The Word This Week We continue to explore the meaning of baptism, of membership of the Church, of living a life which has been immersed in the life and death of Jesus Christ: in other words, we continue our “Mystagogy” - our training in the mystery of Baptism and the other Sacraments. We hear more about “who Jesus is”, with another “I am” statement: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. We are baptized into His way, His truth and His life.

We hear about the earliest community struggling with the life they are called to by baptism, and Peter again reminds us that baptism builds us into a “spiritual house” with Jesus as our cornerstone. The mystery of the Church is clearly before us today: The Church is the community of those baptized in Christ, the pilgrim people walking with Christ (who has shown us the Father) to the place he has prepared for us. Today’s reading can perhaps make us think a little

about how we form part of this “spiritual house”, the Church, as we journey to the Father. (Source:https://www.salfordliturgy.org.uk/easter4a.htm )

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: Our pantry is still open to serve our neighbors in need during this difficult time. If you know of someone who needs help, please refer them to our pantry, and let them know that the pantry is open from 10 A.M. to noon every Tuesday and Thursday. Currently we are just providing food. We also want to thank all of the people who support the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society!

A Message from Fr. Ben: Folks I want to update you on the ‘re-opening’ effort throughout our parishioners and our diocese. I know that this is squarely on everyone’s mind; it is certainly on mine. Of course, the steps we take are within the structures of leadership from the Archbishop, but we know that every parish’s opening up will be unique to that parish.

As you’re reading, things could have changed from day to day. And I wish that I had a lot of hard answers or decisions even now. I am sorry, but I do not. Whatever information I can offer, I most certainly will.

As is the case with many dioceses in our region, likely we will begin public Masses for SUNDAYS by the end of May. I think the target date is May 30/31st. Which just so happens to be Pentecost. The birthday of the Church through the Holy Spirit would be a great day to open up. It’s possible Sunday masses could be sooner, but I doubt it. Possibly it could be later. I am hopeful it will not be.

It sounds like, SOON, we will at least be able to leave churches open during the day for the faithful to come in and pray and offer private devotions. I know how hard forgoing that one has been. Hang in there folks, it will be soon. Maybe even by next week. The assumption is that once we can unlock church in the daytime, we will quickly be able to offer confession times as well. (Of course, with safety and social distancing). Not long after that, maybe two weeks, there’s a possibility of offering daily Masses again, again with the stringent safety and social distancing. Whenever we do get back to Mass, some things will be different. Some things permanently. Honestly though I think we’ll all be so happy to get back that we can live with whatever! (No, I did not paint the church pink while you were gone).

When Masses are public again, especially Sundays, there will still be no obligation to attend. Right now, the Catholics of Indiana have no obligation to go to Mass (you couldn’t go anyways) but even when we are allowed to go, there will be no obligation until August 15th. So, anyone nervous about coming back, you can stay home. That’s perfectly okay.

Otherwise, there’s just not a lot else to report on folks. Very little has been said officially, and I know this is frustrating. But I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I pray you can too. We WILL get there soon. Stay safe and keep praying. I miss you all.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: St. Mary's Prayer Shawl Ministry has been active despite the shutdowns caused by the virus. The ministry is carried out by devoted parishioners who make the shawls in their own homes, and we have several on hand. If you know of someone who faces ongoing or serious

illness, please contact Anna in the parish office. We will do our best to get prayer shawls to those who need them. May God bless those involved in this ministry and those who wear the shawls as they pray for God's comfort and care.

“Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s

creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.”

Meet Benjamin Popson

If you are kindly reading this, you may be curious about what this nonsense is and who is writing it, or maybe not. Regardless, let me introduce myself:

My name is Benjamin Popson. I am a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis studying to be a parish priest. I will be following Fr. Ben around this summer at St. Lawrence and St. Mary’s learning about how to be a holy and joyful priest in a parish setting.

I am originally from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in New Albany—just down the Ohio—where I first received the sacraments. I am the third of eight children, and no doubt the coolest of the lot. I went to grade school at my home parish, attended Our Lady of Providence High School, and began my undergrad studying Industrial Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette. The Lord bucked St. Paul off his horse; He subtly prodded me to ditch engineering for the priesthood. So, after a year and a half at Purdue, I transferred to Bishop Simon Bruté College-Seminary from where I just graduated at the beginning of this month. In the Fall, I will begin the last four years of my priestly formation at St. Meinrad Seminary.

When I’m not levitating from the church-pews in spiritual ecstasy, I enjoy playing tennis, watching baseball, target shooting, fishing, playing cards, and reading.

I am eager to meet you and look forward to spending time with you soon. Know that you and your families will be in my prayers, and please pray for me.

Peace,

Benjamin Popson
