MINISTER FOR EDUCATION VISIT Last Wednesday the newly appointed Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell, visited our School. She met with students and staff and toured our school finding out about our various programs and activities. Our student leaders did an absolutely amazing job talking with the Minister and discussing their roles and what they loved about our school. Mrs Mitchell addressed our years 3 – 6 line up assembly and asked the students if they could change one thing about the school, what would it be? Responses included; put in a pool, no homework, double the amount of homework and a giant slide. It was lovely to meet our new Minister and for her to take such a keen interest in our school.

PSSA NETBALL “It was a nail biter and we were on our toes the whole time! On Thursday 2 May our school Netball Team went to Bill Rose Sport Complex to play in Round 2 of the PSSA knockout competition against Muswellbrook Public School. It was a very close game - unfortunately losing by 8 points. At the end of the 2nd quarter we were only down by 1 point and at the end of the 3rd quarter we met at 21 points all. The final score was 31-23. We are all so proud of our achievements today.” “Before the game we had a skill session with Murrurundi Public school. Mrs Shoesmith congratulated us on our sportsmanship in helping out a less experienced school”

PSSA BASKETBALL Last Wednesday, the Scone Public School Boys PSSA Basketball team played their first game against Muswellbrook Public School. It was our first home game with a decent crowd to cheer on both teams. The boys demonstrated good sportsmanship and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They came away with a great win, 60-8. A big thank you to Danielle Fisher for your time so far with coaching, Kylie Ralston and Danielle Burnett for scoring along with Brad Ralston and Wilf for refereeing.

RUGBY LEAGUE TACKLE CLINIC On Tuesday 30 April, girls in year 5 and 6 participated in a tackle clinic with Dan Swan the NRL league development officer for the Upper Hunter. The girls learnt correct tackle technique, where and how to tackle. The afternoon was in preparation for the Rebecca Young Cup that will be played in Raymond Terrace on the 29th of this month. We have 11 keen girls to join a senior girls rugby league team for this which is fantastic.

OPEN RUGBY LEAGUE KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT On Thursday 2 May, the Opens Rugby League teams participated in the Knights Knockout in the A division.

The boys won 3 out of 4 of their pool games and made it to the quarter finals where we took on Singleton Public School. Unfortunately the boys went down in this game and were knocked out. The boys played well on the day, showing great skill and sportsman throughout the day.

A big thank you to Mr Seckold, Mr McInerney, our coaches, Mr Cuschieri and Mr Stewart the trainers. Also, thank you to Kerri Smith for washing our brand new jerseys, also thanks to the parents and grandparents for travelling and supporting our boys.

PSSA CLASSIC SHIELD GALA DAY

On Monday 6 May, the Opens League team participated in the PSSA Classic Shield knockout gala day at Pirtek Park in Singleton. We first played Muswellbrook South, winning convincingly 42-0, we then played Muswellbrook Public, winning 10-0. Our third game was against Singleton Public and sadly went down 8-4. The boys only had two tries scored against them all day and racked up 56 points, an outstanding effort by all involved. Thank you as always to the parents and grandparents for getting the boys to the game and supporting them. Again, thank you to Kerri Smith for the washing of the jumpers. Thank you to Mr Smith who took on the coaching and training duty for the day and to Mr Cuschieri for training duty.

NAPLAN ONLINE INFORMATION NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. In Term 2, Week 3 our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site. https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher. For more info: · How to support your child during NAPLAN · information for parents and carers · Watch a video that explains NAPLAN Online · Subscribe to ACARA’s monthly parent newsletter, Parent Update Parents who do not wish their child to participate in this year’s NAPLAN testing must sign a consent to withdraw form prior to the commencement of testing. Testing dates for our school will be Monday 13 May – Friday 17 May.
