Tigers lose race to field seniorsBY TARA MURRAY

Off-limits: Kyneton spearhead Nathan Thompson, reaching for a mark, is disappointedthat the club won’t field a senior side. Picture: courtesy of Bendigo Advertiser

KYNETON will not field a seniorteam in the Bendigo Football NetballLeague this season following its failureto sign enough senior players.

The league made the decision onFriday morning after meeting KynetonFootball Netball Club officials the pre-vious night.

Tigers president Cello Matricadisaid it was a tough decision and some-thing the club didn’t enjoy.

‘‘We presented the facts to the boardand we cannot field a competitivesenior team, but as for [other teams], ithasn’t been decided.’’

He said the club had about only halfthe number of players it needed to fielda team.

‘‘Ideally you would like 25 or moreplayers to make your club stronger.Even if we had about 16 to 18 wecould have still had a chance to keepgoing.’’

League chief executive StevenOliver said it was a tough decision tomake. ‘‘The club has done everythingin its power to get the numbers, butthey have fallen short and this is theconsequence.’’

He said the league hoped the Tigerswould be able to field a senior sidenext year and beyond. ‘‘They have tostart rebuilding for 2014 and attractthe players and local support.

‘‘Kyneton needs a footy club, notjust for the footballers and thenetballers, but for the communityitself.’’

Mr Oliver said a decision on thefuture of the club’s reserves, under-18and netball teams would be made inthe next few days.

Mr Matricadi said the club wasalready looking to having a seniorteam next year. ‘‘We’ll be making surewe run the club properly this year and

have enough players for the otherteams.

‘‘We don’t think we’ll lose any moreplayers, and if we do, it’ll be becausethey want to play senior football.

‘‘The more players, members, sup-porters and sponsors who stick withus and help us through developing thejuniors and netballers this year, themore successful 2014 will be.’’

Former AFL player Nathan Thomp-son, who was playing coach of the

Tigers last season, was extremely dis-appointed the club couldn’t get thenumbers.

Thompson, who travelled fromDoncaster to play, had been weighingup his playing future. ‘‘It’s sad for thetown and the league. A lot of peopletried to turn it around and it didn’twork out the way we wanted. It wasn’tthrough a lack of trying by those at theclub. We couldn’t get momentum toget a team for this season.’’

Macedon Ranges mayor RogerJukes said it was disappointing for thetown and district.

‘‘Hopefully they take it on boardand look at getting the club runningagain. From a council perspective, there will be some effect socially andfinancially and the league is aware ofthat.

‘‘Losing a football team such asKyneton financially means looking atlosing $100,000 out of the local econ-omy.’’

He said the council would look atdoing what it could to help get a seniorteam back on the park next year.

HIGHS AND LOWS

THE history of the KynetonFootball Club dates back to 1858.An exact date of its first matchisn’t known, with some reportssaying it was in 1858. But anorganised match took place in theearly 1860s.The first formal competition in

Kyneton was established in 1868,and later proved successful, growing to two competitions, onWednesday nights and Saturday. In 1932, the current Kyneton

Football Netball Club was formedwhen Kyneton CYMS and theCollegians, also based inKyneton, merged and joined theBendigo Football League. After the 1941 season the club

and didn’t play football until 1945.It played in the Castlemaine

District Football League in 1945and the Castlemaine FootballLeague the following year, beforerejoining the BFL in 1947.After winning the 1936 BFL

grand final, the Tigers won flagsin 1960, 1961, 1966, 1995 and1997. They were runners-up in1957, 1959, 1963, 1976 and 1996.But recently, their fortunes went

downhill and they made the finalsjust once since 2000.

Friends president Alan Stone said the Music andMirth fund-raiser would feature noted performersMaggie Millar, Marcie Jones, Lorraine Davey andAnnie Phelan.

“It’s a show of good faith from the people.‘‘We need $20,000, which would show that the

people want their theatre back. We certainly want

it back. It’s a fantastic theatre and we need it backwith a growing community.”

Stories of grandpa’slife just bittersweet

‘‘In the end mygrandfather and otherelder Chinese men feltlike they were still seenas ‘aliens and illegals’.’’

