Regulator puts lid on water pricesBY TARA MURRAY

PROPOSED water bill increases byWestern Water have been knockedback by the Essential Services Com-mission.

Released last week, the PriceReview 2013: Greater MetropolitanWater Businesses Draft Decisionproposes a lesser rise in tariffs than theones proposed by Melbourne’s fourwater companies, including WesternWater.

The Western Water catchment areaincludes Sunbury, Macedon Ranges,Moorabool and Melton.

In December, Western Water pro-posed that its bills would rise by6.2 per cent a year for the next fiveyears.

At the time Western Water said theaverage yearly water bill was expectedto increase from $942 in 2012-13 to

$1275 in 2017-18. In the commis-sion’s report it said that under WesternWater’s plan, yearly bills for owner-occupiers would rise from $991 in2012-13 to $1356 in 2017-18.

Under the draft proposal, water billswill increase by a total of $42 between2012-13 and 2017-18.

Those renting will also save over$100 under the commissions draft’sdecision, with average yearly bills setto be $328.

Under Western Water’s plan thoserenting would see their bills rise from$280 in 2012-13 to $436 in 2017-18.

Western Water managing directorNeil Brennan said the commission hadfound lower costs for water should bepassed onto customers.

‘‘The ESC’s draft determination sug-gests Western Water will not need topay as much tax or as much for watersupplied by Melbourne Water as the

draft water plan 2013-18 had forecast.“As a result of these lower costs, theESC has recommended we limit pricerises over the next five years to around0.8 per cent plus inflation a year for anaverage residential customer.’’

“It has recommended some changesto capital spending and operatingcosts, and we are now going throughthe detail of this to understand exactlywhat it will mean for our futureplans.”

He said the commission hadapproved some of Western Water’swater plan. ‘‘The ESC recommenda-tions approve Western Water’s plansfor tiered water use pricing and fixedsewerage tariffs but suggest somechanges to proposed price rises.’’

Mr Brennan said customers shouldremember these figures were not finaland may change when the ESCprepares its final determination.

Commission chairman Ron Ben-David said the commission had identi-fied potential reductions.

“On the basis of the savings we haveidentified, typical household bills willincrease by about $100 less than isproposed by the water businesses.

“Besides ensuring all water busi-nesses have measures in place to sup-port customers who may havedifficulty paying their bills, the com-mission proposes to allow an addi-tional $5 million in 2013–14 formetropolitan retailers to assist lowincome and vulnerable customers tomanage the impact of the proposedprice increases.’’

The ESC will hand down its finaldecision in June.

The ESC is holding an informationsession for residents at 6pm onApril 30 at Goonawarra Golf Club.

Keeping year 9 students interested in science class is a hard

thing to do. So Sunbury College science teacher Adrian

Daniell decided to use rockets, an idea that literally took off

throughout last week. Dr Daniell said the rockets helped

students study chemical reactions by making tiny solid fuel

rockets from scratch, with all the materials coming from the

school. The mini rockets are capable of travelling up to 80

metres in the air.

Logjam on code 1 ambo callsBY TARA MURRAY

SUNBURY and Macedon Ranges residents arewaiting more than 15 minutes for an ambulance, new figures show.

The figures, released by the state oppositionunder Freedom of Information, show that everyambulance station in Sunbury and the MacedonRanges did not meet the 15-minute target set forcode 1 calls in the second half of 2012.

Romsey had the longest waiting time, with theaverage wait for code 1 calls 19.50 minutes fromJuly to December last year.

This is up from 2009-10, when the waitingtime was 19.20.

Kyneton residents were waiting on average17.05 minutes, up from 16.05 in 2009-10.

Sunbury residents had the biggest increase inwaiting times with the Sunbury unit’s waitingtime 16.03 minutes, up from 12.05 in 2009-12,

and Jackson Creek’s increasing from 10.55 to15.43 over the same period.

Waiting times in Woodend and Gisborne drop-ped, with Woodend’s response time falling from16.50 minutes to 16.25 and Gisborne’s from 16minutes to 15.30.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said thedocuments show why one in four ambulancesfailed to meet the government’s target ofresponding to life-threatening or code 1 emer-gencies within 15 minutes.

“Before the last election, the Coalition saidVictorians deserve the highest quality ambulanceservices and have the right to expect timelyresponses during emergencies,” Mr Andrewssaid.

“However, under Mr [Denis] Napthine, thenumber of ambulances arriving at the sceneof a life-threatening emergency within 15minutes has dropped to 74.8 per cent, a blow-out

of almost 6 per cent since 2010.’’Although the figures show increased waiting

times, the state government says the data isinaccurate.

Government spokeswoman Justine Sywak saidthe figures didn’t give a clear indication of wait-ing times.

‘‘Labor was being deceitful by comparing fullyear figures with only six months of data, whichfails to take into account pressure and seasonalimpacts on the system at different times of theyear and population growth.

