Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Families and Friends,

Month of the Rosary

Let us remember that this month of October is dedicated to the Rosary. Consider taking some time out of our busy lives to pray the Rosary, as a family or meditating alone. This would be an ideal opportunity to introduce the rosary to young children. Start out with using the beads. Children need to touch, count and know what the different beads mean. At the end of this time the child would have acquired a loving and respectful familiarity with the beads. Sometime along this apprenticeship you should introduce the real meaning of the rosary by telling your children the story of our salvation as expressed in the fifteen mysteries, as a simple story. John Paul II called the Rosary his favorite prayer. He offered mass in Fatima on May 13th, 1982, to give thanks for Mary’s intercession in saving his life a year earlier. He reminded the faithful that the message of Fatima is a call to conversion and repentance, the nucleus of the message of the Gospel. He re-consecrated the world to Mary’s Immaculate Heart and called all to prayer, especially the Rosary. (Continued on page 2)

Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Families and Friends, (cont’d)

Let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. Blessings, Ann Connelly

Dear Mother, I bring Thee roses Because they are so sweet,

But lilies, my favorite flowers I am placing at Thy feet.

Accept with each Hail Mary

A rose for Thy crown so bright; Please don't forget the lilies, The lilies so pure and white.

Let them be a bond of love

And understanding rare, And send a blessing from above

In answer to my prayer.

Loneliness would be unknown If more people came to Thee, With their trials and sorrows

And said their Rosary.

With each Hail Mary, they would find Their load much lighter grow, And in humility, kiss the cross In peace, would onward go.

The Gabriel Project – Second Collection October 13/14th 2018

Dear parishioners, The Gabriel Project ministry, serving the needs of pregnant women, has been in operation for almost 9 years here at St Matthew’s. Our sincere grati-tude to Msgr. Talesfore for again permitting a

second collection next weekend, October 13/14th. We serve all pregnant mothers in need through the 24-hour helpline (800-910-2848) and extend our help to non-pregnant moms as well. Our clients have many and varied needs including emotional support, baby items, financial assistance, help accessing pre-natal care etc. This year, thanks to your generosity, we have been able to provide new strollers and car seats – a basic, not a luxury, cribs, mattresses, bedding, clothing, diapers and wipes, diaper bags, and toiletries for the wellbeing of our newborn ba-bies and their families. These small acts of kindness help to ease the burden of poverty often experienced by mothers who are blessed with the gift of new life. We wish to acknowledge our neighboring parishes: St Gregory, St Catherine, and Our Lady of Angels, for their contributions of material goods to aid our efforts. It’s won-derful to collaborate and it has enabled us to share items with other parishes throughout the archdiocese where there is need. Your financial contributions help build a Culture of Life, One Mom and One Family at a time. Thank you and God bless you all, Janet Healy and The Gabriel Project Team

Me que-dé sorprendida.

Soon after the birth of my son Charlie,* who has Down syn-drome, a visitor asked whether he was “mild, moderate, or se-vere”—referring to his level of cognitive impairment. I was shocked. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy, who defied easy categorization. It’s like looking at stained glass from the outside: the colors look dark, and you can’t see the figures. But inside, with the sun shining through, the effect can be brilliant. From inside our family, love illuminates our life with Charlie. What may seem dreary to others, perhaps even unbearable, is actually filled with beauty and color. Our love has nothing to do with his abilities. We love him simply because of who he is, and understanding this teaches us a fundamental truth: every life is a good and perfect gift. *Name changed for privacy.
