots in forestry (he co-owned a logging com-pany), his professional ac-complishments for the in-dustry were notable.

When he was Minister of Forests, Minister Bell was a tireless advocate for BC forestry as it developed and grew in the Chinese market. His work on trade missions was instrumental in build-ing strong relationships with customers and government in China which later became

important to sustaining the industry during the reces-sion.

Here at home, Minis-ter Bell was a strong sup-porter for the implementa-tion of the 6-story building code and the Wood First Act. The latter promotes the use of BC wood prod-ucts as carbon-friendly, durable and cost-effective modern housing solutions. As Minister of Agriculture and Lands, he struck a deal on the Central Coast and North Coast. Finally, he provided leadership on four successful arbitrations relating to the Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) where it was found, each time, that BC timber pric-ing policies were fully con-sistent with the SLA.

Minister Bell has made a significant and positive impact to forestry in BC over the years. On behalf of all of us at Coast Forest, we thank him for his hard work and dedication. b

By the end of this year, a non-profit contractor will have helped Winnipeg families conserve more than 1.74 billion litres of water through bathroom plumbing retrofits, enough to fill 700 Olympic-sized swimming pools, Conser-vation and Water Steward-ship Minister Gord Mack-intosh and Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross said recently, while mark-ing International World Water Day.

Building Urban Indus-tries for Local Develop-ment (BUILD Inc.) has been installing new water-efficient toilets and show-ers in inner-city homes since 2006 and expects to have 9,500 installations completed by years end, said Mackintosh.

BUILDs success in saving this phenomenal amount of water is help-ing protect our precious resources for future gen-erations, the minister said. We know many countries are already fac-

ing water shortages but in Manitoba we are lucky to still have some of the greatest freshwater re-sources in the world.

In addition to being a contractor, BUILD runs a trades-based employ-ment program that trains Aboriginal and inner-city residents who would oth-erwise face employment obstacles. Its retrofitting services, which include insulating homes, have helped save inner-city households more than $225 a year in water costs and about $475 a year for heating costs, said Irvin-Ross, adding BUILDs work last year alone saved Manitoba Housing more than $300,000 in utility bills.

The opportunity to partner with an organiza-tion that recognizes the value of our provinces natural resources and our inner-citys human re-sources is unique, she said. BUILD does phe-nomenal work employing neighbourhood people, im-

proving the quality of our housing and saving gov-ernment money by reduc-ing heat and water costs.

The ministers noted that, in 2012, BUILD com-pleted 2,500 retrofits for Manitoba Housing, more than in any year since the organization was incorpo-rated.

World Water Day of-fers us the opportunity to celebrate the economic and environmental benefits of the retrofitting work our trainees and apprentices do in lower-income Winnipeg households, said Tyler Pearce, BUILDs Director of Operations. Our organiza-tion has grown each year, while the environmental footprint of our neighbour-hood has shrunk.

BUILD also has partner-ships with Manitoba Hydro, Neighbourhoods Alive!, the Manitoba Immigrant Inte-gration Program, and Can-adas Skills and Partnership Fund. More information is available at www.warmup-winnipeg.ca/.

International World Wa-ter Day is held on March 22 each year to focus attention on the importance of fresh water and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. b

Wajax Industrial Components (WIC), a division of Wajax Cor-poration, and Kaman Industrial Technologies Corporation (Kaman) of Bloomfield. Conn., two of North Americas lead-ing industrial distributors, recently announced that they have formed a stra-tegic alliance, strengthen-ing the services offered to customers that have busi-ness assets in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Puer-to Rico. While both WIC and Kaman will remain as separate and indepen-dent entities, they will

join forces to compete for business-to-business and supply agreements with customers in multiple ju-risdictions, providing an alternative to country-based supply agreements. The alliance will operate under the name Source-point Industrial.

Were expecting more and more customers to make purchasing deci-sions on a global or inter-national basis, said Mark Foote, Wajax Corpora-tions President and Chief Executive Officer, refer-ring to the business trends which led to the alliance.

Whereas Wajax is very good at satisfying a cus-tomers Canadian needs, and Kaman is very good at satisfying a customers U.S. needs, on our own, we each have a limited ability to cover a cus-tomers needs across both countries. This alliance will provide customers with a viable option that has unique strengths on either side of the border.

