PASTOR’S MESSAGE “Come, and you will see.” John 1:38 All of the passages that describe the calling of the first apostles intrigue us with their simplicity and direct-ness. Whether it is Jesus calling fishermen to leave their nets behind to follow him or today’s Gospel from John 1:35-42 where Andrew and another of John the Baptist’s disciples followed Jesus as they heard John say of him, “Behold, the Lamb of God”, we are struck by a lack of details in these seminal first dialogues that forever changed the lives of the first followers. You would think if you were going to give up your current profession and leave all behind, including family, to follow a stranger, you would require a longer interview period or vetting process! “Come, and you will see” mark Jesus’ invitation to Andrew. Discipleship is not something learned in text-books but something that rubs off from another’s shoulders. I’m weary of those learn-a-language quick apps or DVD’s that promise you’ll be fluent in Italian in just three weeks! What malarkey! Everyone knows learning a new language takes years and is best done by immersion in the country where the new lan-guage is spoken. The same holds true in learning the language of discipleship; one learns it by living side by side with the honest, selfless and faith-filled-followers who have for years been walking down disciple-ship’s beaten path. Our Archdiocese’s need for priests is as critical as ever. The new administration’s restriction of even legal immigration, including religious worker visas, is evidenced in stays that were once granted for five years, now only to be granted for one or two years. If all of the priests who serve in our Archdiocese from foreign countries such as from India, Africa and Latin America would lose their religious worker renewals, we would see parishes without priests become an immediate reality! This helps highlight the fact that vocations that (Continue next page, please)

should be coming from our own parishes and from our local communities are nowhere near the levels needed to sustain the parishes we have, much less the new ones we hope to build. We can do our part by praying for more vocations and encouraging any of our youth considering a reli-gious vocation to attend a vocation retreat offered by our Archdiocese or local religious orders. Be-fore settling in as a diocesan priest, I visited the community of the Marist Brothers and lived with the Holy Cross Priests and Brothers for several years. My experiences with these religious made a huge impact on my life. ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is cele-brating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Anto-nio, with over 5,000 registered families, and arguably the parish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulle-tins we will be announcing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

THE LAMB OF GOD “Behold the Lamb of God!” We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there’s a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today’s Gospel reading, John pro-claims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John’s own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then fol-lowed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Ordinary Time” began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and re-built by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankin-cense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ’s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don’t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