‘‘Mr Andrews’ comments are nothing buthypocritical and as he well knows, the recent2010 auditor-general’s report was highly criticalof Labor for the crisis it created in the ambulanceservice, which he oversaw as health minister.’’

She said while there were increases in growthareas, she expected a drop in figures afterupgrades to ambulance stations such as Sunbury.

Customers indark as bankshuts doors

Unhappy customers: Bryan Lockwood, Helen Davis, Francis Tickle, Joy Crossleyand Bev Phillips don’t want the MECU bank to close. Picture: Paul Rovere

SUNBURY residents have voicedtheir frustrations at the impendingclosure of MECU bank.

On April 18, customers receiveda letter from the bank’s manage-ment that it would close on June 28due to falling numbers.

Customer Bev Phillips said shewas shocked at the decision as therewas no consultation. ‘‘It’s a mem-bership bank and there was no con-sultation, just a letter saying it wasclosing,’’ Ms Phillips said.

‘‘They gave us a number to con-tact and they basically said bad luckit’s closing.

‘‘We were told when MECU tookover the bank from Regional 1 in2009 there would be no branch

closures, but now this ishappening.’’

She said many people wereunaware of the changes and othershad started closing their accounts. The nearest branch is atWatergardens. ‘‘I spent a bit of time

at the branch [after getting the let-ter] and had a chance to talk toother customers.’’

She said an elderly man could notgo to Watergardens as he was in ascooter. ‘‘I witnessed multipleaccount closures and very unhappy

people. A few people had not evenreceived a letter and were totallyunaware of the impending closure.

‘‘Business people had said theywould not go to Watergardens asthey could not afford to close theirbusiness for that amount of time.’’

MECU’S general manager oflending and personal banking JohnYardley said the bank expectedsome customers to go elsewhere.

‘‘Part of the agreement at the time[when we took over Regional 1]was there would be no closures. Itwas never an ongoing agreementand that was over three years ago.

‘‘It’s always tough and we cannothave a branch in every corner. Wetried really hard with the Sunburybranch, but have never been able toget the numbers.’’

He said that customers couldhave been consulted, but it wouldhave caused more uncertainty as thesituation could not have beenrectified.

Tidy sum for school spruce-upBY ANGELA VALENTEAND TARA MURRAY

Back to school: Woodend Primary School principal Andy Kozak andgrade 2-3 pupils with Martin Dixon and Donna Petrovich. Picture: Paul Rovere

A BACKLOG of maintenance workswill be fixed at Macedon Ranges andSunbury schools with a share in$2.5 million in funding announced for10 schools in the region.

The state government funding wasannounced in February, but a list ofthe 10 schools was revealed only lastweek.

Kyneton Secondary College is thebiggest winner in the Ranges, with aninjection of more than $600,000 formaintenance works. Sunbury PrimarySchool attracted $497,000, the biggestallocation of funds for the town.

A long and hard campaign for fund-ing at Woodend Primary School haspaid off with $300,000 to replace adilapidated portable music room, fixpainting, guttering and rottingexternal timber. The Weekly has previ-ously highlighted the poor conditionof the school.

Parent Rebecca Colless, who was onthe school council last year, said it‘‘lobbied hard’’ by sending emails andphotos of the decaying school topoliticians and circulating a petition.

‘‘This isn’t a special gift or a newgrant. It’s the money owed to theschool for a long time,’’ she said.

‘‘It is the government’s responsibil-ity to maintain our public schools in asafe and presentable condition, in atimely fashion. I can’t congratulate thegovernment for doing their job, whenwe have had to nag them to do it.’’

Principal Andy Kozak welcomedthe funding but said that several areasthroughout the school were below the‘fair condition threshold’ the govern-ment had set.

‘‘It’s a start but we need much more.

We’ve been told these buildings andsite infrastructure would be con-sidered in programs for funding infuture years.’’

The Coalition government said itwould repair, rebuild or replace everygovernment school building in poorcondition with the $51.5 million state-wide investment.

Education Minister Martin Dixonvisited Gisborne and Kyneton Second-ary Colleges and Woodend and Rom-sey primary schools on Wednesday.

Northern Victoria MP DonnaPetrovich said she was ‘‘proud to be

part of a government that takes educa-tion seriously and is willing to makepractical investments into our educa-tion system’’.

Sunbury College principal StephenSmith said the $363,000 funding forhis school was a start.

‘‘The money is definitely welcomedand we are happy they have acknowl-edged the school needs it.

‘‘Perhaps there are some issues thatneed to be looked at first. We need toreplace some buildings.’’

The school’s science building, whichis about 40 years old, has uneven

floors and the windows are glued shut.‘‘I’m not sure if it’s going to the

science wing, which is what I wouldhave wanted it to go to.

