The chocolate brown, metre deep topsoil that surrounds our old volcanoes grows some of the best potatoes on the planet and lambs so plump they almost roll around the paddocks. The historic villages in the region are home to some of the best restaurants in the State from fine dining establishments to family friendly cafes and wineries.

This superbly fertile farmland gives way to the granite country of the ranges, where massive boulders are strewn like giants’ marbles. This hard but beautiful country makes the grapevines concentrate their aroma into fewer intensely flavoured grapes, hence our award winning cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and

sparkling Blanc de Noir. We don’t have big businesses dominating our wine industry, just families making wine in old woolsheds, 18th century bluestone buildings and brand spanking new architect designed cellar doors.

With such great produce it is no wonder that some of the nation’s best artisan bakers, cheesemakers, charcutiers and even boutique vegetable growers have planted roots and opened their doors across Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region. There are more than 140 natural mineral springs in Central Victoria, and most of these are located in the area surrounding Kyneton, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, making this the largest concentration of natural mineral springs in Australia. From the rolling hills of Yandoit, to the mountainous areas of Macedon Ranges, this is a land shaped by a volcanic history that has given us Hanging Rock, Mt Franklin, Lerderderg Gorge, volcanic plains and flowing mineral springs that run deep.

Explore the region and challenge yourself in the great outdoors, whether it’s walking, hiking, fishing, golfing, horse riding, mountain biking or just sitting and enjoying the surrounds of one of our lush forests or pristine lakes or glorious gardens.

FISHING Known for boasting the largest concentration of natural springs in Australia, this tranquil region is also a sanctuary for anglers seeking a place with plenty of fish and beautiful natural surrounds.

The Lederderg River located just an hour’s drive from Melbourne is carved into a gorge through sandstone and slate. Enclosed by rugged landscapes, lush vegetation and thriving wildlife;

the river itself is flowing with trout and blackfish. Due to the rough surroundings, access to the water is limited. The best points of entrance to the river are McKenzie’s Flat, Blackwood and O’Brien’s Crossing.

Werribee River and Werribee Gorge State Park, only half an hour’s drive from Melbourne’s city centre, are lined with towering gum trees and hidden pathways not to mention a plethora of fish including trout, black fish and red fin.

Other nearby fishing sites include Newlyn Reservoir near Creswick, the Hepburn Lagoon near Hepburn Springs and the Malmsbury, Lauriston and Upper Coliban Reservoirs where the waters are deep and clear and are great for redfin and trout.

Everyone needs a fishing license unless you are under 18, over 70 or you have a seniors card or other pension/disability cards. Recreational Fishing Licences can be purchased online through agriculture.vic.gov.au or purchased at local Visitor Information Centres.

MACEDON REGIONAL PARK Over 400 species of native plants have been recorded in the Macedon Regional Park and more than 200 species of birds and a wide variety of mammals can be found here including koalas, kangaroos, swamp wallabies, wombats, possums and gliders. A haven for local fauna, take the challenging climb to the peak. It is worth the effort for the breath-taking views. On the way look for the endangered Blue Ant butterfly and Golden Sun moth, majestic wedge tail eagles and smaller birds such as fairy martins and spotted pardalotes. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a strenuous hike, this region provides many options. Trek through the region’s spectacular surrounds, from the magnificent Trentham Falls to Mount Franklin’s awesome volcanic crater to the iconic Hanging Rock. GOLDFIELDS TRACK The Goldfields Track is a point-to-point 210km track stretching from Ballarat in the south to Bendigo in the north, through some of the region’s most historic towns and beautiful forests, including Creswick, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. The track was constructed by gold settlers over 150 years ago and today is well known amongst cyclers and walkers. The Wallaby Track section will take you from Mt Buninyong through to Daylesford. This 90km track is for fit and confident riders and can be done in one day. Or for a more leisurely approach, the track has been broken into four sections: Mt Buninyong to Ballarat (20km), Ballarat to Creswick (25km), Creswick to Wombat Station (29km), Wombat Station to Daylesford (19km).

THE WOMBAT TRACK The now famous Wombat Loop is 18km of well signposted, well maintained, flowing cycling goodness. Nothing too difficult, constantly undulating, no big hills.

