Before you use any of this material, or watch the film with your class (probably in the English for Contemporary Life option) I recommend reading the general introduction first. As we all know, watching films in class can backfire horribly, so there's probably a few steps we can take to make sure that doesn't happen. There are a few ideas for this in the general introduction. General Introduction & Hints/Tips: This section is yet to be added (but I'm working on it). Teacher's Guide to Materials: A basic guide to using the materials Answers to the tasks & questions Character Profiles *Pictures of each character are available on the official site - just print them, then stick them to the profiles - this will help the students get to know the characters.* Time: about 1 hour Why: This is reading, speaking and vocabulary practice. It also will give the students information on the characters in the film and their relationships with each other. This is important as it will help the students get to know the characters, as their relationships are what the film is all about. How: Students are given one character profile each They read the profiles & make sure they understand them Some of the possibly difficult vocab is defined You'll have to go round making sure they understand it all Then the students mingle and have to meet every other student They tell each student about their character, and hear about all the other characters too The idea is that they don't just read from the paper, but eventually are able to describe their characters from memory - Don't let them just read from the profiles - make them memorise details if possible You can revise / consolidate what they've learned by putting the pictures of each character on OHT and as a group talk about the characters' names and information about each one

Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Teacher's Guide to Materials: • A basic guide to using the materials • Answers to the tasks & questions Character Profiles *Pictures of each character are available on the official site - just print them, then stick them to the profiles - this will help the students get to know the characters.* Time: about 1 hour Why: This is reading, speaking and vocabulary practice. It also will give the students information on the characters in the film and their relationships with each other. This is important as it will help the students get to know the characters, as their relationships are what the film is all about. How: • Students are given one character profile each • They read the profiles & make sure they understand them • Some of the possibly difficult vocab is defined • You'll have to go round making sure they understand it all • Then the students mingle and have to meet every other student • They tell each student about their character, and hear about all the other characters

too • The idea is that they don't just read from the paper, but eventually are able to describe

their characters from memory - Don't let them just read from the profiles - make them memorise details if possible

• You can revise / consolidate what they've learned by putting the pictures of each character on OHT and as a group talk about the characters' names and information about each one

Part 1 Start: The opening of the film Stop: The opening titles How: • The beginning of the film is quite difficult as it is very fast. • The students read the questions before they watch. • Make sure they understand the questions before they watch • They can read the tapescript first to make it easier. more, Shaun to want to want to do it too 10. Not yet. 11. He'll book a restaurant (place that does fish), he’ll change

Part 2 Start: From the end of the starting titles (Shaun walks into the living room and yawns like a zombie) Stop: Shaun opens the front door to go to the shop How: • Again, the students read Qs first and understand, then watch and answer Answers:

1. They're talking about Ed (and about how he doesn't do the housework, and also a bit about when the 3 of them were at uni together)

Part 3 Start: From when Shaun opens the front door/front gate Stop: Just after the girl faints & before the staff meeting begins It is worth spending a little time on this as there is some nice visual humour, some useful bits of vocab and because it pays off later as the clip is repeated (but with slightly different circumstances) How: • This is a kind of bingo game • First, the students read the sentences and you make sure they understand everything • The students pick any 6 actions from the list • They watch the clip and tick their 6 actions when they see them happen • First one to get 6 shouts BINGO! • You may need to play the clip again to show which of the things definitely happened

and which didn't Other ideas: • Go through the verbs and put them in the past tense. • In pairs the students test each others' memories of what happened in the clip - they

produce past simple sentences about what happened. Part 4 Start: From the beginning of the staff meeting Stop: To where Shaun bumps into Yvonne in the street How: Students read the Qs first, then watch and get answers Answers:

1. To remind him of his 'bimonthly' visit to his Mum's house, and to remind him to get some nice flowers.

2. Buy some flowers for his Mum 3. "To a wonderful Mum"

Part 5 Start: From where Shaun bumps into Yvonne Stop: Shaun realizes that he's forgotten something - We're going out for a meal tonight. - Anywhere nice? How: Students read first and understand, then watch and answer Answers:

Answers: 1. Shaun has forgotten to book the table (of course) 2. You promised you'd stop smoking.

You promised us free cable. You promised we'd go on holiday.

You promised things would change. You promised you'd try drinking red wine instead of beer!