‘‘We have the chance to negotiatewith the government and think thereare some more pressing needs, like thescience wing.’’

Sunbury and Macedon RangesSpecialist School will get $416,000 tofix the ageing Sunbury campus. Prin-

cipal Joanne Nolan said $21,000 ofthe total funding was earmarked forthe Bullengarook campus.

‘‘We are so thrilled that we will beable to address these maintenanceissues.

‘‘I haven’t been able to wipe thesmile off my face since we were noti-fied of the outcome and I can’t wait toshare the news with our schoolcommunity.’’

Ranges puts out abigger welcome matBY ANGELA VALENTE

GROWING tourism is a high priority in theDaylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional Tour-ism Board’s five-year roadmap.

The strategic paper, which guides tourismacross the region, was developed with help fromMacedon Ranges, Hepburn, Moorabool andHume councils, residents and tourism operators.

Tourism board chief executive Kerry I’Ansonsaid the industry needed to be protected andgrown. ‘‘Tourism is still growing and we havedifferent rates of growth. We have seen steadygrowth in leisure-based tourism and what we callvisiting friends and relatives.’’

Daylesford and Macedon Ranges tourismattracts more than three million visitors a year.

Leisure-based tourism makes up about 38 percent of all visitors to the region.

Leisure visitors are those who arrive for relax-ation and holidays for the day or overnight.

‘‘Visiting friends and relatives’ tourism makesup 40 per cent of visitors and are hostedprivately,’’ Ms I’Anson said.

‘‘Residents spend extra money to support theirvisitors. We need more people to be coming here,we need them to be staying longer and spendingmore.

‘‘We’re building the tourism industry to notonly attract people to come here, but supportthem. We need to make sure that businesses aremeeting the current consumer trends.’’

The plan states that Daylesford-MacedonRanges is most recognised for its spa and well-being experiences. It is celebrated for its naturalspring water, gourmet food, boutique wines, accommodation and natural trails and parks.

The tourism board’s chairman, Noel Harvey, said a goal was to continue maintaining theregion’s position as Australia’s leading spa andwellbeing destination.

‘‘We appreciate that spa experiences may notresonate across the entire region which is why weare increasing the emphasis on the naturally reju-venating wellbeing experiences and offerings thatcan be found throughout the region.’’

Tourism provides employment for about 7 percent of the regional workforce.

debutante ball last Friday. The boys were among 33 young couples who stepped onto the dance floor.

‘‘We’re pretty excited,’’ year 11 student Michael said in the lead-up to the night. ‘‘We have had

rehearsals since last term. They have been pretty easy to get down pat, though there were some

people who stepped on feet at the start.’’

BY TARA MURRAY ‘It all adds up to a tremendouscommunity effort and all should becongratulated.’ — Frank Donovan

AN estimated 4000 people turned out at the MtMacedon Anzac Day dawn service last Thursdayto remember conflict and sacrifice.

Event chairman and Vietnam veteran FrankDonovan said there had been overwhelmingsupport for the day, with attendance rising morethan 50 per cent.

‘‘In a moving service, the school captains fromGisborne Secondary and Braemar College readcorrespondence and reflections from the Firstand Second World Wars and from the currentAfghanistan conflict.

‘‘To mark the 60th anniversary of the KoreanWar, often dubbed ‘the forgotten war’, 340 roseswere placed at the base of the Memorial Cross inmemory of the number of Australian dead.’’

Dr Donovan said more than 30 organisationshelped with the service, including schools, emergency services and RSL clubs from acrossthe shire.

“We want the greatest possible communityparticipation in this important regional com-memorative service.

“It all adds up to a tremendous communityeffort and all should be congratulated.’’

He said organisers would look at expanding

the free bus service that was on trial this year.“We will continue to examine ways in which

we can improve access to the venue for patronsvia the only access road, Cameron Drive.

‘‘These include increasing the number of freebuses and telecasting the service into venuesacross the Macedon Ranges.’’

Crowds also flocked to Sunbury, where theattendance was a record.

Sunbury RSL president Graeme Williams saidmore than 2000 people attended the march andservice, including local community groups andschools.

‘‘One person commented that when the marchwas going down the street to the cenotaph, itlooked like an army. It was one of the biggestmarches we have had.’’

He said support from the community had beenamazing and the branch raised more than$33,000 in the lead-up to the day.

White line fever

They’ve been called every bad word known to man and are often the scapegoat when things don’t go a fan’s way. But for a chosen few, football umpiring is a passion. Stephanie Zevenbergen hears the stories from on and off the fi eld

It’s 2005 at the MCG and Essendon is getting ready to take on Hawthorn. First-time AFL fi eld umpire Troy Pannell is standing in front of 70,000 screaming fans. To say there are butterfl ies in his stomach is an understatement. He’s never been

more nervous in his life. Then, with the blow of a whistle, the game begins and

the rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward seven years and Pannell, 36, is taking

umpiring in his stride. The Mount Macedon local is now umpiring one AFL

match a week and has his sights set on one day umpiring the grand fi nal.