Historically, North American customers have had a limited choice for suppliers of their power-transmission and motion-control products, added Steve Smidler, Kamans President. This alliance gives customers an alter-native, and an opportu-nity to benefit from both companies value proposi-tions. b

AECOM Technology Corporation (NYSE:ACM), a leading provider of pro-fessional technical and management support ser-vices for public and pri-vate clients in more than 140 countries around the world, recently announced that an AECOM Austra-lian subsidiary is part of a consortium that has been awarded a contract to im-prove access to Perth Air-

port, one of Australias fastest-growing airports.

AECOMs Australia subsidiary is part of a con-sortium of companies that have formed an alliance with Main Roads Western Australia to deliver the states largest road project, the Gateway WA, which has a construction value of US$1.05 billion. AECOMs contribution is expected to generate revenue in ex-

cess of US$10 million. The alliance includes design partners GHD and BG&E, and construction partners Leighton Contractors and Georgiou Group.

As design partner, AE-COM will draw on national and international experi-ence to provide engineer-ing design, geotechnical investigations and environ-ment approvals.

We are eager to part-ner with Main Roads West-ern Australia on this key transportation infrastruc-ture project, said John M. Dionisio, AECOM Chair-man and Chief Executive Officer. We look forward to helping improve airport access for Western Aus-tralia residents, business travelers and visitors, and to enabling better manage-ment of the increasing traf-fic around and through the airport.

The project will upgrade the Tonkin and Leach high-ways, and will include the construction of five new in-terchanges to create land-mark road infrastructure around Perth Airport as well as surrounding indus-trial and freight hubs.

Construction on the project is scheduled to be-gin later this year. b

Screening and crushing industry leader McClos-key International contin-ued its expansion in 2012, with sixty percent growth overall, a 30% increase in workforce and the addition of over 136,000 in square footage to its plants in Can-ada and Northern Ireland over the past year.

In 2012, the Peterbor-ough factory expanded its facility to house a new ap-proximately 42,500 sq. ft. new warehouse and ship-ping/receiving building and additional space for production lines adding up to 78,000 sq.ft.. Since 2008 the footprint of the Cana-dian factory has increased by over 50%, with five new buildings and produc-tion areas added within the past year. The plant in Ire-land has been undergoing substantial growth as well over the course of 2012 .A 9,000 sq. building was add-ed as well as a 7,000 sq. ft assembly building in Coal-island assembling C38, I44, and I54 crushers.

In addition to its physi-cal expansion, over the past twelve months the company has continued to add new international dealers across all regions to represent the number of new products that were added to the com-panys portfolio.

There have been many contributors to our success, but one of the greatest is the strength of our dealer base worldwide, said Pas-chal McCloskey, President and CEO of McCloskey In-ternational. Their enthu-siasm for the products, in-dustry knowledge and their understanding of what the

customer needs is the en-gine behind our growth. We have 65 dealers and our goal in the next two years is to have 100. There is a lot of opportunity as we continue to grow our share of the markets worldwide, and explore new applica-tions for our machines.

The expansion will con-tinue into 2013-14 as the Peterborough plant will in-stall new equipment valued over $1.2 million to con-tinue to meet worldwide demand for its products across multiple industries in a variety of applications. The Tyrone plant will add conveyor construction to their production mix. The additional space will allow McCloskey to keep pace with the anticipated con-tinued double digit growth for 2013 2014. b

Shell and its affiliates plan to bring Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fuel one step closer for its ma-rine and heavy-duty on-road customers in North America by taking a final investment decision on two small-scale liquefac-tion units. These two units will form the basis of two new LNG transport corri-dors in the Great Lakes and Gulf Coast regions. This decision follows an invest-ment decision in 2011 on a similar corridor in Alberta, Canada. Shell is also work-ing to use natural gas as a fuel in its own operations.

Natural gas is an abun-dant and cleaner-burning energy source in North America, and Shell is lever-aging its LNG expertise and integrated strength to make LNG a viable fuel option for the commercial market, said Marvin Odum, Presi-dent, Shell Oil Company. We are investing now in the infrastructure that will allow us to bring this inno-vative and cost-competitive

fuel to our customers. In the Gulf Coast Cor-

ridor, Shell plans to install a small-scale liquefaction unit (0.25 million tons per annum) at its Shell Geis-mar Chemicals facility in Geismar, Louisiana, in the United States. Once opera-tional, this unit will supply LNG along the Mississippi River, the Intra-Coastal Waterway and to the off-shore Gulf of Mexico and the onshore oil and gas exploration areas of Texas and Louisiana. To service oil and gas and other in-dustrial customers in Tex-as and Louisiana, Shell is expanding its existing re-lationship with fuels and lubricants re-seller Martin Energy Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mar-tin Resource Management Corporation (MRMC). MRMC and its publicly traded affiliate, Martin Midstream Partners L.P. will provide terminalling, storage, transportation and distribution of LNG.