MACEDON REGIONAL PARK The fire tracks on the side of Mt Macedon range from flat trails that are gentle enough to allow you to teach little kids to

ride bikes (say in the Macedon Scout Camp area) to rocky, white-knuckle descents (such as Barber’s Chute Track). These tracks are well drained and are a good option when it’s wet.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRAIL Romsey to Lancefield and return

A leisurely 1 hour ride, this trail mostly travels along a dedicated shared path for cyclists and pedestrians. Enjoy expanses of rolling farmland, classic Australian architecture and treat yourself at one of Lancefield or Romsey’s cafes or restaurants. Start and finish at the Lions Park Reserve, Romsey.

ROAD RIDE Three Town Scenic Route

(Woodend, Trentham, Kyneton) This ride is a great opportunity to explore a large part of the region in a single loop that joins Woodend, Trentham and Kyneton. Great from either direction, this ride gives you open farmland, tree lined country lanes and undulating leafy roads. Suggested start and finish Woodend Train Station.

Kyneton Botanic Gardens (est 1858). Plant collections include Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker) and Quercus (Oak).

Gisborne Botanic Gardens (est 1992). Features many New Zealand plant types with Hebe and Pittosporum to name a few.

Malmsbury Botanic Gardens (est 1850). The focal point of the gardens is the Ornamental Lake with the formed island at its centre.

Behind the walls of the impressive Mount Macedon mansions hide some of Victoria’s finest gardens, many National Trust-listed. What do you think is the best kept secret about your backyard?

Some say the best kept secret is that I would have beaten Black Caviar if I had of kept racing. Now I’m not one to boast, but would this face lie?

We’re so close to the airport yet you can also see kangaroos and other animals here at Living Legends, and they don’t mind the planes flying over either.

We also have some great events and markets in the area. I really love the Legendary Wine & Food Festival in October and the Sunbury Streetlife Festival in November.

What’s new in the area that you’d like other people to know about?

Even though I’m a racing legend and mainly hang out with Melbourne Cup winners, I often get to travel and say hello to people. I love to get out and see the people in the local area. Sunbury’s O’Shannassy Street is a great spot with some funky places to eat and drink. My favourites are District 3429 and The Spotted Owl but there are many more to try.

If you could paint a picture of any place in the region, what would you paint?

That’s an easy one - Living Legends with me in the picture of course! I’m very pretty! OK, some might say unique or unusual but I’m fine with that. I was very fast on the track and won lots of races but being unique and different is how I won everyone’s hearts.

What is your favourite time of year in the region and why?

Well it’s Spring of course. All horses get excited by Spring. You know what happens in Spring don’t you? The property here at Living Legends comes to life and looks a treat in Spring, so it’s a great time to come and visit us.

Mount Macedon’s greatness is visible from all parts of this region. Known as Geburrh in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, Mount Macedon was named in 1836 by Major Thomas Mitchell.

Today, Mount Macedon is home to some of the country’s most magnificent historic and private gardens. It has also been crowned by the Memorial Cross, which each ANZAC Day plays host to one of the largest and moving Dawn Services in Victoria.

Major Mitchell also gave the ethereal Hanging Rock its less well known official name, Mount Diogenes. This icon was made famous in the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock adapted from the novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay.

The nearby village of Woodend is a perfect staging post to explore this area further with its enticing mix of cafes, stores and a Visitor Information Centre that has the latest information on all things worth discovering.

Did you know that a wealth of important paleontological finds have been unearthed here from extinct megafauna including Macropus titan (a kangaroo-like animal twice the size of today’s largest relative) and Diprotodon (a rhinoceros-sized wombat lookalike)?

Outdoor pursuits are in abundance here, with a rousing round of golf at the Gisborne Golf Course under the gaze of the grazing kangaroos highly recommended.

What do you love about where you live?

I’ve lived in the beautiful surrounds of Mount Macedon for most of my life and can’t really imagine living anywhere else. It’s so close to Melbourne with all its culture, and yet far enough away to be in the quiet of the country. With its naturally cool climate it’s majestic and serene in equal measures, a real world unto itself.

What is your favourite secret location in the region?