— Dorothy Thorne

SUNBURY resident Dorothy ‘Possy’Thorne’s decision to look up herfamily history has led to her involve-ment in a bigger project.

‘‘I was fiddling with the computerone night and I was looking forinformation about my grandfatherand I asked if anyone could help,’’Ms Thorne (pictured), a ChineseAustralian, says.

‘‘Melbourne Chinese Museumcurator Dr Sophie Couchman got intouch with me and invited us [withher daughter Deb] to come and meetother Chinese Australians looking attheir family history.’’

From there, Ms Thorne hasbecome one of 10 people who recor-ded interviews with the museum aspart of its Saving Australia’s EarlyChinese Memories project.

The project involves the parti-cipants discussing their memories oflife in Australia during the WhiteAustralia years.

‘‘It was terrible when my grand-father, Jimmy Houey Hay, moved to

Benalla. My mum was seven at thetime and the eldest of six children.

‘‘They were the only Chinese fam-ily in the area and went through hell.

‘‘It hit my mum more than the oth-ers and she was very bitter about it.’’

Her grandfather later moved to

Carlton. ‘‘In the end my grandfatherand other elder Chinese men felt likethey were still seen as ‘aliens andillegals’.’’ Ms Thorne said sheremembered growing up withChinese influences. ‘‘I can remembergrowing up and living with all therelatives except my grandfather —he never lived with us. We would go

visit him every night to have dinner.’’She said keeping the memory alive

of people like her grandfather wasimportant. ‘‘I’ve found out as muchas I can about him, so I’ll have to

start helping other people. It’sincredible what you find out.’’

The interviews will be part offuture exhibitions.

Moon’s glow a headache for firefightersBY ANGELA VALENTE

FALSE fire alarms reported across central Vic-toria are taking volunteer firefighters away fromgenuine emergencies and fire risks.

Not only that, CFA district 2 operations man-ager Mark Gilmore says that false callouts aretaking volunteer firefighters away from theirdaytime jobs and homes.

Last Monday evening, Woodend Fire Brigadewas told that a tree was on fire but it turned outto be a false alarm when firefighters arrived.

First Lieutenant Mike Dornau said the person

who called triple-0 had mistaken the full moonglowing behind the trees to be a fire.

About 70 per cent of calls reporting fires occurduring the day and many of the volunteers havedaytime jobs.

Mr Gilmore said false and hoax calls were agenuine problem for the CFA.

“Somewhere like 50 per cent of calls to triple-0are not emergencies.

“It causes us to activate fire brigades whenthey don’t need to be.

“From a volunteer point of view, people haveto leave work, go and get the truck and head off

to the scene. It takes people away from theirwork and homes to respond.”

Because of false alarm calls, emergency crewscould be delayed in responding to fires that posereal danger.

“Our people travel to fire reports under emer-gency conditions, that is with lights and sirenson, and they are travelling as quickly as they safe-ly can. That is a risky activity.

“For false alarms, we are doing that when wedon’t need to do it and we would rather that notoccur.”

Mr Gilmore said that with a number of bush-

fires across the state there were times whensmoke could drift across to the region and looklike fog.

He asked residents not to be alarmed and tocheck if there were flames before alerting author-ities. For information on bushfires, call1800 240 667 or go to cfa.vic.gov.au■A 55-year-old man who fell through the roofand got trapped at the bottom of a concretewater tank in Gisborne South last Thursday isrecovering in Royal Melbourne Hospital. He wasdoing maintenance work on the tank. CFA, MFBand SES workers rescued the man.

GISBORNE Secondary College madehistory yesterday as it handed 2000paper cranes to Senator Jan McLucas, the parliamentary secretary to PrimeMinister Julia Gillard.

It’s the only school in Australia tak-ing part in the International Campaignto Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)which seeks support for a treaty ban-ning nuclear weapons.

Bundles of 1000 cranes will bedelivered to the president and primeminister of every UN member state, urging governments to negotiate on aglobal ban on nuclear weapons.