    Shell has a memoran-

dum of understanding with Edison Chouest Offshore companies (ECO) to supply LNG fuel to marine vessels that operate in the Gulf of Mexico and to provide what is anticipated to be the first LNG barging and bunkering operation in North America at Port Fourchon, Louisiana. The LNG transport barges will move the fuel from the Geismar production site to Port Fourchon where it will be bunkered into customer vessels.

In the Great Lakes Cor-ridor, Shell plans to install a small-scale liquefaction unit (0.25 million tons per annum) at its Shell Sarnia Manufacturing Centre in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Once operational, this proj-ect will supply LNG fuel to all five Great Lakes, their bordering U.S. states and Canadian provinces and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Interlake Steamship Com-pany is expected to be the first marine customer in this region, as it begins the con-version of its vessels.

Pending final regulatory permitting, these two new liquefaction units are ex-pected to begin operations and production in about three years.

Shell is also working to use LNG as a fuel in its own operations or to sup-port its operations. Offshore Support Servic-

es: Shell has chartered three dual-fuel offshore support vessels (STX SV310DF) from Harvey Gulf International Ma-rine utilizing Wrtsil engine and LNG system technology. These ves-

sels will be used to sup-port Shells operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Onshore Production: Shell has also begun to transition many of its onshore drilling rigs and hydraulic fracturing spreads to LNG. These conversions can reduce fuel costs and local emis-sions.Given Shells leading

expertise across the LNG value chain and its compet-itive position in the com-mercial fuel market, this extension into the North American market is a good

fit for Shell and its custom-ers. b

McCloskey International has officially named High Power Equipment (HPE) Africa as its sole Southern Africa distributor for its full line of crushing, screen-ing, stacking and recycling equipment.

HPE Africa will stock and distribute the entire range of McCloskey In-ternational equipment, which is divided into four main products groups that include stock piling con-veyors, crushers, trom-mel screens aimed at the organic and recycling markets and vibratory

screeners, which are aimed at the aggregate market.

McCloskey International Vice President of Sales John ONeill notes that Africa is a key target market for the company. To date, McClo-skey International has only had a small presence in Africa. Due to the compre-hensive product range that the company boasts, the decision was made to have full dealer support through HPE Africa in order to en-sure that local customers are being provided with full value added service.

    The McCloskey Inter-

national range of equip-ment augments HPE Af-ricas current offering to all of its existing markets, added HPE Africa McClo-skey Sales Manager Alan Straw. As the sole distrib-uter of the McCloskey In-ternational brand in South-ern Africa, HPE Africa has committed itself to being a full-stocking dealer, and will be furnished to pro-vide the support that is re-quired to properly maintain the McCloskey Interna-tional range of equipment and its customer relation-ships. HPE Africa will also

be keeping a full backup of stock to service all of these machines, while Mc-Closkey International has committed itself to provid-ing in-depth and compre-hensive training to all HPE Africa technicians, in or-der to ensure that they are fully certified on the entire range, he explains.

Straw believes that the McCloskey International range is ideally suited to the African market, due to the fact that it is user friendly and rugged. McCloskey In-ternational was established in Canada where machines are expected to withstand extreme temperatures in vastly remote areas. As a result, they have been de-signed to be reliable, op-erator friendly and easy to maintain. These are the fea-tures that African-based op-erations will be looking for in their machinery.

ONeill highlights the fact that McCloskey Inter-national selected HPE Af-rica as its local distributor of choice because the com-panies share similar busi-ness values. McCloskey International places a strong emphasis on building strong relationships with the end user and HPE Africa has a proven and unrivalled repu-

tation for customer service excellence across the conti-nent. Much like HPE Africa, McCloskey International is a privately owned company that also differentiates itself from large conglomerates by building personal customer relationships that ultimately lead to faster turnaround times and improved overall customer satisfaction, he continues.

