INTRODUCTION
SPIE Student Chapter of University of Calcutta was establised in 2006. Just like a
sapling needs to be nurtured in order to turn it into a full grown tree, the hard work of
our chapter members has contributed a lot in the growth of this chapter. Thus we
proudly announce that the year 2016 marked the completion of 10 successful years of
SPIE Student Chapter of University of Calcutta. The year also witnessed many events
and activities which speaks volume of its success.
From previous year, SPIE Student Chapter activities were merged with the activities of
other Student Chapters of this Department of Applied Optics And Photonics - namely
Optical Society Of America (OSA) and Opical Society Of India (OSI). Since then all
the Student Chapter activities are jointly conducted.Working together incessently and
sincerely ,our SPIE Chapter members always try to disseminate the concepts of optics
among graduates, undergraduates and school going students by demonstrating optical
models, organising seminars and interactive sessions. The creative models made by
our members and most importantly the kits sent to us by SPIE helped the students
understand optics in an easier manner. Moreover, our members successfully organised
many departmental seminars where our research scholars, alumnus and faculty
members gave the students insight into discoveries and advancements in optics and
photonics, and also encouraged them to make career in this field.
This report summarizes all the activities organised by this chapter under the guidance
of our Faculty Advisor.

7. Outreach at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and
Technology (IIEST), Shibpur on 29th September 2016 :
Our SPIE Student Chapter in collaboration with a professional organisation
named “Sunshell Power” held a workshop on renewable energy, energy
efficiency and smart city. Natural Energy conservation is the prime need of the
hour, so it’s high time we start conserving natural energy for our future use. This
workshop was divided in three phases. Initially many eminent professors from
significant universities talked about the need to conserve energy and different
process of harnessing natural energies like wind and solar energy, and then they
spoke of the concept of green building and smart city. After that the students were
given hands-on experience with the software like PVSS and metronome. Finally
an extended part of this workshop was to visit IIEST (formerly known as BESU)
labs in order to get a better insight of practical implementation of the methods of
energy conservation.
Dr. Tathagata Sarkar of IIEST (Shibpur) showed the students the solar panels
installed on the roof of their institute and described how they use solar energy to
generate electricity which drives one of the wings of the building. He also showed
the Rain Gauge they installed. There was another section where they produce bio
gas out of the natural composts. At the end of the workshop all students were
given certificates.