Senator McLucas travelled toGisborne from Queensland to acceptthe cranes on Ms Gillard’s behalf.

A bundle of 1000 cranes was foldedby students from the Japanese city ofHiroshima, destroyed by a nuclearbomb in World War II.

The other 1000 were folded byGisborne students who visitedHiroshima in October as part of atwo-week trip for Japanese studies.

More than 140,000 paper craneshave been delivered to leaders world-wide.

Gisborne Secondary College Japan-ese teacher Noriko Ikaga said ICANcalled on Ms Gillard to join othernations to join negotiations this yearon a treaty to eliminate nuclearweapons.

Thirteen students from years 10 and11 were involved in folding the cranes.

“We thought it would be a goodproject for the students to join in.We’re the only school that is involvedin this project in Australia and I’mvery proud of the students,” she said.

“They chose to do this on theirown.”

In a letter accompanying 1000cranes, students from Hiroshimastated: “As youth from Hiroshima, weare deeply concerned that our future isstill being threatened by close to20,000 nuclear weapons . . . we fearthat unless governments and individu-als do more to rid the world of these

horrible weapons, another city mightone day suffer the same fate asour own.’’

President of the Medical Associ-ation for Prevention of War JennyGrounds, who is also a member of

ICAN, was also at the handover yes-terday at the school.

Spanners in the works

BY ANGELA VALENTE

DISCARDED and unwanted objects havebeen given a new lease of life as part of a‘sustainable’ art exhibition titled Revive.

The exhibition, which displays theworks of Macedon Ranges and younginterstate artists, shows how art can shapea sustainable future.

Bakery Lane Gallery owner DawnRobinson, who has several pieces in theexhibition, says: “I’ve done recycled art-work. I have made things out of all typesof building materials, very old materials aswell, some from the early 1900s.

“There’s old discarded electrical copperwire, old spanners and bits and pieces oftin.”

Ms Robinson admits that some peoplewill call the materials ‘junk’, but she reck-ons it’s all in the art of collecting.

“My partner and I, we don’t call it junk, but other people do. It’s almost like beingat Bunnings when you’re at my house.

‘‘We have itemised things; we have cogswith the other cogs, if there’s anything tri-angular, it will be in the triangle section.

“I will draw my inspiration from

looking at what I have. I’ll get a flash inmy head of what I want to create in thatinstance and I’ll do it.”

The exhibition will include wearable artas well as sculptural pieces, books madefrom recycled paper and materials. Itforms part of the Macedon Ranges Sus-tainable Living Festival this Saturday in

Woodend and the statewide SustainableLiving Festival, which runs from February9-24.

Revive opens this Friday until February24. A gold coin entry to the gallery will bedonated to the Woodend Ambulance.

The Bakery Lane Gallery is at 42B Ans-low Street, Woodend.

Abbott talks shop in SunburyBY TARA MURRAY

Gift for you: Tony Abbott receives a jumper from Sunbury Football Club members, and (right) with daughter Frances, speaks toSunbury residents. Pictures: Michael Copp

TAX cuts would be a boon for strug-gling small businesses in Sunbury,Opposition Leader Tony Abbott saidlast Wednesday.

He was in town to speak to morethan 300 residents at the SunburyFootball Club just hours before PrimeMinister Julia Gillard announced afederal election for September 14.

‘‘If we take off taxes like the carbontax, if we try to ensure that the work-place system is more friendly to busi-nesses that want to employ staff, andif we can get the red tape burdendown, [which is] not always easy [itwill make things easier for busi-nesses].

‘‘But we [the Coalition] can cer-tainly do a much better job than thecurrent government and offer hope tothe small businesses of places likeSunbury.’’

Mr Abbott said that if elected hewould make sure the East West Linkwas completed.

But he couldn’t say if any roads in

the McEwen electorate, whichincludes Sunbury and parts of theMacedon Ranges, and the OuterMetropolitan Ring Road wouldreceive funding. ‘‘I accept that [peoplewant the government to help], but thenational government does have toconfine itself to roads of national

significance. But if the federal govern-ment is doing a better job, the stategovernment, I think, will be able tolift its game, too.’’