Although the McClo-skey International range has only been available to the local market through HPE Africa for a matter of months, Straw adds that both companies have been pleasantly surprised by customer reaction to the brand to date. HPE Af-rica has already imported two direct feed screens for a customer in Durban, in addition to two jaw crush-ers and three S-Type hop-per fed screens for another customer in Johannesburg. There has also been a keen interest displayed from existing and potential cus-tomers, and we have had a large number of walk in enquiries from people that have seen the McClo-skey International range of equipment in the HPE Af-rica yard.

    The worlds largest

independent screening and crushing equipment manufacturer, McCloskey International experienced rapid its expansion in 2012, with sixty percent growth overall, a 30% increase in workforce and the addition of over 136,000 in square footage to its plants in Can-ada and Northern Ireland over the past year. McClo-skey will be completing an expansion project on its facility in Canada in 2013, before undertaking further expansion on the com-panys facility in Northern Ireland, in order to keep up with a sustained rise in global demand. Bear-ing these trends in mind, ONeill is confident of ob-taining measurable market share in Africa.

McCloskey Interna-tional has developed a tried and trusted reputation that has led to the company be-coming a dominant force in established markets such as North America and West-ern Europe. As investment in infrastructural develop-ment in Africa continues to rise at a rapid rate, I am confident that McCloskey International will provide exceptional value to this industry moving forward, he concludes. b

International mining executives are bracing for the negative impact the lack of a skilled workforce will have on their organiza-tions, according to new re-search published by BDO. Of the mining executives surveyed, 79 percent feel the lack of a skilled work-force will have a negative impact on their business this year. While environ-mental policy tops execu-tives domestic regulatory concerns, with 34 percent citing it as a potential issue in the year ahead, labour and employment issues are a close second, with 30 per-cent of executives noting it as a major concern.

The survey of 130 C-Level and senior financial executives at mining com-panies in the United States (U.S.), South Africa, United Kingdom (U.K.), Australia and Canada sought their insights on regulatory af-fairs, employment and the environment.

While executives around the globe grapple with labour and employ-ment issues, 63 percent of South African executives note this is their primary concern - twice the survey average due in large part to high regional unemploy-ment rates and sustained labour unrest driven by working conditions related

to wages and social issues.Mining executives are

facing labour shortages head-on with technology. The industry has an oppor-tunity to be at the forefront of innovation, improving both production and pros-pecting with new technolo-gies that will increase effi-ciency and produce greater returns. In fact, 50 percent of executives believe that substituting technology for labour will have a positive impact on their business in 2013, creating a new inter-section in the industry of old and new techniques.

We are in the midst of a transition in the mining in-dustry from a blue collar to a

white collar workforce, said Charles Dewhurst, Global National Resources Leader, Natural Resources industry group at BDO. With ad-vancements in technology from new software that makes prospecting easier, to advancements in mineral transportation the industry is at a critical juncture. Tech-nology, and the individuals who are skilled in develop-ing and utilizing these tools, is now more important than ever as demands for greater returns and increased pro-ductivity are forcing the in-dustry to innovate.

As commodity prices continue to rise, mining ex-ecutives desire to increase production to maximize revenues. With 30 percent of executives noting that new technology will im-prove profitability in 2013, many are reinvesting their profits into technology that will improve and sustain their business in the future.

Despite their broader concerns surrounding la-bour and employment, 42 percent of mining execu-tives believe that their total number of employees in 2013 will remain about the same, and 38 percent feel the size of their workforce will increase throughout the year.Mining executives split on environmental priorities

While 34 percent of in-ternational mining execu-tives are concerned about domestic environmental policies, where they will direct their resources to ad-

dress these concerns varies. Water pollution, including acid mine drainage and runoff, is the most-funded environmental initiative at 48 percent. Australia bucks this trend, with only a quarter of its executives citing it as a major project (25 percent). Instead, 38 percent of Australian ex-ecutives indicate that they are focused on ecosystem disruption, the second most prominent area of funding globally (23 per-cent). CO2 emissions round out the top three environ-mental concerns for mining executives, with one in five citing it as a major issue. In fact, South Africa recently began discussions on tax-ing carbon emissions, po-tentially making it one of the largest sources of tax revenue in the country.Other key findings from the survey include: Corporate Social Respon-

sibility programs focus on employees, local communities. Forty-six percent of mining ex-ecutives surveyed said that their corporate so-cial responsibility plans invest most heavily in employee health and safety programs. Com-munity outreach (30 per-cent) and environmental stewardship (18 percent)

rank second and third amongst investment ar-eas for the industry.