It started off 22 years ago as a way to make some extra money, but now AFL umpiring has turned into a passion for Pannell.

‘‘I played junior footy like every other kid,’’ he says. ‘‘We lost four grand fi nals in a row and I had enough.

‘‘The lure of making some pocket money on the weekends sort of appealed, so I stayed in the game that way.

‘‘Now I’m an elite decision-maker in Australia’s greatest game. There’s only 32 guys around Australia every year that get contracted by the AFL to umpire, so to be in that elite panel at the top level is awesome.’’

It’s not for the faint-hearted or people without a thick skin. Pannell knows copping fl ak from fans and players comes with the territory. But he tries not to listen to it.

‘‘I just tune it out,’’ he says. ‘‘From a spectator’s point of view you don’t really hear it, you hear a roar and that’s it. You can’t really hear the odd comment or two because there’s too many people around.

‘‘Even when I started I copped abuse from kids’ parents and it’s a shame because that’s still going on and that’s why we lose umpires.’’

In his 22 years of umpiring, Pannell has gone from strength to strength but admits he can still make an error in judgment here and there.

‘‘When you blow the whistle and you make a call you generally know at the time when you’ve made a mistake, but you can’t do anything about it.

‘‘You can’t stop it. Once it’s paid it’s paid and that’s it.

‘‘There’s always going to be mistakes, human error says that. You might not be in the right position, you might have your vision blocked by a player in front of you ... it’s about minimising the mistakes.

‘‘When it’s a major and obvious error that’s when the spotlight comes on us and that’s what we don’t want.’’

Fortunately, there have been many highs throughout his career – in fact, Pannell almost fi nds it diffi cult to recall one moment that stood out the most.

But umpiring a fi nal last September was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

‘‘That’s probably the standout. I’ve done a lot of big Friday night games, which have probably been a better game of football, but being recognised as being at the top of our panel and getting a fi nal last year was a highlight.’’

Like Pannell, Aaron Tucker of Bacchus Marsh umpired his fi rst football match in his late teens.

Asked by a high school teacher in Geelong if he wanted to umpire, Tucker obliged and has been doing it ever since.

Now a goal umpire in the Ballarat Football League, Tucker enjoys hearing the alarm early on a Saturday morning alerting him to another day on the fi eld.

He says it takes a certain type of person to be an umpire, one who knows the right way to tackle an issue.

‘‘I think you need to be a good communicator,’’ says Tucker, ‘‘because you have to deal with the players and the players don’t always do what you want them to do, but you don’t want to talk down to them.

‘‘You’ve also got to enjoy the game. You’ve got to understand the game.’’

Like all umpires, Tucker deals with the onslaught of abuse that’s often screamed at him by spectators. But that doesn’t deter him.

‘‘Ninety per cent of the fl ak comes from over the fence. You just put up a brick wall.

‘‘You hear it and some of the things you hear you probably wish you didn’t, but you focus on the game. You smile at them or to yourself and get on with it.’’

Tucker admits he has had words with spectators when he shouldn’t have.

He estimates he’s umpired about 600 games across his career and the highlight has been umpiring many VFL matches.

One issue that is important to Tucker is that young umpires get on board and commit to the profession.

Young people might not be aware that umpiring can lead to a great career, he says.

‘‘I just think people perhaps don’t want to be an umpire. They see it as daggy.

‘‘I really think that the education system needs to introduce it. They’re so focused on the playing side of sport, but there’s no focus on the offi ciating side. It would give kids another option if they’re not good enough to play.’’

Over in Sunbury at Salesian College, 14-year-old Abbey Garbutt is looking into exactly that option.

The Gisborne teenager is one of two girls at the school who train with the Riddell District Football League umpires.

So far Garbutt has umpired a practice match and a real match and says her fi rst time on the fi eld as a boundary umpire was a one-of-a-kind experience.

‘‘It’s a little daunting at fi rst when you walk onto a fi eld full of 18-year-old guys,’’ she says.

‘‘And I nearly got bowled over while boundary umpiring. But it’s good, it’s good to get yourself out there.’’

Garbutt is quickly learning to deal with spectators’ comments and is taking them in her stride, not letting them deter her from the job at hand.

‘‘You sometimes get negative remarks from spectators, not a lot but a little bit. You just kind of look at them and smile and shrug it off.

‘‘I haven’t had any confrontation with players though. None of them have been nasty or anything, so that’s good.’’

Garbutt got her start in umpiring this year after learning of the incentive of making some extra money on weekends.

At this stage, she’s not sure where umpiring will take her, but she plans to keep at it.