3. She means dump Shaun, and she's thinking about dumping/splitting up with Shaun

Part 7 Start: Shaun heads for The Winchester & dumps the flowers in the bin Stop: Ed and Shaun leave the pub How: • The students read the sentences and predict what they think Ed will say to Shaun. • You'll need to check they understand • Get them to justify their answers • Watch the clip to check answers Answers:

Ed says these things: • You’ve got your pint. You’ve got your pig snacks. What more do you want?

• Oh… Do you want your favourite monkey?

• See. I knew you’d get over her.

• You know what we should do tomorrow? Keep drinking!!

• You don’t need Liz to have a good time.

• I’m not going to bombard you with clichés.

• It’s not the end of the world.

He also says, There’s plenty more fish in the sea and If you love her, let her go but

only because he says he isn't going to say those things.

Part 8 Start: Ed & Shaun are in the house playing records Stop: Shaun falls asleep in the kitchen How: • The students guess who said the quotes and why. • Again, this should help them to understand it when they listen to the fast

paced dialogue on screen • Get them to justify their answers • Watch the clip to check answers Answers: 1 & 2.

• Just keep it down, alright? PETE to Ed & Shaun about the noise

• Come on, stop it. We’re friends. SHAUN to Pete and Ed

• You want to live like an animal? Go and live in the shed!! PETE to Ed

• Oh leave him alone! SHAUN to Pete

• Stop defending him Shaun – all he ever does is hold you back. PETE to Shaun

• Does it make your life easier having someone around who’s more of a loser than

you are? PETE to Shaun about Ed

• I assume it was Liz who did the dumping. PETE to Shaun

• Next time I see him – he’s dead. ED to Shaun about Pete

3. He got mugged by some crackheads, and they bit him (does this mean he was bitten by

a zombie??)

Also: Here the students guess what Shaun wrote on the whiteboard in the kitchen. Ask

them about this when you have finished watching the clip. Then you can check it in part 9

(you'll have to pause it briefly before continuing with pt.9)

Part 9 Start: Shaun wakes up in the kitchen & sees the whiteboard (here you can check the last

question)

Stop: Shaun gets back to his house

How:

• In this clip, Shaun walks to the shop again

• You could ask the class what they remember about the last time he walked to the shop

• Then look at the list of actions in pt.9

• They watch the clip - if the actions are different, they change them

Page 6: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

Part 10 Start: When Shaun gets back from the shop

Stop: Ed says "There's a girl in the garden"

How:

• The students put the sentence in order first, then watch it and check

Answers:

• Although no-one official is prepared to comment, religious groups are calling it ‘judgement day’. There’s…

• …panic on the streets of London… • …as an increasing number of reports of… • …serious attacks on… • …people who are literally being… • …eaten alive.

Part 11 Start: Ed says "There's a girl in the garden"

Stop: After they kill the zombies in the garden, Ed says "You've got red on you"

How:

• The students make up their own answers

• You could teach some grammar here - modal verbs, second conditionals etc.

• They chat about what they would do and why

• Then they watch and describe what Shaun & Ed did

Answers: Students' own answers

Part 12 Start: The news reporter says 'lf you know someone who has been bitten, it is absolutely essential that you isolate them immediately.' Stop: Ed says "We're coming to get you Barbara!" How: Pretty straightforward really. • Let them read the Qs first. • They match Barbara's replies to Shaun before they watch • They watch and get answers/check answers Answers: 1. a. He might be one of them (a zombie), b. He might still be annoyed 2. Here's the complete conversation:

Page 7: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

Shaun: I was going to call you. Are you OK?

Barbara: Yes. Shaun: Are you sure?

Barbara: Some men tried to get into the house

Shaun: Well, are they still there?

Barbara: I'm not sure. We've shut the curtains

Shaun: Well did you try the police?

Barbara: Well, I thought about it

Barbara: No, I'm fine I'm fine!

Shaun: Mum??

Barbara: Well, they were a bit 'bitey'

Shaun: Mum have you been bitten?

Barbara: Oh, he's fine! A bit under the weather

Shaun: Is he…?