There are lots of special places to discover in the region, but my all-time favourite secret location is Sanatorium Lake, especially on a misty winter’s day. You’ll need to make sure you’re rugged up if you visit in winter, but it’s well worth it. It is truly beautiful looking at the reflection of the manna gum trunks in the water.

What are your top five must do’s in your backyard when visitors come?

I truly feel like I hardly have to leave my backyard to show people the best of the local area. First off, a walk up Camels Hump, the highest point in the Macedon Ranges, and dogs are allowed too. Then a visit to one of Mt Macedon’s historic gardens, followed by a cup of coffee at the Trading Post. I make sure we fit in a meal at local café Mr Macedon, and then to work it all off, it’s a walk up and over nearby Mt. Towrong.

What couldn’t you live without in the region?

As someone obsessed with horticulture, it’s no surprise that I couldn’t live without the fabulous soil and climate in which I can grow a garden of wonderful rare plants.

When did you officially become a local?

When the Ryans first came to the area in 1960 we were told it took 20 years, I guess I’ve made it.

The Camels Hump is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges (1,001 metres), with a lookout offering visitors spectacular views. This is one of three local rocky outcrops formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. Generally quieter than Hanging Rock and your dog is welcome too.

Riddells Creek’s best kept secret. Conglomerate Gully is a magnificent rocky gorge, estimated to be about 440 million years old. The 2.8 kilometre walk will weave you through a hilly eucalypt forest with native grasslands and orchids in the spring time. The track is steep and rocky in parts.

Travel 4km along Cameron Drive from the summit of Mount Macedon Road. The 21m high Memorial Cross is located 200m from the carpark. This imposing, iconic structure commemorates those who bravely served in the World Wars. There are outstanding views of the surrounding country from the Reserve.

It was established in 1983 by John & Ann

Ellis, who between them came to the region

with a wealth of experience and a dream to

make Australia’s first traditional method,

cool climate sparkling wine.


John and Ann discovered that the

Macedon Ranges was perfect, it is now

known to be Australia’s coolest mainland

growing region and is just1 hour from

Melbourne. During the early 80’s they

became some of the contemporary

pioneers of both the Macedon Ranges

and the Heathcote Grape Growing

regions. They settled on a beautiful

property in the hamlet of Newham

which looked over both Hanging Rock

and Mount Macedon. At the time it was

a bare block of land but over the last

30 years they have developed it into the

largest winery in the region.

Today the winery is run by John & Ann’s

daughter and son, Ruth & Robert. Having

literally grown up in the same building

as the winery they have a deep-rooted

knowledge and passion for the winery

and the industry. Although the focus of

the winery has always been wines from

the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote,

the family also brings in some fruit from

other regions so that they can offer a

wide range of wines covering most styles

and price points.

Today there are over 20 wines on tasting,

including many that are exclusive to cellar

door and mail order customers. Recently

their focus was widened to include

Hanging Rock Beef and a Speckle Park

Stud. John has taken on breeding Speckle

Park cattle on the property, both for stud

cattle and cross breeds to supply high

quality meat in cellar door. The animals

grown for meat and sold in cellar door

are 24 months or older, grass fed and

sustainably grown.

Tallarook, another small town gem, provides a starting point to the longest rail trail in Australia–‘the Great Victorian Rail Trail’; a shared walking, cycling and horse riding track. The town is believed to date back to the Great Depression when unemployed travellers sought work. The famous phrase even became the basis of Jack O’Hagan’s song - Things Is Crook in Tallarook.

Malmsbury – an old service centre for diggers travelling to Bendigo and Castlemaine – is also worth a look. Not only is it home to Victoria’s oldest and beautiful botanical gardens, it is also the

place for a great coffee from Moto Bean Coffee Roasters, or a loaf of heavenly bread from the Malmsbury Bakery and the place to purchase unique, local art from Tin Shed Arts.

What do you love about where you live? Kyneton has been the home of Flynn Silver for decades, and there’s lots to love about this town but the standout for us is the way it welcomes new talent and takes pride in its success.

What are your five favourite food or wine spots? As residents of Kyneton who love great food and wine, we’re spoilt for choice. For us, it’s Banks Fine Wines, Granite Hills Winery and Curly Flat for beautiful wine; the whole of Piper Street with its outstanding restaurants; and of course du Fermier in Trentham run by the legendary Annie Smithers, is still setting the bar.