Mr Abbott said he would focus onmaking sure Australia had a strongeconomy.

‘‘What I want to do for the people

of Australia, Victoria, McEwen andSunbury is try and ensure we have astrong economy in which your job issafe, your cost of living is not goingup like right now, and you can affordthe services you expect.

‘‘[I want to] take the red tape bur-den off your businesses.’’

COVERSTORY

Growing up on a farm was like one big adventure for Shannon Noll. He relished days spent riding horses and motorbikes, shooting rabbits and taking his stag hounds out to chase foxes. Long before Australian

Idol and gold discs, the boy from the bush was expected to help on the family’s wheat, cattle and sheep farm. Noll was roustabout in the shearing shed in September school holidays and had to work the fi elds, sometimes behind the wheel of a tractor, for hours on end. Typical of teenagers in the ’80s, he would pass the time listening to a mix tape, his favourite devoted entirely to Midnight Oil.

Noll is now reliving those childhood days, having recently embarked on a national tour dedicated to signifi cant songs from his youth, and having moved to some acreage on the northern outskirts of Melbourne.

It turns out the old adage is true – you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.

Noll settled with his young family in the Macedon Ranges last year, not far from Sunbury where his wife Rochelle grew up. They had been living in the outer Sydney suburb of Lilli Pilli, a convenient location while Noll established his music career, but he dearly wanted his three children to grow up surrounded by paddocks, not picket fences.

“I loved growing up in the bush and on a bit of property, so I really wanted that opportunity for my kids,” Noll says. “You get a lot of life

lessons growing up on the land, like how to fi x problems when you have limited resources. But it’s also about being outside with nature and OK with your own company.”

Children Cody, Blake and Sienna attend the local primary school. The boys have made the switch from rugby league to Australian rules at the junior footy club and Sienna has inherited Rochelle’s love of horse riding. There are sheep, chickens and dogs on the four-hectare property, a modest holding compared with the 1822 hectares Noll roamed as a child, but it’s enough for now.

“It’d be good if it was a bit bigger so we could have more stock, but I think that’d be too much to handle, being away so much,” Noll says. “I’ve got enough on my plate as it is.”

Noll juggles farming duties with his thriving music career. Committing to back-to-back national tours, late last year he fi nished the tour to promote his fourth studio album, A Million Suns, and is now touring the country with his In My Youth tour.

“It’ll be like going back to when we just played music for the sheer fun of it,” Noll says, referring to the time he and his two older brothers, Adam and Damian, formed a three-piece outfi t, Cypress. The trio rehearsed in the shearing shed and performed at local pubs.

Some of the legendary bands whose songs are being covered on the tour include Midnight Oil, INXS, Men at Work, Australian Crawl and Cold Chisel. Noll says they helped cement Australian music on the world map.

“It was probably the best era of Australian music we’ve ever had,” he says. “Their songs are regularly on the radio, so even young people know the majority of the songs we’ll be playing. If you can get a broad listenership, that’s a testament to the quality of the songs as well.”

The In My Youth tour is making numerous stops in regional centres around the country. “Regional people and country people are loyal and if you get them on board they’ll stick with you; they won’t just move on to the next trendy thing,” he says.

“I go out of my way to make sure I can get to as many of those places as I can, instead of doing one big show in the city and expecting everyone to come in, y’know?”

Having grown up near the central NSW town of Condobolin, Noll has always been a strong advocate for rural and semi-rural Australians. “The place can’t run on the power of one city and state,” he says. “A lot of the strength in the economy comes from smaller regions and I think we’ve got to remember that.”

The communities of such places have been big supporters since Noll’s career famously kicked off in 2003 as runner-up (to Guy Sebastian) on the fi rst series of Australian Idol.

His fi rst single, What About Me, debuted at number one on the Australian charts, as did the album it appeared on, That’s What I’m Talking About.

Noll achieved similar success with his second album, Lift, and its debut single, Shine, which became a sporting anthem and was performed

at the 2006 Australian Open tennis fi nal. And shine Noll did, becoming the fi rst Australian

artist to score 10 consecutive top-10 singles on the ARIA charts and selling more than 1.3 million albums. Along the way, he turned his hand to songwriting and won multiple ARIA and MTV Australia awards.