Claw back cuts, MPs sayBY TARA MURRAY

‘School facilities have not beenupgraded while they wait for thegreen light for theredevelopment.’ — Geoff Howard

‘This budget needs to undo thedamage done in the previous twobudgets to health and educationservices.’ — Joanne Duncan

EDUCATION should be a key focus in thestate budget next Tuesday, local MPs say.

Both Macedon MP Joanne Duncan andBallarat East MP Geoff Howard cite educa-tion as a key focus on their budget wishlists.

Ms Duncan wants funding reinstated in thehealth and education sectors.

‘‘We are seeking to have funding reinstatedfor MICA paramedics along the Calder Free-way, restoration of Victorian Certificateof Applied Learning (VCAL) and TAFE andTake a Break funding, as well as the cuts to theCFA.

‘‘Unfortunately a lot of this is to restoreservices to what they had been.

‘‘This budget needs to undo the damagedone in the previous two budgets to healthand education services.’’

Ms Duncan also called for traffic lights inSunbury at the intersection of Horne Streetand Gap Road and funding restored for carparking in Sunbury and neighbourhoodhouses in Romsey and Riddells Creek.

Mr Howard also called for VCAL andTAFE funding to be restored. The main issuehe wanted addressed was funding for stage

one of the Kyneton school plan. ‘‘Clearly theeducation community is anxious for this toproceed and in the meantime they have passedup on the federal government stimulus money,as under the plan it would not be appropriateto build a new facility on the primaryschool site.

‘‘School facilities have not been upgradedwhile they wait for the green light for theredevelopment of the secondary school site asthe site of the K-12 school.’’

Northern Victoria MP Donna Petrovichsaid she would push to continue fundingcommitments made at the previous election.

How to doublea gift’s value

A beaming little girl appears at mum’s bedside bright and early on Mother’s Day. Cradled in her arms is her favourite pink teddybear bearing a piece of toast dripping blobs of jam on the carpet. ‘‘Lulu-belle wanted to give you brekky in bed, too, mum. Happy Mother’s Day!’’A scene to melt the heart? A happy-tears story to share with other mums at the next coffee morning? Unmissable? Yes, yes and yes.Now let’s replay Mother’s Day brekky in bed with dad and much older children in starring roles.A tray laden with a plate of scrambled eggs on toast, sliced tomatoes and mushies on the side, a hot cuppa and even a rosebud peeking out of a tiny vase is delivered with a fl ourish and much fanfare from all. Mum feigns surprise (that wasn’t you all crashing about in the kitchen, was it?) and accepts her gift with a loving smile and grateful thanks.

And so a cherished, time-honoured tradition has been enacted for another year.But.......... and there is a but.Are the eggshells still strewn on the bench? Is there a pool of egg-white lurking where the mixing bowl still sits? Is the butter tub sitting out with the lid off and a knife plunged into it?In other words: Has the cleaning up been left to mum when she emerges from her toast crumb-spattered bed?Mums, god bless ‘em, are the most forgiving people on the planet and probably wouldn’t dream of pointing out the mess. Today she is Glowing Earth Mother surrounded by her proud clan. But I’ll dare to say it: The lovely gift of breakfast in bed is only truly a gift if it sports a tag declaring ‘‘No extra work was created in the making’’.Then mum’s glow could light a city....

first-home buyers an get additional savings starting from $600 to a maximum of just over $3,000 on

a house price at less than $600,000. First-home buyers can refer to the schedule provided at Victorian

Government’s State Revenue Office and can work out their stamp duty savings using this. Maximum

stamp duty savings are now over $9,000. Combined with the existing first-home owners’ grant of

$7,000 there is nearly $16,000 in savings for those first-home buyers who are willing to venture into

the property market in 2013. The stamp duty discount will rise to 40% on January 1, 2014, and to 50%

on September 1, 2014. To qualify for the stamp duty discount, first-home buyers must also qualify for

the $7,000 first-home owners’ grant. All added up it means Victorian first-home buyers purchasing an

existing home receive the highest amount of financial support from their state government. We at Dunlop

are very experienced in all aspects of the real estate market, so why not take advantage of our expertise,

contacts and depth of experience. Once you discuss with us your preferences, your price range and

what you require, we can assist you in your search for a home of your dreams. Feel free to call me, John

Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a discussion.

An arbour and English garden embrace two houses, writes Carole Levy

Two-in-one deal

Two discrete dwellings linked by a carportare merely the start of the benefits of thishistoric property, with the land (now about

1.2 hectares) having been owned by fivesuccessive generations. Initially, it contained aeucalyptus oil distillery.

Just down the road from Macedon Grammar, the houses are embraced by glorious Englishgardens, manicured grass around wonderfultrees, a secluded garden ‘room’, undulatinglawns down to a dam-cum-lily pond and awisteria-drenched arbour. Not to mention thenatural bush on the perimeters.