What is your favourite secret location in the region? (Which you may or may not want to share!) Bullarto Reservoir – it’s a great secret spot, but we’re happy to share the secret. It’s a bit like having your own private lake in the middle of the forest. Great for walks and picnics.

What are your top five must do’s in your backyard when visitors come? We love showing people around this area, particularly if they’re first time visitors. First we’ll drive them into Trentham under those soaring majestic gums, back via the Glenlyon Reserve showing how a small community shines, and then home to Kyneton to visit the Racecourse and the Botanic Gardens, ending with a stroll down Piper Street to finish the day.

If you could paint a picture of any scenery in the region, what would you paint? It’s the different landscapes and views that you see around every bend in the road, particularly the beautiful rolling hills on the Glenlyon to Daylesford road.

What is the best part of waking up in the region? It’s the clean, crisp quality of the air that we really love – there’s nothing quite like it anywhere else!

What is your favourite time of year in the region and why? Every season has something special, but it’s Spring that really brings us to life.

Kyneton Museum

This collection reflects the life and times of Kyneton and wider district from around the 1850s to the 1930s and is housed in an authentic National Trust bluestone building that was the former Bank of New South Wales built in 1856. There are changing exhibitions in the original banking chamber, and upstairs the bank manager’s residence is preserved in time. Outdoor exhibits include original bluestone stables, a servant’s kitchen, laundry and Theaden Cottage. Malmsbury Viaduct

The Malmsbury Viaduct is a feat of incredible stone engineering, built in 1859 using thousands of labourers to carry the Bendigo railway line over the Coliban River. What do you love about where you live?RedBeard has been at the heart of the village of Trentham for more than 10 years. Trentham is spud-growing country. Deep red volcanic soil, so rich you could almost eat it! Farmers here have to work through a long, cold wet winter – I know because they traipse that gloriously rich mud through the bakery.

What is your favourite secret location in the region?Trentham Falls are without a doubt the most spectacular, accessible and picturesque in Victoria, and yet not many people now about them. They’re located just 2 minutes drive from the bakery into the bush on the edge of Trentham township. Follow the signs, you won’t be disappointed!

What are you favourite food and wine spots?You must eat at Annie Smithers joint in Trentham - undeniably exquisite local seasonal food, most of it out of her own garden.

What are your top five must do’s in your backyard when visitors come?This is a great region to treat yourself to a dirty weekend away, staying at one of the many stunningly beautiful accommodation possibilities in and around Daylesford, and best of all you can wash away all your sins in one of the sumptuous spa and massage establishments. The Lake House is hard to go past for fabulous food, shelter and relaxation, but I also recommend people check out Peppers with its stunning spa and always friendly staff, and then of course there’s the famous historical Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa.

For the perfect winter escape with friends the Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville is the best. Food and accommodation are spot on, but it’s the ambience and charm of the place and the warmth and good old-fashioned congeniality of its hosts that puts the icing on this delightful cake of a place.

What is your favourite time of the year in the region?Spring and Autumn here are long and beautiful, full of colour. Summer is short and sweet, with the local kids barely in the Trentham swimming pool before it’s closed again for the year.

Daylesford is my home. I spent much of my childhood here, learning from my mother where and which wild mushrooms to gather, picking damsons in old orchards and harvesting elderflowers. For the past three decades I’ve helped our guests unearth many of the hidden food and wine gems of our region.

If they’re leaving Daylesford, and wanting some produce or a bite to eat, the decision is easy.

The Daylesford Cider Company – just out of town, offers tastings and sales of beautiful cider produced from their organic Somerset cider apple varieties.

Istra – Take a turn off just before Musk and pick up some traditionally made European smallgoods.

Passing Clouds – Just up the road is the cellar door where you can taste some of the regions’ delicious iconic wines/drops.

RedBeard Historic Bakery – Further on down the road take a right into the village of Trentham where you will find beautiful wood fired sourdough bread, be sure to take a loaf home.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel – Lean on the bar of the restored hotel, enjoy some local produce.

Trentham Collective – enjoy the rustic cool environment with a coffee or snack. From there, travel to Kyneton, Woodend and onto Melbourne.

