EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY FRANCIS BISHOP OF ROME SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD TO ALL WHO READ THIS LETTER GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE 17. The season of Lent during this Jubilee Year should also be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy. How many pages of Sacred Scripture are appropriate for meditation during the weeks of Lent to help us rediscover the merciful face of the Father! We can repeat the words of the prophet Micah and make them our own: You, O Lord, are a God who takes away iniquity and pardons sin, who does not hold your anger forever, but are pleased to show mercy. You, Lord, will return to us and have pity on your people. You will trample down our sins and toss them into the depths of the sea (cf. 7:18-19). The pages of the prophet Isaiah can also be meditated upon concretely during this season of prayer, fasting, and works of charity: “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up (Continued on page 2)

Misericordiae Vultus (cont’d) speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of wa-ter, whose waters fail not” (58:6-11). The initiative of “24 Hours for the Lord,” to be celebrated on the Friday and Saturday preceding the Fourth Week of Lent, should be implemented in every diocese. So many people, including young people, are returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation; through this experience they are rediscovering a path back to the Lord, living a moment of intense prayer and finding meaning in their lives. Let us place the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the centre once more in such a way that it will enable people to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands. For every penitent, it will be a source of true interior peace. I will never tire of insisting that confessors be authentic signs of the Father’s mercy. We do not become good confessors automatically. We become good confessors when, above all, we allow ourselves to be penitents in search of his mercy. Let us never forget that to be confessors means to participate in the very mission of Jesus to be a concrete sign of the constan-cy of divine love that pardons and saves. We priests have received the gift of the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins, and we are responsible for this. None of us wields power over this Sacrament; rather, we are faithful servants of God’s mercy through it. Every confessor must accept the faithful as the father in the parable of the prodigal son: a father who runs out to meet his son despite the fact that he has squan-dered away his inheritance. Confessors are called to em-brace the repentant son who comes back home and to ex-press the joy of having him back again. Let us never tire of also going out to the other son who stands outside, incapable of rejoicing, in order to explain to him that his judgement is severe and unjust and meaningless in light of the father’s boundless mercy. May confessors not ask useless questions, but like the father in the parable, interrupt the speech pre-pared ahead of time by the prodigal son, so that confessors will learn to accept the plea for help and mercy pouring from the heart of every penitent. In short, confessors are called to be a sign of the primacy of mercy always, everywhere, and in every situation, no matter what. La Cuaresma de este Año Jubilar sea vivida con mayor intensidad, como momento fuerte para celebrar y experimentar la misericordia de Dios. ¡Cuántas páginas de la Sagrada Escritura pueden ser meditadas en las semanas de Cuares-ma para redescubrir el rostro misericordioso del Padre! Con las palabras del profeta Miqueas también nosotros podemos repetir: Tú, oh Señor, eres un Dios que cancelas la iniquidad y perdonas el pecado, que no mantienes para siempre tu cólera, pues amas la misericordia. Entonces despuntará tu luz como la aurora y tu herida se curará rápidamente; delante de ti avanzará tu justicia y detrás de ti irá la gloria del Señor. Entonces llamarás, y el Señor responderá; pedirás auxilio, y él dirá: “¡Aquí estoy!”. Si eliminas de ti todos los yugos, el gesto amenazador y la palabra maligna; si partes tu pan con el hambriento y sacias al afligido de corazón, tu luz se alzará en las tinieblas y tu oscuridad será como al mediodía. La iniciativa “24 horas para el Señor”, a celebrarse durante el viernes y sábado que anteceden el IV domingo de Cuaresma, se incremente en las Diócesis. Muchas personas están volviendo a acercarse al sacramento de la Reconciliación y entre ellas muchos jóvenes, quienes en una experiencia semejante suelen reencontrar el camino para volver al Señor, para vivir un momento de intensa oración y re-descubrir el sentido de la propia vida. De nuevo ponemos convencidos en el centro el sacramento de la Reconciliación, porque nos permite experimentar en carne propia la grandeza de la misericordia. Será para cada penitente fuente de verdadera paz interior. Nunca me cansaré de insistir en que los confesores sean un verdadero signo de la misericordia del Padre. Ser confesores no se improvisa. Se llega a serlo cuando, ante todo, nos hacemos nosotros penitentes en busca de perdón. Nunca olvide-mos que ser confesores significa participar de la misma misión de Jesús y ser signo concreto de la continuidad de un amor divino que perdona y que salva. Cada uno de nosotros ha recibido el don del Espíritu Santo para el perdón de los pecados, de esto somos responsables. Ninguno de nosotros es dueño del Sacra-mento, sino fiel servidor del perdón de Dios. Cada confesor deberá acoger a los fieles como el padre en la parábola del hijo pródigo: un padre que corre al en-cuentro del hijo no obstante hubiese dilapidado sus bienes. Los confesores están llamados a abrazar ese hijo arrepentido que vuelve a casa y a manifestar la alegría por haberlo encontrado. No se cansarán de salir al encuentro también del otro hijo que se quedó afuera, incapaz de alegrarse, para explicarle que su juicio severo es injusto y no tiene ningún sentido ante la misericordia del Padre que no conoce confines. No harán preguntas impertinentes, sino como el padre de la parábola interrumpirán el discurso preparado por el hijo pródigo, porque serán capaces de percibir en el corazón de cada penitente la invocación de ayuda y la súplica de perdón. En fin, los confesores están llamados a ser siempre, en todas partes, en cada situación y a pesar de todo, el signo del primado de la misericor-dia. Continuará FRANCISCUS