The larger house has a homey elegance, beinglow on bling (except for two perfect chandeliers),high on ambient spaces and with an engagingtwist of bohemian. A palette of slate and mochawith glossy black accents combines with timberpitched ceilings, exposed beams and bricks, aneclectic mix of window designs and placement,an atrium, unique fretwork and up-and-downfloor levels. And it all works harmoniously.

Living areas of lounge-dining, family, meals, breakfast and a superb home office (or big fourth

bedroom) each have their own magic. Thekitchen has a dishwasher, corner pantry, under-bench fridge, wall oven and electric cooktop.

Three bedrooms include the main with showerroom, walk-in wardrobe and deck access withblissful views; another has two areas linked by awalk-in wardrobe.

The second, older house has a large livingroom (new plush carpets and blockout blindsthroughout, as in the larger house) with fireplaceand a wood heater, a kitchen, bathroom, laundry, three bedrooms and a full-width deck.

Updated Liberty offers more for lessAlistair Kennedy road tests Subaru’s long-time popular seller

Taking liberties: Subaru Liberty has long been a favourite with Australian drivers.

Subaru Liberty has been a popular seller inAustralia for more than 20 years and hasattracted loyal buyers partly because it’s

just that little bit different from the mainstream. Not only with its boxer engine and all-wheeldrive but also because of its well-earnedreputation for toughness and reliability.

The latest, fifth generation, Liberty waslaunched in 2010 with annual tweaks to keep itup to date ahead of the next generation model, which is still a couple of years away.

The model year 2013 Liberty arrived here latelast year with some minor styling changes, hand-ling improvements and extra equipment.

As before, Liberty comes with a large choice ofvariants in either sedan or wagon bodies.

As before, two petrol engines are offered withcapacities of 2.5 and 3.6 litres, although the lat-ter, a six-cylinder unit, is now available only inthe Liberty X. The upgraded four-cylinder2.5-litre has managed the now-common combin-ation of increased power and torque withreduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Another big selling point for the 2013 Libertyis its price. Subaru has been able to trim priceswith the new entry-level Liberty 2.5i automaticsedan — $1000 cheaper than its previous manualequivalent and so $3000 cheaper than thecomparable automatic.

Externally, the new Liberty gets a new grille, front fog light surrounds and redesigned alloywheels. Inside there is a revised steering wheeldesign, one-touch lane-change indicator andelectro-luminescent gauges with an integrated3.5-inch colour monitor.

Subaru’s EyeSight safety system has now beenextended further into the Liberty range.

On the road, Subaru Liberty has a real luxuryfeel to it, enhanced by improvements in noise, vibration and harshness levels.

While it’s not what you call a driving enthusi-ast’s car, nevertheless the underlying drivingexperience is one of confidence in the key areasof handling and safety.

Prices start at $32,990, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.

A DEPLETED Sunbury side did what no otherteam had done since 2009 on Saturday — beatRedan on its home turf.

In the highly anticipated grand final rematch, the Eastern Lions overcame a one-goal deficithalfway through the final term to power theirway to a 15-point victory.

In a blustery affair at City Oval, Sunbury even-tually won 15.9 (99) to Redan’s 12.12 (84).

In a seesawing match, Sunbury had at onestage kicked six out of the eight goals in the lastquarter and led by 22 points.

Redan kicked two quick goals through DeanChester in a last-ditch comeback effort, but whenJordan Baumgartner goaled for Sunbury in thedying moments, the game was done and dusted.

Sunbury coach Rick Horwood said the winwas in the top three home-and-away wins he hadbeen a part of at the club.

With seven premiership players missing fromthe line-up, it was left to the likes of the seasonedcampaigners Jay Cheep, Pat Cariss and even new

recruit Andrew Duhau to steer the ship. Andsteer it they did.

‘‘You’ve got to be led by your leaders in gameslike that and I think the guys did that so well,’’Horwood said.

‘‘When you’ve got two first-gamers, another inhis second game, it’s really important for thesenior guys to step up.

‘‘There wouldn’t be too many teams come toCity Oval and walk away with four points.’’

For Redan, ruckman Brett Dickinson contin-ued his good early season form against thedominant Cariss, while the two Matthewsbrothers (Joel and Dean) provided rebound fromhalfback.

Jarrod Edwards was effective in patches, although coach Eammon Gill admitted the four-time Henderson medallist was not fully match fit.

‘‘Their [Sunbury’s] skills were a lot moreefficient than ours. I’m not sure why. Maybe it itwas because they have played that extra game.’’

Before Saturday, the last side to beat Redan athome, apart from Sunbury in 2011, was Darleyback in 2009. — Ballarat Courier

PREMIERS Macedon scored adecisive 14-point victory over Rom-sey in the Riddell District NetballLeague A Grade grand finalrematch on Saturday.

Macedon won by just threepoints in the decider in Septemberlast year but last week were the bet-ter team in a 50-36 win.