The hamlet of Shepherds Flat, several hilly kilometres past Hepburn Springs, has been home to five generations of the Tinetti family. This small township has a unique connection with Australian cricket. Willow trees for cricket bats have been growing at Shepherds Flat for over a century. They were introduced by Test Umpire R.M. Crockett in 1902 and became the primary source for the renowned Crockett cricket bats. Mineral Springs Reserve Located at the northern end of town, these natural springs are home to the iconic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, an extensive network of bush walking tracks and BBQ facilities. Mount Franklin ReserveMount Franklin, or Lalgambook, as it is known by the Dja Dja Wurrung people, is an extinct volcano offering fine views on the approach to the summit. The sheltered crater is a superb place for a picnic or simple camping set amongst huge and pretty conifers and deciduous trees creating an exotic atmosphere. Mount Franklin is a fine example of a breached scoria cone. The breach, through which the road now enters the crater, is thought to have been caused by a flow of lava breaking through the crater rim. Lava from Mount Franklin and other volcanoes in the area filled valleys and buried the gold bearing streams renowned today as the ‘deep leads’ of the gold mining era.Mt Franklin

Trentham FallsThe Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, dramatically plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. Trentham Falls was formed five million years ago from molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley. Travelling through the exceptionally picturesque hills of Yandoit, this land steeped in Swiss-Italian heritage will suddenly become familiar if you watched the ABC program Restoration Australia. The labour of love to restore the historically significant Gervasoni Homestead (1852) has re-energised this significant landmark.

Continuing your adventure of discovery through this rich tapestry, you will eventually reach Creswick. Built on the proceeds of rich gold deposits mined from the 1850s, today this township displays fine examples of the grand architecture so reminiscent of a bygone era. Far from being ‘just’ a mining town, Creswick is the birthplace of reforestation and is the continuing home of the School of Forestry, which first opened its doors to students over 100 years ago evolving its focus from axes to ecology. It is also the birthplace of one of Australia’s most notable artistic families, the Lindsay Family, with artist Norman Lindsay perhaps the most famous of Creswick’s artistic sons.

We love the diversity of the region; Daylesford and surrounds are not your typical country towns. There is a very cosmopolitan feel but in a natural bush setting. We also love the landscape, particularly the volcanic plains that surround our farm at Smeaton. We live in an historic stone farm house that we restored, growing fruits and vegetables for our restaurant and raising rare breed sheep and cattle.

We have a few favourite places for food and wine. Annie Smithers’ du Fermier in nearby Trentham, The Farmers Arms in Daylesford, Small Holdings in Malmsbury, Le Peche Gourmand in Creswick and of course the wonderfully restored Swiss Mount Hotel in Blampied.

What is your favourite secret location in the region? (Which you may or may not want to share!)

We have a couple of secrets that we’re happy to share. On Friday evenings Neil Newitt hosts a wine bar at his photography shop in Clunes, a great way to end the week! Mt Beckworth Wines cellar door in Clunes is another great secret spot, they offer drinks and nibbles from 5pm on Sunday.

Anderson’s Mill

Anderson’s Mill is an important part of Victoria’s Goldfield’s heritage. Located in a truly-postcard setting on the banks of Birch’s Creek at Smeaton, Anderson’s Mill stands as a reminder of an industry that flourished after the gold rush of the 1850s. Standing much like it was over 100 years ago, the five-storey bluestone building and its magnificently-crafted iron water wheel are still in place.

The Loddon was named by Major Mitchell after a river near his birthplace in Hampshire, England. It is home to a variety of native fish species such as River Blackfish, Murray cod, Silver Perch and Golden Perch and a very popular fishing camping, walking, hiking, rock climbing, water sports and relaxation spot. The Loddon River formed the lively homelands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people.

Newlyn Reservoir

Located about 11 km from Creswick on the road to Daylesford; follow the signs just past the Newlyn Hotel on the right. Regarded as the number one fishing location in the area, reports of fish taken from Newlyn Reservoir are often found in local and Melbourne papers. There are Redfin of all sizes, Brown and Rainbow Trout up to about 3kg in size. There are great BBQ facilities (take your own wood) and a playground for children. Newlyn Reservoir is a fabulous spot for the entire family to enjoy.