Career highlights such as these are charted in Noll’s biography So Far, released late last year. It also details tough times, including the death of Noll’s father in a farming accident in 2001 and the drought that forced his family to sell their beloved farm six years later.

The book was ghostwritten by a Sydney journalist who interviewed Noll for fi ve hours a day, six days straight – an experience Noll describes as therapeutic. “It brought up a lot of stuff that I’d suppressed for a long time and going over it brought back a lot of the emotion that went with it,” he says.

“There’s a lot of joy and a lot of heartache as well. I think it’s good to relive that sort of stuff and then put it behind you.”

Despite his transition from farmer working on the land to singer touring the country, Noll says he never wakes up and pinches himself at his apparent good fortune. “It’s a job too, y’know,” he says. “There’s a lot of hard work and there are ups and downs.”

Still hel embraces the responsibility that comes with his public persona. “It’s amazing hearing feedback from people about what your music means to them,” he says. “That’s probably the biggest joy out of the whole thing. You can save a sheep from fl ystrike, but it’s not going to turn around and thank you for it.”

Shannon Noll’s In My Youth tour runs until February 24, 2013.

Thanks, JeanWe write to publicly thank a member of ourcommunity, Jean Philipps of Bullengarook, who died on January 24, aged 80.

We met Jean many years ago while work-ing with people to stop the woodchippingat the Wombat State Forest and Jean wasthere. During the attempt to stop the suburb-anisation of the Macedon Ranges, Jean wasthere.

In the fight to have statement of planningpolicy No. 8 restored to protect the MacedonRanges from overdevelopment throughoutthe reign of the Labor and now Liberal stategovernments, Jean was there.

Jean loved and fought to preserve a life-style she wanted to pass on to future genera-

tions. Her no-nonsense commonsense views, expressed in many letters to newspapers overthe years, endeared her to many and frus-trated ministers of government.

As the silver light of the evening stars shineupon the Macedon Ranges, we take comfortknowing Jean is there and we pledge to con-tinue the fight. Thank you, Jean.

Louise and Brian Whitefield,

friends of Jean Philipps, Gisborne.

It took a while to be adopted in Australia with many rejecting it as “just another money-spinning American tradition”, but now it’s here to stay.

For many, consciousness of the day begins in early primary school when kids swap lollies with printed “love” messages. It’s usually the fi rst time boys and girls become aware of their popularity (or otherwise), setting up a pseudo gauge that can continue into adolescence and beyond.

But whatever your personal stance on the merits of Valentine’s Day, it certainly brings out the romantic in people, with many famous people providing a smorgasbord of quotes to put you in the Valentine’s Day mood. Check these out:

Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. - Aristotle

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. - Lao Tzu

Age does not protect you from love. But love, to some extent, protects you from age. - Anais Nin

Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward in the same direction. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Love does not dominate; it cultivates. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place. - Zora Neale Hurston

Feeling the love now? Hold onto that and it will help set you up for a rosy 2013 Valentine’s Day, whether you splurge on a loved one or just commit to spending top-notch face time.

Cupid’s bow is poised………..

Love makes your soul crawl out......