Only in the second quarter didRomsey look dangerous. After trail-ing by six points at quarter-time theRedbacks outscored Macedon 13-6to bring the margin back to a point, but the Cats ran away with it in thesecond half.

Amy Smith (33) and Karli Denzel(17) did the scoring for Macedonand Romsey skipper Hope Hamil-ton led the way for her team with26 goals.

Macedon netball operationsmanager Trevor Toholka said thewin, as well as wins in B and Cgrade, showed the Cats will be aforce again this season.

“It was a good test for us to stepup today. We had a few players outtoday and it’s early in the season sowe’re not going to take too muchout of it but it’s good to know weare heading in the right direction.”In other games, Sunbury beltedRockbank 55-16 on Anzac Day.Kila Elavo hit 36 goals. IT was a day of mixed fortunes forRomsey on Saturday, beating Mace-don by 61 points but losing on-ballerAsh McNaughton through injury.

Young David Broos was the star forthe Redbacks, dominating in the ruckin a best-on-ground performance.Matt Davidson also booted eightgoals.

McNaughton went down early inthe third quarter and immediatelycalled for help. He was stretchered offthe ground and taken to hospital afterthe game.

The club confirmed on Sunday thathe had ligament damage in his ankleand could be out for six to eightweeks.

It came just a week after MatthewBlair broke his fibula just above theankle in what could be a season-ending injury.

But on the field Romsey lookedextremely impressive. Still missing keyplayers, including skipper Steve Bur-lak, the Redbacks outclassed the here-tofore unbeaten Cats in blusteryconditions.

Macedon kicked with a four-to-fivegoal wind in the opening term but waswasteful in front of goal, allowingRomsey to take an unlikely seven-point lead into quarter time.

Romsey blew the game open in thesecond quarter with a six-goal-to-twoterm to take a 36-point lead into half-time. The Cats won the third quarterbut wasted several opportunities infront of goal.

Coach Alistair Meldrum missedseveral shots and, at one stage, whenthe Cats attempted to run into goal, they were smothered three times in a

minute by Redback defenders.Romsey put the result beyond doubt

early in the last quarter with David-son, Cameron Dawson and ChrisPetroro all goaling in the openingminutes.

Redbacks coach Mark Pederson

was full of praise for his younger play-ers.

“I thought our intensity around theball was very good and we’ve beenworking on what we’re doing whenwe haven’t got the ball, talking, block-ing, shepherding.’’

Rupo hitsits strapsBY DANIEL PAPROTH

RUPERTSWOOD got its firstRiddell District Football League winon Saturday, belting a hapless Lance-field by 52 points.

After losses to Sunbury and Mace-don in the opening rounds, Ruperts-wood played its best football for theseason against the Tigers, who werenever in the hunt.

Rupo established its dominanceearly. In the first quarter alone it had10 scoring shots to none, and but forinaccurate kicking — 3.7 — wouldhave been comfortably ahead atquarter-time.

Rupo piled on another six goals inthe second term to extend the lead to35 points at the main break.

By three-quarter-time that hadgrown to 55 points to put the resultwell beyond doubt.

Lancefield scored a few late goalsto win the final quarter but the dam-age had long been done.

Todd Podolczak was best onground with six goals for Rupo, while key forward Leigh Brennanbooted four.

At Harley Hammond Reserve,Diggers Rest came away with aseven-point win over Broadford, despite nine goals from Barry Hallfor the home side.

It was Hall’s second game in theblue and white and he took hisseason tally to 19 goals — equalwith Melton Centrals’ AdamFenton, though his 19 have comefrom four games.

In a tight, see-sawing contest thelead changed on several occasions. The Burras led by four points atquarter-time and trailed by 13 athalf-time after being outscored inthe second quarter.

Diggers Rest got back within apoint at the final break and did justenough to edge its way in front, kicking five goals to four for theterm. Brent Tuckey booted five forthe victors.

Melton Centrals kept Kilmore tojust four goals in a scrappy low-scoring affair at McPherson Park.

The Blues won by 37 points toremain undefeated after four games.

At Riddells Creek Reserve, theBombers came away with a massive145-point win over Woodend-Hesket. The Hawks kicked just twogoals for the game, in the first andlast quarters, as Riddell romped toan easy win. Brian Ruffell and Jar-rod Silvester both kicked five goals.

Pretty awesome for the RoosBY DANIEL PAPROTH

RYAN Pretty kicked nine goals as Sunbury Kanga-roos coasted to a 53-point win over Rockbank in theinaugural Riddell District Football League AnzacDay clash.

A gallant Rockbank was powerless to stop themight of Pretty, who largely did as he pleased upforward and was the clear difference between thetwo sides. He has 13 goals from three games afterleading the league with 47 goals in the under-18.5competition last season.

