Beeline for seats: Passengers get on board a V/Line train at Woodend station. Commuters have complainedof overcrowding and a report warns peak-hour problems could worsen. Picture: Matthew Furneaux

Running out of elbow roomBY ANGELA VALENTE AND TARA MURRAY

V/LINE trains in the Macedon Ranges andSunbury areas are nearing capacity and won’tcope with future demand, says a report fromthe regional rail operator.

The report, obtained by the Greens underfreedom of information laws, says there will bepeak-hour problems even after the RegionalRail Link opens.

The link, which is slated to improve reliabil-ity of trains by separating regional and metro-politan train tracks, will open in 2016.

But the report says that when the regionallink opens there will only be one additionalV/Line train on the Bendigo line during peakhour.

Tom Gyorffy, who travels from Kyneton toMelbourne each day, says peak morning andafternoon trains are crowded.

‘‘At the moment, people can get seats [on aMelbourne-bound train], but towards the endof last year it was horrible.

‘‘You’re not guaranteed to get a seat onceyou get past Gisborne. People who get ontrains in Riddells Creek or Clarkefield arestanding.

‘‘I would hate to see how things will be whenschool and university resumes.’’

Greens MP Greg Barber said the strategicoperations plan showed a “limited increase” inservices and beyond 2018. V/Line would notbe able to fit any more trains on current lines.

The report recommends upgrades tostations in Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend.

More car parking is needed in the threetowns to cope with demand and a new waitingroom on platform 2 in Woodend is also recom-mended.

Also mentioned in the plan is track upgradesbetween Kyneton and Taradale, and Sunburyand Kyneton to meet the demand for com-muters travelling within regional areas.

A third track is recommended at Sunburystation to increase V/Line and metropolitanservices for Melbourne-bound passengers.

Developed by V/Line with Public TransportVictoria, the plan is a guide for annual opera-

tional planning of the regional rail network.Shadow transport minister Fiona Richard-

son said the plan called for upgrades just tokeep up with demand on the Bendigo line.

‘‘The Liberal government is continuing toignore the problem [on the Bendigo line] andhas still not put forward a plan to run addi-tional services.’’

At the previous census, only 8.3 per cent ofSunbury’s population and 7 per cent of Mace-don Ranges residents use train and bus servicesto commute to work.

But many commuters claim trains are pack-

ed in peak times. Sunbury Residents Associ-ation president Bernie O’Farrell said a thirdtrack from Sunbury to Melbourne was needed, but before 2020 when it was suggested in thereport.

He said many residents were complainingabout the ‘‘congestion of trains up the line’’since the electrification of the line.

‘‘A third track with the expansion in theSunbury population would be logical and longterm we will need more than three tracks.’’

Transport Minister Terry Mulder did notrespond by deadline.

PUNTERS voted with their feet at Hanging Rockon Australia Day as the Kyneton & HangingRock Racing Club moved on from the nasty sur-prises that had dogged it in recent years.

The track, a dead four, performed as expectedwhile local kangaroos, which had caused theAustralia Day meeting to be cancelled in 2011,did not join the thousands of racegoers this year.

Last year’s January 1 and 26 meetings werecalled off when holes were discovered under thetrack, but there were no unpleasant shocks orsurprises this year.

The crowd of about 4800 pushed the club’sfigures for the New Years Day and Australia Daymeetings to about 10,000, which had club chiefexecutive Mark Graham feeling invigoratedabout future dates at Hanging Rock.

‘‘It went without a hitch, a terrific day,’’ he

said. ‘‘The track’s performed well, the jockeyswere happy and the club is very pleased with thecrowd.’’

‘‘The track didn’t provide any shocks. We hada good idea what the weather would be five daysout but like any club we had challenges gettingirrigation out onto the track in the strong windsand high temperatures . . . watering during thenight when the wind wasn’t quite as strong.

‘‘We’ve had some challenges beyond the club’scontrol, unusual challenges and to get the turn-out to the meetings this year shows how commit-ted the community is to racing at the track.’’

The attention of the club now turns to theWoodend Cup meeting to be held this Saturdayat Kyneton.

