DEDICATION OF THE CATHEDRAL
T he dedication of a church is meant to set apart
a building for the divine worship of the Church.
Almost everything we use in the worship of the
Church is blessed and consecrated and taken out of
the common and secular use to be used only for the
worship of the Church: the sacraments, but above all
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is why we dedicate
churches.
The ceremony of dedication is an ancient ceremony in
which the bishop anoints the walls of the church,
blesses the church and consecrates the altar. For the
anointing and consecration of the church the bishop
uses Holy Chrism, the oil consecrated by him on Holy
Thursday. This is the oil used at baptisms, ordinations
and to bless the most sacred things. This is done in
churches to remind us that a dedicated place is indeed
a holy place. When we are baptized we are reminded
that we are united to Christ in His life and death, we
too are set apart to become the Mystical Body of
Christ which is the Church.
In the ancient dedication ceremony the bishop would
trace with his crozier the Greek and Latin alphabets, the
elements of the two principal languages in which
Scripture and Tradition are written. For this there were
two lines of ashes running transversely from end to end of
the church and crossing in the center of the nave. This was
done because sacred science comes to us from doctrinal
authority hence the alphabet, on ashes because it is
understood only by the humble, and a cross because our
Faith is summed up in Jesus Crucified.

Even though it opened in 1900, our Cathedral was not
dedicated until 1953. This was because Catholic
churches could only be consecrated once they were
free from debt. The ceremony of dedication was
celebrated by Archbishop William M. Duke and 35
bishops from across Canada and the United States
attended the dedication. The dedication also
coincided with Archbishop Duke's golden and silver
jubilees of priestly ordination and consecration as a
bishop, respectively.
Why then do we remember this event? It helps us
remember those who came before us and the great
sacrifice of those who built this beautiful church. We
should also reflect on the privilege we have because
we have this beautiful place of worship… many in the
world are not as fortunate. For us this also means that
we have to work to keep this place for the future, to
take care of it, to help in its upkeep when we can, and
to pray for the priests and the community who call
this church their home.

Dedication of the Cathedral, October 3
On Wednesday, October 3 at 5:10 pm there will be a
special Mass celebrated by Archbishop J. Michael
Miller csb, to celebrate the feast of the dedication of
the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. All
are welcome to join.
First Friday Devotions and Luncheon, Oct 5
Mass at 12:10 pm followed by exposition of the
Blessed Sacrament. The church will be open for
Adoration in the afternoon. Benediction before the
5:10 pm Mass. Lunch in the Hall will be served after
the 12:10 pm Mass. Enjoy soup and sandwiches, $5/
person, hosted by Cathedral Volunteers.
Archbishop’s dinner, October 30
We still have some spots left at one of the Cathedral

office. Tickets are $175.00 ($90 tax receipt).
Coast to coast rosary, October 7
Canada is following the example of Poland, Ireland,
the United Kingdom and the United States in
holding a coast-to-coast rosary event on Sunday
October 7. The event is organized by Children of the
Eucharist Canada. “We are inviting Catholics across
Canada to pray together to call upon God through
the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary
to heal our country and return it to holiness,”
according to the group’s website Rosary Coast to
Coast. At Holy Rosary Cathedral we seek to join
with the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for the respect
for human life, marriage and family according to
God’s plan. Join us on Sunday October 7 at 3 pm for
the regular Divine Mercy prayers. They will be
followed by the recitation of the Rosary and then
Vespers (including Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament and Benediction).

St. Therese Feast Day, October 1
S t. Therese, Flower of fervor and love, please intercede for us.
Fill our hearts with your pure love of God. As we approach and celebrate your feast day, make us more aware of the goodness of God and how well He tends His garden.
Instill in us your little way of doing ordinary things with extra-ordinary love. Give us the hearth of a child who wonders at life and Embraces everything with loving enthusiasm. Teach us your delight in God’s ways So that divine charity may blossom in our hearts. Little Flower of Jesus, bring our petitions (mention in silence here) before God, our Father.
With your confidence, we come before Jesus as God's children, because you are our heavenly friend. As we celebrate the Feast Day of your homecoming in heaven, continue to shower roses and grace upon us. R. Amen

XXVI Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Readings

Mass Reflection
We all know that Moses was filled with the Spirit of the Lord, but today’s first reading tells us that God took the Spirit and shared it with seventy-two elders of Israel. Unfortunately, two of the elders, Eldad and Medad, were not with everyone else when this happened. But that didn’t stop God. To everyone’s surprise, the Spirit fell upon Eldad and Medad, even though they were not at the “ordination.” Hearing the news, Moses declared, “Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!” (Num 11:29).
There is a similar story in today’s Gospel. John told Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him” because “whoever is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:38, 39, 40). In both of these stories, people were harshly judging someone who was trying to do God’s will but who didn’t fit into their expectations.
Today, we still believe that the Spirit falls on everyone who is baptized and accepts Jesus in faith. As Peter said, “The promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off” (Acts 2:39). Those who are “far off” includes us. Like Moses and the elders, the apostles, and the man John condemned, we too have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. We too are meant to be prophets.
Being a prophet doesn’t mean shouting in the desert like John the Baptist did. It doesn’t mean confronting kings and princes like Jeremiah and Amos did. A prophet is someone who brings Jesus and his words to the world. That’s our job. Jesus is asking us to tell people how wonderful he is. He is asking us to proclaim his mercy, his goodness, and his salvation. And he’s asking us to do it with a heart filled with his love.If Moses were here, he’d tell us, “By the power of the Holy Spirit, you are a prophet. So get out there and proclaim God’s word to a hurting world. I wish that every member of the Church would take up this call.” “Lord, help me to be your prophet.”