3. He's been bitten Part 13 Start: Ed says "so what's the plan" Stop: Shaun says "How's that for a slice of fried gold" and then they go "Yeaaah boiiiii!" How: • You could do this any way you like: • They could read the notes first, then watch, then decide the plan • or They don't read & just watch, then tick the correct notes • or They just watch and then try to remember each stage of the plan without looking at

any of the notes.# Part 14 Start: They say "Yeah boiiii!" Stop: They get to Barabara's house How: Quite a long section this one. The answers are near the beginning of the clip • They read the Qs, then watch & get answers • You could do something on Present Perfect Tense here - I've always wanted to … Answers: 1. SHaun has to do a wee 2. He's always wanted to drive Pete's car

Page 8: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

He's always wanted to drive a Jag Part 15 Start: They get to Barbara's house Stop: Shaun & Barbara have a conversation in the kitchen How: • Read the Qs first, then watch and get answers Answers: 1. She wants to stay and wait for the doctor 2. The correct answers are a, b & c Part 16 Start: The beginning of the chat in the kitchen Stop: Just before they leave the house How: • Some words have been 'randomly' removed • The students have to use their knowledge of grammar, vocab, collocation etc to guess

the missing words • the words are not provided • to make it a but easier for them you could write the words in random order on the

board • They complete the dialogue and then watch and check • You may need to check they understood the conversation Answers: Here's the complete dialogue Shaun: Mum, how much do you love Philip? Barbara:- Two sugars, is it? Shaun:- I haven't had sugar in my tea since 1983. Barbara: Oh, yes. Will you cut me some bread, love? Shaun: Mum, look, how much do you love Philip? Barabara: Do we have to go through all that again? Shaun: What would you say if I told you that Philip's been quite unkind to me? Barabara: You were'nt easy to live with. Shaun: He chased me round the garden with a bit of wood! Barbara: You did call him a you-know-what. Shaun: Did he tell you that? Motherfucker.

Barbara: - Shaun! Shaun: Sorry, Mother... Mum! Did you know that on several occasions... he touched me? That wasn't true. Made it up. Shouldn't have, sorry. Shaun: - You don't understand... Barbara: - No, you don't understand. Philip is my husband and has been for years and I would at least expect you to respect my feelings. Barbara: You must be more adult about these things. Philip:(Growling) Yeah. Come on, Shaun. There comes a time when... you just... gotta be a man. Part 17 Start: They leave the house together Stop: Around the middle of the conversation in Liz's place (There is a crossover here between pt17 and pt18 actually) How: • Same old thing - Complete the gaps • Before they watch to get answers get them to guess who said each one • Then they watch and get answers Answers: 1. Part 19 Start: They get into the car

Stop: They get out of the car

How:

• They fill the gaps in the dialogue first

• If you want to give them some more help tell them that the words are provided in a box

at the bottom of the page

• They also read the Qs and get ready to check the dialogue and get answers to the Qs

Answers:

Dialogue:

Philip: Shaun… being a father is not easy. You were twelve when I met you. You’d

already grown up so much. I just wanted you to be strong and not give up because you

lost your Dad.

Shaun: Philip, you don’t have to explain.

Philip: No, I do. I always loved you Shaun, and I always thought you had it in you to do

well. You just needed motivation, somebody to look up to and… I thought it could be

me_. Just take good care of your Mum. There’s a good boy.

Shaun: Ed, can you pull over?

Ed: Two seconds.

Questions: 1. He'd already grown up so much by the time he was 12 2. He just wanted him to be strong and not give up because he'd lost his Dad. 3. He loved him, and yes he believed in him 4. He needed motivation and someone to look up to 5. Student's own answers. I think he has, because although they don't get on, Shaun is alright and is essentially a good person who is willing to fight for what he loves. You could argue though, that Shaun is a bit of a disorganised mess - his girlfriend has dumped him, he has a rubbish job etc… Part 20 Start: They leave the car and begin to creep behind people's houses Stop: Just after Dianne's acting lesson, but before they try to get past the zombies How: • Students match the words in the little box to answer the first question

Page 11: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

• They read the other Qs and understand, then watch & get answers Answers: 1. They're taking a short cut. They're avoiding the zombies. They're heading for the pub. 2. They're on holiday in Antigua 3. He says it is just because of survivial (i.e. he's not trying to prove himself to her) 4. No 5. She thinks she recognises one of her friend's houses / one of her friends 6. Lots 7. They're going to act like / impersonate zombies Part 21 Start: They start walking between the zombies, on the way to the pub Stop: Ed and Shaun finish arguing How: • 1. They read the quote and guess who said it & what it means & what stick your neck

out means • 2. They look at the list of actions and chat about which ones they expect to happen &

why • They watch and find out the answers Answers: 1. Shaun says it to Ed Stick your neck out means - a. 2. These things happen:

- Shaun tries to shout to the pub landlord (John) through the letter box - They get past the zombies - David says “break the window” - Shaun mentions another way in - Shaun slaps the phone out of Ed’s hand - Ed’s phone goes off - Ed tells Shaun to “f*ck off”

Part 22 Start: They realise that the zombies have noticed them Stop: Shaun runs away and the others climb into the pub How: • They discuss what they think is going to happen next, by looking at the options • They watch the scene and find out Answers: Of course, these things happen:

o David throws a bin through the window and they climb into the pub o Shaun distracts the zombies and lets the others escape

Page 12: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

Part 23 Start: They get into the pub Stop: Shaun grabs the packet of nibbles (pork scratchings?) How: • They try to put the dialogue together before they watch (compare with

partners etc) • They watch and check Answers: Here's the complete dialogue: David: We need to think about blocking up this window here. We’re totally exposed. ( c )

Liz: How will Shaun get back in? David: I’m sure he’ll knock. …oh for goodness’ sake let’s get some lights on. ( I ) Liz: David wait! David: The power’s off ( g )

Liz: That’s a good thing. We don’t want to advertise our whereabouts more than we already have. Do we David? David: No, of course not Lizzie. I’m just being proactive. There’s no lights, no power, where’re the

owners? And there’s that bloody great hole in the window. ( a ) Ed: You did that you twat! David: Well somebody had to do something. I don’t know if you’d noticed back there but we were

in a spot of bother. Somebody has to take control of the situation, and if none of you are prepared

to accept that responsibility, then perhaps I should. ( j ) Barbara: Will Shaun be gone long? Liz: He’ll be back soon. David: How can you know that? ( e )

Dianne: I don’t think he’d leave us Daffs. David: Wouldn’t he? Lizzie how can you put your faith in a man you spectacularly binned for being

unreliable? A man whose idea of a romantic nightspot and an impenetrable fortress are the same

thing. This is a pub! We are in a pub! What are we going to do? ( f )

Ed: Get a round in? Liz: Let’s just keep quiet and wait for Shaun. We can barricade the window when he gets back. David: What then? How long? Days? Weeks? Month? What? What about food? What are we going

to eat? ( b )

Dianne: Toasties. Ed: Yeah, there’s a brevvel out back. David: Oh great then, saved by nibbles! That must be why Shaun took us here. Before he buggered

off! ( h )

Liz: He’s coming back! David: Why? Because he promised? And even if he does, do you think his master plan is going to

extend to anything more than just sitting and eating peanuts in the dark?

Liz: I don’t know David! I don’t know any more than you do. But what I do know is that we’re here now and we have to make the best of it. Ed get me a double vodka. Ed: Right you are.

Page 13: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

Part 24 There's a bit of a gap between pts 23 & 24 Start: From when they realise that the gun works & Shaun says "Ok, but dogs can look up" Stop: We see Barbara's bloody bite How: • As above, there is a gap between 23 & 24 so you could let them watch this after

checking answers to pt23 and before looking at pt24 • They read the Qs first, then watch and get answers Answers: 1. Ed - He shot his sister in the leg with an air rifle 2. I can't remember! You're on your own I'm afraid… 3. a. Shaun b. Ed c. They're going to look out 4. SHe's been bitten 5. She didn't want to worry SHaun 6. The man in the garden (with the dressing gown on) bit her Part 25 Start: Just after Shaun shoots his Mum (so sad…) Stop: They go through the trapdoor into the cellar How: • This is the most explicit part of the film so you may want to handle it carefully, or even

skip it • It's difficult because you may need to watch it twice to check the exercise • They read each sentence first, then watch the scene to check • Then they put the events in order Answers: Here's the correct order of events:

• David gets his guts pulled out by zombies • Dianne tries to save David and attacks the zombies with one of David’s

legs • zombies break through all the doors • Liz uses a coat stand to push the zombies back