Leigh Childs-trained 5yo grey Zlatan ($3.50)with Jake Duffy on board won the NMITHanging Rock Cup from Builder O’Reilly andThe Wingman.

‘‘I’m originally from New Zealandand this is my 50th year in Australia,so it’s a real feather in the cap. It’sstarted the year off well.

‘‘I love the work I do. Over the yearsI’ve helped a lot of families bring relat-ives to Australia..’’

In 2001, Mr Free beat prostate can-cer and joined the Broadmeadows

Many warmwelcomesBY TARA MURRAY

Happy birthday: Marj Tranter, Helen Stubbs andVarea Nock are ready for the big party.

Picture: Michael Copp

A LOT has changed in Sunbury since HelenStubbs, Marj Tranter and Varea Nockstarted as volunteers at the Sunbury VisitorInformation Centre.

The three have been volunteering for 19years at the centre, which celebrates its 20thbirthday next month.

‘‘It [the town] was always known as thevillage. When we first started you could sendpeople down to Emu Bottom no matter whattime and they would do different things. Now it’s completely different,’’ Ms Trantersaid.

Ms Nock added: ‘‘The biggest things arethe changes since we started. There’s been somany from the old to the new Sunbury — thebig growth in the town and population.’’

The centre was started after the closure ofthe Sunbury Court House in 1989.

Community members and a group calledFriends of the Sunbury Court House unitedto save the historic building and, with thethen Shire of Bulla, decided to turn it into aninformation centre.

The information centre opened on Febru-ary 21, 1993.

‘‘I was looking for something extra to doand it seemed a nice place to work [as avolunteer],’’ Ms Stubbs said. ‘‘You had toapply and I started the following week andloved it from the start.’’

Local businesses and community groupshave been supportive of the work they do.

‘‘If there’s a new bed-and-breakfast we gotry it out, so we can tell people what it’s like,’’Ms Tranter said.

The centre’s anniversary celebrations willbe held from 11am-2pm on February 24 at43 Macedon Street, Sunbury.

‘First class’ stationtops the wish-listBY ANGELA VALENTE

A REVAMP of the Macedon railway stationcould be on the cards if Macedon and MountMacedon residents agree.

A community ‘brainstorming session’ willbe held by the Macedon/Mount MacedonCommunity Planning Group next month togauge ideas on how to improve the com-munity’s assets.

Group chairwoman Mandi Mees says theworkshop is open to all residents who canput forward ideas to help implement thecommunity plan.

Ideas include revamping the railwaystation, introducing a ‘rhythm and rail’festival, creating more places for the arts andsetting up a community fire strategy.

“We want to open up the lines of commu-nication and discuss the ideas and get creat-ive together.

‘‘We want to get feedback on some of theideas that we have.

“We have a lovely old station in Macedon

with huge heritage value. But there’s no onelooking out for it. It’s not amazing; it doesn’treally welcome guests here.”

Horticulturist Stephen Ryan will speak atthe session on how communities cantransform “useful places into beautifulplaces”.

A barbecue lunch will be provided beforethe session starts.

Ms Mees said all ideas collected on the daywould form part of a project developmentand implementation plan.

Residents have been invited to get involvedin delivering the projects.

INSIDESTORY

Bride and joy: weddingReally want to save the date?Savvy brides are turning toprofessionals. SARAHHARRIS discovers the latest inaisle style.

Joanie Lim puts the finishing touches to the table settings. Picture: Cathy Jackson

Across the midsummer lawn a party troopsdelightedly following the prompts to theMansion Hotel and Spa pavilion, where an

enchanted vision unfolds.Elegant white candlesticks, flanked by flowers

in hollowed birch logs intermingled with mossand organic twists of grapevine, evoke a Puckishplayfulness as the light flickers invitingly in vin-tage etched-pink votive glasses.

The atmosphere is one of warm, relaxedcelebration without ostentation and, as they taketheir seats, guests agree it’s entirely in keepingwith the personalities of the bridal couple.

Indeed, it’s exactly as lawyer Clare Neal mighthave arranged her wedding . . . if only she had thetime.