Elsewhere, the game was closer than the score-board would suggest. The Rams looked very good inpatches, with the likes of NT Thunder recruit ShaunWilson and Russell Rich doing enough to trouble theKangaroos.

But it was their poor start that did them in. Des-pite several forward-50 thrusts, Rockbank couldmanage only a solitary point as Sunbury calmlyslotted four to take a 26-point lead at quarter-time.

The Rams matched Sunbury’s efforts in the secondand third terms but were never able to stop theKangaroos from scoring. But for some inaccuratekicking — 5.8 in the third quarter alone — the mar-gin would have been far greater.

With full-back of the year Daniel Gregory holdingthe fort in defence, Sunbury extended the lead in thefinal term as the Rams’ intensity dropped off.

Sunbury coach Chris Meacham was annoyed withhis side’s ball use and inaccuracy in front of goal.

‘‘It was a solid win. We’ve won by nine goals in theend but we’ve kicked 18 points and bad kicking isbad football,’’ he said.

‘‘Not to take away from Rockbank, but the nine-goal win should have easily been a 15-goal win.

‘‘We murdered the ball a hell of a lot today. From acoaching point of view that was disappointing, butwe still had a good day and it’s not often you get toplay on Anzac Day.’’

Rockbank coach Leigh Sporle said he was disap-pointed but not defeated by the loss. ‘‘It wasn’t thebest day out, but I think the boys tried hard and Iwas proud of some of the footy they played.

‘‘The hard thing was that the game was probably abit closer than the scoreboard showed. The boysplayed pretty well in patches, I was pretty happywith some of the things I saw today.’’

Both Sunbury and Rockbank have an extendednine-day break before their matches againstWoodend-Hesket and Diggers Rest on Saturday.

Cannons repel Rebelswith third-quarter volleyBY TEO PELLIZZERI

CALDER Cannons produced onewithering burst to see off North Bal-larat Rebels’ challenge and win by 54points in TAC Cup action at HighgateReserve on Saturday.

A spell of four goals in sevenminutes of the third term set up theCannons’ win, 12.11 (83) to 3.11 (29).

The Rebels were goalless to half-time but still in the contest until themid-stages of the third quarter, withCalder injuries piling up on the bench. But it was just moments after CharlesVan Der Byl had joined Liam Berryand Lachlan Ronaldson on the Can-nons bench — all with game-endinginjuries — that the match-winningspurt started.

Paul Ahern, Josh Cauchi and RickySchraven kicked goals as Calderturned a 28-point lead at the13-minute mark of the third quarterinto 52 by time-on.

The Rebels for all their effort wouldend the third term still goalless, indanger of being embarrassed by aHighgate Reserve wind that hadskewed a number of their attempts forgoal. The Cannons led by as many as64 points before the Rebels foundtheir way to goal in the final quarter.

Cauchi led the scoring with threegoals, showing a devastating turn ofpace for his second and excellent judg-ment of a wild bounce in the wind forhis third.

Behind the ball, Jake Lever wascommanding in the air and joined by

James Ferry and Nathan Blair inshowing courage and ability to readthe play when the Rebels went longwith the wind. Anthony Prestia had aneye-catching third term with his inter-cept marking and rebound off half-back, running through the wing.

Matthew Merlo and Jake Owenwere prolific ball winners, withMerlo’s one goal for the day — directfrom a forward-line stoppage —summing up his effectiveness atwinning and using the ball in traffic.

Strength and conditioning directorSteve Forcone reminded the playersabout the importance of recovery andpreparing for the Cannons’ next inter-state game. Calder plays QueenslandScorpions at Yeronga Oval in Brisbanethis Saturday.

Calder coach gets off the markBY TEO PELLIZZERI

CALDER Cannons coach AndrewJago at last has a win to his name.

The players waited for minutes, then insisted the coach stand in thecentre of the circle during the clubsong after Saturday’s 54-point winagainst North Ballarat Rebels.

Calder improved to two wins andthree losses, but Jago did not coach theteam’s first win of the season due tomedical reasons.

But in a competition where winsand losses are not what a coach livesand dies by, getting off the mark wasbarely mentioned beyond the sports

drink shower. ‘The difference was westarted working, running hard andproviding defensive coverage for eachother,’’ Jago said.

‘‘For us to be a good side we can’tpick and choose when we want to be agood side. I didn’t think we workedhard enough in the first quarter. Wewere down in intensity.

‘‘In the players’ defence we respon-ded when North Ballarat had the windin the second quarter and outscoredthem. They changed their approach tothe game.

‘‘We lowered our eyes, hit the ballup to targets rather than blazing awayand letting the wind do it. And that led

to deeper entries into the forward50m.’’

The conditions favoured smallforward threats on a day where thewind was fluky, kicking both towards, and against, the scoring end.

‘‘Our major backs Ferry and Leverwere very good in the air. We put Leverforward a couple of times trying to getthat aerial supremacy ahead of theball.’’