• Shaun tries to shoot the zombies while Ed makes some Molotov cocktails • Liz smashes a bottle over a zombie’s head • zombie Pete walks in • Ed gets bitten in the neck and the arm • Shaun shouts “NOOOOOOOO!” • Shaun shoots zombie Pete through the eye

• Shaun and Liz jump over the bar • Liz lands on top of Shaun • Ed jumps over the bar too • Shaun pours spirits along the bar and lights it • Shaun grabs Ed a cloth from the bar • Shaun burns his hand

Page 14: Shaun of the Dead TEACHER'S GUIDE...Shaun of the Dead - Teacher's Guide Hello. Welcome to the Shaun of the Dead Teacher's Guide. You have chosen wisely. Before you use any of this

• the shells on the bar go off an kill lots of zombies • they go through a trapdoor into the cellar

Part 26 Start: They go into the cellar Stop: After Ed farts and says "I'll stop doing them when you stop laughing" etc How: • The students can discuss their answers to Q1 in pairs, or groups • They look at the other questions, then watch and get answers Answers: 1. Students own answers - they discuss this before they watch 2. Shaun thinks: Shaun’s idea to go to the Winchester was a bad one Shaun really ‘ballsed this up’ Shaun is useless Liz thinks: Shaun shouldn’t feel so responsible Shaun tried - he did something, and that’s what counts 3. Shaun's going to shoot Liz, then he's going to blow his own brains out (kill themselves, commit suicide etc) 4. He'll only hold them back 5. He can't hit anything with it - he's rubbish 6. Because he was shouting at him earlier on 7. Because he has farted. Part 27 Start: After the zombies get killed and they are rescued by Yvonne - Shaun walks into the living room yawning again Stop: Just before Shaun goes into the garden - Don't show the final scene yet! How: • They read the first part of question 1, then watch and get answers • They do the matching exercise and answer question 2 after they have watched the clip • You can discuss question 2 with the whole group, then show him going into the garden

to play Playstation with Zombie Ed Answers: 1. They do all the things in the list. I'm sure you can match the expressions yourself… 2. Here, the students speculate about why he is going into the garden. Observant students will notice that Shaun says "2 seconds" which is something that Ed says at regular intervals during the film - this is a kind of clue that he's going to see Ed. That's it, but you can play the board game now, and this is a chance to revise the things they have learned while watching the film, and to have a bit of fun too. Obviously, if the students (and you) have had quite enough of Shaun of the Dead, you may want to move onto something completely different! The game is a good laugh though (although it does require quite a lot of cutting up).

Rules of the Board Game: Rules of the Game:

- THE AIM OF THE GAME is to go around the board as many times as possible and collect pints

- THE WINCHESTER - Every time you pass The Winchester, you collect 1 pint

- Q: When you land on this square, take a Q card. If you answer correctly, you can stay on that square. If you can’t answer, you have to go back to your previous square

- TEXT MESSAGE: When you land on these, pick up a Text Message card. It will tell you to move somewhere else on the board. If you pass through the Winchester – collect a pint!

- ZOMBIE ATTACK – Roll the dice. If you get a 1 or a 6 – YOU’VE BEEN BITTEN, and you BECOME A ZOMBIE. If you are a zombie you can only move 1 or 2 squares every turn (1-3 on the dice = 1 square / 4-6 = 2 squares). If you land on the same square as another player – YOU BITE THEM, and THEY BECOME A ZOMBIE TOO! To be cured of your zombie-disease you must get to The Winchester and have a pint. After that, you’re a normal human again. ZOMBIE ATTACK squares have no effect on players who are already zombies.

- PETE’S CAR – land here and you can roll the dice again

- PHILIP’S JAGUAR – The same as Pete’s car

- WORDS OF THE DEAD – Try to remember an adjective, any adjective from the film.

- TAKE A SHORT CUT – Follow the short cut to the next square - There should be a line from Short Cut to the empty square.

- FILM SPOT – You have to talk about your favourite film for 1 minute. If you don’t talk for a minute you have to go back to your previous square.

- FREE QUESTION – You can ask another player any question you can think of (but not a really personal one)

- TRAPPED IN THE CELLAR – Miss a turn, or wait for another player to rescue you.

- WHEN DOES THE GAME END??? – You can set a time limit (e.g. at the end of the lesson!) or a limit to the number of pints you can have. Or when the questions are finished.