It was not long after Clare and husband-to-be,finance analyst James Samson, set the date fortheir Werribee Park nuptials that they decided toenlist the services of a wedding planner.

“It was a time-management thing,” Clare says,“not that I didn’t want to do it.”

“I work full-time and my hours are incrediblyunpredictable. There just wasn’t the time to lookat three different florists, design how I wantedthe ceremony to look, co-ordinate all the ven-dors.”

Clare’s search for a solution led her to JoanieLim of One Wedding Wish.

“One of the key reasons I picked her was I hadan idea of her style and aesthetic from thewebsite. She’s very, very particular and that’swhat I really liked. From the initial meeting andthe questions she asked she was able to pick thekind of things I would pick.”

Having Joanie and her team on board meantClare was able to work right up to the weddingon January 19 without stress and distraction.

“It’s such a big, big day and to have someonecare about it as much as you really helps.

“Going in I was thinking, oh, a wedding plan-ner – that’s a bit extravagant, but it hasn’t been atall and the time-value, quality and peace of mindyou get is a major asset.”

Even if Marina Morkos was not working inter-state and her fiance Brad Burns on secondmentoverseas, she would still want a planner for herFebruary 23 wedding — also at Werribee Park.

“I wouldn’t be able to do it by myself even if Iwas in Melbourne,” Marina says.

“How am I going to go about hiring certainthings from certain companies? I would not havea clue where I should begin, and being such a big

day I want it to be perfect.”“I chose Joanie because this is her profession.

She is very good at what she does and that’s whatI wanted.

“I’m in real estate sales and people look at meto do basically the same thing — that’s takingcare of their most expensive asset.

planners to the rescue

James Samson and Clare Neal enjoy their wedding day at Werribee Mansion Hotel. Picture: Daniel Sheehan

In contrast to their great-grandparents’ genera-tion, today’s bride and groom are older, morestyle-conscious and cashed up when they marry.

Accordingly, weddings are becoming moreexpensive and elaborate as, irrespective of theprevailing economic climate, couples continue tofunnel cash towards the big event.

With the average Australian wedding last yearcosting just over $36,000, there’s a lot more than

romantic expectations riding on the day.According to the market research firm Ibis-

world, the 19,000 Australian couples expected towalk down the aisle in 2012-13 represent$4.3 billion in revenue for the wedding industry.

With a bachelor of commerce degree and amasters of marketing behind her, Joanie Limbrings some vital hard skills to the bride andgroom’s table as well as an undisputed sense of

style. Her business acumen, event planningexperience — which includes once setting up anice bar in the desert for a corporate client — andeye for creative detail came together when shestarted One Wedding Wish after her own 2009nuptials.

“I engaged a wedding stylist for my own wed-ding,” Joanie says. “It was a case of knowingwhat I wanted, but understanding there was no

way I could be the bride, be having my make-updone and all the preparations in the morning andstill be there to get it all set up.’’

Couples can choose between a stand-alonestyling service or the end-to-end package includ-ing styling, planning and co-ordinating.

“As soon as they sign on we sit down and Ihave a spreadsheet that I put together myself andwe do a line to line costing, covering every com-ponent from her wedding dress, their rings, whatbudget is allocated for the honeymoon, cateringcosts, venue hire, bridal cars, flowers, celebrant, church fees.”

Seeing their dream expectations translated intoreal dollars for the first time can sometimes comeas a shock to couples. “It is quite difficult for acouple without a planner to know how muchthings are going to cost,” Joanie says.

“A lot of the stress is taken away throughorganisation and pre-planning.

“For the bride and groom it’s all about thatpeace of mind. It is knowing someone is therethat they can trust.’’

Hospital feelsfinancial painWESTERN Health, which runs the Sunbury DayHospital, will close 70 beds and cancel 1300 electivesurgeries in the next six months across its four hospitalsas the effect of government funding cuts kicks in.

Western Health is expected to lose $6.46 million fromthe Sunbury, Sunshine, Footscray and Williamstownhospitals following changes announced at the end of lastyear.

