IntroductionThisisthe2015finalreportfortheSPIEStudentChapteratMichiganTechnologicalUniversity.Ithasbeenayearoftransitionwithallofficerrolesbeingturnedovertonewleadership inthespring.Ourprimaryfocushasbeentoestablishdirectionforourorganizationonthewholeaswellasindividualresponsibilitiesforofficersandmembersalike.Ourcontinuinggoalsincludetherecruitmentofnewmembers,publicanduniversityoutreach,activitiesforstudentinvolvement,long-term group projects, funding for student travel, an increased online presence, andconsiderationforfuturedevelopment.Allinitiativesarediscussedinthesectionsthatfollow.
MembershipTherearecurrently20studentmembersinourorganizationwhoareregisteredwithSPIE.Therearealsoseveralactiveparticipantswhohavenotyetregisteredaspayingmembers.Membershipinformationforchapterofficersandallotherpersonnelisdetailedinthetablebelow.

MeetingsOurorganizationholdsmeetingsonceperweek.Thelastweekofeachmonthisreservedforageneralmeeting to include all organizationmembers. Generalmeetings have been used forgroupprojectupdates,presentationsonconferenceorworkshopexperiences,andjournalclubsessions,amongotherthings.Officermeetingsareheldontheoffweekstodiscussplansfornewactivitiesandallocationoffunds.
RecruitmentOurchapterhostedadepartmentalopenhouseearly in the fall semester for thepurposeofrecruiting new members. The event was geared toward both undergraduate and graduatestudentswhowerenewtotheuniversityorotherwiseunawareofphotonicsasanengineeringdiscipline.Promotionwascarriedoutthroughemailaswellasbyphysicaldistributionoftheflyerseenbelow.Wesawahealthyturnoutofroughly50attendees.Foodandbeverageswereservedwhile the officers introduced themselves and the optics program atMichigan Tech, and ouradvisordiscussedfieldandthepotentialforgroupprojectswithinterestedstudents.Audiencememberswerethengiventhechancetotourourfacilities,participateinopticsdemos,andhavetheirnamesenteredintoadrawingtowinlaserpointersandorganization-brandedpoloshirts.

OutreachSeveraloutreachactivitiestookplaceoverthecourseofthispastyear.TheseeventsservedthevisitingpublicbothinspecializedgroupsandasprospectiveMichiganTechstudentsoncollegetourswith their families.Abrief lectureand seriesofopticsdemonstrationsweregiven to amiddle/highschoolgroupof~20aspartofMichiganTech’sSummerYouthProgramsinmid-July.

AnothercollectionofdemoswasputonforvisitorsatthehighschoollevelconsideringMichiganTechforcollege.Theeventwasourcontributiontotheuniversity-widefallopenhouseeventforsuchstudentswiththeirfamiliesinSeptemberofthisyear.Oursetuphadanopen-doorpolicy,andwewereabletoreachmanyinterestedparties(estimatedat100persons)throughoutthedayandleadfruitfuldiscussionsofopticsandphotonics.
OurstudentchapteralsocollaboratedtwicethisyearwithMichiganTech’sBlueMarbleSecurityEnterprise todevelophologramswith theWomen inComputerScience scholarshipprogram.Participantswerewalkedthroughtheimagingprocessbyourorganization’smembersinordertocreatepersonalizedholographicplatesthattheywereabletotakehomeattheend.

InvolvementOurchaptermaintainsanefforttoseekwidespreadinvolvementfromwithinthestudentbodyat Michigan Tech. We’ve hosted several activities and workshops targeting a more generalpopulation than what we see within our immediate membership circle (though our ownmembers are always welcome to join). For instance, a photo contest was organized by ourchapter during the spring semester.Wewere able to secure funding for gift cards and laserpointerstobeofferedasprizesandincentivesforparticipation.TheactivitywasbilledinsupportofIYL2015.Wereceived16entriesintotalforthecompetition.

Inadditiontothephotocompetition,wehostedseveralstandaloneholographyworkshopsthisyear.We find such imaging opportunities to be very successful in attracting interdisciplinaryinterestatMichiganTech.ThephotographsbelowweretakenduringoneparticularworkshopnearHalloweeninwhichjack-o’-lanternfigurineswereimagedbyreflectionholography.
ProjectsWehavetakenontwostudentprojectstobeexecutedbysubgroupswithinourorganization.Namely,therestorationofouruniversity’sownAMJOCHobservatoryandtheconstructionofaCO2lasercompriseourcurrentgroupprojects.Theideabehindtheseprojectsistoprovideteam-basedextracurricularengineeringanddesignexperiencetoourmemberswhileofferinguniqueleadership and learning opportunities pertaining specifically to optics and photonics. Theobservatorywillultimatelybeutilizedforspectroscopicimagingandsatellitetrackingalongwithpublicoutreachevents,andthegaslasercanbeappliedtoresearchandclassworkinalaboratorysetting.

TravelTwo undergraduates and several graduate students within our organization are presentingpapersatSPIEPhotonicsWest2016.Wewereapproachedbyahandfuloforganizationmemberswho expressed interest in attending the conference and exhibition if possible. Through theinternalfundraisingeffortsbyoneofourown,sixadditionalstudentswillhavetheopportunitytoattendtheconferenceinSanFranciscothiscomingFebruary.Thegroupisadiversemixofgraduate and undergraduate students spanning the Electrical and Computer Engineering,BiomedicalEngineering,andPhysicsdepartments.
WebsitePartofourreorganizationendeavorthisyearwastoredesignandoverhaulourwebsiteinawaythatallowsforlong-standingupkeepwithoutmuchinthewayoftraining.AnewdomainwasacquiredthroughOSA,andourcustomthemewasmadeWordPress-compatiblesothatminimalknowledgeofwebdevelopmentwillberequiredoffutureofficersforchangesandupdatestobemade. The site also syncs with such services as Facebook and CollegiateLink for seamlessintegrationwithexistingchapterinformationoutlets.Thoughdevelopmentisstillunderway,thecurrentbuildcanbeviewedathttp://mtu.osahost.org/.
TreasuryTheinformationprovidedinthefollowingtableoutlinesouraccountbalances,fundsraised,andfundsexpendedfortheyear.Ourfinalbalancefor2015willberolledoverintoourbeginningbalancefornextyear.Theexpected$4,550frominternalsourcesforthePhotonicsWesttripwillbeappliedimmediatelytowardtravel/lodgingexpensesandreflectedonnextyear’sbudget.

ConclusionIthasbeenaveryproductiveyearforourchapter,andtheofficershavelearnedmuchabouttheirnewlyassumedrolesintheorganization.Weaimtocontinueexpandingourinfluenceandvisibility on campuswhile findingnewways to impact our community throughoutreach andeducation.Wehaveavarietyofpotentialactivitiesintheworksfor2016,includinganarrangedindustryvisitwithaMidwestphotonicscompany,aseriesofguestlectureswithpossibilityfortie-inwithanon-campusphotonicsconference,andrebootedaffairsfrompastyearsincludingour Youth Outreach Program and Photonics Learning Center. We will emphasize aninterdisciplinaryapproachtophotonicsgoingforwardbyencouraginginputfromalldepartmentsandpursuingcollaborationwithotherchaptersandsections.Wearegrateful fortheongoingsupportfromSPIEandlookforwardtoanotheryearofcelebratinglight.
