2012 Activity Report:
1. International Night of Xidian University

We attended the international night of Xidian university. We offer some fruits and beverage. We
enjoyed a great night. We would like to interact with international students make friends with
them.
2. Domestic invited academic report

Reporter: Xingsong Hou
Title:
Professor Xingsong Hou is graduated from Xian Jiaotong University and obtain his doctor
degree at 2005. Being an visiting lecture at Columbia University from Oct 2010 to Oct 2011. He
has been working and teaching on data compression for a long time. Prof. Hou published 30
papers. He is interested on joint source-channel coding, wireless video transmission and sparse
compress sesing of images.
Compress sensing theory is a new theory for signal sampling and compression. Now is being
used in many fields with the rapid development of imaging technologies. The report is including:
basic theory and technology of compress sensing, sparse presentation of image and processing.

3. Officer travel to SPIE Optics & Photonics 2012

As our chapter’s vice President, Wen Wei applied the travel grant to SPIE Optics & Photonics
2012 at San Diego. He attended the 11th
SPIE student chapter leadership workshop on Aug 12
where she met many other chapter officers. She learned many team leader and team work skills.
She visited the SPIE exhibition and planned to make a poster of our chapter next year. Also she
joined the outreach acitivity.

She met many student officers from Asia and made connections with other SPIE student
chapters and share their experience. It’s important for our chapter’s development to keep in touch
with other similar chapters.

Also, Wen Wei presented a paper on SPIE Optics & Photonics titled “Onboard Optimized
hardware Implementation of JPEG-LS Encoder Based on FPGA”. A novel hardware
implementation of JPEG-LS Encoder based on FPGA is introduced in this paper. Using a
look-ahead technique, the critical delay paths of LOCO-I algorithm, such as feedback-loop circuit
of parameters updating, are improved. Then an optimized architecture of JPEG-LS Encoder is
proposed. Specially, run-mode encode process of JPEG-LS is covered in the architecture as well.
Experiment results show that the circuit complexity and memory consumption of the proposed
structure are much lower, while the data processing speed is much higher than some other
available structures. So it is very suited for the application of high-speed lossless image
compression of satellite sensing image onboard.
4. Annual Activity: Team building and officer voting

We hold an annural activity to welcome our chapter members. First I give all members a
training session for team work and team building. After that, all members are divided into four
groups. Each group need to draw an poster for their group and need to finish a serie of team work
games. We offer those winners with excellent gifts. Finally, we voted the officer for 2013. We also
did a feedback survey and the survey result shows everyone enjoys this activity.
With this activity we increase the communication with each other and help us to develop more
efficiently. This help a lot on team building.

5. 2013 SPIE student member recruitment
Date : 2012.11
We recruit more new students to attend our chapter. Now we have 33 SPIE student members.
We are planning to enroll more at 2013.
In order to have better understandings of others’ research fields and enhence the
communications and connections between members, a series of seminars was organized for
members and non-members. We held the Xidian SPIE student members recruitment activity. The
old members introduced the situation of Xidian student chapter and arranged the works of new
activities in the future. After the official course, we introduced ourselves one by one to make the
new student to know each other and our old members well.
2013 Activity Plan:
1. Invite one international professor to give us an academic lecture.
2. Call team building activity.
3. Advertise SPIE and our chapter.
4. Invite at least two domestic professor to give us academic reports.
5. Attending SPIE conference to make connection with more chapters.
6. Recruit new members.
7. Maintain a website of our chapter.