Visitors are instinctively drawn to the scenic parks and cool, relatively undisturbed forests of this part of the region. The Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park are some of the most ideal natural locations for spotting Australia’s much-loved furry creatures – fluffy – eared koalas, velvety kangaroos and chubby wombats.

Bacchus Marsh to Blackwood proudly owns a rich history worth exploring. Originally inhabited by the Kutung, the Wathaurong, the Wurundjeri, the Jaara

and the Ngurelban Indigenous tribes, this connection can still be seen through place names such as Myrniong, which was named with the murrnong plant in mind, the Aboriginal word for ‘yam daisy’– a popular food source.

Today you can go for a drive and uncover all the new features of this place, such as quaint roadside stalls selling seasonal local produce from berries in summer to potatoes in winter. Or you can eat your way around the newest cafes, restaurants and check out the provedores focussing on the rich pickings from local producers.

Even Hollywood recognised the beauty of this part of the world, with Greendale’s

scenic rolling hills and lush country landscapes featuring in Paramount Pictures’ $100 million remake of the children’s 1952 classic tale, Charlotte’s Web.

As you enter Bacchus Marsh, it’s hard not to miss the famous Avenue of Honour, a truly grand road lined by hundreds of elm, oaks and plane trees, planted to honour those who served during World War One.

We love living in the village of Gordon. It’s so well situated, whether you’re coming from Ballarat, Daylesford, Ballan or Melbourne, and has a beautiful historic streetscape with some quite quirky attractions. We particularly love the country atmosphere and the local community which is so supportive.

What is the best part of waking up in the region?

This is a really beautiful place to call home. We’re surrounded by farming land so we feel like we’re a world away from the city. In the cooler months we have to remember to keep warm when we go for crisp walks with our beautiful Golden Retriever Cloe, and then we have the joy of coming back to a roaring wood fire.

What do you think is the best kept secret about your backyard/area?

The best kept secret in Gordon is that it is a small and compact village but with so much to do. People love to visit our two shoppes where we sell unique and intriguing hats, capes and berets. There’s also the charming Billy Boils Café which features a musical flavour, with local musicians regularly dropping by to perform. It also serves up fine food and Devonshire tea. Or for lovers of arts, antiques and collectables there’s The Shambles, a treasure trove worth exploring.

When did you officially become a local?

Not sure we are yet! We’ve both been living in Gordon for 10 years and really feel like we’re now part of the community. We renovated the Hat Shoppe, which was originally the Gordon Anglican Church. We also renovated The Shambles which is next door. We love living in this country area and would never move back to city life where we came from. Bob and I have taken great pride in creating our shoppes, and we know they are quite unique.


It’s impossible to choose a favourite time of the year as we love them all. What we do love is that every season is different. We only have to look out the window to know what time of the year we’re in!

Blackwood – historic goldmining villageIn 1855, the goldmining village of Blackwood had 13,000 prospectors on the hunt for instant wealth. Today, those golden days are gone but this historic village remains, situated amidst the tall timbers and lush greenery of the Wombat State Forest. Discover a whole new world of riches by paying this quaint town a visit.

The Garden of St Erth is a must-stop destination for visitors to Blackwood. Enjoy its expansive gardens, historic sandstone homestead, abundant orchards, rare perennials, Diggers Garden Shop, nursery and café.

The Blackwood Hotel was built in 1868, and is the oldest weatherboard pub with a continuous licence. Worth a visit to soak up the atmosphere or choose a meal from the enticing menu sourced from local produce.

Lerderderg RiverThis river is known for the Lerderderg Gorge Picnic Ground, camping, bushwalking and fishing activities. In earlier days, gold was mined in the upper reaches, and some of the old mines (considered dangerous to enter) can be seen as you travel along the sluice on the east bank, which previously fed into those mines.

Soda Mineral WaterWhen gold was discovered in Blackwood, it was a dark, wet forest with rainfall exceeding one metre yearly. Chinese miners panning in the Lerderderg River found springs on either side; one is now known as Soda Spring. In 1887, a government analyst described the springs as an equal of Apollinaris, a German mineral water selling for two shillings and sixpence a bottle. Today you can sample and bottle the spring water for free! How awesome?