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2016

“I desire mercy, and not sacrifice” (Mt 9:13). The works of mercy on the road of the Jubilee

Chrism Mass On Thursday, March 17th at 5:30PM, Archbishop Cordileone will celebrate the

Chrism Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral. This is a beautiful celebration of the blessing of

all the oils used in sacramental service throughout the year.

All are invited.

3. The works of mercy God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbour and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in con-crete everyday actions meant to help our neighbours in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, com-forting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that “the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritu-al works of mercy; this will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experi-ence of God’s mercy” (ibid., 15). For in the poor, the flesh of Christ “becomes visible in the flesh of

the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us” (ibid.). It is the unprecedented and scandalous mystery of the extension in time of the suffering of the Innocent Lamb, the burning bush of gratuitous love. Before this love, we can, like Moses, take off our sandals (cf. Ex 3:5), espe-cially when the poor are our brothers or sisters in Christ who are suffering for their faith. In the light of this love, which is strong as death (cf. Song 8:6), the real poor are revealed as those who refuse to see themselves as such. They consider themselves rich, but they are actually the poorest of the poor. This is be-cause they are slaves to sin, which leads them to use wealth and power not for the service of God and others, but to stifle within their hearts the profound sense that they too are only poor beg-gars. 3. Las obras de misericordia La misericordia de Dios transfor-ma el corazón del hombre hacién-dole experimentar un amor fiel, y lo hace a su vez capaz de miseri-cordia. Es siempre un milagro el que la misericordia divina se irra-die en la vida de cada uno de nosotros, impulsándonos a amar al prójimo y animándonos a vivir lo que la tradición de la Iglesia llama las obras de misericordia corporales y espirituales. Ellas nos recuerdan que nuestra fe se traduce en gestos concretos y cotidianos, destinados a ayudar a nuestro prójimo en el cuerpo y en el espíritu, y sobre los que sere-mos juzgados: nutrirlo, visitarlo, consolarlo y educarlo. Por eso, expresé mi deseo de que «el pue-blo cristiano reflexione durante el Jubileo sobre las obras de miseri-cordia corporales y espirituales. Será un modo para despertar nuestra conciencia, muchas veces aletargada ante el drama de la pobreza, y para entrar todavía más en el corazón del Evangelio, donde los pobres son los privile-giados de la misericordia divi-na» (ibíd., 15). En el pobre, en

efecto, la carne de Cristo «se hace de nuevo visible como cuerpo martirizado, llagado, flagelado, desnutrido, en fuga... para que nosotros lo reconozcamos, lo to-quemos y lo asistamos con cuida-do» (ibíd.). Misterio inaudito y escandaloso la continuación en la historia del sufrimiento del Corde-ro Inocente, zarza ardiente de amor gratuito ante el cual, como Moisés, sólo podemos quitarnos las sandalias (cf. Ex 3,5); más aún cuando el pobre es el hermano o la hermana en Cristo que sufren a causa de su fe. Ante este amor fuerte como la muerte (cf. Ct 8,6), el pobre más miserable es quien no acepta reconocerse como tal. Cree que es rico, pero en realidad es el más pobre de los pobres.
