PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Last week I had the great pleasure of listening to the speeches of the students who participated in the John Townsend Public Speaking Competition. I was very impressed with the calibre of the speakers and the maturity and complexity of the content. This is a great testament to the planning and preparation the students have put into their speeches. The feedback and positive comments provided by the adjudicators over the three days was very valuable. We are very appreciative of the time our three adjudicators have given our school. We are also very thankful to Mrs Borg for her leadership of Public Speaking across our school and her coordination of our participation and success at external competitions such as the Muswellbrook Eisteddfod and Apex Public Speaking Competition. Students and staff will be recording and tracking their physical activity over the next ten week period. The aim is to encourage everyone to be more active. Mrs Schofield has been co-ordinating a “Walking Club” before school and students have been responding positively to this activity.

Our school also operates a Breakfast Club every morning in our Community Hub and offers a healthy breakfast of cereal, toast and fruit to those who need it.

PUBLIC SPEAKING GRAND FINAL RESULTS – VERY HIGH STANDARD OF SPEAKING! Congratulations to all students who spoke so eloquently at our 2019 public speaking grand finals last week. The adjudicators, Mrs Pringle, Ms Mitchell and Mr Rowney, were very complementary about the skills our students have in this field. Elements of a good public speaker were noted, for example; topics had a high level of interest for the audience, speakers had excellent voice variation, some extensive research had occurred and appropriate use of the rhetorical question was evident. Speeches were well structured and ideas were linked together effectively. Students spoke with passion and vulnerability, used humour effectively and had rich vocabularies.

Some further feedback for the benefit of all students at our school included; articulate clearly, stress both the beginning and end sounds of every word to be a clear speaker, don’t do wild gestures or over emphasise particular words and use pause for effect.

Early Stage One saw Ava come first, Jackson second and Shelby third. All our Kindergarten speakers used the microphone to good effect and included many personal reflections in their speeches. They really impressed our adjudicators with their skilled deliveries at such a young age!

Stage One was fiercely contested with Olivia, Harmony and Amelia all being awarded highly commended. Nathaniel came third, Toby second and congratulations to Lachlan who came first!

Stage three were so impressive in terms of the maturity of ideas found in their speeches. All students had important messages to convey to us, convince us of, or persuade us. Speakers were all very well prepared, had rehearsed thoroughly and gave polished performances. Congratulations to Charesse and Hallie who came equal first, Angus and Chloe were awarded equal third and highly commended was bestowed upon Beth and Lauren.

Mrs Pringle, one of the Stage two adjudicators began her feedback by stating that all students present were a credit to Scone Public School and their families. I was extremely proud to hear this and agree wholeheartedly! Students all listened with respect and interest to what their fellow schoolmates had to say.

Congratulations to Adelaide who was the winner of the Stage two competition. Lacey came an extremely close second and Athena came third. Well done to Shoshana, Eilish and Alexander who all spoke eloquently.

Many other students assisted across the three mornings of Grand Finals. Thanks to the Chairpersons; Ben, Dusty, Hallie, Lachlan, Abbey and Lauren, the sound booth students; Abbey and Harper, and the microphone technicians; Eloise, Tia and Hallie

We all learnt so much more about our students through the topics they chose to speak about. Thanks to parents and teachers who always give their full support to this program within our school.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DISCOVERY DAY Our budding Stage Three engineers had a fabulous day out on Thursday 13 June, participating in a day designed to encourage creative thinking and exploration. The teams of four collaborated to send different sources of power to a grid, build a tower that would support weight and withstand an earthquake, and to send messages using light communication signals. They also tried to cover a distance with the least amount of string, build a Mars buggy that would carry a load over rocky terrain. Of course, there was also the infamous bridge build – our second team to attempt this, built the strongest bridge of the day, perhaps its strength was helped by the number of smiley faces drawn all over it! All students tried their best in their tasks, and their excellent teamwork was commented on by many of the coordinating staff. This event, run by

the University of Newcastle, is completely sponsored by Yancoal, and their staff attend as instructors for the event. We thank them for their generosity, and also that of the volunteers from the Rotary Club of Muswellbrook, the Muswellbrook CWA, and students from Muswellbrook High School.

TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY On Wednesday 12 June, we sent five teams to participate in a touch football gala day held in Scone. The day was run by NSW Touch and the students had a great day, showing outstanding sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the students who participated and a big thank you to our parent helpers who made the day possible.

10’S KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT Last Wednesday, the Under 10’s travelled to Cessnock to participate in the A division of the Knights Knockout. The first game we played Jewells Primary and won 8-4, then Warners Bay Public, again winning 8-4. Edgeworth Public was next and SPS were winners 16-8, our last pool game was against Anna Bay Public and in order to top our pool and progress through to quarter finals, we had to win this one. The team was successful and won 12-8. We had a very excited team going through to the quarter finals where we came up against a large side from Belmont Public, the team played very well but unfortunately we went down 20-4. The team showed great skill and

sportsmanship throughout the day and after every game they all had the biggest smiles on their faces.

Thank you to all the parents and carers for transporting and supporting the students on the day. A big thank you to our coach Mr Harrington and the trainers on the day Mr Brooks, Mr King and Mr O’Brien.

OVERUSING AND UNDERUSING OUR STRENGTHS

The concept of over-using a strength might sound strange; isn’t a strength a good thing? It is true that all 24 character strengths are morally virtuous in their own right however they can still be overused. If we remember that a character strength is essentially something we find natural to use because it represents traits we value, we can start to see how sometimes we might turn to using them even when it “hurts”. For example, someone may have a strength in kindness. Kindness when used “just right” helps the person receiving the kindness to feel good and ALSO the person being kind to feel good. When a kind person finds it difficult to say no or put in boundaries, they can find themselves stretched physically, mentally and emotionally. They may also find that in being kind to everyone else, they are not being kind to themselves or those closest to them. Inversely, if someone who values kindness is not given the opportunity or freedom to demonstrate kindness on a regular basis, they too will feel depleted.

Page 6: SCONE PUBLIC SC HOOL

Term 2 Week 8 Tuesday 18 June 2019 Humour is a strength that needs to be used “just right”. Being in an environment where one cannot express their strength of humour can be stifling. However, overusing humour can come across as being rude, offensive, inappropriate or just plain annoying. Spend some time thinking about what your top five overused character strengths might look like and those of your children. Appreciate these strengths but also be mindful of the need to “dial them up” or “dial them down” when needed.