SWIMMER’S SHOULDER

G5696572AA-a5Feb©FCNVIC

Shoulder pain is a very common complaint among swimmers. The term “swimmer’s shoulder” is a general term encompassinga spectrum of shoulder dysfunction. The pain associated with swimmer’s shoulder is usually due the pinching of the rotator cuff tendons (tendons around the shoulder) or the bursa (fl uid fi lled sac) underneath the arch of the shoulder. The four rotator cuff muscles are the dynamic stabilizers of the shoulder joint. They act to control the movement of the shoulder joint. When these muscles start to function abnormally, they allow the humerus (long arm bone) to rise up and pinch structures within the shoulder joint. Any imbalance of these muscles can contribute to the development of swimmer’s shoulder. Other factors are:• Poor posture • Muscle tightness • Increased mobility of the shoulder joint• Stiffness of the neck or back• Long duration training sessions• Excessive paddle work• Breathing on one side only• Poor swimming techniquesContinued pinching of the tendons underneath the shoulder arch results in swelling and pain and will eventually result in damage to the tendons and cause them to degenerate.Management by a physiotherapist includes:• Stretching of muscles contributing to the imbalance• Massage • Re-education of the weaker muscles• Strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff muscles and/ or the specifi c muscles causing the imbalance • A graduated and progressive rehabilitation program• And, very importantly, technique correction. “Swimmer’s shoulder” can be a real problem to the keen swimmer and merely reducing the amount of laps or “resting” is not the answer. Physiotherapists can assist with all the above management strategies and the problem should be addressed before it gets worse.

Be your best

By Rebecca Miller

Sun sense or cents? The need to slip-slop-slap-seek-slide when the

sun’s out isn’t new, but what you use (50+ sunscreen) is.The slightly higher protection cream became available in Australia in November, despite being attainable earlier in the US, New Zealand and Europe. The Cancer Council of Victoria says the improved product provides 98 per cent protection from the sun’s rays, up from 96.7 per cent when using SPF (sunscreen protection factor) 30+ sunscreen. The small increase in protection begs the question: is it really worth paying the extra dollars? Some argue any increase in protection is better than none, particularly in people with fair skin, such as myself. However, others say that wearing any kind of sunscreen, whether it be 15+ or 30+, is still worthwhile. The Therapeutic Goods Administration says SPF 50+ sunscreen allows much less UVA radiation — which is largely responsible for melanoma

and skin cancer — to pass through a layer of sunscreen.By ‘much less’ they mean one in every 50 rays of sunlight instead of one in every 30. But even with the increased protection, sun-lovers still need to reapply their sunscreen every two hours. In saying this, if the sunscreen in the cupboard at home is almost empty or expired it could be a good opportunity to try the 50+ variety. When buying your next sunscreen consider one that’s chemical-free, especially for people with eczema, dermatitis or just sensitive skin.Choice — the people’s watchdog — advises trying:• Cancer Council Classic Sunscreen.• Nivea Sun Moisturising Sunscreen Lotion.• Hamilton Everyday Face Sunscreen.• Banana Boat Sensitive Sunscreen. As a beach lover, I can only hope the SPF in sunscreens continue to improve and that they become less thick and greasy; maybe then, people will reapply more often.

The best way to prepare for this fi re season is to stay informed

and plan to leave early, before you see smoke or fi re.

Plan to leave early:

üTalk to everyone you live with so you all know when you’re

going to leave and where you’re going to go if a fi re starts.

üPack a relocation kit with important documents and

essential items.

üOn high-risk days, check Fire Danger Ratings and fi re

Don’t wait and hope for the best. Visit the CFA website to fi nd

The first thing you have to think about when settling on a price is the deposit. On exchange of a contract,

you will have to pay the specified deposit. Typically, it will be ten per cent. But this may be negotiable. One

rule of thumb is not to give the deposit directly to the seller. Instead, it should go into a trust account of the

seller’s agent, or sometimes of the seller’s solicitor. Your own solicitor or conveyancer will handle the funds

on your behalf and will make sure it is properly deposited. Some sellers may press for early release of the

deposit, but this should only be done upon getting advice from your solicitor or conveyancer. In general,

the deposit should not be considered the seller’s monies until settlement occurs. One exception might be

early occupancy of the premises, but this is a risky proposition for the vendor. Private treaties are generally

subject to a cooling off period as well. This varies from state to state. During this time, the buyer may

cancel the contract. There is a small fee for doing so. If you wish to rescind the contract after the cooling off

period has expired, it is generally the case that you will then forfeit the entire deposit monies. So it is a good

precautionary measure to first line up your finance before you initiate an exchange of contracts. If I can be

of service in any real estate matter, feel free to phone me, John Dunlop, on 9744 2555 or to call into our

friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for immediate attention.

