Colecta especial para Viernes Santo Cada año, cada parroquia en los Esta-
dos Unidos toma una colecta el Viernes Santo, según lo señalado por el San-
to Padre. Esta colecta ayuda a apoyar el trabajo de los Franciscanos en la
Tierra Santa. El dinero se utiliza para el cuidado de las personas y los lugares
de la Tierra Santa. Esta colecta ayuda a mantener vivo el cristianismo en esta

Ashes to Easter Continue to drop coins in your Ashes to Easter
Lenten Boxes. All boxes should be returned on Easter Sunday or

Easter Lilies The Ladies Altar Guild will be accepting dona-
tions for Easter Lilies in memory of or in honor of someone.
You may pick up your envelope in the church foyer and place
it in the offering basket.
Holy Week: Holy week celebrations of Palm Sunday, Holy
Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Sunday are the most
important celebrations of the whole year. Please try to make
your effort to attend these days and please see the insert for
more information.
Liturgical ministers of Holy Week:
Passion readers of Palm Sunday and Good Friday: please
stop by the sacristy today to get the reading for practice.

Paul at 10:30 a.m. in Austin, Texas
Holy Thursday April 13: Mass of the Lord’s Supper at
7:00 p.m. Solemn Adoration after Mass until midnight.
Good Friday April 14: Bilingual Stations of the Cross at
5:00 p.m.; Fish Fried dinner at 5:30 p.m – 6:30pm; Good
Friday Service at 7:00 p.m.
Easter Vigil April 15: Service of the Light begins at 8:30 p.m.

Divine Mercy Novena starts on Good Friday April 14th and
goes through Sunday, April 22nd. You may pick up your Chap-

Good Friday Pontifical Collection Every year, each parish in
the United Stat
es takes up a collection on Good Friday, as designated by the
Holy Father. This collection helps support the work of the Fran-
ciscans in the Holy Land. The money is used to care for the peo-
ple and places of the Holy Land. This collection helps keep
Christianity alive in this area made holy by the life, suffering,
death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Jamaica Raffle: St. Mary’s Hispanic community is selling raf-
fle tickets for various prizes; 1st prize: Amana Washer & Elec-

What is Original Sin?
Much of the language in Genesis’ opening chapters is figurative. Nevertheless, the
Catholic Church affirms that we find there a reference to a real event in time that took place at
the very beginning of the human race - a tragedy unequaled in history, known as the Fall (see
Gn 3: 1-24). We know few details, but the basic realities surrounding that fateful development
are clear from the teaching of Scripture (here and elsewhere) and Tradition:
* God created our first human parents in a state of holiness, an original justice
(righteousness), without sin, and thus without shame (see Gn 2:25). They enjoyed a right and
harmonious relationship with God, themselves, each other, and the world around them (see Gn
1:26-31; 2:8-9; 15, 21_25).
* Through their own free choice, however, they disobeyed God, breaking fellowship
with him (see Gn 2:15-17; 3:1-13; Sir 15:14).
* Their disobedience - a turning away from the Source of all life and order - necessarily
brought death and disorder into the world, and above all within themselves. So they “fell” from
their previous condition to a state of sinfulness, misery, and ignorance (see Gn 3:14-24). Their
human nature was deeply wounded, though not totally corrupted.
* Our first parents, having lost their original wholeness, could not pass on to their de-
scendants what they themselves no longer possessed. This deprivation is consequently inher-
ited by all human beings is called “original sin” (see Rom 5:12-19).
* Unlike personal sin, resulting from the wrong choices of individuals, original sin does
not result from our own doing. It is contracted, not committed; we are conceived with it (see Ps
51:7).
* The Sacrament of Baptism cleanses us from original sin. It restores us to original right-
eousness and fellowship with God (see Acts 2:38; 22:16). But after Baptism we are still left
with a certain moral and spiritual weakness (concupiscence), so that even though our wills are
free, we are inclined to sin - an inclination we must continually overcome by God’s grace (see
Rom 6:19; 7:15-24).