The state government said it would lose $107 millionout of its health budget because of changes to federalfunding, which were based on new population datafrom last year’s census. The federal government, however, maintains funding for Victorian hospitals hasactually increased.

The Western Health chief executive, Associate Pro-fessor Alex Cockram, said steps had been taken immedi-ately to minimise the impact on patients.

‘‘Our leadership team has spent countless hoursreviewing every possible option in order to attempt toachieve the savings while having the least impact onpatient care, but there is no easy choice here,’’ she said.

A Western Health spokeswoman declined to commenton possible job losses at the Sunbury hospital or divulgewhere beds would be closed.

About 200 staff in public hospitals across the state areexpected to lose their jobs.

Real Estate Today

This is essential for investors leasing out their property. There are a few practical hints which help

maximise rental income and minimise tenant turnover. Some are:

Charge a fair rent -Check the market in the area of your property and determine a fair rental. If you

overcharge, you may have a higher attrition rate and vacancy factor.

Check your property thoroughly -Make sure all appliances are safe and in working order. Carry out routine

maintenance when necessary. Make sure the property is clean inside and out. A good tenant will look for a

good landlord. A professional approach and attitude tells a tenant that the place will run smoothly.

Be approachable -Make sure your tenant is comfortable. You don’t have to be friends, but make sure your

tenant feels able to ring you if needed. Ensure you attend to requests immediately when they are fair.

Use checklists -Have a set procedure for a rental application, and use a standard industry lease form.

Check all references, and speak to the previous landlord.

Inspect your property -Do this every 6 months or so, and your tenants will know you’re interested and

keeping an eye on things. Simple? Yes, but it can be time consuming. For a small commission, we do all

the above and more. We can attend to payment of all property expenses, including rates, insurance and

repairs. We relieve you of the burden of management. If I can be of service in any real estate matter, feel

free to phone me, John Dunlop, on 9744 2555 or to call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for

immediate attention.

Just like sparkling newIt’s easy to take a shine to this gorgeous house, writes Carole Levy

2 Honeysuckle Lane, WoodendBedrooms: 3Bathrooms: 2 plus powder roomsLiving areas: Study, lounge-dining, family-meals,conservatoryThe rest: Zoned ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, two-person spa, triple garage, shed, sealed parking areas, bore, underground watering systemPrice: $960,000Private saleAgent: Joan Gladman Real Estate Woodend, 5427 4307

Honeysuckle House may have seven candleson the cake but it looks as if it’s just beenborn, so pristine is its appearance.

This sparkle — with an innate elegance reflec-ted in window furnishings, plush carpet, mess-mate floorboards, bay windows, a wall niche andthe softest grey and white colour palette —makes this house something just that bit special.

The 5216-square-metre block encompasseswell-planned gardens destined to get evenprettier over time, enough sealed driveway andparking spaces for a fleet of cars (although thereis a triple garage), sandstone retaining walls andsweeping lawns.

Beyond the leadlight front door, the entry hallgives way to a carpeted lounge-dining room thatthen opens to the casual living hub.

The smart kitchen has a classic black andwhite colour combo, an island servery benchunder a bulkhead, lots of ergonomic drawers,walk-in pantry, appliance cupboard, dual-drawer dishwasher, an induction cooktop andself-cleaning pyrolitic oven: entertaining andfamily cooking all sewn up.

The laundry is big and has enough storage andworkspace to chase away wash-day blues.

Off the meals area, a back veranda has beenentirely enclosed with glass and, with tiles under-

foot, has the feel and grace of a conservatorylooking out to colourful garden beds plantedwith hydrangeas and ferns.

A carpeted study, main bathroom with an ovalspa set against a glass-brick wall, and three bed-rooms are down one end. Two bedrooms havewalk-in fitted wardrobes and the main is agenuine haven. The walk-in wardrobe qualifiesas a dressing room and the big en suite has aglass-brick wall and dual vanity basins.

The property is just off the Avenue of Honour, well screened from traffic by dense shrubberyand trees, and is a quick drive to Woodend’svillage-style shopping centre.