Edwardian eleganceClever renovations produced a light-filled, inviting family haven, writes Carole Levy

1 Governors Drive, Mount MacedonBedrooms: 3Bathrooms: 2 plus powder roomLiving areas: Lounge, family-dining, entertainment, studyThe rest: Split-systems, wood heater, double glazing, 1.5kWsolar power, 36,000-litre capacity water tanks, wateringsystem, deck, balcony, double garage/storeroomPrice: $889,000Private saleAgent: Gisborne Real Estate, 5428 8895

It started life as an Edwardian weatherboard, but when local builder Ewald Jeske put hishand to the renovation tiller in the ’70s the

house began a metamorphosis into the stylish,light-filled, inviting family haven it is today.

The more than 2700-square-metre blockrepresents a moreish slice of life at the foot of themount, with cottage gardens at the front andgorgeous trees, swathes of grass and prettyunderplantings and shrubs (think rhodies andcamellias) out back. Liquid ambers, maples, golden elm and silver birches weave a richcanopy tapestry, while a grapevine and cherry,

lemon, apple and nashi trees add bounty.Befitting its roots, entry is into a long, wide, floorboarded hallway. To the left is a study andopposite is the carpeted main bedroom withwalk-through wardrobe and ensuite with pedes-tal basin and black-and-white chequerboardflooring. Two more bedrooms are further along, near to the main bathroom, which is similarlystyled to the smaller version — with the additionof a clawfoot bath.

The newer section begins with a lounge roomwith floorboards offset by a restful green wallcolour, elegant drapes and a wood heater beneath

an Edwardian-style mantelpiece. Next is thelarge living hub, a most appealing space courtesyof banks of picture windows revealing theverdant gardens and a timber deck with enoughdappled shade to make missing summertimerelaxation a crime.

The kitchen has oodles of cupboards, a dish-washer, electric cooktop and stainless-steel walloven — everything needed, in fact. Up top, viatimber stairs, is a big carpeted room with balconyand powder room. It would make a top-notchentertainment space, hobby zone, teenager’s bed-room or guest quarters.

FEBRUARY 5, 2013 >> SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES WEEKLY 29

Whistling as she worksShannon Colgan has bounced her way into a sports career, writes Rebecca Miller

Watching her brother play AFLfootball, along with a love ofsport generally, led Shannon

Colgan, 18, to become a field umpire.‘‘A teacher from school — who was

part of the Western Region FootballLeague — started an academy andbecause I loved footy I decided to joinand give umpiring a go,’’ Shannonsays.

‘‘I started helping at my brother’sfooty games when they were short onumpires. It gave me a sniff of what itwas like.’’

After a couple of weeks training onbasic umpiring skills, Shannonumpired her first game with a mentorto show her the ropes.

The teenager has now been umpir-ing in the WRFL since 2009, trainingon Monday and Wednesday nights,

and is one of only two field umpires inthe league.

‘‘There are more women working asgoal or boundary umpires, but it’smostly guys in the league. I love beinginvolved in the game. It’s given meskills, confidence and socialopportunities.’’

The young sportswoman got to runonto the ground at Etihad Stadiumduring this year’s NAB Cup competi-tion and went into the rooms to seehow the umpires prepare for theirgames.

‘‘I umpired at five Auskick games atthe MCG and Etihad last year.’’

This year, Shannon had the pleasureof meeting Chelsea Roffey, a goalumpire in the AFL grand final inSeptember. ‘‘It was great to meetChelsea and to see how much you can

achieve if you set your mind to it.’’Shannon umpires division one, seniors’ football games on Saturdays, and juniors on Sundays from April toSeptember. ‘‘I’m pretty sporty. I usedto play basketball and netball and doathletics.’’ She’s also a member of theYouth Girls Academy, one of 13 fieldumpires from the Melbourne metroarea, and says the academy gives herthe chance to hone her skills.

Shannon says she’ll always maketime for umpiring. ‘‘Next year I’mgoing to travel overseas, but I also planon umpiring and I’m hoping to studybusiness and sports management.’’

For other young women interestedin umpiring, she has this advice: ‘‘Takethe risk and get your foot in the door. It’s a great opportunity to get involvedwith footy.’’