The United Kingdom cites anti-bribery/cor-ruption legislation as a top domestic regulatory concern. Of executives surveyed in the U.K., 23 percent cite this legisla-tion as a worry; triple the survey average of 7 percent. This reflects the fact that the U.K. implemented strict new anti-bribery laws with extra-territorial reach in late 2010. With much of the U.K.s mining opera-tions occurring beyond its borders, executives are closely monitoring regulatory developments that may impact the way they do business.

Resource nationalism impacting mining com-panies around the globe. Of executives surveyed, 61 percent note that re-source nationalism will have an impact on their businesses in 2013. Their concern also extends to tax imposition and in-creases: 67 percent an-ticipate an impact on their business this year as Australias super tax takes shape and coun-tries like South Africa plan for similar tax bur-dens. b

Forest, Paper & Pack-aging (FPP) CEOs are less confident about revenue growth over the next 12 months than their peers in other sectors, but are more optimistic about their com-panys revenue prospects in the next three years, ac-cording to PwCs 16th An-nual Global CEO Survey released recently in Davos, Switzerland.

    The CEOs of forest, pa-

per and packaging compa-nies are a resilient bunch. Recently theyve faced challenges such as shift-ing demand and markets, a bumpy economy, over-capacity, environmental is-sues and rising costs, said Bruce McIntyre, Leader of PwCs Forest, Paper and Packing practice in Cana-da. CEOs have identified their top three priorities: enhancing operational ef-

fectiveness, investing in innovation and R&D, and developing new business models. Improving operational ef-fectiveness and investing in R&D

McIntyre says, FPP CEOs are intensely focused on trimming any fat from operations. The survey found 92% of sector CEOs have implemented a cost-reduction initiative in the

past 12 months, and 89% are planning to in the com-ing 12 months. This result is higher than the overall average of 70% of CEOs across all sectors in the PwC survey. Some of the cost reduction reported was through staff cuts, which are expected to con-tinue, with 18% of FPP CEOs reporting plans to cut their workforce by more than 8% this year.

R&D and innovation is a top priority for 42% of FPP CEOs in the next 12 monthsa full 10% higher than the overall average across the entire CEO Sur-vey. Almost three-quarters of the FPP CEOs said they will make changes to in-crease capacity for innova-tion and R&D. Targeting pockets of op-portunity

Half of the FPP CEOs surveyed have entered into a new strategic alli-ance or joint venture in the past year, 34% completed a cross-border M&A and 32% completed a domestic M&A. The high degree of transactions and partner-ships reflects the broaden-ing uses being found for fibre such as bioproducts, biofuels, and textiles.

CEOs reported plans to conduct even more deals in the coming 12 months, with 58% contemplating a strategic alliance or joint venture, 47% a cross-bor-der M&A, and 34% a do-mestic M&A.

Other key findings from the FPP CEO Survey in-

    clude: Every FPP CEO sur-

veyed said that customer service was a key differen-tiator, the only sector in the full survey where 100% reported that customers in-fluence their strategy.

Seventy-five per cent of FPP CEOs worry that energy and raw material costs could pose a threat to growth, far more than the average across the overall survey sample.

Ninety-five per cent reported that supply chain partners are influencing their strategy, and the large majority of CEOs are in-creasing efforts to engage with them.

Nearly three quarters (71%) of FPP CEOs plan to increase their companys focus on reducing their environmental footprint, while 18% will continue at their current levels.

McIntyre concludes: While trends for the FPP sector are very similar in Canada to those found worldwide, there are some notable differences. We dont think staff reductions

will be as severe in Canada; in fact were hearing con-cern from some Canadian forest products companies about the looming short-fall of qualified labour. If the US housing market re-bounds and demand from China continues to grow we could have a labour shortage in Canada. Survey Methodology:

For PwCs 16th Annual Global CEO Survey, 1,330 interviews were conducted in 68 countries during the last quarter of 2012, in-cluding 38 FPP CEOs in 15 countries. This years survey looked at key items on CEO agendas around the world including confi-dence in growth, current threats like the availabil-ity of talent, approaches to leadership and the need to rebuild trust. By region, 449 interviews were con-ducted in Asia Pacific, 312 in Western Europe, 287 in North America, including 120 in Canada and 167 in the U.S., 165 in Latin Amer-ica, 95 in Central & Eastern Europe, 50 in Africa and 32 in the Middle East. b
